Hardware :: Time Capsule - Practice For Multiple Laptops?

Jan 8, 2009

I currently have a macbook that uses a 320GB Ext HD for Time Machine, a Windows laptop used by the wife and a Windows desktop used for only downloading our pictures to a central location and acting as a print server. We'll be picking up a macbook in the coming weeks and I was thinking about using a 1TB Time Capsule to replace the Windows desktop. all the Windows desktop is used for is file sharing and print server! I want to use the Time Capsule for Time Machine on both laptops as well as a file server. What's the best way to partition the TC drive? I was thinking 3 volumes, one ~250GB for each laptop and a ~500GB for file sharing.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Backing Up One Mac To Multiple Time Capsule

Apr 14, 2012

I'm using a Macbook Pro running OSX Lion. I use the Macbook to work from both home and office.Because I live very far from office, I usually stay in the city with my gf which means I might not go home for 7-10 days at a time.I do have a time capsule at home, everything works fine whenever I go there, backup is done seemlessly, catching up to whatever state the macbook is.Because I can be without backing up for days and sometime weeks, I'm considering getting another Time Capsule that I would setup at work.

Is it possible to backup a single Mac to multiple independant Time Capsule (or NAS ). My understanding is that Time Machine probably create indexes of what changed vs. what didn't so I am not convince it would correctly update two Time Capsule which might be at very different levels. If not possible I guess I'll have to look into another parallel backup scheme like Acronis or else (didn't really look into that yet)

Hardware :: Multiple Computers Share ITunes Library In Time Capsule?

Jan 31, 2008

The goal: To have all computers in the house use the same itunes library. Now the new ReadyNAS by NetGear has the option to put all the itunes music on there, and it shows up on the network as a shared library. Is there a way for multiple computers to share the same library on a external hard drive, or in this case, time capsule. I can see where a networked itunes library (like a shared computer) would work just fine for playing music, but you run into problems when say, you want to transfer songs to a ipod, iphone, etc.

One option would be for one of the computers be the main music server, and have that computer be the one to do the music transfers, but what if that computer is off. Multiple computers on same network, sharing same itunes library, but still able to manipulate the files?

Hardware :: Time Capsule With Multiple Computers - Backup Priority Details?

Jun 1, 2010

I have 2 Macs in the house, with a 3rd coming soon. I backup mine to an external hard drive using Time Machine, but neither of the others have a backup plan in place.

One user doesn't really need a robust backup solution, but the person getting a mac soon does.

I was thinking I could kill two birds with one stone if I got a Time Capsule. Now I've read all about how you can partition Time Capsule and stuff like that (and I'm technical enough that I could probably pull that off if I wanted to, but I don't think I do). What I haven't found out is what the Time Capsule does if two users have been syncing to it, and on the next backup it runs out of space.

OS X :: Stream Music From Time Capsule To Mac Mini / Hookup Mini To Time Capsule Via USB

Jul 19, 2009

I am planning on purchasing a mac mini solely for the purpose of playing music - it will be hooked up to a hi-fi amplifier and speakers. All of the music that will be on the computer will be in lossless format, which is very large. I will need a lot (320+ GB?) of storage.

I'm wondering if I can cut costs by buying an old 80 GB mini and augmenting its hard drive with a time capsule. I was planning on buying a time capsule anyway, so I could save something like $300. My questions are: would I be able to stream music from the time capsule to the mac mini? Would I be able to import music from itunes directly onto the time capsule? If I hook the mini up to the time capsule via USB, can it serve as a hard-drive, even if my internet is down? Is it going to be much more worth my time to buck up and buy a new 320 GB mini?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Best Practice When Backing Up Files?

Mar 22, 2012

I recently started using Carbon Copy Cloner after using only Time Machine as my back up solution. I do understand the purpose of each application TM and a cloner utility such as Super Duper or CCC but I was wondering what the best process is when using these two methods to backup you files. For instance I use TM to back up my files as frequently as possible to keep all my recent changes updated.

I don't see how I would keep my clone updated and make sure that when something happens I will have a workable boot disk and not something that contains corrupted files. In other words I think these cloner utilities have some sort of feature to keep your clone drive updated every time something changes. This got me wondering what if you update your clone drive and for some reason one of the updated file was corrupted.

Now you have a backup that contains bad files and may affect your system (corrupted fonts files etc.) and when you realized that something is not working right in your system you may want to recover from your clone but you will basically end up with the same problem because the bad files were also backed up. How do you ensure that your clone will always be ready and that it will not contain bad files?

Applications :: IPhoto Library (20GB) - File Too Big In Practice

Jan 22, 2010

I use iPhoto to manage my photos. Nothing fancy, mainly family photos. In the past I have been creating a new library for each year. I'm now been presented with a project that I am working on that makes this practice rather cumbersome. I have been tinkering with the idea of merging all my libraries, but I wonder about the file size. Each library is about 4 GB in size, so a merged one would be about 20 GB. Is that too big in practice? Basically I would like to get an idea of how big is too big for an iPhoto Library to get, or what some of y'all use for management of libraries in practice.

Laptops :: Time To Change - PC To Mac?

Jan 5, 2010

I'm tired of PCs -- the sluggish out-of-the-box performance that grows worse by the day, the instability, the inability of the system to handle simple programs without freezing; in short, the whole Microsoft dog-and-pony-show fiasco. However, fed up as I am, PCs are my comfort zone. I've resisted looking at Macs because of cost, the potential learning curve associated with a whole new system, and the uncertainty that Mac is really any better. I've used PCs for 10 years. I do not have any interest in how or why computers work -- I just want them to work with minimal effort, just like a car: turn the ignition key, shift into drive, step on the gas, go, step on the brake, stop, do basic maintenance, etc. Should I change and why or why not? What do I need to know when looking for a Mac? Will my current programs, video files, photos, MP3s, documents, etc run on a Mac, or is it a total ground-up change?

Hardware :: Can Time Machine Backup External Drive Attached To Time Capsule?

I have an external 500gb drive plugged into my brand new Time Capsule. The 500gb drive basically stores my entire library of music and my iTunes points to this external drive.

Is it possible to have time machine backup all information on the 500gb drive to the time capsule, so encase the external drive takes a dump, I don't loose my entire music library? Maybe time machine is already doing this, I am not sure.

Hardware :: Time Machine/Time Capsule/Airport Extreme With Verizon FIOS?

Nov 10, 2009

I will be getting my new Macbook Pro in the near future and am very interested in using Time Machine to wireless back up my data to an external hard drive. I know I can use Time Capsule to do this, but also hear a mention of just getting an Airport Extreme and my own ext. hd. My question is that I have Verizon FIOS Internet and my modem also functions as a wireless router. How would the Time Capsule/Airport Extreme work with this? Is it possible? I do not believe that the Verizon router supports wireless N, and I would like to take advantage of the faster speeds. If I were to connect a Airport Extreme to the wireless router, would I then have 2 routers to choose from and just use the Airport Extreme to use the wireless N? I'm very confused as to how I could make this work.

Hardware :: Time Capsule Vs Base Station - External Drive For Time Machine

Jan 11, 2010

As my 160N series Linksys router neither has gigabit ports, usb connector or dual band networking, I am looking for a replacement.

When it comes to Apple routers I am looking at 2 options - either the base station with an external USB drive or get a 1TB capsule with the buildt in drive and worries regarding reliability.

What I like about the Time Capsule is that it is neat to have all in one, takes up less space and only has 1 plug to attach, while Iike the idea that I can just connect a bigger drive later on the base station solution.

1. Will the connected USB drive function just like the internal drive in the Time Capsule for Time Machine use?

2. Will everything be transparent to Snow Leopard?

3. In case of both units with an attached USB drive - can I control who actually can see the drive and access it?

4. Do they support this DNLA thing so that e.g . PS3 can access an attached drive??

Hardware :: Connect To Time Capsule While Connecting To Wifi Network At Same Time?

Sep 22, 2009

I recently purchased a Time Capsule to use as a wireless hard drive. I connect to the internet both through wifi and ethernet to a educational network that does not allow extra routers, etc, to be added to the network, therefore I can not use the time capsule for this wifi.

I therefore want to connect to my early 2009 MBP17unibody to both the academic internet network for http/pop3/ftp/etc while simultaneously connecting to external hard drive to store data/itunes-library/etc.

I expect this has been asked before but I can't find any threads where it has. If anyone knows it would be highly helpful. I'd prefer to connect to both wirelessly but I could potentially put up with connecting to either or both with ethernet.

OS X Mountain Lion :: Time Machine Can't Complete Backup To Time Capsule

Jun 19, 2014

MacBook Pro mid-2012, 8GB RAM, 750GB hard drive, Mac OS X 10.8.5

One Time Capsule at home

One Time Capsule in vacation home

MBP backs up everything on internal hard drive to Time Capsule at home, where we live during summer and spring. When moving to vacation home in fall and winter, MBP backs up everything to Time Capsule in vacation home.

During the 6 months at each residence, the backups work great to the Time Capsule at that particular house. However, after some time (maybe a week?), Time Machine displays an error in Notification Center: "Time Machine can't complete backup to Home Time Capsule" (when in vacation home) or "Time Machine can't complete backup to Vacation Time Capsule" (when at home).

It's obvious that this occurs because Time Machine was set to back up to 2 Time Capsules and expects both of them to be reachable. Is there a way to suppress these Time Machine errors for the time that we're away from one of the Time Capsules?

OS X :: 10.6.1 Update Destroyed Time Capsule / Time Machine Setup

Sep 15, 2009

Ever since I updated to 10.6.1 I've had the following problems:

- Time Machine does not work at all with my Time Capsule. When it attempts to back up my data, Time Machine gets hung up with a status of "Making backup disk available..." and the icon in the menu bar just spins forever (the status appears in the menu bar icon's menu). I also cannot enter Time Machine; it gets hung trying to connect to the Time Capsule and I have to cancel it. Finder then takes up 100% CPU and I have to power down by holding in the power button (shutting down from the Apple menu doesn't work).

- I store my iTunes library in a folder called Music under the Data folder on the Time Capsule. When I open iTunes, it prompts me to choose my iTunes library. When I do, it starts to load the list of albums, then iTunes locks up and I must force quit it. This also causes my machine to not be able to shut down or restart from the Apple menu.

Oddly enough I can still access the Data folder from Finder with no issues. I just wanted to put this out there in case other people are having similar problems. It's pretty frustrating as all this worked fine before the 10.6.1 update.

Hardware :: Time Machine/Time Capsule Never Finishes

Feb 10, 2010

I recently bought a 500 TC and after a lot messing around i have the thing working, well near working, perfect.

The problem is, everytime it does a back up, which sometimes it has nothing to back up, it never finishes the job. In the end all i get is time machine giving me the "finishing back up" remark but the dam thing never actually finishes.

I have left it in the above state for sometimes hours just to see of it would finish and alas no joy!! Also, if i try and do anything else on my Macbook, while time machine is working, the "beach ball of death" apears and freezes my computer. Hence, everytime my Mac backs up i have to crash my computer which is annoying to say the least.

I did a lot of reading around various problems when using time machine and TC but can't find any solutions but lots of problems. TC is the worst apple product i've ever brought, it's been nothing but up hill trying to get this thing to work just like it says on the box.

I'm wondering whether its the TC or simply that time machine doesn't like my computer for some reason.

OS X :: Can See Two Hard Drives With Time Machine On Time Capsule?

Apr 20, 2009

I've been having a few problems with my TM backups since I got my new iMac (my MBA is working fine).

Something strange that I've noticed is when I enter into Time Machine (the program). Sometimes I see a bunch of my backups with times and dates where I can scroll through the different saves and restore if I want to. Other times though when I go into TM I only see the current save point. I can't scroll back and it only says Today on the right without any other save points. It is almost like I've only done one TM backup.

The other strange thing that I see is if I look at iStat. Sometimes it shows two Time Capsule hard drives and other times it shows only one. If I choose to change disk in Time Machine preferences the Time Capsule is listed twice. I don't think it has anything to do with a partition (which I never did) because both drives show the same used and free info (something like 377 free of 461) and I only have a 500GB drive.
