MacBook :: Flash Websites Closed But Fans Not Stop Running

Sep 23, 2009

A lot of times, when I close the flash intense web sites, my fans won't stop running until I go into activity monitor and force quit flash. This is very irritating and kills my battery life. I feel like I am constantly playing the sims 3 even if I am not doing anything. Also, are there varying levels of how much flash you're using? For example, if you're on youtube is that just as bad as being on macrumors and looking at flash based ad banners?

MacBook Pro :: Wakes From Sleep With Lid Closed

Jun 6, 2008

When I go to bed, I like to just put my macbook pro to sleep by closing the lid. But almost 100% of the time it wakes itself. It gets really hot when this happens so I've been turning it off most of the time instead, but I'd really like to get this resolved. I have an external monitor plugged into it so I know its awake as the screen shifts over to the external monitor. When no monitor is plugged into it, I do occasionally hear the hard drive spin up. I have tried unplugging everything except for the power cable to see if that might help, but the result is the same. I have a 1st generation 15" Macbook Pro running OS X 10.5.3.

MacBook Pro :: 15" I5 Won't Sleep When Closed

Jun 27, 2010

I picked up a new 15" i5 MBP last week. 2 days later, I got 2 kernel panics and some various beeps at boot up. Took it back to the store and got a replacement yesterday.

When I close the lid, the screen shuts off and it goes to sleep for maybe a few seconds, then suddenly, the screen will come back on (apple logo on the back will illuminate again). When i open the screen just a crack, i can see it is indeed not asleep and the desktop is displayed on the screen.

MacBook Pro :: Awaking From Sleep When Closed

May 3, 2012

Looking through some previous threads, I couldn't seem to find a set of circumstances that exactly mirrored what I'm encountering. I have reset the SMC and disabled the "awake with lid opening" function in terminal to no avail. Hoping to find any insight. So this is the typical path leading up to the symptom.

End of the day. Shut down all of my programs save for Finder. Eject all drives. Unplug the computer and put it to sleep. (The symptom occurs whether I put the system to sleep through the OS or simply close the lid.)

I put the computer in my briefcase and drive home. Occasionally, I'll open up my briefcase to find the computer is incredibly hot and running while closed and enclosed in said briefcase. It's been a minor annoyance up to this point, but yesterday I found it literally hot to the touch and with a completely discharged battery when I went to grab it yesterday.

MacBook Pro :: It Will Not Sleep When Lid Is Closed After Servicing

May 18, 2012

I have just sent my MacBook Pro for servicing because my hard disk was corrupted by an anti-virus file (the irony...). I just got it back today and I found out that when I closed the lid, it just would not sleep. I did not have this problem previously. I came to the community to see of there was a solution, I did find a solution, by resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) but the problem still occurs. Any solutions? I'm unsure wether I did do the steps wrongly. I carefully followed all the steps except for one which I quote "If your Mac appears to be running normally but isn't responding, force the computer to shut down by pressing the and holding the power button for 10 seconds." Under (Before Resetting the SMC).

OS X V10.7 Lion :: MacBook Pro Won't Go To Sleep When Lid Closed

May 27, 2012

My macbook pro (early 2011) won't go to sleep when I close the lid ever since I upgraded to Lion (10.7.4) from Snow Leopard (10.6.8). The computer will still sleep when I click on "sleep" from the Apple menu. The computer just won't automatically sleep when I close the lid.

I tried a number of things:
1. enabling/disabling internet sharing (don't have it enabled in the first place)
2. uninstalling Little Snitch
3. Delete printer queues. Also tired deleting all printers & resetting printing system.
4. SMC reset
5. Delete: Macintosh HD > Library > Preferences > System Configuration.
Nothing works.

MacBook Pro :: Its Not Waking Up From Closed Clam-shell Sleep?

Feb 2, 2012

I've been having problems with my mid 2009 2.53GHz MacBook Pro 15" not waking up from sleep after I open the clamshell (screen) back up.  When I open the screen after letting it sit for a while, I can hear the HDD spinning up and the status light on the bottom of the MacBook turns off (like it normally does when the clamshell is opened), but the screen is black and there is absolutely no response in any key combinations or trackpad taps.  I've been having this problem for about a month now and its getting pretty annoying.  I've tried a total wipe of the disk and a fresh Lion install with a full TimeMachine restore, but I'm having absolutely no luck.  The only thing that can bring the MBP back to life is a hard restart.  Sometimes when I hard restart it, it comes back to life right where I let off (basically like when the battery loses all its juice and restores everything thats open), but most of the time, it starts up like a normal boot with no restore.

MacBook Pro :: Re-awakens After Sleep With Lid Closed After Mavericks Update

Jun 1, 2014

My MBP seems to want to re-awaken itself after I make it go to sleep by closing the lid!

This has started since the last couple of updates. Weirdest thing - it would go to sleep after I close it, and then after a while it would try to re-awaken with the lid shut, and it keeps doing it over and over again.

I noticed that the machine was hot, one day when I came home, and then I realized that it was hot because it keeps wanting to come awake after I closed the lid, and noticed it the last couple times I went to bed myself!

MacBook :: Mini Display Port - Vga Only Works With Lid Closed Then Computer Goes To Sleep?

Mar 12, 2012

I have a 2009 unibody macbook pro. I have 42 in lcd tv. I have a minidisplay to vga adapter and a vga cable. When I try to connect the monitor to the mbp when the lid is open nothing is detected. I do not get any options to change to mirror mode or am able to change any settings regarding the monitor. I can change the resolution of the built in display only. Now for the twist. If I connect everything, do a restart and close the lid, as the computer boots up the external monitor works. Its the grey boot screen with the apple logo. But as soon as the computer begins to load the desktop, the monitor losses the signal. At first I thought it was going into sleep mode, so I hooked up a usb mouse to keep the computer awake. I tried the process again, and as soon as it goes to the desktop it losses the signal. So I don't think it is sleep mode.  I downloaded the minidisplay prot firmware update, but because the screen is not detected when the lid is open I cant run it. When the lid is closed the computer either goes to sleep or doesn't send the desktop signal and I still cant run it. Nothing happens if I change between the video cards (9400 and 9600gm). Is it a resolution issue? Do the vga cables have a max resolution that is lower than 1900 x 1200?

MacBook Pro :: Stop From Going To Sleep When Closing The Lid

Apr 15, 2012

I have an old MBP laying around that is not worth selling due to a number of little issues it has. However, it still functions just fine and, I think, would make an excelent server. However, there is one small issue: If I close the lid, it will go to sleep.

I've tried using a few different apps, InsomniaX and Caffiene being two of the more popular ones, but so far nothing seems to take. I know I can do this with the use of an external monitor or mouse, but I don't want to have to keep a mouse plugged in simply so my server can run and I don't have, or want, to set up a monitor for it.

how I can make my MBP behave as I'd like?

MacBook Pro :: Use Computer In Closed Clam-shell (display Closed) Mode With An External Display?

Jun 4, 2012

I have an 13" MBP that I ordered new in April, 2012. It is running Lion. I have an external monitor that is capable of 1440x900 resolution. I have an external keyboard and trackpad hooked up, and I like to close my MBP up and stick it in a BookArc. I want to be able to have the internal display disabled and to have the MBP only allow me to put windows on the external display, so long as the lid is closed. I also want to be sure that I am taking advantage of the resolutions available on my external monitor, which are higher than those supported by the internal display (specifically 1440x900).

This doesn't seem to work because I either have to allow the MBP to continue to draw my desktop across both screens (internal and external), OR use the "mirror displays" mode, which restricts my resolution of my external monitor. This means I either forgoe the additional resolution benefits of my external monitor, or I end up with windows that fall off-the-cliff, so to speak, because they are drawn in the portion of the desktop that would be shown on my internal display (which is closed).

I've read the community support pages on using the MBP with an external monitor, most relevantly, this page. It simply recommends using the "mirror displays" option. However, this option, as I mentioned above, doesn't allow me to make use of the additional resolution, and my external display looks bad. how to keep the 13" MBP in closed clamshell position, with the internal display disabled, and use my external monitor at resolutions higher than those allowed by the 13" MBP but which are available to my external monitor when not in "mirror displays" mode?

IMac :: Sleep Noise - How To Stop It

Dec 11, 2010

I have seen several threads on the Internet but never an answer to the noise problem Imacs seem to have when in sleep mode. We have an Imac, 27' 10.6.5 2TB bought this summer, in the bedroom which we use as a TV. When we go to sleep we put the Imac to sleep as well with the remote and the ZZZ on the screen. During the night however the Imac fan or harddisk starts to spin as if the whole thing is going to startup but then it winds down again and it does this every hour or so. It is so loud that it wakes us up. Some nights it does it some nights it doesn't. Before we actually had the screen come on too but now it doesn't do that anymore.

OS X :: How To Stop IMac From Going Into Deep Sleep

Feb 13, 2010

I ask because I'm using remote tap on iPhone to remote into my iMac when I'm away. It sleeps it and wakes it just fine remotely. But when it's asleep too long, remote tap will fail to wake it, and the only thing that will wake it is if I hit a button on the keyboard or mouse. Is there a way to just keep it in normal sleep(?) or something?

OS X :: Disk Ejects On Sleep And Won't Stop Spinning?

Feb 24, 2010

I replaced my superdisk with a 500 Gb Seagate drive in an optibay enclosure (unibody MBP running 10.6.2). The drive mounts fine on startup, and has not exhibited any unpredictable behavior in the file system, but it frequently ejects and provides me with this unhelpful message:The disk was not ejected properly. If possible, always eject a disk before unplugging it or turning it off. To eject a disk, select it in the Finder and choose File . Eject. The next time you connect the disk, Mac OS X will attempt to repair any damage to the information on the disk.

Once the drive ejects it is not visible in disk utility. I can hear it spinning continuously, but cannot access the drive. Moreover, I cannot access the drive unless I fully shut down the system and then reboot. A restart is often not sufficient to get the drive back up, but a full shutdown has worked every time so far.

The behavior seems to happen when the computer sleeps. I noticed that it would also happen sometimes if I handled the computer roughly by setting it down jarringly, so I took the whole thing apart, and reseated the drive within the enclosure, but the drive still ejects frequently, about once per day.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Keyboard & Mouse Stop Working After Sleep

Mar 20, 2012

I just upgraded to Lion, on a MacMini, and now everytime I use sleep mode, I can't wake my lion up again because key presses or mouse clicks don't work anymore. I can still move the pointer, but OS does not respond anymore to mouse clicks or keyboard. Have to power down, then start up again. Keyboard & mouse then work until the next time the lion sleeps.

This is quite annoying, as I'm an intermittent style of user who relies on sleep mode a lot.

Lion is nice when it works, but it has introduced problems I've never had before. And booting into Lion is way slower than Leopard or Snow Leopard were. At least double the time, or more.

Should mention I'm also using a Logitech denovo wireless keyboard and a Logitech M570 wireless trackball.

Connecting a standard USB keyboard and/or mouse, once the lion has gone to sleep, does not solve anything. The OS still  does not respond.
