I installed OnyX to improve my system's performance. When I tried to use it, a window showed up asking me to enter the password. The window is different from the one that I normally see during installation. Is it safe to enter the password? In general, can hackers use freeware to collect password from the users? If so, how can we tell whether or not to enter the password?
View 11 RepliesSince I boot camped my mac (I think this is when the problem started, I've kinda ignored it for a few months) I am no longer asked for my password upon starting up my MacBook Pro, it simply automatically logs me into Lion.Â

Besides the below mentionned iMac I also still have an iMac 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with OSX 10.5.8 installed.Since a few days my mail application on the 10.5 iMac doesn't receives any incoming mails from my Me.com account and I receive constantly the request to enter my password. This mail application worked entirely well until it started asking for its password.Strangely enough I can access the concerned mail account on the below mentioned iMac, on the concerned iMac via Safari on iCloud.com and also on my iPad I tried in my opinion nearly everything suggested on the forum and the support pages. I even tried restoring the mail application from a time machine back-up prior to the incident.As incoming mail server in the Mail preferences "mail.mac.com" is mentioned. I tried to change this to "imap.mail.me.com" but even after saving the change it still mentions "mail.mac.com". what i should do to have my mail application work again on the 10.5.8 iMac? Could or should I f.i. restore other files than the Mail application from my Time Machine Back-up?Â

When I turn on my Mac mini it asks WiFi connection password eveytime.it does not save the password. I tried everything.it is too annoying and my children do not want to use it. Even worse when wakes up from energy saving mode asks both passwords.

Where oh where do i reset or input the correct details? Error message states username/password are incorrect...... but option to reset or change them or try again.

At work I work on a mac, but our files are on shared windows network drives. There's one particular drive which causes our mac users problems. It doesn't happen on all folders/files, but on some of them the following happens. I try to move a folder to another location, but then suddenly my mac asks for the system password. I fill that in and press ok, but nothing is moved. The folder is still in the same location. This only happens om certain folders and the funny thing is: when I try it on of the following days, the problem for that folder is gone and I can move the folder to the folder I wanted it to move.
But in the meantime there are other folders which can't be moved. Support - being not into Mac strangely enough - says it's a Mac problem and I should update to 10.7. It happens only to me and my colleagues at the place/office where I work. The windows server is at some place else so everything goes via internet. I keep insisting it's some kind of permissions thingy. Support says it's a Mac thing. What can be the problem and how can I make it clear to them that is isn't a mac thing?
Started with issues of my accounts wanting a password every time it checked my hotmail accounts.I could fix them a few weeks ago by deleting the account and adding a new one (same one really).thought I would do that yesterday. deleted my hotmail account.clicked the + button/tab to add a new account- NOTHING happens. zero/nada etc.so I went to file and highlighted add a accountsame thing nothing happens.so dumb me, I went into my preferences and deleted the (should not have emptied the trash) mail preferences thinking it would help.
same thing can't add accounts only delete. only now I have no accounts.rebuilt preferences, deleted caches, rebuilt again, restarted etc.any ideas or help here.don't want to go back to entourage (quit that many years ago).

You know when you log into different sites with your passcode and the window pops up to read "Would you like to save this password? How safe it that? I always resist putting in the info for fear that one day it could be stolen. I guess the real test is it safe enough to put your banking, or credit card passcode?
View 12 Replies View RelatedI own a MacBook, bought in 2008 with Leopard as an OS. It is the black model, if this helps. While I was browsing, Firefox started behaving strangely. It was taking forever to minimize windows and could not use the top right function to view all applications/windows open. I restarted the mac but when it booted up again it did not do it properly. For 10 minutes I had the greyish screen with the loading sign underneath the apple logo, then eventually it showed me the safe boot mode, asking for my password.
When I enetered it, it did not accept it (login window shakes at each attempt). I tried to log in from the CD, but again asked the password and did not accept the one I put in, even though I know it was the right one! Now I can't use the mac and can't access safe boot either. Would you know any workaround solution for this, like a way to reset the password? Have you got any clue on why the mac decided all in a sudden to boot up through the safe boot mode?
My question is simple: I'm looking for a free, safe, good password application to keep all my passwords and other account info organized. I've been using just a word doc, but I'm just starting to get a little scared with that since it holds really important stuff. Plus, it's not well organized.

View 3 Replies View RelatedIs it possible to place a password when booting into safe mode on my Mac. Let me explain a little more. I know that the accounts are all their and you can place passwords on the user accounts, but here is my problem. I use k9 web filtering and when you boot up in safe mode it does not work and you have unfiltered access to the internet. Is it possible to only allow the system admin to boot into safe mode with a password so no one else would have access? Its a work around the filter I am trying to block.

I have the Open Firmware Password enabled, which prevents my machine from booting into Safe Mode when I hold the shift key at startup (as expected). As a result, if I want to use Safe Mode I have to boot up from my install DVD, disable the password and then reboot. Very time consuming! I just read about a way to boot into Safe Mode:

I'm a little hesitant to test it out in case I run into some sort of Open Firmware/Safe Mode conflict.
My MacBook pro is only starting in safe mode and it's not recognizing my password. I have a cd in the notebook and it won't come out so I can't put in another disk if I needed to.

I've been using my Intel Mac-Mini without a hitch for three years now. Previously it had been plugged into a Samsung 32" LCD TV, but I've just swapped it over for a 1080p Panasonic 37".
Now when I turn on the mac it takes a long time to boot up and then eventually settles on a blue screen. The mouse pointer is visible but nothing else. I've tried using a dvi to vga adaptor and an HDMI to vga cable and the same thing happens.I tried a 15" Samsung monitor and the same thing happens.
If I boot in 'safe' mode it allows me to type in my password but when I try to log in it fades to blue and then returns to the log in page.
Does anybody know any free speech voices that you can actually understand unlike the ones that Apple provide? I have tried Cepstral voices but you have to licence them which I don't want to pay for. Any voices for Mac that are free and as good as the Cepstral ones. There must be some?

View 5 Replies View RelatedScrolling through that little window is the most annoying thing, besides, right in the middle of a scroll the window sends you back to the top. So you have to start again. There are updates for iTunes at least once a week and yet none of these make this feature a bit more usable.

Gave my son an iPOD last Christmas, 8 GB, now running 1.0.3 software. Nano I think. Has worked fine until now. Unit seems frozen. Was finally able to restore the unit after several attempts following Apple procedure but wheel button does not provide control so we cannot even select language to proceed. iTunes still recognizes the unit and appears on desktop but that's it. Display also quickly goes into "sleep" mode and dims. Battery display indicates full charge. Wondering if the wheel button is shot. I'm far from an iPod expert.

I empty my trash bin and junk mail bin sometimes several times a day.I usually review the junk mail folder and after that just empty the junk and than the trash bin.Is there a way, to disable the the pop up menu, asking me again, whether I am fine to erase the messages?
