Nov 9, 2007Below is a message from BRU Technology about Mac OS 10.4.10 is not compatible with tape devices connected to Mac OS X 10.4.10 via SCSI, FireWire, USB, SAS, or Fibre-Channel.
Is anyone having issues with thier setups ?

Dec 9, 2006I suffer from extensive paranoia of data loss and in addition to the HDD-based backups I do now, I've been looking to back up the Pro using tape. There are Mac incompatibilities in connecting to my SAN infrastructure, but as an alternative I have a Sony AITe200-UL Firewire AIT drive which I use on some of my Windows desktops which don't connect to my main network.
The backups would in all likelihood be attended (i.e. I'd be sitting near the machine for the duration of the backup) and will most likely not exceed the uncompressed capacity of the tape drive (80Gb) as it'll be documents only, not media (which is centralised and already backed up properly). A decent verify is a must but apart from that, I don't need a backup software jangling with features. I would like quick, fussless install of the backup software so that it's a good second-string backup to a bootable HDD image in case that doesn't work for any reason.
My automatic choice would have been Retrospect Desktop because I've worked with it - I use Retrospect on some of my PC's already. But is there a better option on the Mac?
IMac :: SCSI Tape Drives And Retrospect / Other Backup Solutions
May 26, 2010So my sister's girlfriend is a professional photographer. Her former consultant get her an SCSI 68-pin connected Sony StorMaster tape drive that backs up her 3 big NAS drives with all her work via EMC Retrospect. This was on a PowerMac G5 tower with an SCSI 68-pin card installed. She's moving and has tasked me with getting it all up and running again at her new place since she's fallen out with the old consultant (who did some weird, weird stuff with their network - why are there 3 switches for the NAS? Why does the Airport run through two of them? WTF?) and got an iMac 27" i7.
Now, problem is, obviously that her i7 has no way of plugging into that SCSI tape drive. She's been using her G5 purely to run Retrospect which is a waste of space and energy. Plus she's moving to a much smaller space, so I really, really want to get it out of there. So here's the thing - I CANNOT find a 68-pin SCSI to USB adapter other than one by Ratoc, which apparently only lets the tape drive function in "mass storage mode" which doesn't really tell me if it will work with Retrospect or not. Is there another solution to keep the current tape drive and plug it into the iMac?
MacBook Pro :: Tape Securing Fan To Heatsink / Electrical Tape?
Jul 4, 2010I have a MacBook Pro 15" - Model A1226 (Santa Rosa, circa 2007). I need to replace my right fan. AppleCare just expired (of course). But replacing the fan should be pretty easy, I think.
The only question is about the tape securing the fan to the heatsink. On the old fan it looks like electrical tape, but on the "sticky" side, it looks like there is a bit of copper (?) in the middle.
So my assumption is that regular old electrical tape is not appropriate, but some special kind of electrical tape. What type of tape is that?

Jul 2, 2012My system is MacPro 2009 with 10.6.8 server and Apple RAID card. Last week, RAID util just notified me of one drive is not viable, so i decided to replace the drive today. The configuration of my system is... There is an Apple Raid Card for HW Raid system Bay 1 = 640 TB drive with Mac OS X 10.6.8 server installed Bay 2, 3, 4 = 1.5 TB drives set up as RAID 5 below is what I did to replace the degraded Bay 4...
1. I shut down the system
2. replaced the corrupted drive with the new hard drive
3. tried start the machine again.Now my machine refuses to start up with the blinking question mark... I guess that the system fails to recognize the new drive or cannot find the system files...
4. So I put back the degraded drive...
5. The machine still won't start...
6. I tried to use the 10.6 server installation disk to boot up the machine to check if I can fix the system via disk util; but, everytime I do this, I got kernel panic...
7. resetting PR Ram didn't help, cannot boot up via safe mode as well (since the system file is not accessible now, I guess...).
8. booting via 10.6.2 server installation DVD still gives me kernel panic...
Why would my system corrupt by just replacing one degrade drive? The Mac OS X is not even the part of the Raid system... How am I supposed to fix this issue with out the installation disk?

Jun 2, 2008I admin a network of Macs that use a 10.3.9 based OS X Server machine as a backup server. There is an iDisk account the server uses for iDisk backups and once a month I run a manual full back to CD. Tonight, the CD backup failed to run since the boot volume was basically full. Upon further inspection, I learned the boot volume is 6GB on a 20GB drive. So, I'm looking to possibly replace the hard drive. I'm also considering replacing the entire server with more modern hardware but that's another discussion.If I were to replace the 20GB hard drive in the server now with say a 60GB (we're talking PATA/IDE here) what would be the best way of doing it? We're talking about the boot volume now so I would need to move the OS and MBR and everything to the new drive.

Jul 24, 2006The Backup Exec software is able to backup all files on the Windows servers (Both remote and local) but not the XServe. During setup of the backup job I am able to browse all files on the XServe and select which ones I would like to backup. However, when i run the backup job it fales stating that the agent is either not running or not the correct version.
I then went in to test the credentials for the account used to backup the XServe and it passes for the root share and does not attempt to check the credentials on the actual files. When I called Symantec the told me that I had the correct version of the MAC Agent installed and that it will automatically run after installation of the MAC Agent.
OS X V10.5 Leopard :: Backup Drive Ejects After TM Backup?
May 7, 2012I have an external 1TB WD My Passport drive which I use for TM backup's. When I plug in via USB, DriveUnlock appears. I unlock the drive, then instigate a TM backup. All goes fine, then from what I can gather, when the TM backup has finished, the drive ejects itself. There is no error messages, unmount drive issues, it just dissappears from finder. I can only assume the backup has been successful, as no error messages appear, meaning the drive wasn't ejected while backup was in progress. I have changed the USB cable, as well as tried different ports, but the same always happens. In System Preferencies/Energy Saver, I have made sure the Put HD to sleep is un ticked. Still it happens. Has anyone else had this problem, and is it fixable? I would love to keep the drive attached and backing up for the period I am working, usually 12 hours a day, rather than the once a day at the moment.

May 22, 2012I back up my laptop on a backup disk at work (with their permission). I connect to the network, click on my work Mac mini (1.66 Core Duo, 2 GB RAM, OS 10.6.8), and then click on the MiniStack backup drive to mount it on my desktop.But recently I upgraded to Lion and now that's not working. I can see the mini in the Finder sidebar, but when I try to connect to it just says, "Connection failed" and doesn't give a reason.

Mar 21, 2006I'm using a Mac OS X Server ver 10.4.3 and I've installed the Veritas MacOS X agent for remote backup called "be_agnt.tar".
We have been able to run succesful backups for some time now (Using Backup Exec 9.1 for Windows Servers installed on a win2k server) but a few days ago I applied a service pack to the backup exec software (SP4) and now I can't connect to the remote agent from my backup exec server.
This is only true for backups and restores since I still can make selections of what data to backup thru the agent.

Apr 25, 2012I'm running the OSX Lion Wiki, and using Time Machine to backup the server.
To test my backup, I restored a new computer from the TM drive. What I found was that the Wiki wasn't being properly restored.
Digging in, I found the following:
- System log indicates an error from ServerBackup during postgre backup:
Apr 24 14:11:11 radioserve ServerBackup[31725]: Error in calling backup command for service postgresql, error :=69
- The postgre database does appear to be backing up (getting dumped into a file), but then the required tarball isn't being created. A scan of /Library/Server/PostgreSQL/Backup shows only the dumpall file, and its size and time stamp do update each Time Machine backup instance.

- Manually running ServerBackup shows the following error for postgresql:

Mac OS X Lion Server :: Time Machine Error 'Create New Backup'
May 23, 2012After updating to Lion server, I moved my Drobo over and setup Time Machine
Many users are prompeted to reuse or create a new backup.
The problem is I log in with credentials of 'USER A', and on the dialog it lists another 'USER B', userb.sparsebundle as the file to reuse.
I recently had a iMac hard drive die, and i tired to use the time machine on the server, with 'USER A' credentials, i got 4 listings and none of them were 'USER A'
I check the drobo and 'USER A''s sparsebundle is there. I have tried changeing permissions to read the sparsebudle, but the bundle is a 250k file, not a diskimage of the files even.
How do i resolve this problem of the wrong users coming up on "reuse or create new backup"?
How do i access the lost sparsebundle that i cannot log into to get the files for the user that needs them?

OS X Server V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Time Machine Not Completing Backup But No Error?
Apr 15, 2012I have Time Machine backing up my MacMini Snow Leopard Server to an external harddrive. When the backup runs, it never completes, but it also does not throw an error message. It just gets stuck around 300MB or so and eventually starts over. As you can see it does not seem to backup everything. I have tried using TimeTracker to see what it might be getting stuck on but I can't really make heads or tails of it. I have even removed the old backup and started a new one. It backs up once fully (I think) and then after that it just gets stuck like this.
I should mention the drive it backs up is two separate partitions SnowLeopard Server Volume and PrimeRoot Volume, both of which need to be backuped. I was thinking maybe a permissions issue? But I just don't know where to look.

May 13, 2012We have a Macbook and an iMac, both on Snow Leopard. Set them up on TC for backup several months ago, and they worked for a while. Then it stopped working for no obvious reason, with the message:
The network backup disk could not be accessed because there was a problem with the network username or password. Open Time Machine preferences to select the network backup disck and re-enter the correct username and password.
Of course userame and password were correct, because, first of all, they had not been changed, and second, because I could put in the wrong pw and it immediately would reject it. As it is, it takes it, counts down for 120 seconds, and then gives the above message.
Bought a new Macbook Pro, using Lion, and it works with the TC, seemingly proving that all settings on the TC are still good. Tried resetting TC. Tried the Cmd-Alt-p-r reboot, but neither worked.
