OS X :: Laptop Can't Get Past 99% Calculating Changes In Time Machine?

Oct 18, 2009

To begin with, I am using a WD (Western Digital?) external hard drive that I back up to wirelessly through an Apple wireless router. The hard drive is divided into three sections - one for each of two iMacs and one for my laptop. The iMacs back up automatically, but I manually start Time Machine for my laptop since it is not always on and not always in my home. I am having problems only with the laptop backing up - both iMacs back up to the HD just fine. Also, if it matters here, my laptop's internal HD recently crashed and I got it replaced at the Apple store, and restored it from a backup that did work two weeks ago.

Basically the issue is that I try to initiate Time Machine now with the proper partition opened on the external HD and it reaches 99% after a slow process of "Calculating Changes" and freezes there. This is true wirelessly and if I jack the laptop into the external HD directly with the cord. After several minutes, the fan starts up. After what feels like a pretty long time, it suddenly starts over in "Calculating Changes", reaches 99%, and once again freezes.

Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be? I am hesitant to blame it on getting a new HD, but that IS the only major thing that has changed since I last backed up. I am pretty sure it is a software issue since both iMacs back up with no problems.

OS X :: Time Machine Just Keeps On Calculating Changes?

Jun 2, 2010

I recently realized that my TM hasn't successfully backed my system since April 21. At the time I noticed this, the TM disk was very low on free space, even hitting 0% free.

I powered off my mac, and even powered off my disk. Waited a small bit. No good. I then manually deleted some old folders, and still no good. (I'm thinking that may not have been a good thing, but at this point I don't see the downside.)

I'm thinking of completely scrubbing that disk and starting TM on it as if it were a new disk.

OS X :: Time Machine - Stuck On Calculating Changes?

Oct 13, 2009

I've finally gotten Snow Leopard on my Mac Book Pro, after jumping through hoops to get there - Disc not GUID, then when it was, SL not believing that the disc was bootable.

Due to this, I nuked the hard drive, installed SL and then restored all settings and apps from my latest time machine back up, whilst physically cabled to my Airport Extreme Base Station. Whilst I left it do that, it finished the restore, and also did a couple of hourly back ups. All hunky dorey so far.

Now that I'm using wireless, I notice that Time Machine kicks in as normal to do a back up. The icon starts whizzing round, and it starts calculating the changes to back up. But that's it. It progresses up to 99%, and then just sits there. I've left it like that for several hours, to see if it's actually going to complete, but nothing happens.

Is there something I can look at to see if I can prod it into action?

My backups go to a Drobo hanging off a Power Mac G4 on FW800, physically networked to the AEBS.

OS X :: Unable To Do Time Machine Restore / Calculating Space Required To Restore Data

How long should I be stuck on the screen "calculating space required to restore data"? I've been on this screen for about 20, 30 minutes. The "hash mark wheel" is spinning, but just not seeing anything new. Is this normal? My backed up data is ~100 GB.

OS X :: Can't Get Past Time Machine Screen

Apr 12, 2010

at least I think it's the time machine screen...

I've never used a MAC but I bought this imac for my wife because she thought it was the best looking computer in the world....

After it boots up, when i click on any icon, a calculator, a clock, and a calendar pop up on the screen. I can make them disappear but clicking on anything brings them back...
and that's where I'm stuck.

OS X Mavericks :: Can't Get Past White Loading A Screen After Restoring From Time Machine Backup

Jun 21, 2014

I am aware there are others threads of my problem however they date back years ago and after trying their solutions it still does not work.

After using Time Machine to restore my hard drive from a backup, I can't get past the white loading screen with apple logo after system restart during restore process. Ive gone into disk utility and repaired hard drive - it's fine. So I know this is a software glitch. I've also tried resetting SMC & PRAM (whatever those mean). No success and i cannot get past the white loading screen.

I'm running Mavericks (latest) on a late 2009 iMac

OS X :: Restoring Laptop From Time Machine?

Apr 16, 2010

I have a Feb 2008 MBP which died and I had some questions about restoring a similar state to a new i5 MBP. I do have the old hard drive (not sure if it works yet) and Time Machine backups.

I was wondering if it is safe to do a complete Time Machine restore because I do not know if any of the files are model specific (and the old laptop does not have the newest version of 10.6.x likely to come on my new MBP). Also, how can I preserve my boot camp partition? Ideally, I would like a slightly bigger boot camp partition on the new laptop, but with an exact clone of the data on the old one. I do know that Time Machine will not restore my Windows partition.

apple is sending me a replacement UMBP. I'm keeping the current one until the replacement arrives and then using a time machine backup on the new one. My time machine backup will restore the new laptop with all the old laptops files, programs, preferences, emails, everything as the old laptop's drive was without having to reinstall everything? Correct?I guess I could always swap drives as well, that might be quicker.

OS X :: Full Restore With Time Capsule Stuck On Calculating...?

Dec 21, 2008

So I had to wipe and reinstall Mac OSX.5 (or at least the Apple store genius did). I backed it up just before I took it, and now I am trying to restore completely from the login selection (restore from a time machine backup).

It recognizes my time capsule, and my time machine drive, and it goes to the window where it asks you to choose what to transfer: "User name, network and preferences, applications folder, and finally my files and folders" At first it said "calculating..." for all of them, but all of them except the applications folder finished. It has been over 3 hours and the applications folder is STILL "Calculating" and will NOT let me select transfer.

Mac Pro :: Fans Speed Up On Boot And Don't Stop - Machine Doesn't Get Past This Phase

Feb 8, 2012

Help! My internal fans speed up on boot (sounds like a jet engine!) and don't ever stop! My machine doesn't get past this phase, either. I have reset the SMC, and was cleaning the system for dust, etc, just before this situation occurred. After the cleaning, I was able to boot up fine. Then I had to re-open the machine and adjust something. I put the panel back on, rebooted, and the fans churned up like a Blackhawk helicopter, and didn't stop!   So, I unplugged the power supply, waited ten minutes, then reconnected the power supply and powered the machine on. The same result! The fans just don't stop.

MacBook :: Plugged In Long Past The Fully Charged Time Good For Battery?

Dec 9, 2009

i've had my macbook for a little under a year and i think i may have shortened my battery power. i have a tendency to leave my laptop plugged in long past the fully charged time and allow it to run through the battery till it shuts down. i do this when i accidentally fall asleep listening to music or leave for work and forget it's on or plugged in. how hard on the battery or laptop is it to do this repeatedly? when it's fully charged it tells me i have roughly 4 hours of battery power available. is that the right amount? is there anything i should do to protect the battery? the manufacturer warranty will be up in march, should i take it in for a check up while i may have the option of not having to pay for it?

OS X :: Calculating Multiple Files Size In Finder?

Sep 3, 2009

This is one of the things I haven't figured out how to do yet on my mac. I miss this feature which was so easy in windows. Select multiple files and click properties and you get a file size count. If you do the same thing on a mac you get a number open for each file. If you need a cumulative total quickly its a pain in the butt to add each file.

What am I missing here?

Also, any way to display file size at the bottom of a finder window? When you click a file, it says "1 of X selected" and the amount of hard drive space free which is cool, but file size at the bottom would be nice to have.

OS X :: Airport Can't Find Network Until Battery Indicator Done Calculating?

Feb 26, 2009

I don't know if anybody else experiences this problem, but when I open my laptop (from sleep) and then try to find a network via the airport icon in the menubar it won't find anything until the battery life indicator is done "calculating". Sometimes that is around 10 seconds... I don't see how they are related, but it always works out that way for me. As soon as it's done calculating the remaining battery time I can click on the airport icon and it will find a network within a few seconds. Otherwise it just sits there searching and won't find anything...

MacBook Pro :: SSD In 2010 - Enter Time Machine And / Or Finder The Machine Freezes

Jan 1, 2011

Have installed an 120GB SSD in my Macbook Pro 2010 but have had a couple of problems. Sometimes when you try to enter time machine and or Finder the machine freezes. Also the only way out of this is to hold the power button down and reboot. I have been informed by Apple that there are slight differences between the 2009 and 2010 models. Another odd thing is Skype will not load up automatically on startup, despite making sure this option is ticked. Most other things seem to work. Reinstall original hard drive and all OK.I have tried this with OCZ and Crucial SSDs and get same result. I have also installed the SSDs by cloning and by direct original OS X disk.

Something I've noticed lately with Snow Leopard which I had not heard anything about but have been noticing with installing Snow Leopard or using disk utility with Snow Leopard systems. Just a nice little bonus I wasn't originally aware of that 10.6 is seeing drive capacities in decimal now to match the drive manufacturers specs as opposed to calculating in binary like they and Windows had been forever. Did a little digging and found a knowledge base article in regards to the change.

Hardware :: Can't Get Laptop To Work With Time Capsule

Feb 17, 2009

My girlfriend just moved into a new apartment where her roommate has the wireless network set up through a time capsule as the router. She was issued a IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad from work, and she wants to be able to use it at home to do work at night.

The Thinkpad can see the network, but it won't allow her to connect to it. It doesn't even prompt for a password. From the information that is displayed about the network, it looks as if it is only sending out an 802.11n signal. The only thing I can think of that would prohibit her from accessing the network is that the Thinkpad can't use the 802.11n standard?

How can I find out what wireless standards the Thinkpad can use? Also, I tried to use my MBP to configure the Time Capsule with Airport Utility, but I didn't know the password and her roommate said he doesn't remember it (I know the password for the network, just not the TC itself). If I end up resetting the TC from the button on the back, will he lose any data saved on the TC?
