OS X :: Can I Change Name Associated With Computer Without Complete Re-install
Dec 12, 2008
I've just sold my old Macbook Pro. I did a clean re-install recently after I got a new laptop but must have typed in my name during the process, so that the main account is now associated with the login name. I was able to change the login name easily by going to Sys Preferences->Accounts, but couldn't change the name associated with it (mine). The person who now bought the computer would like to change it to his name. Just called Apple and the person on the phone didn't seem the technologically most savvy and suggested to simply do a complete re-install. This seems 1) a waste of electricity (given that all that needs to be changed is two words somewhere on the hard drive) and 2) is problematic as I kept the Leopard CD and would need an 8 GB DVD which is hard to find where I live. So are there any other ways to do this apart from a re-install?

I can't for the life of me figure out how to do this. When I fill something in on the internet when I start putting my name in the fields it put's my address and all my other info in the blanks. How do I change the info that should go there. That is my old address and I want to update it for my new one.

A year ago I acquired a used G3 B&W Rev. B that had a defective hard drive. The mac will boot from an OSX 10.1.2 disc just fine, and a 40 GB Western Digital drive (WD 400) that I installed (as master) shows up and appears to format normally. However, after everything goes off without a hitch and the OS begins to install, the installation halts about two-thirds of the way through and I'm treated to a message that says the installation has failed because it couldn't "write files to disk".
- So far, I've tried this installation 4 times
- My copy of Mac OS originally came with an iBook, and I'm not sure if that's a possible issue or not, even though it's listed as compatible with my computer
- It's got a single stick of RAM (PC100 128 MB) installed in the last of four slots moving inward towards the motherboard
- I know for a fact that the hard drive I'm using is functional ( I pulled it out of an old gateway I'd been using as a music server until a month ago)
- I know that with older macs ( and computers in general) having the right firmware updates and compatible hardware installed is crucial, but I don't where I went wrong

I have the 27'" Imac with slight yellow tint on bottom and grey bar shadow running along the bottom as well. Additionally, the buzzing sound when brightness lowered below 50%. The computer works great otherwise and I don't hear buzzing when at normal distance from screen. My dilemma: Apple has offered to send a technician to my home to replace the screen, and they said that whould also fix the buzzing noise at lower brightness at the same time.
My question is have people been satisified or had better luck with screen replacements rather than simply asking for a new computer in exchange. If I'm simply swapping displays to get the same results, or even exchanging computer to only get the same results or worse, I would rather delay this interaction until a real fix is in place. My current Imac has no dead pixels, and works great except for these issues. HD makes a grumbling noise, but I think WD Black Caviars are known to be a bit noisy.
Any advice on way to go would be appreciated. Swap out display? Exchange computer? Stand pat?

I purchased Call of Duty Modern Warfare, a large 7gig download, the download was interrupted and I had to re-boot. In the App Store under Purchases it lists the purchase but not installed. When I click install, box changes momentarily but then nothing happens. There is no option to resume, or re-download. Perhaps the download was complete before the interruption but there is no indication anywhere under launch or in Finder. What are my options? Is this common? I am already regretting buying such a large program.

Since upgrading to Lion my MacBook Pro (Mid 2009) it keeps freezing and it takes much longer to boot compared to Snow Lepoard.I upgraded it from 2GB to 4GB hoping it would run smoother but it was so hot in operation (I literally couldn't hold it after just a few minutes) I had to take it back to 2GB. I also notice that all my apps return on logon even though I have specificed not to re-open apps.I have verified and repaired the disk using Disk Utility and also ran a supposed recovery of Lion but it took 1hr (including Lion download) however when I logged back on it was the same software and data etc; is it possible to do a complete data wipe and install Lion? It has updated to the latest software however I'm starting to get very frustrated; just earlier the whole thing froze and I had to force it to power off.

So I am putting Windows 7 on my MBP, so I can play FFXIV, and I noticed I don't have the install disk for my MBP, so that I can install the drivers for the laptop. Is there somewhere I can download these onto a USB and then install them in WIN 7 from my USB drive?

I've previously installed OSX on my MBA using an external DVD, using a wifi remote disc option, but because of my current network situation (and current lack of external disc drive) I'm wondering if it would be possible to install OSX on the Air through a direct ethernet connection to another Mac.
Basically it would go like this: MBP <> ethernet cable <> USB ethernet adaptor <> MBA
Possible? Any problems? Any special procedures I need?

I just spent the past 5 hours trying to install Windows 7 via BootCamp on my new 27" iMac.
It would get past the initial installation and then after the final reboot just before it runs off the hard drive and asks you for a serial number, the screen would go black and I couldn't do anything.
So I found this solution here:
[URL]
Except the instructions on that site are for an iMac with an NVIDIA Graphics Card. The 27" iMac has an ATI card. So at step 6 I deleted the file named: ATIKMDAG.SYS from the same directory.
Then clicked restart and was able to finish through the install process.
Summary: (from a response below)
The way the iMac 27" DisplayPort works in the system, when installing windows it will output to BOTH the iMac screen and DisplayPort.
When Windows 7 install is reaching a certain point it is making a choice as to which display it believes it the primary display. ]
If you have a display plugged into your iMac's display port or have that ability you will see your install is working just fine, the problem is just that windows believes the active displayport on the back of the iMac is the primary display and moves all video to the port..
that is why you see a black screen. Rebooting and doing the driver deletion steps does work as it will allow windows to run on a generic driver unable to make that choice.
Note: you will need an additional monitor and a Mini-Display Port adapter to plug the monitor into the iMac to use the above method.
The BootCamp driver that loads only give a max resolution of 1980 X 1440 so everything looks stretched. Installing the ATI drivers from ATI did no good. (See the update below to fix this)
Also be aware that only the keyboard will be active during the install so you will need a usb mouse unless your really good at navigating Windows with only a keyboard.
UPDATE:
After installing Windows 7 if you run windows update there is an update available for the ATI card. Once installed and restarted the resolution is now fixed.
When you go into the resolution settings in Windows 7 the display now shows up as a color LCD and the max available resolution is 2560 x 1440.

I'm new to Apple Comps, not having owned one since my Apple IIe long ago. I received a MacBook as a gift last weekend. I've spent the past few days trying to square things away due to a problem. The gifter bought the laptop at Best Buy and had the kinder there set it up and install Office. Unfortunately, the BB people used the name of the purchaser. I've been able to change the name on the Home folder and also the admin account by enabling the root user and tinkering with things. I still see "Snuffy Smith's MacBook" whenever I open Finder. I'm hoping there's any easier fix than to reinstall the OS. I'm running the comp under OS X 10.5.6.

I cannot change the computer name on Lion on preferences panel (web sharing).
I have read existing threads and tried following solutions:
1: reinstall a clean osx lion
2: restore from time machine
3: change NetBIOS` name
it is very strange that when i turn off my wifi, i can change it and once i turn on wifi the computer name will be changed back automatically.

I want to be able to change the computer icon on my new 2010 Mac mini. I've read several places that all of the icons are held in /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Resources. Well, I've gone there, and I cannot find the Mac mini 2010 icon. Every single other computer is there, including the old pre-2010 minis, except for my computer itself. So, where is the icon in the system?

I have had the problem of getting the message that the computer name is already in use on the network (it isn't) and adds a number to my user computer i.e. username Mac Pro (3). It just changed last week to (2), and the name change interfered with several pieces of software that look for a specific user. Now it is up to (3).
I removed the (3) behind the the name in the System Preferences/Sharing, but the username Mac Pro (2) now shows in the shared computers, will not connect, and I can't find a way to remove it

I have a black macbook, and the icon in my sidebar is a white macbook. I'd like to change this to be accurate to my computer. I came up with a "fix" of sorts, but I'm looking for a better one. Here's why:
In coretypes.bundle>Contents>Resources, I see both black and white macbook icons (com.apple.macbook-black.icns and com.apple.macbook-white.icns). I backed up the white one and copied the black one over the original white one. That makes my computer icon black, but it also makes my wife's white macbook have the black icon in the shared section of the sidebar.
I changed everything back, and made sure that imac.icns is the black macbook; it was originally, but I backed it up and rewrote it by copying the black macbook icon anyway. No dice, my icon is still white.
Is there any way to make the icons accurate for both my computer and my wife's? I know it's aesthetic, but now it's become a pet peeve of mine.
