OS X :: Won't Fix Disk Utility Error
Nov 26, 2008I get this (screenshot) when I try verify disk in Disk utility.
View 7 RepliesI get this (screenshot) when I try verify disk in Disk utility.
View 7 RepliesI had windows vista installed but suddenly the audio decided to become faulty, after spending a day trying to fix it i realized I have a windows 7 install disc so i might as well just replace vista with windows 7. I didnt take care of vista or ever register it so it became quite a task to upgrade so i just deleted the partition and went to create a new one and just do a full install of windows 7.
I made the partition but the wrong format, so i removed it through boot camp assistant and created another, except now it keeps giving me the "back up the disk and use disk utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using boot camp assistant again" Now, I'd love to do this, except I have no idea what I'm doing and WHY this error has occured. After becoming frustrated I switched from my imac to my macbook pro and received the same error when trying to create a partition. So any help on exactly what I need to do would be a HUGE help. I only use windows for music production (I know, seems backwards, but I use Sony Acid and FL Studio so I'm stuck with Windows)
I'm running OSX 10.4.11 on a 12" PowerBook 1.5 GHz with 1.25 GB of RAM and an 80 GB HD.
When I run the disk Utility to Verify Disk, it ends with the message, "Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit." This happens if I run the Disk Utility from the hard drive, from the OSX installation disk or from an external hard drive.
The Repair Drive button is always grayed out no matter where I am running the disk Utility from, too.
So far, I haven't had any other unusual things with the operation, but I'm concerned that this could be an early warning of problems to come.
Has anyone else had this problem or have a clue?
I have cloned the entire hard drive onto an external drive with Carbon Copy Cloner. I know PPC systems won't boot from a USB drive, but I was considering booting from the install disk, re-formatting the drive from there and then re-installing from the external by running CCC from there. I hope someone will have a direct solution to repairing the drive without doing all of that.
I just got my computer yesterday and when running the "repair disk" function, I already get an error! Since I used migration assistant to move everything off my old mac to my new mac, I'm not interested in reinstalling the whole OS and transffering all my files again. This is a new computer, and shouldn't have this problem this early. I also get the same result when starting up in the recovery partition. How do I resolve this?

i'm trying to format a spare external, it's currently formatted to ms-dos for back up dutys on my PS3 but i want to change it to mac os extended
i've just plugged the drive in ( USB ), nothings running on it, or open on the computer from the drive, but disk utility wont erase it, i've checked permission and everythings fine but it just keeps giving me this error
google and apple fail, only thing i can find linked to it refers to operating systems running on the drive,
I ran a fix permissions today, and got the following errors. I have no idea what they mean, and am a bit concerned. Anybody have any idea what this stuff means?...

I keep getting this error when trying to erase an external hard drive with Disk Utility. When I restart, the error appears again. I've seen others with this problem but haven't found a solution. I've tried removing iTunes from Applications and deleting select iTunes receipts.
I'm running OS 10.4.11
I clicked "Verify Disk" and i got that, the other two options worked. I read up on this on Apple's site but I am not having any other issues than the notice. I was told to run Disk Utility ever so often to keep my mac fast. I just happened to do it today and I got that. I am trying to avoid having to do ANY sort of reformat.. I don't have any means of backup. Like I said I am not having any other problems. I am able to restart and log in without any problems. Should I be worried about this since there is no other issues besides the notice itself?
View 17 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu on my iMac, and it made 2 new partitions: DISK0S3 and Linux Swap. Here's what my disk utlity looks like: When I try to remove Linux Swap, it says that the partition (map is too small. When I try to remove DISK0S3, nothing happens and it keeps running forever before I press +Q to quit.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have spent all day with a colleague wrestling with a 4 and 1/2 year old G5 tower that has been throwing up all sorts of cranky errors. (i.e. firefox crashes, flash crashes, programs wont load, itunes stops working, firewire drives make it insane). As part of the diagnostic flow, I attempted to verify permissions on the core HD. Disk utility only took a couple seconds to determine that there is some unknown error with the HD, and it cant continue. This leads me to believe that we are dealing with a flailing drive, which very well MAY be the root of the problems! Time to make an external clone onto a fresh HD, and see if that helps.
Install CCC 3. Open CCC 3, it hiccups on the dock, and then nothing. *roll eyes*. Install super duper. Run super duper. Now super duper refuses to let me make a bootable clone of the core HD? Fine, if that is how you want to play this game. I get two SATA enclosures. Put the suspect drive in one, and then a fresh drive in the other. Plug both into my MBP where i run a CCC bootable clone. Couple hours later, it is complete. Plug the new clone into the G5 tower, and it does not see it as a bootable drive. Okay, lets try the CCC clone again. Same result. I am desperate for options.
I am desperately trying to burn a ISO file to a USB and external HD but Disk Utility does not want to. Instead I get the error message "Could not validate source - error 254". So there must be a problem with the source which is the ISO file.
I already tried setting the Partition Map Scheme to both Master Boot Record and GUID Partition Table. I also formatted the drive to FAT and HFS+. I cannot find the cause of this error. It clearly looks like Disk Utility does not like burning ISOs to USBs or HDs.
However, I really really need to this since I cannot burn ISOs with my SuperDrive which is also a common problem [URL]with my MacBook Pro.
I just restore my Mac OS to a single partition and then I tried re-partitioning but it's giving me an error.
I've tried several times, tried using different sizes every time. My HD's capacity is 250GB, and I've got 108.95GB free. So I am sure that making a new partition of 35 - 40 GB is not a big deal. I also tried using Disk Utility, both from the Mac OS install disc and while using the Mac OS itself, but it keeps giving me this error. I do not want to format my Macintosh HD's partition because I don't have an external HDD on me at the moment so I will not be able to back up. I have a lot of important data that can not be deleted.
I am trying to format a SDHC card on my MBP. I am trying to create a recovery SDHC disk for my MBP.
The disk is a Transcend 16gb (class 10).
I formatted to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) w/ a GUID Partition Table but after this, Disk Utility is now showing only 10.38 gb of usable space, but finder is showing me the full amount (15.79 gb). When I look in finder there are NO files or folders on the drive.
I tested trying to put more than 10.38 gb worth of files on the disk and was told there was not enough space. If I format the disk to anything other than Journaled, I get the full 15.79 gb. Has anyone ever experienced this before?
I bought a 1TB Iomega Prestige drive, it worked great for a few months. Started making loud clicking sounds. Iomega sent me a replacement drive (refurbished).
I am using it as my time machine backup in Leopard, so it was really just a matter of plugging it in, formating it with the OSX file system and setting it up for time machine.
When attempting to format from Disk Utility, I get an error (see screenshot).
(Additional info: I can access it and format it without any problems from Windows 7 based PC).

After upgrading to 10.5.7, numerous permission errors highlight regularly in Disc Utility, which I run weekly (probably for too often). I never saw these with 10.5.6, or for that matter any earlier incarnation of the OS. I have also noticed progammes hanging more than before (especially Mail). I have run DiskWarrior and that didn't report anything untoward. Should I give up worrying about this and maybe join the Foreign Legion instead?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a G4 powerbook from around 2004 that was running slow so I tried updating the mac software since I hadnt done it in a while after downloading and installing the suggested items my computer has gone a lil crazy. First off i noticed my dock is completely missing and I've tried numerous things to fix it that were suggested to me but nothing has worked.
Next I attempted to do some restoring using disk utility that had also been suggested and it turns out disk utility wont even run I get the error message "You cannot open the aplication "disk utility" because it may be damaged or imcomplete". This message also appears when i attempt to open safari or itunes.
I am no longer able to find my restore discs so I dont have that option at the moment, any help would be greatly appreciated, I am about to go back to school to pursue another degree and not having to buy a new comp would be great news.
here are the items that were installed with the update:
2009-10-25 17:23:21 -0600: Installed "Java for Mac OS X 10.4, Release 7" (1.0)
2009-10-25 17:23:47 -0600: Installed "Migration and DVD/CD Sharing Update" (1.1)
Steps to reproduceOpen Disk Utility Drag an ISO image into the left sidebar Insert an USB Stick with enough space to contain the image Go to any restore tab in Disk Utility Drag the ISO file to the source Drag the Volume from the USB drive to the destination Check erase destination Hit restore
Results for me are (in any number of varieties to do this) either "Invalid argument" or in the log "Could not validate source - error 254".
what utilitiy fixes this?

I am trying to create a new image from a DVD and burn it to a new DVD using the MAC Disk Utility "New Image" option. The source DVD is 4 G and my target folder is on my external HD which has 298G.. plenty of space. However, whenever I attempt to SAVE the existing DVD to my external HD, I am getting the error message that the file is too large. I have tried the parameter for "Image Format" of both 'Read Only' and 'DVD/CD Master' and neither of them work. My "Encryption" setting is 'None'.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI can't seem to get my mac to start up, it won't get past the gray screen with the apple logo and spinning wheel. I have tried to use utility disk to fix the problem but it kept coming up with error- could not complete. It would also not see the hard drive in OSX 10.4 when trying to archive before re- installing. So we opened it in OS 9 which worked and we could see the hard drive. We restarted the mac in OS 9 in the hope that we could re- install OSX 10.4 from there. It will go right through the installation but comes up with error again when validating.
View 1 Replies View RelatedThe last couple of days safari has been crashing pretty frequently for me. I've been using chrome no problem, but i do prefer safari, so I just googled it and got pointed to Repair Permissions in Disk Utility.
So I just opened Disk Utility, which I'm fairly sure I've never used before, and it's saying, under my HD "this drive has reported a fatal hardware error to Disk Utility. If the drive has not failed completely, back up as much data as you can and then replace it with a working drive."
It's saying it for both "FUJITSU MHZ2250BH FFS G1 Media" (I'm not even sure what that is) and "Macintosh HD".
There's nothing wrong with my computer? I've googled around and apparently this means my machines about to die?
I have a Lacie 1TB external drive. I'm trying to create another partition on it using Disk Utility so that I can use one of the partitions for Time Machine. When I go to add another partition, or even just resize the existing one, I get an error saying drive must be HPFS+ with Journaling enabled. It is. I've seen reference to this error in searches, but have not found a solution. Is there a fix for this, or another tool that I can use to re-partition my drive without wiping out existing partition? I have about 450GB worth of data on the drive that I might be able to store somewhere else temporarily, I would just prefer not to have to go through that....
View 1 Replies View RelatedI ran Disk Utility and before it finished I received Filesystem verify or repair failed error message. It says to run repair but I can't

I recently ran a ‘verify’ scan in Disk Utility as a precaution after Word crashed. An ‘incorrect number of file links’ error message showed up, as well as a prompt to repair this using Disk Utility from the Recovery HD. However, when I do a scan from the Recovery HD version of Disk Utility, no error messages or repair prompts appear.
My questions… Is this something to be concerned about? How can it be fixed? Would it be best to do a clean install of OSX? I only lost a little bit of data so I was pretty lucky.

Started G5, got a question mark. Rebooted from disk. Tried to repair. Told me it could not exit and complete repair to HD. Restarted again. This time everything in utility window red. Message is Fatal Hardware error to disk utility. Back-up if not completely failed and replace with new drive.
Not great at behind the scenes with my mac. Does this mean a shop visit. Any estimate on cost to me. Had lots of Macs. This is the first to crash and burn and its not that old.

After I erase the hard disk it shows 74.5gb free, almost. It says there is 42.3mb of space being used by 2 files which I understand are used for read write or partitioning or whatever.
When I then leave disk utility and go to the actual installer, the destination disk (untitled - 74.5gb) shows only 73.9gb free space. What is taking up an additional 500mb of space on the hard drive?
Apple support told me that somehow the disk has been altered and I lost space on the disk or I am now using a seperate partition that isn't showing up. Disk utility shows only one partition with 74.5gb free space. He told me I can find information about how to 'merge' the disk on the apple support section under troubleshooting articles for disk utility. I have been unable to locate this information.
I am trying to repair my disk so I can install bootcamp, but when I reboot my machine and run disk utility and choose repair disk, it hangs. Does anyone have any ideas ?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a 2TB Western Digital My Book Studio FW800 external that has 5 partitions, connected to my 2011 iMac. I had help doing the partitions and don't really remember the reasoning, but one is just for my SuperDuper! backup, one is Miscellaneous, one for movie clips off my camcorder, one for misc scanned photo's and one for my genealogy research. I back up using Time Machine to a Time Capsule and also to this WD hard drive with SuperDuper!
Recently I'm getting a pop up message that "Mac OS X can't repair the disk "Genealogy"'. And it needs to be reformatted. It's become a read only disk. When I look in Disk Utility it shows all the partitions as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" EXCEPT for the one in question. I also noticed that there are a lot of files with "date created" being the same date in 1969! These files may be letters I've written or photo's I added to that partition within the last few years.
I think I have to completely reformat the entire external hard drive to repair this, but I want to make sure. Because it's going to be a major hassle backing it all up to another external (having to get one first) and then figuring out how to make the files that have turned "read only" in that one partition, back to their original state! Does this sound right, that I have to reformat the entire external hard drive? And how do I get the read-only files back to their original state.

I get this question mark along with a folder when starting up. I tried holding down the option key when turning on the power and then I get an internet recovery along with a globe. I click on the arrow below it and it takes maybe 15 minutes to start up. Then i get this disk utilities screen. I'm now unable to do anything. When going into disk utility, disk 0 shows with Mac OS X base system underneath it. All the clickable buttons are faded out. Is there something wrong with the hardrive? and where could i get this fixed? There isn't a warranty on it.
