I'm using an Intel iMac running OS 10.4.11. Obviously the computer is a few years old now and I'm wondering whether it is worth upgrading the system software or time to get a new computer. Can you guys venture any opinions as to which version of OS X I might be able to upgrade to with decent performance? I'd rather not add any memory if that's a requirement for upgrading - in that case I'd probably just opt for a new computer.

I had a IBook G4 and an external hard drive as its back up.IBook running something like Snow Lepord, anyway I have a Intel Macbook now with Lion, Ive been told here there is a possible confliction between the AMP external harddrive and lion.I will say a few times I have for limited time been able to access the drive on the newer MacBook, but then Lion (I think) drops it.

I have a iBook G4 that is currently running OS X Ver 10.3.2. It has an 800Mhz Power PC processor with 256MB of RAM.Does anyone know if I can upgrade from 10.3.2 to Tiger or Leopard?
View 24 Replies View RelatedI was wondering what is the max memory that I can put on my iBook G4. My G4 (12 inch) has 128 MB DDR SDRAM soldered in place and has a 800 MHz PowerPC G4 Processor. I was wondering what is the most memory I could install and what is recommended? Also I am only running Mac OS X Version 10.4.11. Is it possible for me to update to 10.5 or higher? Sometimes when running videos on google video or youtube it gets choppy and lags what fixes this problem. A message pops up about quicktime not up to date but I try and do a software update and it says that my software is up to date could this be because of the older software?

my work has recently switched from macs to p.cs anyhow they have recently posted some older macs and laptops in a free draw. my name came up against a 2002 white ibook g3, below are the specs as listed by my company:
iBook G3 215 10.2 iBOOK G3 700/128/27GB/Combo-GBR 14.1in TFT 2002
my question is how/can i upgrade the o.s to a higher level (currently at osx 10.2) & what is the realistic o.s i can get to whilst still working to a realistic level.?? would i need more ram/memory?? its in pretty good nick generally and would be a shame not to make the best out of it.
Can you add memory to an iBook G4. And can the new AirPort extreme card be installed in the same computer. It has an AirPort Extreme but I don't think its the newest one.
View 9 Replies View RelatedCan I upgrade my ibook 10.2.8 OS X to a higher version? If so how? If not, better to get a new computer? I was trying to install a broadband modem but requires OS of 10.3 or higher.
I'm not computer savvy but can understand enough to get by, as long as it's plain English. I want to be able to use my laptop to access the internet, anywhere & anytime.
I have g4 ibook 14" 1.33. I spent 2 hours unscrewing at least a hundred screws and trying to pry the white shell open. Finally I was able to locate the HD and replaced it with a new one. Screwed everything back in, crossed my fingers, and the thing booted up--hurray! Unfortunately, now the battery says 97% but it is not charging. The cord light is ever green and when I pulled the plug, it shuts down. So much for 97%. I tried all the pmu, reset-all, taking it in and out a dozen times (5-12seconds intervals), etc. Did I screw up something during the disassembly/reassembly?
View 4 Replies View RelatedIf anyone out there has ever seen "Tailspin" you know what i am talking about when i call my ibook, The Seaduck. it is already as souped up as I can afford to with 1.2gb of ram.in my system requirements I see it says Displays:Color LCDepth: 32-bit Color Is this the same thing as a video card?
I am trying to run CS3, and some things are extreemely jumpy. i am wondering if this is because of resolution or if I need a video card(CS3 requires a 16 bit video card), or maybe hard drive? (i have 30gb-9gb free).
i know the Seaduck can take a bigger hard drive, but i am not sure about video card. Also, i have the 12" model ibook, and htis makes me feel like I am trying to write my nome on a grain of rice when I work in flash so i am wondering if I can hook my computer up to a better monitor, if you have any recomendations, and what the implications of that would be.
I just took delivery of a clamshell ibook that I bought from ebay last week and have been wondering whether OSX would run well or not on it.
The specs are:
Indigo Firewire version
366mhz G3
193mb ram
10GB Hard drive
Airport fitted
Att the moment it is running OS9 very smoothly indeed, and I don't have enough cash at the moment to upgrade it in any way. I would leave OS9 on it, however I have never used the operating system before, so wondered whether it would be wise to upgrade it to panther, as I have a copy lying around. My concern is that installing panther would leave the machine feeling much slower, as I'd rather have a faster machine that can't do as much than a machine can do most things but takes ages to open up the finder.
I am here today looking for guidance with my ibook. I recently updated the software from 10.3 to 10.4. The wireless was working fine on 10.3. Then when I upgraded it it just stopped working. Now it says there is no airport card installed. I need to fix it because I need it for school!
View 2 Replies View RelatedI was planning to upgrade our family's computers to a new MBP 13 inch with a 320 HDD and a iMac 3.06 GHz base model.
I was going to do a the Apple financing of no interest for 18 months since the 13 inch MBP came out but after reading online that an iMac update may be out in the near future I am wondering if I should wait.
Would like advice on whether I should just buy the 2 computers now and not worry or should I wait for next iMac. We have five kids that are using the computers and iPhones/iPods and speed is what they want for web-based games. The iBook is fine for me doing Quicken, e-mail and normal stuff but is seizing up sometimes. Hard Drive space is biggest issue since iMac only has around 160 gig HDD.
Everything I have read I believe that these 2 computers will be fine. We hold computers for 5 years and so I am getting to end of life on the ones I have.
My wife has also been using a 2006 circa MacBook Pro 17 inch that I use for work and loves it. She thought the 13 inch MBP keyboard was smaller but I told her I believe they are the same.
I have 3 Macs within my family that I would like to upgrade to SL. Sounds like the Family Pack upgrade would be a great purchase.
However, if at some point, I want to reinstall SL on a SL-loaded machine, do I need to reinstall Leopard, to get Snow Leopard to recognize the upgrade?
Or will SL allow installations of SL directly?
I have an iBook (running OS X Tiger) which is wirelessly connected to a home network via a wireless router. On this network I have a Windows PC to which a HP Laserjet 1010 is connected via USB. I would like to be able to share this printer on the Windows PC so that I can print from the iBook.I have set file and print sharing options on the Windows PC. I have then added a new printer in OS X over 'Windows Printing'. OS X sees the printer and allows me to add it after puting in a username and password (I used the 'Guest' username). However when I try and print from the iBook the printer initialises and then procedes to print "%!PS-Adobe-3.0 %RBINumCopies: 1 %%..." and then lots of random letters. I thought that this looked like the iBook wasn't using the right drivers and after checking it appears it is using Generic Printer drivers.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a G3 iBook and just the other day the display stopped working. There were no signs of the display going bad, it's just went. Am I able to boot the iBook via Target Disk Mode on my PowerBook and run the iBook Hardware Test CD on it? Also, can I reboot my PowerBook and choose the iBook as the startup volume?
I know how to do Target Disk Mode but the latter I'm not sure about.
I am being annoyed, and I'm not sure if/how I can fix it. I have an external hard drive that is pretty much only accessed for backup purposes. However, often times I open a Finder window, or a Save dialog box, and everything is put on hold while the external drive spins up, despite the fact that it's not being used. Now sure, if I'm going to browse the external drive contents, it would need to spin up. But is there a way to keep it from spinning up except when it's being used directly?
