OS X :: Why Is Free Ram Bad Ram?
Oct 12, 2010
I have often heard that "free ram is bad ram" or "free ram is wasted ram", and this is particularly true in Mac OS X, and by extension iOS and Linux like OSs, yet it is not true of Windows (or is it?)
Why is it true of some OS's and not other OS's?

Anyone else see this on the US iTunes store? They've got a couple of tracks under the Free Music category, but they've got $0.99 BUY next to them.

Yesterday I apparently interrupted Disk Utility when it was erasing free space, which was far bigger than the used space on my beloved black Macbook. Apparently the free space, because the program was interrupted, is seen as one honking big file.
This morning, the disk utility tells me that I have zero free space. Verify says I do not need repair. I checked because of all my sudden problems (I am unable to save anything to the laptop, unable to cut-and-paste . . . and unable to erase free space again since there officially isn't any, etc.).
Trash is empty.
I tried (based on advice in another thread) to reboot with the installation disk so as to use its disk utility program, but the installation disk menu offers "install" etc. but not (as far as I can tell) just access to its disk utility.
I plugged in my Timemachine external drive [WD MyBook], but the most recent "save" there has the "restore" button greyed out. That's scary.
I'm willing to do a complete re-install if necessary, but I hope that one of you has a simpler solution that will simply get my free space back.

So what else can I do? Is there anything I should do to free up more RAM or something like that?
I did notice that when I'm offered the choice between HD and standard res... the standard res is watchable.... but still not perfect.

still new to mac and also just got Garrys Mod for Mac OSX>
The game really requires use to use SVN to sync files, and I just usually use Tortoise SVN for Windows, is there anything as good or better for Mac?
also, I own a GMOD server so I would need a FTP client, any good ones for Mac?

I'm not sure if this is going here or in the iPod Touch section, so I decided to just post it here.
I got an iPod Touch this Christmas, and when I was going to connect it to my computer, it said that the system was too old. I think you need to have Mac OS X version 10.4 (or 10.4.10) and I have version 10.3.9
I have searched everywhere, and gone through 20 pages in the iPod Touch section, but no one seemed/seems to have this problem.
And because I don't have version 10.4(.10), I can't use my iPod.. I can only turn it on and off.

My folks have recently cancelled our houses comcast internet bill in order to wait out the bad economy by making sure they have enough money. Ive been stealing my neighbors internet recently, but its not enough; and always crashes in 30min. of making use of it. I have a 20' ethernet cable, a comcast modem, and a netgear wireless router (not sure what model) before the bill got cancelled i was connect through the internet via airport. I have an iMac g5 9.0ghz /w 512MB RAM I currently have 10.x Leopard installed.
Is there any tips you guys have for me to connect? i only have 1 phone jack which is about 22' from where my computer is positioned in my bedroom. (Obviously thats not going to go too well because ill have cables running all over my house).
So what I was thinking, is that i could set up my cable modem and wireless router, put a phone jack cable from the jack to the modem, then turn on my router so i could get a wireless DSL signal to my computer and dial up for free without any cables in the way.

MacDaily says they've received a rumor that Mobileme may go free
I paid money for the Family Pack but i'm not above getting a refund
Having Mobileme for free changes a LOT. It means that rather than developers rolling their own OTA sync for forcing their customer to do Wifi sync for financial expediency they would have a proven sync platform in Mobileme to leverage.
This rumor is somewhat believable because Apple has that humungous NC datacenter being built. Mobileme is a value add to anyone with a iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad.
They could even give out basic features for free and then add in a bunch of stuff for the small monthly nominal charge. Sync should be free as well as "Find my ixxx" since these are such good selling features.

It has been wiped clean, back to OS 9, Power Mac AGP Graphics, firewire slot.
I want to give it to my bro for net use, itunes, word processing and basic stuff.
what would be the best way to go about upgrading? Should i do leopard or and older os X? will I need more ram (256) and i believe it is 500 mhz, would that be good?
like I said, it's just for basic stuff but I was wondering if these machines still work good.

Who agrees since they're not or probably will never update the mac mini again they should at least update it with the 'addons' (more like essentials) for free?
I hate how they nickel and dime you with the ram and hd (because they know most people will opt for the upgrades). It's pretty standard for that price now to have at least 2GB of memory!
Either way I'd like to get one not really for real use (with it's current specs) but more like a novelty item...

I have a huge external drive. I just deleted some things that I don't want anymore. But I still have a lot of stuff I want on the drive so I can't format it and move on. I have to keep a lot of files on there.
How can I erase and zero out the free space that is left when I deleted those files?

I think i got pretty luck here but you guys let me know. Bought a Rev A macbook air on craigslist for like 900 a few months back, machine came with apple care and a few extras.
Then the enter key was sticking up slightly more on one side so i figured i have the support might as well take it in. The key was sticking up from a pervious repair. So the took it and fixed it. when i got it back the keys didn't light up and the sound was gone. I called and when i bought it back they gave me a new Rev B macbook air with an extra power adapter. Needless to say i was very happy.
I have heard of this happening to other people is it starting to become common?

So today I was exploring my Mac Mini and made it so I can see how much space is left on my hard drive under the Macintosh HD icon. I saw that it says 111.47GB....11GB Free! Wow, I didn't know I used so much space. I don't really have enough money for a new hard drive. I am wondering if there is any freeware program to tell me where my hard drive space is going. What should I do to gain back some hard drive space?

I've read that 10.6 frees up space when it is installed. I'm currently on 10.4, PowerPC. Will 10.5 free up hard drive space if I install it? Or will it use about the same amount as 10.4? Also, is 10.5 now on sale because its "old"?
