With the introduction of Outlook 2011 for Mac, many Mac users are asking the burning question around how to sync Outlook 2011 for Mac with the native Mac Address Book. This is especially relevant as many users now sync their mobile phone contacts (Blackberry, Android, iPhone) with the native Address Book contacts manager. For example, RIM�s Desktop Manager for Mac syncs with iCal and the Address Book and relies on Sync Services to sync with Outlook 2011 contacts. If you will now be managing your contacts inside Outlook, you will need a way to sync these contacts back to the native Address Book.
This is also true if you are using Scrubly to clean up your Address Book contacts. You will need to turn on Sync Services inside Outlook to sync your newly cleaned up contacts from Address Book to Outlook Contacts. Follow the steps below.
Before we begin, you should note that Outlook 2011 will sync contacts from Address Book, and you can sync e-mail accounts with Mail. However, Outlook 2011 won�t sync events or tasks from iCal (in part because Microsoft�s primary design goal with Outlook was to make it work with Exchange). Outlook 2011 also does not support CalDAV.
Setting up Sync Services for Mac:
1. Before turning on Sync Services inside Outlook 2011, be sure to turn off all other 3rd party sync services you may be running in the background. Once Outlook 2011 has completed its initial sync with Address Book, you may turn these services back on again.
2. As a precaution, make a backup of your Address Book contacts. File > Export > Address Book Archive. It�s important to make a backup of your data after you clean it up and before you sync. This way if there are problems you can erase and import the clean backup file.
3. In Outlook 2011, open Outlook Preferences by clicking Outlook > Preferences
4. Click Sync Services and select Turn on Sync Services for Contacts. Outlook 2011 does not yet support sync for iCal.
5. Select the accounts you would like to sync, (i.e. Address Book or MobileMe). Note that Outlook 2011 does not support MobileMe calendar or tasks sync at this time.
Troubleshooting Sync Services for Mac:
The above steps are really quite easy, however, many users have complained that syncing does not occur after following these steps. Here�s a few troubleshooting tips you can follow in the event this happens to you.
Important: Be sure to back up your Address Book and Outlook Contacts before testing any of these Troubleshooting steps.
Turn on iSync
1. Launch iSync, located in the Applications > Utilities folder
2. Open preferences window in iSync Application Menu
3. Check �Enable syncing on this computer�. Sometimes this option seems to be disabled or you can�t check or uncheck this option after starting iSync. In this case, wait for iSync to complete the sync process and then the option will be available again.
4. Reset Sync History. Important: If you are using the new MobileMe Calendar, resetting sync data is not an appropriate troubleshooting step to solve calendar sync issues. Instead, please see Troubleshooting new MobileMe Calendar issues. If you�re not sure how to tell if you�re using the old or new MobileMe Calendar, see this article.
Delete Plist Files
1. Force quit all applications currently running.
2. Go > Home > Library > Preferences
3. Search for all files containing �com.microsoft.outlook.XXXXX.plist� drag these files to the Trash
4. Search for the file �com.microsoft.SyncServicesAgent.plist� and drag this file to the Trash
5. Start Outlook
6. Tools > Sync Services and confirm that �Turn on Sync Services for Contacts� is checked on
Close and Re-Start Sync Services Agent
1. Force Quit Outlook
2. Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor
3. Look for the Sync Services Agent under Process Name
4. Highlight this process and click Quit in the upper left
5. Close Activity Monitor
6. Re-Start Outlook

Outlook is full of contacts and calendar entries and I would expect to see all of these within Calendar and Contacts on OS X (I haven't even had a prompt to merge with Calendar and Contacts)Â I'm trying to get this work so that I connect a Blackberry and sync using the Blackberry Desktop Manager.Â

Jun 25, 2012In the past, if I didn't move forward when Apple moved forward, all that happened was that I did not have access to new features.This time, with the demise of MobileMe and the introduction of iCloud, if I don't move forward I lose features, but even worse, even if I do move forward, I still lose features. In particular, the lack of syncronization under iCloud of Mail's Rules, Accounts, and Smart Mailboxes means that on our several machines I have to manually do updates multiple times, which of course leads to multiple mistakes. In my view, what Apple has done has the look and feel of customer abuse, something usually attributed to another large tech company. I can't avoid losing functionality, whether or not I move forward with Apple.Â

Sep 12, 2010I know it's under System/Library, but it's not there! I let my brother change some of my icons on my MBP, although he said he didn't change the Finder or Trash Can icons. Is there another way I could access the folder because now I'm just curious about where the heck it is!
Edit: NM, I found it by going through the hard drive file instead of actually using Finder...if that makes sense.

Dec 16, 2009I've been fooling around with Automator for a few hours trying to look for little ways it can handle my repetitive stuff. I've figured out some pretty neat tricks, but I also have a slew of unwanted folder actions and services in my context menus and for the life of my I can't figure out how to get rid of them. The folder actions are especially problematic since they mess with my files automatically. Googling it isn't turning up anything nor can I seem to find anything in Apple's help documents. Is this some kind of huge joke being played on me here or something? Has no one ever wanted to disable their automator tasks before or something?

Aug 31, 2008I have my iTunes music on an external drive. I set the location of the iTunes Music Folder to the location on the external drive in Preferences. But next time I open iTunes, it's reset back to the location on the built-in HD where iTunes places the folder by default. External HD is sometimes disconnected (though not when I'm resetting it). Maybe if iTunes can't find the drive it reverts back? Powerbook G4, OSX 10.4.11, iTunes 7.7.1.

Mar 25, 2009iTunes 8.1 just keeps bugging out on me. I set my iTunes Music Folder Location to a folder on my Time Capsule, but when i exit out and relaunch iTunes, the folder location is reset back to the default iTunes Music folder on my system drive! Why does this keep happening? Anyone else having this problem? I don't want to have to point my location back to the Time Capsule each time I load up iTunes.
A thing to note is however, is that my library file (and other misc itunes files) still remains in the iTunes folder on the system drive. Would that have anything to do with this?

Mar 7, 2012Does any one know of a bug or a log for folder scripts that do not run? I am trying to get a basic folder script (to replace %20 in the file name) of the Downloads folder.
When downloading multiple files (two or more) it runs only on the first file, successfully without error, and then never runs on the second file. If I move both of the files out of the Downloads folder and move it back it, the one file that does not get the folder action now does and everything is peachy.So it is not that the folder action is not scripted properly. It is just that the folder does not catch the second file download - guess maybe too fast? Has any one seen this or have this bug?

May 10, 2012Our environment has multiple Windows file servers, both 2003 and 2008. If one of these SMB shares is accessed from a Mac and the user creates a folder, will the ACLs on the share that are set to cascade actually cascade to this newly created folder? We've had issues in the past where ACLs that are supposedly set to cascade on a shared folder are not present on sub-folders created from Macs.Next question: if the share resides on a netapp device, do the same rules apply? The Macs are still connecting to these shared folders using the SMB protocol. All Macs are bound to our 2008 AD domain and use network accounts with local homefolders. The issue seems to happen when one or both of the following things happen:
1. A Mac user copies/creates a folder on a Netapp share and for some reason it doesn't inherit rights correctly
2. We move the folder from one share on an actual Windows server to the Netapp and it doesn't take permissions correctly.

I've also tried to open the server in finder and run the rsync without ssh. Mar 30, 2012I am running OS 10.6.8, using Automator to create a Folder Action. The input is a single folder containing 2 or more PDF files. I drop this folder onto the folder with the action attached. All of the PDFs are combined and the resulting PDF is copied to a new location.Â
It works very well with one problem. The name of the combined PDF is an automatically generated system name. I would like this PDF file name to change to the name of the original folder that contained the original PDFs.Â
To summarize: "Folder A" has the action attached. "Folder B" contains 2 or more PDFs. I drop Folder B onto Folder A. Automator creates a new combined PDF. I would like this to be named "Folder B.pdf"Â

May 29, 2012I have a folder action set up to open movie files in a conversion app but every time I add a new file it loads all the files in the folder. How can i exclude a file that has already been opened by the folder action. I can't move the file due to queing up moves for conversion if the file is moved after it is opened the the program doesn't know where to look for it. Ive tried Filter finder items by last opened and set it as today but that did not work. It opened nothing. May I could set it up to know if the file has been there longer then 5 min that the folder action should not open it.Â

The job of the Folder Action is to take any Calendar item files downloaded from TVGuide.co.uk, remove the first line and then save them as .ics files. The reason for this is that the files are automatically generated with a carriage return on the first line, which BusyCal (being strict about these things) doesn't like. It then rejects the whole file.Â
I have tried doing this with Automator but the result didn't work.Â
If it's possible to have the Folder Action retain the original file name (ie. everything pre-extension) that'd be a bonus.Â

My goal is to have these files renamed after their parent folders, all the way up to the Project Name and then have them moved to a set folder, out of this dull dictatorship I've created, so my files would end up with a name like this:Â ProjectName - Info - Setups - fixed name fileÂ
