OS X :: Transfer Data From One External To Another And Format The New One?

May 25, 2009

I bought a new external harddisk because my old wasn't enough. Anyway I transferred files from my computer and old external harddrive to my new one . BUT then mistakenly I deleted all the data on the new harddrive. I selected zero data option while I pressed Erase Data but then stopped it after 10 seconds. Unfortunally I can not see any data on my external harddrive. Can you suggest me a easy to use tool to recover my data?

Hardware :: Format External Hard Drive To FAT32 / Formatting Without Erasing Data?

Jan 19, 2008

I have an external hard drive that I was previously using on PC, having attempted to use it on a Mac, it will not write to it. I've found that I have to format to FAT32, which I think i can just about manage (yes, im a girl) but my concern is, if i format through the MAC, will i then lose what's on the hard disk as the tab says 'erase'? I have a lot of images on the hard disk so am a little petrified! Any advice for this really basic question would be appreciated!

OS X :: Transfer Data From Leopard Onto My WD 1TB External HD?

Feb 14, 2009

Just recently I decided to format my Western Digital 1TB external HD from FAT32 to NTFS, due to NTFS having capabilities to transfer single files bigger than 4GB. So before formatting it, I transferred all the data onto my MacBook Pro and then did the full NTFS format of the external HD.

Now the problem is I CANNOT transfer the data back onto my external hard drive because apparently Mac OS can only read the NTFS files and not write on there.

I do not wish to re-format my external HD back to FAT32, therefore I'd like to ask you guys whether something could be done about this? (Btw, I've seen some site like the NTFS-3G site but I'm not sure if that applies to me and how to use it anyway.) How could I transfer data back and forth from the NTFS external HD to Mac OS?

I had to get a new hard drive put into my macbook pro because it was failing. So, I moved all my data onto an external hard drive so I would not lose anything. But now I cannot get iphoto or imovie back onto my computer. It says I cannot open it because it is a time machine back up. I don't want to have to purchase iPhoto and iMovie again just because I had to replace my hard drive.

Power Mac G5 :: LaCie External Drive - Slow Data Transfer Rate

Nov 5, 2007

I have used the disk for a number of years - all appeared to work fine - I am now backing up my data and only get Very slow transfer speed using firewire 800 - 2 hrs to transfer 1.36 Gb. Disk is connected to a Dual 1.8 Ghz Power PC G5 with firewire 800 - another d2 disk is connected to it with firewire 400 and I have just connected a Maxtor disk using firewire 400 to that. I have tried Updated the firmware (it did require it), tested the device alone on both 800 and 400 connections both slow. Restarted everything and used disk repair to check and repair the disks - repaired permissions on the startup disk.

Connected all the devices together again | LaCie 800 - LaCie 400 - and Maxtor 400. It sends data to all the other devices fast (~ 3 min for 1.6 Gb) through the LaCie 800 disk connection!, but does not send data to the LaCie 800 fast at all. Tested the other devices alone as well - they are all fast. Have also performed a TechTool Pro Ver 4 test on the the disk (Disk type ST325082 3A 232.89 Gb LaCie d2 External LUN0 revision 3.03) Passed the surface scan, disk controller and read write tests. Is the disk failing?

OS X :: Format External Hard Drive In Apple Partition Map Format?

Nov 5, 2009

I'm running Snow Leopard on my new Macbook Pro. I've got a 1.5TB External hard drive that I'm trying to figure out how to format in HFS+ with Apple Partition Map. I can figure out how to format in HFS using Disk Utility, however it still does it in GUID format and I do not know how to do it in Apple Partition Map.

Googleing this for hours has lead with all kinds of information on how to go to GUID FROM Apple Partition Map but not the other way around. I know GUID is the new hottness.. but this drive will be used exclusively to connect to my XBOX 360 and it supposedly only reads HFS+ when its formatted with Apple Partition Map. (I have tried it with Mac OS Extended (Journaled) with GUID, and the XBOX does NOT recognize it) I do not want to use Fat 32, (I know that that is the other major option) beacuse it limits file size.

MacBook Pro :: Anyone Format External Drives In ExFAT Format?

Jan 9, 2011

I'm using Macbook Pro(2010, 10.6.6) and a PC with Windows 7. I need to transfer image files from both laptops to an external drive. I formatted the external drive in exFAT and wanted to know if there are any problems that might occur in the future. I already know there is an issue with such programs as Carbon Copy Cloner. I primarily need the drive for backup of the images and not system backups. Do you have any file corruption or other problems formatting in exFAT?

MacBook Pro :: Transfer Files To External HD -- Transfer Starts But Doesn't Complete

Feb 29, 2012

I have a 2011 Macbook Pro and an older (5 year old) Western Digital external hard drive. I have always used this hard drive for both mac and windows. Recently, however, whenever I go to transfer a file from the mac to the WD hard drive, the little transfer window pops up and it appears to initiate the transfer. However, it never fully starts it. It appears to "get stuck" in that initiating stage, showing zero of 3.16 gb transferred and shows an unknown transfer time. This happens no matter how long I leave it open. Again, I have used this external hard drive with my macs for the past 5 years without any problems until now. I haven't moved or modified the WD hard drive

OS X :: Data Transfer Old To New Mac

I plan on using Migration Assistant with firewire. SEEMS pretty straight forward. Need to transfer all applications and data. I still haven't entirely shaken my Windows past, so I am a bit nervous. Also, after the transfer is complete, what is the best/most secure way to wipe out the MB HD, reinstall OSX 10.5, and prepare for an ebay sale?

OS X :: Transfer Data From Old HDD?

Dec 5, 2009

Like many, very recently I took the plunge: 27" iMac / Quad Core / i7 / 1TB HDD / 8GB RAM and I couldn't be happier! What is the best solution for transferring data from an old hard drive (formally inside a PowerMac G5) to the brand new iMac? My first attempt was with the 'Akasa Integral HDD External Enclosure' however this doesn't appear compatible with the file structure of Tiger, let alone Snow Leopard. The PowerMac G5 tower itself has a failed power supply, so connecting from Mac to Mac isn't an option either.

OS X :: Data Transfer Between Laptops?

Jun 26, 2006

We have two Mac laptops: a PowerBook (running OS 10.5 Tiger) and an iBook (running OS 10.4). In a very unfortunate accident the screen literally broke off of the iBook. (A little kid flattened the screen out, and just broke it off). The computer itself seems to be OK, but nothing shows on the screen of course (cables twisted out, torn, etc.)

My main questions are: I had a few very important documents, that I need to get from that laptop as soon as possible. Is there any way to connect the two laptops and access the broken computer's hard-disk that way? If yes, how would I do that? The broken computer starts up, seems to be working fine otherwise. I do have a firewire cable, could I use that one? How do I make the connection, meaning software-setup?

Secondly, the iBook was just over a year old. Is it worth getting it fixed? The screen itself is not broken as far as I can tell, but it literally broke off of the main body, and some cables seem torn. Otherwise this laptop was in perfect shape before, rarely used.

OS X :: How To Transfer Data From G4 (10.4) To IMac (10.5)

Feb 12, 2009

There is no regular error message on the imac but I did get "there is no osx disc on your old computer, etc". Is there any way to do this without having to be smart enough to put every file in the right place on the imac? These machines are supposed to be smarter than I am right? Also, is there some reason I wouldn't be able to install os 10.5 that came with the imac on a macbook/2.0?

MacBook Pro :: Transfer Data On New HD

May 13, 2010

I have a 13" MBP and just got a new 500gb HD to pop in replacing my 160gb one. I have about 200gb free on an NTFS external I was planning on using time machine to back up my system for seamless HD swap but as we know, macs don't play nice with NTFS. If possible, I would like to not have to re-install all my applications and such. I found other software (SuperDuper) that should do the same thing but none will play with my NTFS external. I guess my question is this: I have a SATA to USB adapter, can I: Plug in new HD via USB, Format to OSX Journaled, then do a time-machine backup to the new drive, pop in the new HD and be good to go?
