i was given i ibook with no reinstall disks the problem being some newb deleted the applications folder
so i have no browser, no system prefs or terminal out a zip me a copy of safari or irefox,system preferences and terminal
I run Address Book and "Open at Login". I'm running MacOS X Lion 10.7.4 and Address Book 6.1.2 on a MacBook Pro. I have just recently noticed that though the Dock shows the little blue indicator that Address Book is running and the Ctrl-TAB shows that Address Book is running, there is no way to bring up Address Book's Window. This started about a week or so ago.

I have an iBook G4 that's running Tiger 10.4.11 and the most recent version of Safari and just recently when I try to open up some web pages I get the error message "Safari can't open the page "http://whateverthewebaddressis" because it can't find the server". It will open some pages, some of the time and then a few minutes later if I try to open it again it will give me the error message. It is not a problem with my internet, as I also have a new iMac running leopard and Safari has never had a problem opening the same pages at the same time.

I need to be able to adjust the brightness, contrast, colour and speed of the movie file which is palying as a loop. There are no AV controls in 10.1 is there a way round this? I wondered about using Dark Adapted software to correct the visual elements. Or is there another software which might do this or an alternative software to Quicktime to play movies and adjust visual appearance. It is being used as part of an art installation and video work and this type of control is the best option for me. Is it possible to run an earlier version of Quicktime which has the AV controls if I partition my drive and install Leopard or Snow Leopard so that I can run these files as required on my laptop when used within the installation. If I can partition the drive, is it possible to partition the driive without losing eevrything which is currently running on my machine?

Right now I'm copying some files over to my hdd drive, getting ready to clear 68 something MB's off. I will then put Mac OS 7 in the root (almost). Will this power pc thing do it? It seems that it's like the old Macintosh's, just more powerful and better.

I noticed that videos will now pause if something else is running or downloading. This never happened before. I was thinking about reinstalling my OS but would like to avoid that. Does anyone have this same problem or have any tricks to speed this up again?
View 10 Replies View RelatedI was recently given a (supposedly) non-functional iBook. I reinstalled Tiger on it, and it did fine through the installation and initial startup. However, everything runs really, really slow. It will work normally for about 5 seconds, and then slow to a crawl. Opening system preferences just took 5 minutes. The beach ball shows up with nearly every click.
Anyone know what this means? Bad ram? Bad HD? It is the 14" 1.42 ghz model with 756 mb ram.
Oh yeah, the reason it was presumed dead was because the previous owner smacked it on something, and the LCD screen is bashed up. The rest of it seems physically fine, but it was subject to some sort of impact.

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy old clamshell iBook seems to be running very slow suddenly, I have to wait for typing to catch up with me and in this chatroom I go in, the chat screen keeps filling in and changing to same colour as background so I cant read what people have sent into room or and all buttons disappear until I run cursor over where they were!
It doesnt do this when I go in same room on iMac. It didnt used to do it on the iBook either! is it just getting old and needs replacing? Think mine was made in 2000, so is about 8 years old.

I have an iBook G4 with 800MHz and 512 MB. I understand this is the max I can run this on. I really cannot afford a new one now and wondered if there was a way to increase the memory at all or get it to run faster. I deleted programs I do not use but it is still slow.
A friend of mine gave me her old iBook G4 so I can fix it. Something was wrong with it (half the applications are missing, spotlight reindexes every time it restarts etc). So I'm just gonna reinstall everything from the ground up. My question is though, should I install Tiger again or would Leopard be better? The only thing I am afraid of is that Leopard would slow down the iBook since it's an older Laptop. Here are the specs:

I recently bought myself an Xtra monitor to hook up to my Ibook. I also used the hack to be able to split up the monitors to have full resolution of my new monitor.
but now my computer is running slower. somewhere in this forum I have found out that because of the hack my Ibook now has to work extra hard to be able to run on 2 monitors.
my question is, isn't there a way to be able to use my new monitor at full resolution and just shut of the original Ibook monitor? so my Ibook does not have to split up his memory? If I mirror them I Can't work on full resolution ...
somebody doing this?
Or... What do I do/buy/download that my Ibook can work on 2 monitors, but doesn't run slower.
My friend gave me his ibook 900mzh that was not displaying because he did not know how to fix it so I took a stab at it. I am not new to fixing computers as it is my profession but I'm new to Apples. Anyway, the first time I turned on the laptop the lcd displayed without any problems, every time after that it turns on randomly. After taking it apart about 3 times for various reasons and mistakes the laptop now displays every time I turn it on, but if I apply any type of pressure to the lower left side if the laptop the screen either goes black or gets small lines running through it. From what I have learned the only possible conclusion that I could come up with is the magnet that tells the ibook if it is open or closed has something wrong with it. It feels almost as if whenever there is any pressure around the hard drive the screen goes black. Any ideas, or tests I could do to fully determine the problem?

Every time it comes back **** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED **** and never that the volume is ok. This blue screen problem occurred after trying to hook up a wireless router and changing settings in airport. If anyone knows how I can fix this.

I know that it's capable (even though it's not supposed to be.) Would i run into severe problems if I did this as far as screen damage? I'm not sure if the heat comes through the keyboard and would create pixel problems.
View 2 Replies View RelatedOver the last few days I've noticed a problem with missing icons. It seems to mainly effect icons in the Trash but I have one or two missing icons for videos and apps within the Finder and on the Desktop. The icon is completely gone - I have to click on the filename to select it. Quicklook works OK (for video).
I can't think of anything I've installed that would have done it except Onyx, but I haven't run that in weeks. I did repair permissions a few days ago but I doubt that could break this. It persists after a reboot. I can't get it to happen on command, it just randomly occurs. Creating a New Folder always works OK.
I clicked the little jellybean thing on the top right, and it only makes the menubar appear and disappear, but the sidebar is still gone.i don't have a little dot on the left hand side so i have nothing to drag. i checked my finder preferences and the folders are still checked.but even after all that... still no side bar.

There is one under my user name, but it is empty, is that were it should be? (never paid attention to where I accessed it from) There is one in "Macintosh" under "Devices", but I'm sure the one I was using was somewhere else since I can no longer log onto my wordpress. Where SHOULD the folder be? and can I copy the one from "Macintosh" to that location?

I shall explain my problem.
Um, a few weeks ago[2 wks to be exact], i went overseas. Upon coming back, I on-ed my imac and found something very weird. There were icons at the bottom of my screen appearing to be a '?'. At that point of time I didn't know how to make em appear normal, thus i moved em to the thrash. I tried to open it earlier when it was a "?" but it wun open. However, what I didn't know and which was a careless mistake, i moved my microsoft office[entourage,word,ppt, i moved em into one folder] into the thrash as it appeared to be a question mark. However, when i checked the thrash, i saw no such folder... How do i fix this?
I did like everyone else and downloaded the Mac App Store yesterday. After it was installed and my computer restarted, I noticed that some of my apps were missing (Reeder in particular). This is a legitimate app downloaded from their site and now it is gone with no official Mac App in the App Store (even though their is one in the iOS store). Should I be worried about the Mac store removing other apps I have installed? If I have a "borrowed" version of say MS Office, will the Mac App Store detect and remove it once office becomes available in the App Store?

I've tried quitting safari, I've rebuilt permissions. The bookmarks are still there - I can 'show all bookmarks' from the bookmark menu - just the bar has gone
Any ideas where it might have gone to and how I can get it back - hadn't realised how much I depended on it for casual browsing unti it wasn't there.

I need to be able to hold my outgoing mail rather then sending it immediately. In Outlook I could set it to stay in the outbox until I was ready to send it.
I'd also like to have the "capitalize the first word of each sentence" feature that Word edit would do in Outlook.
I am presuming neither of these features are in iMail so my question is: Do I need to buy Outlook for Mac or Office for Mac to get these 2 features?
Is there a way to easily locate which media files are missing in my iTunes library instead of trying to play/view them one by one? I've found an app called iTunes library check, but it doesn't appear to work with my setup (I'm using multiple libraries with Libra, and the mentioned app only looks for media files in the iTunes folder).
