My MacBook Pro freezes when attempting to access System Preferences. I am able to Force Quit but that's it. Screen went black for about 30 seconds earlier tonight. Never had a problem before a previous update.

Why does system preferences app freezes on launch?

I am having some trouble with my MBP early 2011. It's currently running 10.7.3. I have been trying to open system preferences to modify some things, but it freezes whenever I enable editing. System Preferences has been crashing at any point that I have to enter an Admin password. I noticed that this just started happening recently, and I would really not like to reinstall Lion, as my internet will take it 3-4 days to download.
I noticed that this problem arose after I tried to remove MySQL Community Server for Mac, and I removed the App, and all of the pertaining folders/files with Terminal. It could also be a virus, but I am almost positive it is something to do with MySQL. Any way that I can somehow stop System Preferences from freezing. I have already used multiple anti-virus programs to try to get rid of malicious files, and I have tried to repair system permissions numerous times.

I have two identities on my MacBook Air. In the main identity, System Preferences is frozen so I can't access it to make any changes. I want to migrate my files to the other identity and delete the original one, as everything works fine in the second identity.

THREE REPAIRS IN LESS THAN 3 MONTHS> so i was downloading a game for my psp when i went to go get a bagel in the kitchen. i left for no less than a minute and when i came back the screen was black. i thought it just dimmed itself but no. i moved the trackpad clicked on all buttons click the mouse button everything. i noticed the light wasnt throbbing so im sure it wasnt sleeping. the light was just pure white(the sleep light) so i waited like 3 minutes than shut it down. do u know whats happening. i know now i will be getting it replaced but until then im trying to keep it working well enough that i can watch a ********** vid on youtube.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently took the plunge and installed Lion after being content with Snow Leopard....well now I have quite a few issues. When I open system preferences for some reason it automatically opens to Network...why I'm not sure. When I click show all, then click sharing, I can't make any changes in the Sharing preferences without my entire system locking up. I can't force quit or anything. I can still use the mouse but all I have is the rainbow wheel!
I have searched and searched and haven't been able to fix it. I have tried booting into the Guest account and the same problem happens there. I have trashed all the plist files everyone says to try. I have tried repairing permissions etc. I feel like I have tried everything. Is there anything else that I can do without have to do a clean re-install. I'm hearing if I do this that I won't be able to migrate my files from by backups due to permission problems?
I also took a look at my system log and it is full of this!

whenever i try to remove something like growl or hyperdock from the other section of the system preferences pane, system preferences freezes. it has done this since whenever i first installed snow leopard on my computer. is this a snow leopard bug that apple has never fixed or should i try a system restore from the 10.6 disks.
View 14 Replies View RelatedBeen a rough two weeks. I had the issue of my iMac not loading passed the grey screen. No keystrokes were working so I had to bring it in to get repaired. I was told some optic something cable had to be replaced.
Well, initially that didn't work but it just ended up taking forever too boot. 20 or 30 minutes. Now it is loading fine and Windows is also loading fine with bootcamp.
However, I can't get in to turn on my USB wireless adaptor for Sprint. I can open the system preferences and I can also go in to any other option without problems, but if I click "Network" it says Loading Network, then hangs up. I need to force quit and retry. Same results. Anyone know how to repair that? I have tried Disk Utility and it says no problems. Diskwarrior doesn't let me do much since I am booted to that drive.
Can't open system preferences. Says it may be damaged or incomplete.

Every time I select the icon, the dot appears beneath it, but then it "unexpectedly closes". In addition, whenever I shut down my computer, it resets all of the user preferences I had prior to shutting it down, for instance, wallpaper, dock layout, default browser, etc etc.

Suddenly, the system preferences on my MacBook will not open.
The error box said "the application system preferences can't be opened" and also had the number 1712 in it...

I am unable to put my G5 Power Mac to Sleep. I have attempted to make adjustments through Energy Saver but any changes freezes System Preferences. The spinning wheel begins and I need to Force Quit System Preferences.

when i try to get it to open it just says that System Preferences quit unexpectdedly and to reopen it but when i do the same sign pops up and repeats it over and over again
Info:MacBook Air
The computer is a dual G4 1Ghz with 2Gb of Ram and two hard drives. Used to run a custom built microscope in a scientific lab. Resurrecting it is imperative, as the cards and other equipment are now out of date and replacing the computer and cards would be enormously expensive (and worse, would mean switching to PC).
There are several issues:
-No response to selecting "About this mac" from the apple logo in the upper left.
-No response to selecting restart or shutdown
-The computer freezes up (pinwheel) whenever I attempt to access System Preferences (window will appear however once mouse is over it, pinwheel appears).
-does not recognize the USB key needed to run a piece of software.
-together these issues prevent us from installing the software needed to control the scope.
I've tried reinstalling (clean not archive) the OS on the original HD and a new HD. The problem doesn't go away.Have also cleared out the systempreferences.plist and the cache for both safari and preference panes.
When I open system preferences, it locks up and I get the spinning icon. I am unable to access anything. I am using OS Lion.

I have a macbook a little over a year old. It's my first mac and I love it. Yesterday though it started acting really weird. I first noticed that it was really, really hot and the fan was running. I turned it off and back on and here's what I found out:
Applications are being deleted from macbook. ITunes, IPhoto, iChat have clear question marks over icon. There are 8-10 blank spaces in the Applications folder where applications have been deleted. However, data is still there (ex. pictures still there, but no iPhoto).
Internet= Says I have internet but wont connect.
Cannot open " System Preferences" or "Internet Preferences".
If connected to home computer will connect to internet and allowed to open internet preferences but still no system preferences.
If shut down....takes a while to come back on and starts up 2-3 times.
Also "Preview" is gone. Now " ColorSync Utility" opens.
Is this my hard drive dying? I'm tech challenged, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
I'm new to Macs and everytime I click on a link from gmail my system preferences box pops up and I cannot get to the website without pasting link into Safari. What do I do to change this?

I'm trying to do some work in the system prefs, and the app. just won't open. Sometimes it just bounces in the dock bar, and other times it does nothing.
View 11 Replies View RelatedIs there a way to open System Preferences automatically when a monitor is plugged in and plugged out of the notebook?
It sounds weird, but is important.
I just upgraded to Snow Leopard and everything seems to be working fine (and fast ) except for System Preferences. Whenever I double click the icon on my desktop, it says I need to upgrade System Preferences and that I am currently using version 5.2. So how do I upgrade System Preferences? Never mind, I figured it out. The 6.0 version of SP was in the Applications folder, while it kept the 5.2 version on my desktop.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm running Mac OS 10.4.11 on an iBook and for some reason, when I select Accounts in the System Preferences, I get nothing but a blank screen. I can't manage the accounts since I can't see the accounts to manage or any of the settings. I threw away the cache and restarted System preferences to see if that would help. It says "Loading Accounts..." but it never loads the that system preference. If I click it again, it comes up blank again and the cache is regenerated. This machine was purchased used and I don't have the OS disks to relaod the system.

View 24 Replies View RelatedI know how in keyboard preferences to mark the check box that says "Use function keys as standard function keys," but my question is, is there a way to use a hot key to make this swap instead of having to open up system preferences, navigate to the proper pane and tab, and click the box? I have a couple programs where I absolutely need function keys to be function keys, but for general purpose use, I need the function keys to be the spiffy stuff printed on them.
Ideally I'd love for the system to look at what app was in the foreground (that is, has control of the menu bar) and recognize this app as needing access to function-function keys and make the swap for me, but I don't think this is possible at the moment, and having a hot key to change it would be the next best thing.
system preferences wont open anymore, says that i cant open it because it may be damaged or incomplete.
