OS X Server :: Auto Banning People From Continually Trying Passwords On SSH
Nov 20, 2008
I'm getting tons of these errors in my console:
Nov 20 22:09:04 minimac com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.emlog[678]): Exited with exit code: 39
After doing research, I found out that this is from people trying to login to my SSH and trying random passwords. Is there a way to ban their IP's after a few tries?

Firstly i am running chrome.
When i go to some websites (which i have the password stored in keychain) it auto fills in username and passwords, but i have to click ok (seems pointless).
Other sites (such as facebook) when i load them they already have been logged in.
How to I get it to do this for all websites.

I'm having a problem with autofill not completing passwords. Usernames / IDs are being completed on websites but associated passwordsa are not being autofilled. I have tried to delete them from Safari/Preferences/Autofill/Usernames and Passords but I cannot delete a single entry or even the entire list! I have even tried deleting the site info: UserID and password from Keychain Access and then re-entering them manually but this does not seem to rectify the problem. Every time I open a website with a log in required, the username / ID is autofilled, but the password is now not. (It all worked previously) When I input the password, a dropdown window asks if I wish to have it remembered and I say yes, but it is not. Â

I've formatted my Mac synced with me.com and now it remembers just my usernames and not passwords, when I do type in the password it asks me do I want to store it, but it never does. Plus when I go into prefs of safari and try and delete them it wont let me do that either. Is there anyway I can delete all my usernames and passwords and start again?

Recently my Mailbox started prompting me for my password. When I enter it, I get told the MobileMe IMAP server rejects it, so my mac mail is frozen in time when viewed on my MAC. Yet I can log into to my mail via web just fine, my iPhone and iPad have no problem. It seems like this is an issue that occurred recently after I migrated ot iCloud but I cant be sure. I haven't made any other changes or software upgrades and I've been happily using mail for years. How does one resync IMAP passords on the server (if that is what I need to do)?

I use my laptop many times throughout the day, and due to classes, and studying at friends' houses, etc., I connect on average to 3 different networks a day. All of my music for iTunes is stored on a server at my house, and it easily auto connects at login when I am there. I was wondering if there was a script, or maybe even an application that would allow my laptop to only attempt to auto connect to the server when on my home network.
Obviously this isn't a dire issue, I just think it would add a little convenience to my life

So at school there are a number of servers that I commonly use and access. Everytime I want to connect to these I have to manually go to the Finder then in the toolbar click 'Go' ---> 'Connect to Server' and then type in the addresses for each of them. I have to do this everytime I restart my computer. Is it possible to have some kind of thing which will make them automatically connect o them on start up?
Also it would be even better if it automatically logged me on as well so I didn't have to manually enter my username and password.

In a previous contact software program I have used for years, the first letter of names, streets, and cities, were automatically capitalized as I typed them in. Unfortunately, that software does not work under Lion and the developer is out of business. Because of that, I am trying to convert to Address Book. I can't find the ability to have that same thing happen in Address Book. Is there something I can turn on in Preferences or some other obscure window? My old contact software also automatically filled in cities, names, or states that I previously entered. Great time saver but doesn't seem to exist in Address Book.

I don't know if this is properly autofill or autocomplete - the two overlap too much anyway so I'm not wasting brain cells trying to come up with a distinction that makes sense to non-engineers. ANYWAY. Here's the point.Â
I'm on my bank website. My login is xtnjohnson -- just like here. Only I mistyped it once, so in autofill/autocomplete (whichever it is), I get a little drop-down showing two options: xtnjohnson or xtnjohson. Â
I want to delete only the second option. I recall at sometime finding a very simple way that involved highlighting the offending entry and hitting either control-delete, shift-delete, command-delete, or function-delete, only I can't seem to get any of those combinations to work. And of course I can't find the thread anymore.Â
The solution did *not* involve dealing with the autofill preferences in *any* way -- I've seen that option and it doesn't help (a) because there's no quick way to find the website where the problem is occurring (my list is long), (b) even when I go through my list, I don't see my bank's url, (c) the place for entering my login appears to be in something like JavaScript, so I'm not sure it'd be tracked in one of those lists, and (d) I don't know that this is properly an "autofill" problem anyway.Â

I recently bought a hard disk drive for my macbook - specifically an internal, 500GB disk with 32 MB cach. I installed OSX without any problems, but lately I've noticed some programs start doing funky things (Finder getting stuck frequently for no reason, once even the settings panel got stuck, svn weird behaviour complaining a file is both non-existant, locked and not versioned, etc.). Just out of curiosity I tried checking the disk with the disk utility and it found filesystem errors.
I heard some rumours a few years ago that disks with big cachs required a bit more time before shutdown to committ everything to actual disk.
These errors and funky behaviour *seem* to appear when I reboot so I'm suspecting the rumours might be true. What do you think? Anyone out there with a big cach HDD? should I try exchanging it for one with a smaller cach or is there any setting I can access for this case? Or maybe is it simply defective?

i've had my macbook for about a year but ever since the most recent osx combined update, applications on my macbook crash continually. Safari maybe once every 5 minutes, Firefox less so. The more demanding the program, the more frequent the crashes become. Mac os itself actually crashes fairly often too.
I'm running Mac OS X 10.5.8. I upgraded both my ram and hard drive personally when I got my laptop, but i've never had problems before the update and both sets of hardware were compatible. (i forget the technical spec).

I recently downloaded Transmission, and whenever I open the program, the disc image mounts on the desktop. I can't eject it until I quit the program, and then it always pops back up when I reopen the program.

Cannot keep Safari open at all. When it crashes it asks me to submit problem report to Apple, which I do, and I then get a message saying the problem report cannot be sent, try again later -- which I have done over and over again without success. We can only go on the web now via Google Chrome but we prefer Safari as our standard browser.

If the mail application is close, iCloud mail goes offline, although my other email accounts in the mail app do NOT go offline. When I open the mail app, there is a symbol next to the iCloud account (but not next to the others) that looks like a circle with a horizontal zig-zag. When I click on that symbol I get the following message: "This account (iCloud) appears to be offline due to a network problem." If I click the button in the dialogue box that says, "Take all accounts online,", then my iCloud mail comes in right away. However, all my other mail accounts already are delivered. It is not a network or connection problem.

Recently my MacBook Air has failed to wake from sleep mode. The Apple illuminates on the back of the screen casing, but neither the screen nor hard drive actually wakes up. The only way I'm able to use the computer is by forcing a PRAM reset on restart (command-option-P-R). I've had to do this several times in the last two weeks. Â
The only things about my MacBook Air that have changed in that time period are:Â
- I installed OS Yosemite
- I installed and ran Sophos Anti-VirusÂ
(The latter was installed to counteract a problem that I was having with my email address having been spoofed and sending spam. Sophos found two bits of malware in email data files and "cleaned" them up.) Â

I was trying to discover what was eating up all my disc space on my 11 inch MBA. After doing some research I discovered over 30GB was being eaten up by a particular type of file in "/users/username/library/mail/V2/mailboxes/recovered messages/89AF938B-6B1D-44AC-9E37-158CF278B361/DATA/3/messages". I found 288 ".emlx" files, all duplicates of one another, each is 112MB big. And they continually copy themselves.
Looking at the dates, the first file in the folder was created 12/02/2012 and the most recent file in the folder was created roughly 15 minutes ago on todays date of 23/02/2012. In fact while inspecting the folder, I saw before my eyes them being duplicated. Because I had one of the files highlighted, then began to use safari for a few minutes, and when I came back, there were more of the things underneath the one which I had highlighted!
The files are email files, and they are all copies of a particular email I sent using iPhoto. I sent an album of about 25 or so photos through the iPhoto sharing feature. So is iPhoto or Mail backing up this email over and over again for some reason? They seem to copy themselves only when both iPhoto and Mail applications are open at the same time. I know this because I have experimented with it and can see more and more being created.

The design is sexy and I've been thinking of buying a laptop for some time now.Problem is I already have a 64GB iPad, which i love to death and I'm on all the time. Basically I just use it to watch movies, play games, internet searching.nothing major.Do I need a MBA? No...Do I WANT one? YES!! Just trying to find a reasonable explanation to buy one

So my parents just bought a 21.5" iMac which has replaced their aging PC that came with a CRT(!!). The first thing they noticed was that the resolution is too high. Obviously, lowering this makes everything blurry but of course, no such problem with the CRT where they had nice big text and icons.
Surely there must be a way around this? Some software solution perhaps? They've zoomed in with Safari but that doesn't help the rest of the system and is a real pain to do it for every individual app.
Its understandably difficult for them to understand why something so many years advanced of what they had, can't do something so simple as changing resolutions. I even had a hard time exaplaining that this was an LCD issue, and nothing to do with a mac.
