OS X :: Won't Work With Complete Restore
Dec 26, 2008
I am about to wipe my hard drive as I have accumulated a bunch of garbage over time. The only thing I want to keep is my playlist in Itunes and my bookmarks with all of my passwords in Safari. Can this be done? It would be great if i could make this happen.

My superdrive in my macbook pro kicked the bucket and I have to hand the whole thing over to apple to fix. Following the advise of many people online, I will be wiping my hard drive before dropping the machine at their doorstep. I have the machine backed up via Time Machine on an external drive. Will I be able to restore it to its current state using Time Machine and my backup after it returns from Apple.
I have sensitive and important data on the laptop...this is why I need to be sure to get it all back.

I'm using Time Machine which makes periodic backups of my data to Time Capsule a couple times a day. If I had a problem with my computer would I be able to completely restore all of the data like the way it was?

I upgraded the hard drive in my Macbook Pro from a 500G to a 1T drive... Each time I try to restore, it fails at the same point with a "file error" and asks to restart the process. How can I get by thsi without re-backing up the old drive to the Time Capsule?

I recently (2 months ago) got a 17" MBP, and I used Target Disk/Firewire to "clone" the contents of my 2 year old iMac onto it. It all worked great, and went fine, however last night I attempted to use Boot Camp to create a 64GB partition to install Windows 7, and got the dreaded "The disk cannot be partitioned" error, "please format your HD and reinstall OS X" message.
I ran various tools (Disk Utility from OS X Install DVD, Disk Warrior, MainMenu, Onyx, etc) to try repair and perform maintenance, then I bought iDefrag and ran a full defrag overnight, but this morning I noticed it had failed half way through, and it too suggested reformatting the HD.
I have a full Time Machine backup on my 1TB USB drive (connected to my Mac Mini, it backs up to the MBP over the network) so my question is how easy is to it completely format my MBP hard disk and restore a complete Time Machine backup? I'm completely panicking even about the though of it, I've never done a reinstall/format since I switched to Macs in July 2008!!

So, I've searched everywhere for the answer to this and couldn't find anything, plus this is my first Mac, so if this is a stupid question... well, let's not freak out on the newbie.
With that said:
So I finally took the plunge and bought a new 13.3" MacBook Pro (obviously running snow leopard). My girlfriend has the last generation white MacBook (running leopard) . I was curious if I could take my Restore Disk, that came with my MBP, and have her use it on her old Macbook to get her running Snow Leopard???
Again, this could be a stupid question, but she was really hoping to get Snow Leopard running on her Mac so I figured I would at least ask before I tried it.Knowing my luck, I'd try it out and it would screw up her computer somehow.

I spilled coffee on my keyboard. Now, some of my keys don't work. Namely, my apostrophe key, the letter "p", my return key, and delete. Also both slashes. And my arrows, save for Mr. Right. My question is this: am I screwed? is there any chance I can restore function to these? I have a nice big bottle of isopropyl alcohol at my disposal and I can pretty much have my way with this thing. It's beyond warranty so, short of blowing it up, I'm not too worried about any minor damage I might do to it. anyway, if anyone can throw out some advice, whether it's "this is how you fix it," or "toss it through a window," I would be endlessly grateful.

My Macbook came up with an error, saying the HD needed repairing - I had no problems, and wish I hadn't listened to it!
After trying to repair, it came up with errors, then wouldn't reboot. I had no problem previous to this point. The only option seemed to be to restore from Time Capsule.
Time capsule restored overnight, but then just went to the spinning wheel and doesn't look like it has completed the process. The last time I looked it said 35 mins to complete the restore, but now there is a grey screen and a spinning wheel.

I used Drive Genius 2 (from DVD) to defrag my HDD and I think it did but in addition to that it apparently messed everything up so I couldn't boot from it = I had to do a restore from my Time Machine backup and so I did but then everything got messed up in terms of permissions, and after a restart - well, it didn't start so, once again, same restore from Time Machine, and this time everything seems fine, except for the fact that my backup drive tells me that I have no access to it - I have no permission to even open it! And thus I can't use it as a backup or anything else, it's a 1TB useless disk!
Question: Is there any way to "regain" access to my HDD? Any way to have it continue as a backup drive without deleting the "old" backups stored on it now? I also have a small 60GB BootCamp partition with Vista () on the 1TB backup drive.

My computer broke down so I had a repaired and the original software was re-installed and it worked perfect. Whenever I restore from Time Machine, I get the kernel panic error. I have to reload the original software and it works perfect again. I tried using Migration Assistant, but it fails every time after 30 minutes of saying 1 minute left to transfer documents. I go in to Time Machine and view my external hard drive and all my stuff is still there, except I noticed my applications are crossed out. At least the non-default ones. That may just be because they're not currently loaded.
What can I do from here? I was using Lion before my computer went down. I'm now using the OSX install DVD. I also have the Snow Leopard, but haven't tried that, if it even makes a difference.

How long should I be stuck on the screen "calculating space required to restore data"? I've been on this screen for about 20, 30 minutes. The "hash mark wheel" is spinning, but just not seeing anything new. Is this normal? My backed up data is ~100 GB.

So here's my question:I've owned my share of MacBook Pro's, so I'm somewhat familiar, but not an expert. I got my mini last Friday from cowboom (a Best Buy affiliate), and since it's a pre-owned, it only came with the power cable and HDMI to DV-I adapeter. For those that ordered these, a majority of the people posted that it did not come with an OS, but the Internet Restore option fixed the trick. So I powered it on and got the flashing folder with the question mark. No OS. I did the Internet recovery and ran it through all the way to the the reinstall Lion screen. When asking what drive to install it on, there were no drives. I closed the installer and ran the disk utility and the only available drive was some basic drive that had a capacity less than 2GB. No other drives. I booted from my Lion that's on USB, but there's no drive to install it on. Any suggestions? I checked the warranty and the warranty cannot be verified. Some buyers said they had warranty from 8 months and up. One said his warranty showed starting from the day he restored his mac. I'm guessing because it was never registered I made an appointment tomorrow to take it to apple but is there something that can help avoid the trip?

A year ago I acquired a used G3 B&W Rev. B that had a defective hard drive. The mac will boot from an OSX 10.1.2 disc just fine, and a 40 GB Western Digital drive (WD 400) that I installed (as master) shows up and appears to format normally. However, after everything goes off without a hitch and the OS begins to install, the installation halts about two-thirds of the way through and I'm treated to a message that says the installation has failed because it couldn't "write files to disk".
- So far, I've tried this installation 4 times
- My copy of Mac OS originally came with an iBook, and I'm not sure if that's a possible issue or not, even though it's listed as compatible with my computer
- It's got a single stick of RAM (PC100 128 MB) installed in the last of four slots moving inward towards the motherboard
- I know for a fact that the hard drive I'm using is functional ( I pulled it out of an old gateway I'd been using as a music server until a month ago)
- I know that with older macs ( and computers in general) having the right firmware updates and compatible hardware installed is crucial, but I don't where I went wrong

Every time I try to download it, it says error about 80mB into the download.
Then it tells me to look for the package through Finder but I can't find it.
And it happens EVERY TIME I try to download it.
It's driving me nuts that I'm wasting my precious internet on this pointless downloading! I could have had the update by now!

Since i updated my Mac Pro to 10.9.3 i keep getting complete freezes. It only happens when switch from my main screen to my second one.I first thought the old 'non' mac GPU in my 2009 Mac Pro was the issue. Recently replaced my 2009 with a 2013, and i seem to get minimum of 1 freeze a day.
Its usually within an hour after start up.My brother told me it could be the connection to my USB 3.0 raid bay due to the speed differences, but even with that one disconnected it freezes.I just did a competence repair in disk utilities lets see the results now.But i think its the latest update that has a bug.

I've just sold my old Macbook Pro. I did a clean re-install recently after I got a new laptop but must have typed in my name during the process, so that the main account is now associated with the login name. I was able to change the login name easily by going to Sys Preferences->Accounts, but couldn't change the name associated with it (mine). The person who now bought the computer would like to change it to his name. Just called Apple and the person on the phone didn't seem the technologically most savvy and suggested to simply do a complete re-install. This seems 1) a waste of electricity (given that all that needs to be changed is two words somewhere on the hard drive) and 2) is problematic as I kept the Leopard CD and would need an 8 GB DVD which is hard to find where I live. So are there any other ways to do this apart from a re-install?

I have been the proud owner of a Macbook Pro 2.5Ghz with 4GB RAM, running Leopard 10.5.6 for just under a year and I have never been able to get Time Machine to backup my files properly. Instead I have been backing up my really important files manually to an external NAS drive.
However, I would like to back up all files to an external USB drive using Time Machine. I have a Freecom USB2 drive which I purposely bought, but when I try to perform the initial back up I get a message telling me there isn't enough space.
My MacBook has a 250Gb HDD and my USB drive is 500Gb (465Gb available), so I have no idea why I am getting this message. I have ensured that no other devices are connected in case it was also trying to back up those (USB & NAS drive), but still get the same message. It says I need 698Gb of space to perform the full backup - where is it getting this from?!
Within the options it shows me a panel containing an entry 'Time Machine Backups' with a size of 154.4Mb, which I'm guessing is the directory that I am trying to save the backups to.
I'm probably doing something obviously stupid but would appreciate it if somebody could point it out for me.

My computer has started freezing repeatedly. Seems to occur on random software programs - nothing obvious. Cannot even move the pointer. I can only shut down from the power button. I do not have start up discs with me (out of the country and no where near an apple store). I desperately need my computer to work!! Does anyone have any ideas of what I can try. HD test says it's ok. Tried SMC restart and that didn't help. Computer is not running hot either.
