OS X :: Can't Get Past Time Machine Screen

Apr 12, 2010

at least I think it's the time machine screen...

I've never used a MAC but I bought this imac for my wife because she thought it was the best looking computer in the world....

After it boots up, when i click on any icon, a calculator, a clock, and a calendar pop up on the screen. I can make them disappear but clicking on anything brings them back...
and that's where I'm stuck.

OS X Mavericks :: Can't Get Past White Loading A Screen After Restoring From Time Machine Backup

Jun 21, 2014

I am aware there are others threads of my problem however they date back years ago and after trying their solutions it still does not work.

After using Time Machine to restore my hard drive from a backup, I can't get past the white loading screen with apple logo after system restart during restore process. Ive gone into disk utility and repaired hard drive - it's fine. So I know this is a software glitch. I've also tried resetting SMC & PRAM (whatever those mean). No success and i cannot get past the white loading screen.

I'm running Mavericks (latest) on a late 2009 iMac

OS X :: Laptop Can't Get Past 99% Calculating Changes In Time Machine?

Oct 18, 2009

To begin with, I am using a WD (Western Digital?) external hard drive that I back up to wirelessly through an Apple wireless router. The hard drive is divided into three sections - one for each of two iMacs and one for my laptop. The iMacs back up automatically, but I manually start Time Machine for my laptop since it is not always on and not always in my home. I am having problems only with the laptop backing up - both iMacs back up to the HD just fine. Also, if it matters here, my laptop's internal HD recently crashed and I got it replaced at the Apple store, and restored it from a backup that did work two weeks ago.

Basically the issue is that I try to initiate Time Machine now with the proper partition opened on the external HD and it reaches 99% after a slow process of "Calculating Changes" and freezes there. This is true wirelessly and if I jack the laptop into the external HD directly with the cord. After several minutes, the fan starts up. After what feels like a pretty long time, it suddenly starts over in "Calculating Changes", reaches 99%, and once again freezes.

Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be? I am hesitant to blame it on getting a new HD, but that IS the only major thing that has changed since I last backed up. I am pretty sure it is a software issue since both iMacs back up with no problems.

The moment I enter Time Machine (to restore files) Screen Sharing's VNC connection doesn't seem to be updated.

How do I access Time Machine correctly with Screen Sharing?

Mac Pro :: Fans Speed Up On Boot And Don't Stop - Machine Doesn't Get Past This Phase

Feb 8, 2012

Help! My internal fans speed up on boot (sounds like a jet engine!) and don't ever stop! My machine doesn't get past this phase, either. I have reset the SMC, and was cleaning the system for dust, etc, just before this situation occurred. After the cleaning, I was able to boot up fine. Then I had to re-open the machine and adjust something. I put the panel back on, rebooted, and the fans churned up like a Blackhawk helicopter, and didn't stop!   So, I unplugged the power supply, waited ten minutes, then reconnected the power supply and powered the machine on. The same result! The fans just don't stop.

I did a restore from a Time Machine backup. Now my iTunes Artwork screen saver isn't working. I'd try to do a reinstall from the Time Machine again to see if it still is a problematic, but I was an idiot and deleted it and backing up fresh. I've repaired permissions. I've gotten album artwork. My music folder reads like this. User/Music/iTunes. Inside are two folders. One "Album Artwork" the other "iTunes Media." Inside the "Album Artwork" folder is "Cache" and "Download."

OS X :: IMac Not Getting Past Blue Screen

Jun 19, 2009

I am running OSX 10.5.7. Installed it several weeks ago. This morning, the computer was acting up a bit. For instance, in my wife's account, I couldn't access our shared iTunes library, getting the error saying it was locked. When I rebooted, suddenly I couldn't get into the machine. It just hangs on a blue screen. I've tried booting with the shift key down, and that didn't do anything. I also tried cmd-s, but don't know what to do with that at the prompt, and cmd-v, which works fine, but just dumps me into the blue screen again.

I have a bootable FW drive, and I can boot fine off that, and even see the internal drive. I've opened files on the internal drive -- it all looks intact. But I still can't boot from the internal drive. I've tried Googling for solutions, but if you google "hangs on blue screen" or bsod or whatever around OSX, you get a bunch of hits related to installing 10.5.7, which isn't my issue, and you also get articles from 2006 and 2004, etc. I was hoping it was some sort of permissions thing, but I am not really sure.

OS X :: Can't Get Past Loading Bar In Boot Screen

May 24, 2010

My mac was shutting down and it took sooo long (blue screen with the spinning loader). I never experienced this, cause normally the dock would vanish and my mac would shut down instantly. But this time it kept showing a blue shutdown screen, so I decided (after about 2 minutes) to hold the power button and force a shutdown. The next time I booted the mac it showed me the gray boot screen, with the spinning wheel and a gray loading bar, which I think is indicating a firmware update or something that has to do with my forced shutdown. But the bar gets to about 1/8 and then vanishes. The spinning wheel stays, but nothing else happens. It just hangs and keeps spinning forever.

MacBook Pro :: Won't Go Past The Grey Screen

Apr 25, 2012

Okay well, to start off, I got my MacBook from a distant family member who got a new one so they let me have their old one. They got it from a pawn shop so I don't have the disk that we got the OS from but it hasn't had any issues UNTIL NOW. I need to use my laptop for a homework assignment. Everytime I turn it on it'll just stay on the loading screen, I left it for 4 hours yesterday and it still wouldn't work. I reset the (insert acronym here) thing already, the thing where you press control, option, P, R keys at start up. because my assignment is on the laptop and it's due tomorrow.

MacBook :: It Won't Get Past Grey Screen

May 25, 2012

My Macbook Pro (2008) was upgraded to Lion 10.7.2  before I bought it used.  It's always been slow and after a little while it won't boot up properly, it only gets as far as the apple logo with the spinning wheel underneath.

I've have used Recovery HD and Disk Utility to repair/verify the hard drive and after the repair it still won't boot up past the apple logo.  I downloaded OSX Lion 10.7.4  (client combo) update onto an external drive but I can't install the update when using Recovery HD.  I've tried mounting the existing hard drive onto an external drive, but I get an error mesage immediately.

There are only a few folders I need to take from the existing hard drive in the Macbook Pro. What can I do to either access my hard drive or get it to boot up properly?  I have a retail copy of a Snow Leopard DVD that I can use.  I believe I might have saved Lion onto a DVD a while ago, but Apple seems to insist we intall by downloading the latest Lion?  Basically I need to access the hard drive without erasing the data.

OS X :: Macbook Won't Boot Up Past Blue Screen

May 16, 2009

I hardly ever turn off my Macbook unless i need to - I just close it and use it whenever i need to. I let the battery run dry as Apple suggests to do every now and again, and turned it on the next day. It started to boot and took a little longer to get past the grey apple logo and loading circle and then froze on the blue screen. I can control the mouse, but every few seconds it changes to a darker blue, cursor disappears but returns after a second or two. I've tried:

- Booting into safe mode (Same thing happens)
- Booting from CD and repairing permissions (Said everything was ok, same thing happens when I booted)
- Single user mode (used some commands from an Apple page and restarted)

I can however boot into windows perfectly fine, which leads me to suspect it's a corrupt log in item. I'd like to know for sure it's not a hardware problem so I don't have to take it into an Apple Store.

OS X :: Start Up Doesn't Get Past Password Screen

Nov 5, 2009

After booting in safe mode, my MacBook Pro doesn't load the desktop/applications properly. Whenever I enter the password it asks me for the password again. Series of events: I connected external drives for the first time in Apple Bootcamp/Windows. They did not mount and Windows froze whenever I connected the drives. I tried it a few times, each time using the power button for turning the computer off. After a couple of trials the screen color was very weird (psychedelic) and I noticed that the computer had gotten hot (in Windows my fans don't work as they should) and I restarted the in OSX 10.4. The psychedelic colors were still present and the temperature reading was 71 degrees (smc control software). Searching forums in a panic that I might have fried my video card partially I found and followed a description on how to change the screen from "color" to "grey" under System Preferences>Universal access. This did not help as the psychedelic color/pixelness still persisted. Even worse, when I restarted the computer, the above mentioned problem occured (not getting the proper desktop, I can't run any application or shut the computer down, it always tries to reload the desktop after a couple of seconds). What I tried so far: -I resetted the PRAM using the Command, Option, P, and R keys and waiting for two additional startup sounds. Result: the psychedelic color is gone, it looks normal. But still cycles between grey and color during the desktop stall.-I repaired my startup disk with the OSX installation disk...no repairs were necessary -I repaired permissions with the installation disk...lots of repairs were made, but no success upon reboot -I started the computer in safe mode...result: I don't get past the password screen. As soon as I enter the password it asks me for it again.

MacBook :: Won't Start Up Past Gray Screen

Aug 2, 2010

first i'd like to give you a few pieces of information on what was going on before I restarted my mac. 1. My mac is a 13'' late 2008 mb with 2gb of ram (running leopard). 2. I JUST had my hard drive replaced due to a failure. 3. Before i restarted my computer i was having several "system extenstion" errors and when i tried to repair i recieved the message 'Underlying task reported failure on exit.' At the time, i was also trying to install Adobe CS5 Master Collection trial and i couldn't get past a password screen. This also prompted me to restart. Once the computer began to restart, it began updating boot caches. This was taking a very long time so i walked away from the mb. When i came back i realized the battery had died and when i plugged it back in and tried to get it to boot, it would get to the gray screen with the apple and the spinning logo underneath. But then it simply reboots.

I've tried restarting the pram. I've tried rebooting in single user mode (cmd + S) and got to the point where i could rebuild the tree (fsck_hfs -r /dev/disk0s2) and that did it's thing for about ten minutes and it didn't fix the problem. I don't have my install disk but apple is sending me a new one and will be here by friday.
