OS X Yosemite :: 10.6.8 - Unable To Select HDD For Installation

Nov 30, 2014

I have an old MacBook6,1 of 2009 (the white one), with a 2.26GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB 1067 MHz DDR3 memory, 250GB of storage capability (100GB free), currently running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.

I'm trying to upgrade to Yosemite 10.10 (my hardware and software are both ok to do the upgrade, I checked it). The download from the appstore went ok, but when I launch the installation app and I am asked to select the volume in which I want to install the OS, I'm not able to select my "Macintosh HD" unity (the icon is light grey), and if I try to click on it anyway, a message appears: "Impossible to use this volume to start the computer" (actually my mac is in italian so I reported the translation of the original message: "Impossibile utilizzare questo disco per avviare il computer").

I found out that some people had the same problem with the installation of Lion (OS X Lion: il programma di installazione indica "Impossibile utilizzare questo disco per avviare il computer" - Supporto…), but all the proposed solutions rely on the possibility of accessing "recovery mode", a functionality that is not enabled in snow leopard 10.6.8. And the only  solution that doesn't rely on this feature (you can find it at the same link reported above), requests a redimensioning of the partition assigned to "Macintosh HD", that in my case is the only one that I have (I don't have any bootcamp partition), and even if l do it, it doesn't work.

OS X Yosemite :: After Installation Password Doesn't Seem To Work

Dec 4, 2014

I recently upgraded my OS with the free installation for Yosemite. When trying installing Yosemite my Macbook Pro running Mavericks asked me for the user password, which I provided.Yosemite installed fine, no problems.

Now, however, I am needing to install some software on my Macbook Pro after installing Yosemite. Like before, it asked me for my password, but this time it came back as incorrect. I tried several more times and it's still registering as incorrect.

I followed the directions shown here: OS X Yosemite: Reset a login password

However, I can't follow the instructions past step 4:

4. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Users & Groups.

5. Log in to your account....

When I click on Users & Groups, I don't see anything that allows me to log in to my account (I'm assuming it's because I'm already logged into it?). I only see options to Change the Password, open the Contacts Card, Login Options, and change Parental Controls. When I select "Change the Password", it asks me to enter the old password, which I can't do for obvious reasons.

So what can I do to recover my existing password?

I just installed Aperture 3.6 in Yosemite on my new Mac - after the installation I agreed to use one library for iPhoto and Aperture - next the installation appears to have imported over 3000 program / Resource images and stored them in my Iphoto librarys and projects and in Aperture? The images look like thumbnails to low resolution clip art and some date back to 2006.

OS X Yosemite :: Sent Emails Don't Show Up In Any Mailbox At All

Dec 2, 2014

Since I upgraded to Yosemite my Mail has gone amok. Emails show up directly in Archive, instead of for instance Inbox or Sent. Some sent emails don't show up in any mailbox at all, but apparently they reach the recipient.

How can I delete the Archive mailbox? It works totally different than how it is described in manuals. I have NEVER moved any email to Archive, but it is full of all sorts of emails from all the other mailboxes. I want ALL my received emails in the Inbox and my sent emails in the Sent box.

OS X Yosemite :: Finder Not Working Well - Show Folders Empty

Nov 30, 2014

For some times now I have problems with finder. First I thought it was a problem accessing the network but I also have the problem with the local folders!!

After logging to my account, it works well for some times and then suddenly (may be after accessing machine on my network - Synology NAS) finder begin to show all folders as they are empty!!!

The funny thing is that if for instance I do a "file/open" within an app or do an attachment and so access a "windows like finder" it works!!

But if I use the finder ... folders are empty (shown as ...).

The only thing to get everything back is to restart the computer (and many times I have to hard stop the machine as the finder is not working anymore and my mac mini don't want to restart. I keep the desktop background and nothing happened!!

The strange thing is that it seems I don't have the problem on my MacBook Pro!! The mac mini was a clean install!

OS X Yosemite :: Can Mail Show Colored Flags Instead Of Words In Viewer Flag Column?

Dec 10, 2014

OSX's Mail.app used to display the actual colored flag in the (classic layout) viewer's flag column; visible and compact. I've noticed recently (since the iOSemite update?) that it displays the words (Red/Orange/ etc.) instead. With a narrow column that used to accommodate the flags, this now shows "R…/O…/ etc. instead. Since my Mail window is only a 1/2 screen wide, there is simply no room for an inch-wide column.

Is there a way to make Mail show the actual flags in that column, rather than the verbose names of the flags?

If not, I can of course rename the flags into a single-character name, so it fits

OS X :: Moving .app Files Around After Installation?

Sep 23, 2010

I like to keep my Applications directory tidy, so I have my software in several sub directories. I haven't had any problem moving the .app files around until I installed Virtual Box. It installs under Applications without asking anything, and if I just plain move the .app file somewhere else, the program doesn't run.

So, coming from Linux, my first instinct when a sw doesn't work from it's GUI launchers is to try run it from command line to see any potential error messages, and sure enough:

Code: sakus@MBP13 /Applications/Utilities/VirtualBox.app/Contents/MacOS $ ./VirtualBox

VirtualBox: supR3HardenedVerifyDir: Failed to open "/Applications/VirtualBox.app/Contents/MacOS": No such file or directory (2)

So my question is - as I'm still not too familiar with these .app bundles - based on that error message, which file should I look for to try and edit the hard coded directory paths ?

When I try to install from the upgrade disc with custom installation, not upgrade, I get to "Expanding Windows Files" and then it hangs at 0% forever. I have a 320gb external hard drive. Windows On Mac :: Installation Copies Files But Wont Boot?

Sep 27, 2009

I am having some issues with my unibody macbook 13" running Mac OS X 10.6.1 and installing XP professional SP2 via bootcamp. I have it as a VM in vmware, and it runs fine there, but I need to install XP with bootcamp, because I need to run some graphics intensive software that is windows only. It seems that my mac has been against this movement since I even thought of it.

First, the boot camp assistant says there are unmovable files in the way, and that I cannot partition my harddrive. I end up clearing 120 GB of data off my 200gb harddrive, and still, the unmovable files are in the way. One copy of iDefrag and many hours later, I can finally partition it. I create a 12GB partition for windows.

I insert my windows disk, click continue, and the computer restarts and loads the windows installer. Things start to seem fishy when I realize the drivers take ages to load up. Eventually it loaded, and that's when I noticed the bootcamp partition was FAT32. I reformat it to NTFS and continue. It copies the files(or so it says...) and restarts. when It goes to boot from the windows partition, it says hal.dll is missing.

Reading this, I grab a copy of that file off of my virtual machine, and open the boot camp partition in Finder, yet it is completely empty. Now I am quite confused.

Since it seemed to me that I hit a dead end, I trashed the entire partition, and started all over. Boot camp assistant, 12gb partition, insert disk, restart, etc. This time, however, I left the format as it was(FAT32). I install windows again, the files copy(or so it says... again...) and it restarts. When it goes to boot the windows partition, it says Disk Error, press any key to restart, but the computer is completely locked up.

Now i am out of ideas, yet I need to get windows installed ASAP, I need it for my mechanical drawing class.

So, has anybody ran into this before? and does anybody have any insight as to how I could get this working?

Mac Pro :: Why Doesn't The Fan Rev-up Higher To Remain In The Low 70's Like It Did Before

Feb 29, 2012

I'm the proud owner of a wonderful and powerful Mac Pro 4,1 (2009) which I have "modded" to support a 6-core Intel XEON processor. (Just using the "official" MacPro5,1 firmware). No problems at all with that.I installed the processor using the finest thermal paste, trying to spread it very evenly and not too thick or too thin, and then refitting the sink appropriately by tighting each single screw by just a slight turn and then the one across, and so on.Now I'm unsure if the thermal paste works perfectly or not. My temperatures, under very intense and heavy load with multiple applications (prima95, memtest, etc) it reached the low 70's by winding up the fans. But suddenly, a few minutes later, it the fans slowed down and the temp raised to mid 90s. so I turned it off...Now using an enconding application, like handbrake, I do get values of high 70's to low 80's but the fan remains (too) slow (in my opinion)Is this normal? Am I just too cautious? Why doesn't the fan rev up higher to remain in the low 70's like it did before?

OS X :: Flash Drive Containing .M4V Files Don't Show Up On PC?

Sep 14, 2010

I have a 1GB flash drive..of which i've placed some iTunes formatted home movies in to hand to my dad who has a Windows XP laptop.

When this flash drive is connected to his laptop and I discover the flash drive on XP, and try to open it...nothing happens. Nothing opens. At best it says that in order to view the files in the flash drive that Windows XP needs to reformat the flash drive, but in the process it states that it will have to erase all content and data to do so..

So now i'm wondering how can I transfer these movie files from my MBP to his Windows XP laptop.?

I've only tried this on flash drives and really hope it wouldn't be the same situation if I used my external hard drive instead; as in connecting my external HD which had a ton more home movies, connect it to his laptop and hopefully it showing up... My external HD isn't running Time Machine or anything like that, it's just a clean External HD where I throw in a lot of home movies...
