I've managed to find a practice test for the 9l0-509 server test, but I can't find a practice test for the support essentials test anywhere (and I don't mean the 10 questions from apple). I'm taking the exam soon, and a practice test would greatly help.

I'm trying to find the apple hardware test.I've tried pressing the D key, but the test won't start. My version of Snow Leopard only has one DVD (10.6.3). I rebooted from the DVD and had a look in the Utility section, but could not find the AHT there either.
Edit: OK, I see that it should be located on the original installation disks. However, I never had those - my Mac was once repaired under extended warranty (new harddrive), and they kindly upgraded me from Tiger to Leopard all those years ago.

My August 2007 MacBook runs OSX 10.4.10. It has performed flawlessly since my daughter bought it in 2007, and perfectly after I purchased it from her last september. The other night I was surfing the web while flying on a commercial airliner. (GoGoNet or something similar) Performance was kind of slow but I attributed that to the in-air wifi, which I had never used before. Then the browser started to hang with the spinning pinwheel. Option apple escape WOULD NOT force quit safari. After a few shutdowns using only the power button, the mac hung up on startup. I hear the chime, see the apple icon, the gear turns but it never goes past that point. It may be significant that the plane was flying through scary turbulence when my problems began.
When I boot up using the mac install disk 1, I can get it to start cleanly using the C key, the D key and NO keys. But when I run the hardware diagnostic, both short and long test, the mac comes up 100% clean. But i cannot see any test for the hard drive. When I try to run disk utility, the colored pinwheel arrives and it never goes away. When I go down the road of re-installing the system software, I cannot see the target drive.
When I put my ear on the deck, just to the right of the track-pad, I can hear the hard drive quietly spinning away with regular - not random - clicks.
I see that Apple is quietly replacing these hard-drives, but the affected computers seem to have a folder/question mark on the desktop on startup, not the apple/spinning gear.
I really would like to be able to recover my photos and some files if the hard drive is going to be swapped. But I am resigned to the situation that these un-backed-up files will be forever lost.
I recently started using Carbon Copy Cloner after using only Time Machine as my back up solution. I do understand the purpose of each application TM and a cloner utility such as Super Duper or CCC but I was wondering what the best process is when using these two methods to backup you files. For instance I use TM to back up my files as frequently as possible to keep all my recent changes updated.
I don't see how I would keep my clone updated and make sure that when something happens I will have a workable boot disk and not something that contains corrupted files. In other words I think these cloner utilities have some sort of feature to keep your clone drive updated every time something changes. This got me wondering what if you update your clone drive and for some reason one of the updated file was corrupted.
Now you have a backup that contains bad files and may affect your system (corrupted fonts files etc.) and when you realized that something is not working right in your system you may want to recover from your clone but you will basically end up with the same problem because the bad files were also backed up. How do you ensure that your clone will always be ready and that it will not contain bad files?

My son's 17" imac PPC G5 was not booting up. After a trying a couple of things I got it to boot using Disk Warrior and reparing the file directory. At that time I also ran DW's hardware test which said the drive was fine. My son hard restarted it shortly after I fixed it and it wouldn't start up again. Just a gray screen, no apple logo. When I tried to use DW again it told me there were problems with the hard drive and it couldn't fix the problem. I tried to fix the hard drive in target disk mode using Disk Utiltiy and Drive Genius. No luck. So I pulled a working drive out of my Mac Pro and reformatted it and swapped the internal drive of the iMac with it. There were no DIP switches to set. Started up the imac with a Leopard retail disk thinking I would just install a fresh system onto the replaced internal drive of the iMac. Disk Utility on the leopard disk didn't see the hard drive. Now I'm beginning to think it's a logic board problem but I can't find the original disks to do a Hardware test with. Is there some other way to test a logic board? Or some other idea that I'm not thinking of that could be wrong with the machine?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI currently have a macbook that uses a 320GB Ext HD for Time Machine, a Windows laptop used by the wife and a Windows desktop used for only downloading our pictures to a central location and acting as a print server. We'll be picking up a macbook in the coming weeks and I was thinking about using a 1TB Time Capsule to replace the Windows desktop. all the Windows desktop is used for is file sharing and print server! I want to use the Time Capsule for Time Machine on both laptops as well as a file server. What's the best way to partition the TC drive? I was thinking 3 volumes, one ~250GB for each laptop and a ~500GB for file sharing.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI use iPhoto to manage my photos. Nothing fancy, mainly family photos. In the past I have been creating a new library for each year. I'm now been presented with a project that I am working on that makes this practice rather cumbersome. I have been tinkering with the idea of merging all my libraries, but I wonder about the file size. Each library is about 4 GB in size, so a merged one would be about 20 GB. Is that too big in practice? Basically I would like to get an idea of how big is too big for an iPhoto Library to get, or what some of y'all use for management of libraries in practice.

I finally narrowed it down.After speaking to about 4 different people at apple.... they had me run the Apple Hardware Test off the boot CD.I took out EVERYTHING except the 2nd DVD burner (Apple Branded Superdrive from my old 2.5 Dual G5)... and ran the test.The Hardware Test ACTUALLY FROZE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE RAM TEST.I thought I had bad aftermarket ram... as it wasn't playing nice with the Apple ram when I added them together.Looks like I had fine aftermarket ram... the Apple ram was bad.I REPLACED the Apple Ram with the Aftermarket Ram... and the Hardware Test completed fine.So, now I'm going to be calling them again in the morning and letting them know what happened. I wonder if they'll just let me RMA the bad ram, or if I'm going to have to lug this dang thing down to an apple store.I WONT BE HAPPY IF I HAVE TO DO THAT.Oh, and no more lockups since switching out the ram... and all the other quirks (not able to burn CDs in Windows, sloooow Internet page draws, etc...) are all but gone now.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a 17" unibody MBP (early 2009, specs below). It was running hotter than usual the other day, so I F2 booted into AHT to run a diagnostic. The status box within AHT showed 1 second into the 1st pass, and never got beyond that. Several seconds after that status message was displayed, the cursor froze. The time counter never advanced after that, and although I waited a long time, nothing happened. The test froze.Â
I've tried it several times more. It once worked, but every other time has frozen. Checking the "extended test" box, or trying to run in loop mode has made no difference - still freezes at "1 second".Â
I've had this machine for 3 years, OS's Leopard through Lion, and this has never happened before. I last ran a test, successfully, in January. I've not changed any components or suffered any damage since then. Memtest (ver 4.22) says my RAM is fine. (I ran this because the first portion of the AHT is the RAM component.) Aside from the aforementioned overheating episode, which disappeared, my machine's been fine.Â

It could use a RAM upgrade, though. For some reason, the internal RAM isn't being used. The System Profiler claims the spot is empty. The easy to get to one on the bottom seems to be working fine, but it's a lowly little 256.
I'd like to upgrade to its full potential, but am concerned the problem with the internal might be a logic board problem. Any way to tell?
Should I just get a 2gb stick for the known-good slot? Where can I get one for less than the $87.99 Crucial wants for a 512mb?
What's the best way I can test RAM in an old iBook G3? It had a bad module so I replaced it. All seems okay now, but I want to test it to be sure it's all good. Normally I'd just pop in Memtest86+, but Memtest86 doesn't support PPC (obviously).
I don't have any disks for it or anything, so no Apple Hardware Test disk.

I ordered a i7 15" Macbook Pro high resolution anti glare screen over a week ago. I've been reading lots of forums on the subject and have heard about the small print, yellow tint to the bottom half of the screen, the laptop not sleeping etc.
So I contacted the store to find out about the possibility of returning it if I'm not happy. They said I can spend all the time in the store with it but as soon as I leave the store there is a 15% restocking fee. It hasn't arrived yet but I'm expecting it any day now.
Can someone tell me all the tests I can perform in the store before I leave?
I have a MAC OS X 10.4.11 IBook G4 1.1. It's acting up on me. Crashes often and freezes as well. The only CD I can find is the Mac OS X Tiger Install DVD. Is this the Hardware test cd as well? If yes, how do I get the hardware test started. I tried the "restart while holding "C" and "restart while holding the "option key"". Doesn't work. Don't see a hardware test option. If no, Can I download the application?

I have a new mac mini running OS 10.7.2 and I have just noticed problems with keyboard and mouse intermittently not working, along with other random glitches that seem to be hardware related. I tried restarting while holding down the "D" key to run hardware test, but all I get is the computer trying to get onto the Internet to restore. It then asks to choose a network, and when I drop down the menu of network choices, my home network is not listed -- only my neighbor's.  Right after purchase I cloned my OEM system drive over to a faster HDD, and the OEM drive is now an external backup. I wouldn't think that would matter since everything has been working fine for the last 3 months. How can I run a hardware test?

What is the best was to diagnose possible motherboard faults on a Mac? I'm having various problems which appear to be hardware related (i.e. re-formatting, re-loading OSX, etc don't seem to fix them and the problems appear at different times running different processes) so want to check the motherboard out.Typical problems are a USB hard drive suddening going off-line, the DVD burner suddenly resetting itself for no reason, screen not redrawing properly etc. and all these only happen occasionally. The only test I can find is a RAM test (various programs allow this including Tech Tool Pro 6) but is there a way to test other components?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm stuck between knowing if my MBP has a bag logic board, worn out plugs going Into it, or other reasons. It will not power on at all. About 5-10 minutes prior it was perfect. The battery had power, and when its not plugged up the green light is very bright. I figure since the I/O board is connected to the Logic and it shows power, that it may indicate its ok. But i dont know, since its not directly hooked to it. Apple / Geniuses and Other shops just give me quotes on changing out the logic board after observation of it not getting power...never have said anything relating to "After Testing the logic board...." So I am wondering, whats the secret? how is it done? CAN it be done at home? or, does anyone know what the shops/techs use to test boards?

I've just added a couple of entries to my HOSTS file to test whether it works the same way in Mac OSX (SL) as it does in Windoze.
I've found it does... and it doesn't.
My 4 test entries are totally blocked if I use Safari, but they're NOT blocked in Firefox.
Could someone tell me in simple terms why this is so, and if there's something I can do to make Firefox obey the HOSTS redirects?
I'm running an extended Apple Hardware Test on my 4Gb MacBook Pro. It's been running 50 minutes and isn't even 25% completed going by the progress bar. It's been on the same step (memory pass number 2) for pretty much this entire time. Is this a sign that something is wrong with my MacBook Pro? It was purchased new in June of this year.
