OS X :: Won't Find Battery Long Term Advice
Jul 19, 2009
I recently bought a 15 inch Macbook pro (yes, excited since it replaced my 7 year old Pentium 3 desktop), and I am wondering what the proper way is to allow my battery to last as long as possible in the LONG RUN (in terms of changing the battery and it losing its capacity). For much of the time, I have access to a/c outlet, so should I just leave the it plugged in as much as possible? Or should I only plug it in when the battery is used up and take it out when the battery is full again?

I have a MacBook and my strategy is to keep it plugged in as much as possible to avoid using charge cycles. If I use it down to 50%, then get home, I'll plug it in so I've only used half a cycle. Then when I'm just using it around the house, I try to keep it plugged in.
My friend has a completely different strategy. At the Apple Store, one of the salesmen told him that he should use it down to almost nothing and then charge it back up again. He would never plug it in at 50%, but wait until it is 10% or less. He gave me this analogy: if you have a bottle of milk in the refrigerator and you have a cow outside, you refill the bottle when it is empty. If you keep refilling the bottle when it is only half empty, that milk is going to go bad. He really doesn't understand how it works himself, but said something about the battery's memory? I never imagined that a battery would have its own little memory or something, but now that he mentioned it, it does seem reasonable.

I'm looking to upgrade from my current MBP to a higher performing one. I bought my current mid-2011 13" for basic use, word processing, internet, etc. I now work at an internet marketing and design agency though and it's not performing well enough for my needs.I run a fair number of programs (evernote, skype, ical, excel, word, itunes, firefox, and chrome with a bunch of tabs open at once) at the same time and my RAM (currently 4gb) is always maxed out right now. My current computer also won't handle photoshop, which I need to be able to use (not all day, everyday, but I do need to be able to use it). I'd like to be able to run Boot Camp or Parallels as well. I spent a few hours today researching and got it down to roughly 2 options. My main issue between the two is long term value, which one will work the longest/be worth the most in 3-4 years when I want to upgrade.
Option 1. Buy a 15" MBP 2.6ghz Retina with 16GM Ram upgrade. I know this is more than enough for my needs, I would mainly be buying this with the hope it would last a long time and so be worth it. My main problem with the Retina is the inability to upgrade so I feel like I have to make sure I get everything on the front end. (Cost $3k)
Option 2. Buy a standard 15" MBP knowing that I could upgrade to a SSD and add more RAM when I need it. My thinking is that RAM and SSDs are only going to get cheaper so why not just hold out for if/when I need it.
So which option do you think I should choose? If I go with option 2, is it worth it to upgrade to the 2.6ghz processor? I would get the 8gb RAM either way so it would effectively be a $300 upgrade.

purchased a macbook Unibody back in October 2008 when they were released and use it heavily. The battery no longer holds a nice long charge - I get about 2 to 2.5 hours out of a full charge.
The battery has 149 cycles on it, which is obviously high (and correct, I use the hell out of it). With it still being in warranty, is it worth pursuing a replacement battery? Will Apple tell me to go take a hike with the high cycle counts?

I've been offered a faulty Macbook (2ghz core 2 duo 120gig)I haven't seen it in the flesh yet, but the owner tells me it powers up on battery power, but will not charge one, nor run from the ac adapter. The owner bought a new battery and was able to run the Macbook while charge remained.I am a novice as far as Macs are concerned, but it sounds like a faulty ac adapter, or some issue with the mag port or internal electronics.Have any of you any advice on what this might be?I realise worst case senario it may need a logic board, so will be purchasing it with that in mind.

im just curious (and maybe a slight bit worried) about how long my macbook air should last on a full battery. it seems like it gets less and less all the time. its not my primarily used cmputer (i use my iMac mostly) but i still use my MBA most days whether it be in bed or on my travels to friends' houses etc.
when i do use it ive usually got a socket handy so its always charging and when its in the house not being used, its pretty much always on charge which means the battery running out isnt a big deal but the few times i actually don't have the MBA on charge it seems to run out pretty quickly. i do tend to run a lot of programs, however.

I had the white model from 2006 and it lasted around 3 hours.
My Aluminum MacBook lasts 4.5 to 5 hours, depending on if I watch video
It lasts 2.5 to 3 if I'm watching or editing video

I have a 15" MBP (2.66Ghz, late 2008), I usually don't have WiFi turned off, so I just wanted to know how long does it usually last with WiFi off and semi-high brightness setting for the display. The only activity is typing in Word and maybe a few non intensive Photoshop stuff.
I'd like to get an estimate because I have no power adapters where I'll be using it.

Mine only lasted 2hrs 30min on full charge (4th cycle. 4 day old), did the calibration and then it's now lasting about 4 hours. (it showed 7 hours in the beginning but number changed quickly as I opened Safari and browse online)
10 Hours? Come on Steve! Even with the dimmest light, bluetooth off, wireless off, no application running i've never seen 10 hours on MBP13". Not even 9 nor 8.
And I found this article.
"Macworld's 13"MBP Review: The 10-Hour Battery Lasts Four Hours"
(URL)
At least the author was playing Quicktime video...me? Nothing much and 4 hours. (Factory defect?)

What do you think about this battery from Batterygeek?
Specs:
130 Wh
16 or 19 volts output
1.7 lbs
This should give 4.5 times the normal operating time. Should be possible to watch demanding movies for about 7 hours, or do less demanding things for 18 hours.
I'm not sure if the voltage is too high or within limits. The Air magsafe seems to output 14.5 volts.

I have noticed that lately, my MBP Mid-2009 battery isn't lasting as long on a single charge as it used to. So, I downloaded and ran coconut Battery (attached results). After 152 Charges - I'm getting 90% battery capacity. Is there a way I can improve on that. Or, is this number about right for the age of the MacBook Pro?

I recently had to have my Macbook Unibody screen replaced. After they replaced the screen, they forgot to install the airport card. They had to take the computer back and replace the airport card. Now every time I turn on the airport card it literally takes like a minute to find any networks. That doesn't seem like a long time but next time you open your macbook see how long it takes to find networks. What should I do? Also when ever I click on the airport logo it says it is constantly scanning. Even when i am connected to a network.
