OS X :: Transferring Files That Were On A External NTFS Hard Drive To A Mac?

May 18, 2009

I'm new to Mac so I'm sure its user error.

I recently bought a Macbook and I have a external USB hard drive that is formatted NTFS. I copied all of the files off of external HD and pasted them on my Macbook. I slicked the external hard drive and formatted it as FAT32 so I could read & write on both a PC and Mac if I need.

Anyways, once the external hard drive was formatted I tried moving all of the files back to the external but I keep getting and error code once I paste the files on the external drive. It says: "Sorry, the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred. Error code 0"

Now I'm not sure if the files are locked or what but I need help. I want to move them back to the external drive. It actually copies a few files to the external but nowhere near what all I need. They are just some .doc files that are on there

If I reformat to HFS I will lose all my data on the existing drives... I basically want to be able to access and write to the Drobo as I did with Windows before, with the data intact.

OS X :: Data Recovery / Formatting Win NTFS Drive

Oct 21, 2009

i have a hard drive that began as a formatted win NTFS drive, which i formatted with hfs a couple of times to do some hackintosh experimenting. apparently i missed one of the document folders that were important to me when i did the backup to a bigger drive of the windows files. i am looking into data recovery software but i don't know much about it. the format has changed, and it has been formatted a couple of times. is it still possbile to use data recovery software and are there any recommendations? if anyone feels i have a better chance getting this answered in a different part of the forum, let me know.

OS X :: Transferring Data From PC To Mac

Aug 9, 2009

I have big (8gig) ISO files on my Macbook which I want to put on my PC running Win XP which does not have a connection. So networking is out of the question. I have an external HD, but it is formatted only to work with my PC. So using an external HD is out of the question. My Macbook has got into the habit of spitting out blank discs when I put them in - something I don't have the patience to get fixed at a shop right now. (I can't be without my laptop for any extended period). So burning a disc is out of the question. I tried turning my Mac into an HD by holding the T key on boot. But I cannot attach it to my PC via firewire because my PC does not recognise firewire (for some reason, though the port is there...). So...that's out of the question. I decided to try a USB transfer cable and went on a hunt for a USB cable which did not have USB on one end and a square plug on the other. I need one with USB on BOTH ends, that looks like a firewire but is a USB. It's awfully impossible to find such a thing in great number. I found one that was incompatible with Mac/XP transfers. I tried using a 16 gig USB drive but could only transfer 4gb chunks of data at a time. So what the hell am I to do now? How do I get this data off my mac and onto my PC?

PowerPC :: Transferring Data ?

Aug 10, 2006

I've got a couple questions. My brother is selling his iBook and upgrading to a Macbook.

1) Transferring his stuff. We don't have the Macbook yet, and the person buying needs it today. We do have some pretty beefy external hard drives. What's the best way to transfer all his preferences/files/apps to the external hard drive that'll also make it easy for the Macbook to import? Note that the external can fit the entire iBook hard drive no problem, if that makes a difference.

2) Wiping his info after - I assumed a clean reinstallation of OS X is the way to wipe all his info off and make the iBook ready to change hands. Is that the right way? Is there someone else we should do to make it ready to bid farewell to?

MacBook :: Transferring Data From One To Another?

May 18, 2012

I recently bought a second hand mac from ebay and it was pretty empty. There are some settings still from the previous user.

My old mac's backlight has died and the only way to use it is to link it up to my tv.

I have tried using the Migration assistant via WI-FI and ethernet cable and both haven't worked.

I'm considering taking the hard drive out of the mac and using it as an external hard drive. There are a couple of programs i've tried to download but dont work and i'd really like my firefox settings back!

I was also wondering if i was able to take the RAM from the old mac and install it in the new mac?

Applications :: Recover Data From Fat32 Drive / Photorec Unable To Navigate External NTFS

Dec 16, 2009

I am in need of a data recovery app that can recover data off a Fat32 drive and save the recovered data to a NTFS drive (I use NTFS-3G). I have PhotoRec but can't seem to navigate to my NTFS external to save the data (the only drive big enough to save the data too is my girlfriend's 500GB external and it is NTFS).

Any tips to getting photorec to navigate to the drive (I am pulling from one external to another). Photorec sees the one I want to save too I just can't get it to select it. Also if there are any other programs yall recommend, I will give them a shot.

1. Backing up before transferring data. Can I use one of those key things (don't know what they are called) that fit into usb port?
2. Once I've backed up, what is best way to connect the two computers for transferring files?
3. My understanding is that by using migration assistant, it will transfer all of those files necessary for a particular application...is this correct, and if so, will it then put those files where they should be?

OS X :: Unable To Right Click After Transferring Data From Usb?

Aug 5, 2009

About 10 minutes ago I was transferring some files from a USB stick when my Macbook just stopped responding to the click-pad. I can't right/double-click on anything! The cursor works fine and I can move it around but if I hit the clickpad, nothing happens... I can't get into anything, change anything...

I don't know what to do. I tried using the trackpad to click instead but all that does is give me a lasso tool and still can't click anything but it selects icons on my desktop. It also just selects the top bar automatically but I can't click on anything in the menu.

I thought it was my hardware but I plugged in a mouse and still nothing! I can left-click with the mouse but not right-click. I've tried rebooting and nothing changed.

It's like my right-click is constantly pressed down. But it's not physically.

Also, when I leave it alone it tries to go into the screensaver but constantly comes back out again, so it results in flashing between Flurry and my desktop.

OS X :: Transferring Time Machine Data To New MBP

Sep 9, 2009

I've just got a new MBP. I'm in the process of backing up my old laptop with time machine, so that I can transfer everything to the new computer with the migration assistant. I will have just enough space on my hard drive to do this. However the external HD is only 160 Gb and I would rather have a much bigger drive to use with time machine, and use this device to carry other files around. I don't want to lose the old backup data though. Is there any way to copy back up data onto a new time machine HD?

OS X :: Transferring Data And Applications From Old To New Machine

Jan 4, 2010

I've been using an old G4 iLamp model for years, and it's been wonderful. Today it wouldn't start up, and the repair guys told me that the power supply and logic board were shot. Doing the quick math, the cost of repair got me more than halfway to a much better machine, so I'll probably get a new iMac.

When I do, how do I get my information from the backup drive (LaCie using Quicksilver that backs up everything every night) onto the new machine? What about all of the software that is registered to the old machine serial #? Do I have to reregister it all? Is it as simple as plugging the backup drive up to the new machine and dragging and dropping literally everything on it onto the new hard drive?

OS X :: Transferring Data From Time Machine To Computer?

Jan 4, 2010

I have just purchased a new MacBook Pro. My understanding is that you cannot boot from Time Machine. If I were to have a major failure what would be the best way to transfer all my data on Time Machine to the computer? I have a bootable backup on an external HD which presents me with a way to boot up and to actually transfer everything since I last updated. This seems to defeat what Time Machine is for I would think. I know I can drag and drop all the data. What if I did not have a bootable backup what would I do?

OS X :: Error Messages When Transferring Data To Thumbdrive?

Jan 14, 2010

I have a new MacBookPro, 320HD, 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, with Snow Leopard. I have always put my thumb drive into a slot and transferred my data to the desktop so I can work on it. Only with my new computer does the following happen. After working on any files, I drag them back to the thumb drive. I keep getting the following message, "The Finder can't complete the operation because some data can't be read or written. (Error code -36). It will then create a new folder just like the one I'm transferring to the thumb drive, only without any files. I can then transfer single files to the new folder, but only if they aren't in a folder. So anything in a folder will not be transferred until a new folder is written on the thumb drive and then I have to transfer single files until everything has been moved over.
