OS X Technologies :: Automator Perpetually Running On Second Action?
Feb 8, 2012
I had been using automator quite successfully until recently now I'm unable to get automator to step through even the most basic setup. It refuses to step through to the second action and perpetually runs without producing any results as the image below shows.for any of my automator setups I get results for the first step and then an indefinate hang on the second leaving the step icon greyed out. I have tried this with numerous other actions like calendars etc but to no avail. Below are the very basic automator steps I'm using in this example.Â

whenever I try the "Speak Text" action to speak out some text I receive the Automator error message: "Another application is already speaking" and no words are spoken. At the same time I can run a "run shell script" action with a "say some words" which is executed as expected.Any idea what's blocking my Speak Text action?

I tried to pass a text (containing a URL) to "Display Web Pages" action. It gets the text but adds %0D at the end of the text, so of course the "Not Found" error comes up in Safari. For example: [URL] Then after passing it to the "Display Web Pages" action, it becomes [URL] Is there a workaround for this?

So I know that bundled with the newer Microsoft Office 2007/2008 is a set of actions that get added into Automator. Among these is a "convert DOCX to DOC" action. Does anyone know - is it at all possible to get just this automator action without installing the whole of MC Office 2008?

I created a folder action in Automator and can't find it to edit it or delete it. I've looked everywhere I could think of and ran a spotlight search but I can't find the .workflow document. All I want to do is delete the workflow.Â

Does any one know of a bug or a log for folder scripts that do not run? I am trying to get a basic folder script (to replace %20 in the file name) of the Downloads folder.
When downloading multiple files (two or more) it runs only on the first file, successfully without error, and then never runs on the second file. If I move both of the files out of the Downloads folder and move it back it, the one file that does not get the folder action now does and everything is peachy. So it is not that the folder action is not scripted properly. It is just that the folder does not catch the second file download - guess maybe too fast? Has any one seen this or have this bug?

I am running OS 10.6.8, using Automator to create a Folder Action. The input is a single folder containing 2 or more PDF files. I drop this folder onto the folder with the action attached. All of the PDFs are combined and the resulting PDF is copied to a new location.Â
It works very well with one problem. The name of the combined PDF is an automatically generated system name. I would like this PDF file name to change to the name of the original folder that contained the original PDFs.Â
To summarize: "Folder A" has the action attached. "Folder B" contains 2 or more PDFs. I drop Folder B onto Folder A. Automator creates a new combined PDF. I would like this to be named "Folder B.pdf"Â

I want to create a Folder Action to run the following shell script on all files with extension .vcs:Â
sed '1d' >reminder.icsÂ
The job of the Folder Action is to take any Calendar item files downloaded from TVGuide.co.uk, remove the first line and then save them as .ics files. The reason for this is that the files are automatically generated with a carriage return on the first line, which BusyCal (being strict about these things) doesn't like. It then rejects the whole file.Â
I have tried doing this with Automator but the result didn't work.Â
If it's possible to have the Folder Action retain the original file name (ie. everything pre-extension) that'd be a bonus.Â

Please accept my apologies if I'm posting in the wrong section . I've been using the fantastic Create Booklet PDF Service (workflow) by Christoph Vogelbusch (his page is on .mac, so it just went bye-bye). I'd like to turn this worklfow into a folder action so that when a file is added to the folder, a pdf booklet is created automatically. In particular, I'm interested in doing this in Microsoft Word. Can anyone tell me if this is even possible, and if so, either point me in the right direction (or, at least, to the best Automator community where I might repost this request)?

I'm trying to create an Automator service for the Finder in Lion. It gives me an "error in shell script". I just created a similar script that uses "imguru" to upload images to [URL] which works great, so i'm thinking that it's must be the line with "unzip" that creates a problem.Â

I have been using Automator to import hundreds of text files into one excel workbook using the "Import Text files to Excel Workbook" action. Automator works great for all files that are tab delimited. However I have another set of data that are output with a varying amount of spaces between each column. I cannot change the way they are output.
Automator gives me the option of choosing "space" as a delimiter, but it wont give me the option to "Treat consecutive delimiters as one" that Import within excel does. I also tried to record my actions within excel many times but it didn't work even with just one file. So what I need is a way to get these text files into one excel workbook as separate worksheets with the data separated correctly into columns.

i have an Automator "application" that i made with the help of people on this very board that worked flawlessly on Snow Leopard and previous OSs but doesn't work in Lion anymore.i was hoping if someone could look at the file (link below) and either tell me what needs to be changed, or go right in and change it for me! (i don't really have much experience with scripting). i have a txt file with a list of filenames. the script references this list, goes to the folder that contains these files (but the folder also has other files in it too) and copies the referenced files into a new folder. url...

I'm updating an Automator workflow for OS X Lion that I initally developed and used, without issue, in OS X Tiger. The workflow asks for a name, creates a folder for the name, takes a digital image with a Nikon D50 connected to the computer, and saves the image to the new folder. This aspect of the workflow works fine.Â
I then have a prompt asking if we should take another. If the user says "yes," the script should take another image and save it to the folder. This is where I run into an issue. When I attempt to add another "Take a Picture Action" into the workflow, I get the cryptic (at least to me) error message in the attached screenshot. Â Â
Here's the text:Â
"Cannot update for observer <AMWorkflow 0x400458ac0> for the key path "parameters.name" from <TakePicture 0x403e3b0a0>, most likely because the value for the key "parameters" has changed without an appropriate KVO notification being sent. Check the KVO-compliance of the TakePicture class."Â
The language of this error would seem to indicate a bug.

I wrote a very simple service via automator that allowed me to compose a new mail msg in any application using a keyboard shortcut. It used to work amazingly fast, but with time it seems to take quite a bit of time to get that new mail window to come up after using the keystroke. I am thinking this is similar to what happens to my Dictionary app...about every 2 weeks on average, loading dictionary takes a LOOOng time (via typing in a word in spotlight). So every 2 weeks or so I delete the plist file and it is good as new. Is there something like this I can do here? Also - either this seems to be a common theme with teh Mac OS (apps/etc slowing down with time), or I am doing something wrong. Which is it?

I'm thinking, specifically, my address. It would be great if there was a shortcut that would let me paste in my full address whenever I need to drop it into an email. I'd assume there must be some kind of way to do it, but I've been searching and can't find anything. Could anyone hit me with a tip?

A few months ago my 2004 iMac froze as I was simply shutting down the power and attempting to restart. I was not installing any new O/S.Today I attempted two things while booting with the O/S recovery disc-1: (a) I slid the disc in and held down the "C" key while I attempted to power it on. Nothing happened and I continued to see the grey screen and spinning wheel.Â
(b) I slid the disc inside and held down the "ALT" key while I attempted to power it on. Three icons showed up: (a) Hard Disk; (b) Recovery Disc; and (c) Test. I clicked on the Test icon and it took me to a new screen with two options: ( i ) Quick Test and ( ii ) Extended Test. I clicked on Quick Test. The first aspect of the Quick Test (I think it was Airport) went through fine and passed. The second aspect of the Quick Test (Logic Board testing) continued to show "In Progress" for a really long time (about 15 mins.). From that I figured something must have gone wrong with the Logic Board.

I am trying to write a generic script that will mount a disk upon log in of a user So far I have this: (which works for a specific user:)Â
try
mount volume "smb://MyUserName:MyPassWords@ServerIAmPointingTo"
end try Â
I have pointed the script to my log in prefernces so it runs automatically when I log in. Is there a way to do this with a generic username/password? If I wanted to give this script to 100 of my co-workers, they would all have to modify the code to their credeintals. But is there any defaut usernames or passwords that AppleScript will take?  Maybe something like: mount volume "smb://default:default@ServerIAmPointingTo" ...? My goal for this script is to have it run on peoples desktops at work to point to the same server, since I work in IT. But, I don't want to modify each script for each unique person.Â

Does anyone have some experience running multiple folder actions at the same time? I've written a Applescript folder action that processes some files. When adding some files, the script starts and all goes well. The processing of each file takes a few minutes, but all files are processed correctly. However, when adding some new files to the dropfolder, while the folder action is all ready processing other files dropped a few minutes earlier, the process that is all ready running immediately aborts and the folder action is relaunched on the new files, leaving the old files for what they are.The same problem occurs with multiple folders, each having a folder action attached. When dropping files in "Folder A", the script starts processing. But if someone droppes files in "Folder B", The script of folder A aborts, and the script of folder B starts processing. When adding more files to the folders, the result is the same. In some casses, when the last dropped files are processed, the os continues where the operation was aborted on the previous files. But this not always happens. To make things worse, when you remove the items from the folders afterwords, the folder actions starts running again on items no longer present in the folder ..Does anyone know how I can prevent the folder action being aborted when new files are dropped and placing the new files in "Hold", until the previous files are processed? How can I prevent a folder action being aborted when a item is dropped into another folder? I've written a small script to test this behaviour. Just create one or more folders and attach the script below. Drop a item into the folder, wait a few seconds and drop another one in the same or another folder. To monitor what happens please check the console. [code]

Trying to run the following command as a Launch Agent (OS X 10.7): /usr/bin/find /Users/username/Documents/Dropbox/Public -type f -mtime +2 -print0 | xargs -0 rm -rÂ
Created a plist file (reproduced below) and saved to ~/Library/Launch Agents, but the command isn't executed either at the specified time or when the agent is loaded via launchctl. If I change the command to a simple Applescript test: osascript -e 'tell Application "Finder" to display dialog "hello"'Â
It runs correctly as a launch agent when loaded and as the specified time Which means there's something wrong with the first command (find). But the command runs as written when executed manually in the terminal. Â

I cannot get Folder Actions Script working on Leopard 10.5.8.
I have put a simple script in ~/Library/Scripts/Folder Action Scripts/ and attached it to a folder on the Desktop, but no way to make it act.
I suspect it may be a permission issue, but I do not know how to repair it. I tried repairing permissions with Disk Utility and with Onyx, but no success.
