OS X Yosemite :: Spotlight Searches Fine But Then Clicking Result It Freezes?
Dec 3, 2014
I can search fine with Spotlight but when I click the result the spotlight freezes - right in the middle of the screen..If I click a text file it does not open the text file after unfreezing..So basically spotlight is completely useless.

I haven't found any info on this problem. When I search the Applications folder in the finder window for things over a certain file size, no apps show up as a result. I look for things over 10KB, yet still nothing appears. Apps otherwise show up fine in Spotlight.
I have reindexed many times. Perhaps my app permissions are wrong? My apps are read/write by staff and read only for everyone. Should there be read/write access specified for System or Wheel?

Well, I use Spotlight religiously on a daily, hourly, maybe minute basis. I have a ton of organized folders under my Documents and when I search for any of those folders in spotlight no results are yielded. Not even if the whole folder is typed out, or even just partial. I tried typing in many different folder names I have but nothing.
Then I tried typing in spotlight the names of Pages files, Excel Files, Word, etc...you name it. But nothing.

I need to have a question answered about searching in spotlight. Whenever I search for anything, I find what I need but after I open the "app/filename". Spotlight continues searching and it will continue to search until I "x-out" of the search field. Is this how spotlight works or can the search be turned off after selected a search result?

I recently acquired a PowerMac G5. To be honest, I wasnt even sure what it was, it was given to me, and I popped off the side panel and saw that is says G5. Anyway, it is used, but was given to me by a family member who runs an IT department. anyway, here is my issue.
This thing is VERY VERY SLOW. It boots up fine, in what I would call a normal speed, but as soon as everything appears to be ready, if I click on anything, I just get a beachball. My first assumption was that it was the hard drive, as I could hear a clicking/ticking sound, so I popped off the side panel and the sound is coming from the hard drive. I have read through alot of threads, and it seems that the general consensus is that if it is in fact the hard drive, then it would not boot up. The other thing that I read is that it could possibly be the logic board. Where exactly is the logic board located at?

how to find the path to a file in a Spotlight search result. In Snow Leopard I would get the path to a file or folder by just holding the mouse over the search result in Spotlight. I don't see that in Lion.

well where do i begin ?? basicly i purchased a ibook g4 14" 1.33ghz that had its harddrive upgraded by a apple service provider. About two weeks after this upgrade took place the harddrive started playing up and the machine would not see the boot volume on the drive when restarted or every now and then the machine would freeze after some time of use, a few hours maybe. i ran apple hardware test and it came back clean after zapping the pram and disk warrioring the drive it fixed this for a day then it started again oh well.
so i sent it back to the service provider who said yep its the hadrdrive goody !!! oh NO he calls back the next day and says the new harddrive is not reconized and that they tried a new ribbon cable WTF when i sent it in the machine saw the harddrive via target disk mode all the time it just didnt see the boot volume.
NOW his saying its the logicboard **** sake !!! so my question could this machines logicboard be fried when it was fine before i sent it in , i mean the ide controller was fine i checked it and now im faced with a brick !!!what do i do ????

in previous OS versions you could tell when spotlight is indexing by clicking the spotlight icon in the toolbar and the dropdown would tell you. now in yosemite how can we tell when spotlight is indexing? because i use mail.app a lot and search won't work properly until the indexing is done.

I am running a 2010 or so iMac under Yosemite updated to most recent and also same OS X on my 2011 MacBook Pro.
There are frequently times Spotlight won't find files I know are there—files I can see in a finder window pulled up next to the spotlight window that spotlight isn't finding. This is true in Mail as well. So I wanted to re-index. In these forums, I found an answer to solve the problem that said to drag my hard drive icon into the Spotlight Privacy window in system preferences and then remove it. I did the first step, and now it is listed in the "Prevent Spotlight from searching…" list. However, when I try to remove it, it won't remove. When I click on the "–" I get an error pane that says the location cannot be added or removed due to an unknown error!
How do I get my main hard drive off the list so it can be re-indexed?

The Spotlight process is using 95% of my CPU cycles and I cannot reboot or kill the process to stop it. This is a fresh install of Yosemite, in fact, I did this completely new install to fix Spotlight indexing problems, but all I did was fix the old one and uncover a new problem.
I installed Yosemite on a new 500Gb SSD, no migration from past installs whatsoever. It's fresh and clean and Spotlight finished its big index that it does upon install. But now, days later, the Spotlight process is still monopolizing my CPU. I have a Mid-2011 Mac mini, 2.7Ghz i7, it runs 2 of the 4 CPU processes to nearly maximum. What the **** is Spotlight doing? It's not indexing, I can look in Activity Monitor and see two mdworker processes but they are at 0.0% CPU utilization.
for fixing this runaway process? I am usually very good at fixing broken system processes but this one has me stumped.

After installing Yosemite on my iMac, Spotlight search results are minimal if at all (only contacts pop up)
I've adjusted Spotlight preferences by unchecking all search areas and rearranging the order of search preferences so documents, files and contacts are the only areas to search and still no luck.

I have recently upgraded to Yosemite but when I use Spotlight to search for a file spotlight does not search or include any files on my external hard drive. I have had one community member suggest to explicitly check the Spotlight index via command line. I tried to follow his instructions but my limited skills produced a zero. Unfortunately, he hasn't replied back for further instruction.

I have seen Spotlight. it is working fine as long as I use Latin characters. Since I work with Tibetan, I was used to search for Tibetan words across and within files. When updating to Yosemite, both Spotlight and Preview stopped working properly with Tibetan. I have checked with various friends and all have the same issue: Yosemite indexing and search methods have changed from Maverick to Yosemite.
letters of the alphabet are still indexed (like ཀ་ཁ་ག་ང་), but when they are combined (like རྒ་), spotlight is the blue, giving no answer. Again, this used to work very well before. I have tried reindexing, following Apple's suggestion (URL....), but no success. It seems to be related to the indexing method itself. This is a big issue as we are used to search with Finder—a feature that is normally powerful in OSX..Spotlight works well with simple letters...But no result with a simple stack (ར and ག on top of each other):

Before two weeks I have done a clean install of OS Yosemite in my MBP retina.
But unfortunately I have noticed some bugs such as:
- When I press Shut down the dock stays the half freezed, not completely disappeared and then the system shut down.
- Its a grey screen when I switch on from sleep
- It has completely freezed 3 times and restarts itself
- The wifi signal has been lost 2 times, in my home using my router wlan.
- The continuity doesn't work with my iPhone 6+.
- I don't know but I think that Mavericks were faster..
I have done PRAM and SMC reset but nothing.

Recently I purchased a brand new Mac Mini 2014 and sometimes I have this weird issue. Sometimes my mac has short freezes, i can't move cursor or type anything. when I reboot my issue is solved but I find it quite annoying that this is happening.
I googled this issue but didn't really find anything simular to my issue. It's like it running something very huge to process because if i move my mouse during the freeze it does move my mouse after the freeze.I monitored my memory but I haven't noticed anything strange (is it normal I only have 5-10% of my 8GB RAM left?)

I have waited quite some time until a first update to Yosemite was available.
I have installed Yosemite on both my IMAC and my MBP.
Since then, both computers behave similarly.
Even when no actions are performed, the memory fills up hour after hour, this takes a few hours.
Eventually the memory is so full that any operation takes 10 mn to complete, and it becomes impossible to perform any work.
In practice it is best to restart the computers every 4 hours.
The problem tasks are:
- Folder Actions Dispatcher
- and to a lower extend "kernel_task".

I just updated my Mac to Yosemite. I did a fresh install (erased disk and then restore documents and data with Time Machine) and installed all updates. Everything is working flawlessly except Mail. I can't make it run. Every time I opened it said that will import the mails, and a window appears and start the process. Yet, it does not go beyond there. I even leave my Mac for a whole night, and never went any further from the screen "preparing to import messages".

I changed my Mac to log in with my iCloud password, which I also recently changed. This is when things went... crazy.
• Upon reboot, my Keychain password will not work. No password I give Keychain will work.
• Safari just sits there with the beachball. Force-quit shows Safari as "Not Responding."
• Launchpad will not accept keyboard input
I've repaired the drive and preferences. No change.
For what it's worth, another account on the same machine does NOT exhibit these issues.

Some time back...maybe a couple months or a few...all my searches began running through a Bing interface. I'm hot happy with the change. Bing tends to prioritize search results for me, with lots of junk, paid ads coming up first and very few results on the first page. What has happened and how can I undo it and move on with Safari searches?
