OS X :: Restore State Of Mac OS And Other Apps On Boot?
Apr 1, 2009
I love Mac OS and i am addicted to spaces but rebooting your computer is such a bitch when you have 9 spaces to manually restore every time. Is there a way to have all Apps open up and restore to what they where before the reboot? Kinda like when you Macbook goes all out of battery so it saves the state to the Hard drive and when you boot it up again its just like before.

I've not got this problem, I just need some clarification on what the process is...
If the original restore discs are lost, what methods are there to restore a Mac back to it's original state (with HDD's wiped). Is it possible to get a set of restore discs from somewhere? Do restore discs from other Macs of the same model work fine? Or will SL need to be bought, upgraded and then wiped after that (I'm hearing SL is actually a full version, so by upgrading and then booting into it again, you can do an erase and install)

I would like to clean up my laptop as I have loads stuff I am trying to get rid off. I would like to get the laptop to the position just like when I bought the laptop took it out the box & start again. I know I need to back up all my stuff but would like to go down that route as I am sure its quicker for me.

So I deleted some music from My Music, not to the trash. I thought I was in a playlist and deleting from the playlist but I wasn't. And apparently there is no undo function in iTunes to undo this. Why is that? If you delete something why can't you undo it? Regardless of that is there anyway to get back to the older state of iTunes that included the tracks with the play count and the ratings that were there before? Perhaps something in Time Machine that can restore this?

I have just purchased a new MacBook Pro, however i was never issued with any recovery DVD's. In the event of a full re-instillation how would i be able to restore my system back to original state? When i spoke to the assistant in the apple shop, he told me that they were not required, is this correct? Can i purchase the recovery DVD's from Apple?

I have for some time been looking for a bluetooth mouse for my MBP, but I am still stuck between the new Magic Mouse and Logitech m555b.
I will mainly be using it for travel/mobility use, as when my MBP is on the desk, I use my ageing - but loved - Logitech MX1000.
I am not a gamer. But I think that the ability to do 360 scrolling e.g. in Lightroom could be great.
I will mainly be working in Snow Leopard, but sometimes I might need boot camp for .NET development etc.
Does current boot camp drives support borth left and right click as it was a normal mouse on the magic mouse?
Is scrolling working? How is battery life?
Is there any way of invoking Expos or DashBoard on the Magic Mouse?
Price difference between the 2 mice is not important.

I have a relatively new Mac Pro with a 320gb sata system drive. I'm giving some thought to getting a SSD and making it my system drive for booting and applications (including Photoshop CS4), and using the 320gb drive to store photos and videos.

I'm relatively new to macs, about a year in, but I've never gotten around to using Time Machine. Mainly because its not my primary machine so I'm not using it for anything serious at the moment. That being said, I somehow managed to corrupt OSX to the point where it needs to be re-installed. Basically what happened is I tried to resize my Bootcamp partition and either Disk Utility crashed or I did something wrong that caused it to during the resize.
Now whenever I click anywhere on the menu bar, the current app crashes. So what I want to know is, If I create a Time Machine backup today and then reinstall OSX. Can I then access my backup but only reinstall the apps? Or will the new version of OSX be overwritten with my corrupted one?

trying to find a way to sync only the apps I want to sync. But iTunes insists that I sync every single app I have downloaded in the past to my phone and I don't want all of them on there. Now after restoring I have a bunch of apps on my phone waiting to sync and now have to either restore again or individually delete all 155 of them.

When I restore from backup to my device iTunes then begins to sync apps. It gets to the 4th or 5th and then stalls.
My console log consistently shows
9/10/14 10:14:32.001 PM iTunes[1071]: Operation 0x7f90eac634a0 timed out!
when this happens.

The thought has never occurred to me - I really should back up my email. My ISP keeps the last three months of messages on the server, but older stuff - if I install OS X, I'll lose it. Is there a handy-dandy utility that will do this? Where are the files kept? I'm learning AppleScript out of boredom and could probably throw together a script to back it up, but I'd need to know what the files were.

If you can restore applications from a Time Machine backup? I know it can restore files and folders or the entire system, but, this MacBook was just updated to Lion and only needs the applications restored, not the system.

My 2011 macbook pro kept overheating and shutting off so I brought it to the Genius Bar at my local Apple store. They said it was not a hardware issue it was a software issue, so they wiped everything clean and instructed me to restore everything when I got home from my Passport for Mac. I did that and my data is there but not many of my Apps. I followed the instructions that they guy gave me but I can't seem to figure this out. Shouldn't the Passport have saved my apps as well?

I had a problem with my Macbook pro for some unknown reason my HDD crashed and stopped working, so I had to replace it, with a new one. Fortunately I have a 1TB My Passport Time Machine Backup that contains all my data. I had spent hours to reintsall Snow leopard, update the machine and then upgrade to Lion. The only thing now I need to do is to restore all my data. can I restore my Apps, Music, Video, my sketch up drawings and projects? or am I forced to repurchase my Apps and media?

I've got a 4 year old iMac. I have a Time Capsule and make daily backups. My question is if, err when, this iMac dies and I spring for a new shiny one, will my backup reconstitute my new machine with my current apps and data, or just the saved data?

Just wonder which should I go with? Single Raptor or raid for OS + Apps. Right now, I'm using WD 1TB, but want to spend no more than $200 for a faster HD(s).

I've recently dual-booted Mac with Ubuntu and now when I reload the router it boots up with Ubuntu's grub loader where i see an entry for Mac for both 32-bit and 64-bit. Both options, however, don't work. I have to press option key on bootup to select the HDD containing Mac OS to boot into it. I want to know if there's a way of restoring the default boot loader for Mac OS which currently is being replaced by that of Ubuntu's?

Looking at current SSD's and they do seem to offer exceptional performance. Have a little spare budget after the 6-core purchase and was wondering..
Add a (modest)
SSD as a boot and app disk?
SSD as a working/scratch disk?
Now - we all would like the biggest, fastest etc etc. But taking another view,ie in 6 months time there are going to be cheaper, faster, bigger, better value for money. So - for design CS4/5, 3D...looking for drive big enough to make worthwhile testing the water. Still a bewildering amount of options out there. A starting point seems to be 60G OCZ vertex 2 ?

I am upgrading my hard drive in my MacBook Pro and before removing the old hard drive I backed my time machine up to a NAS (Network Hard Drive). I put in the new drive and booted from the Snow Leopard DVD. I formatted it for HFS+ and then selected the option to Restore System from Full Backup. I selected my network hard drive and all seemed to go well. After clicking restart, the machine restarted, gave me the chime, and then displayed the infamous multi-language kernel panic message with some text in the background. Here's a paraphrase of the background text:
"panic (cpu 0 caller) version mis-match between Kernel and CPU PM @/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-1504.9.17/osfmk/i386/pmCPU.c:707

Today is a bad day. My old 24" iMac has finally died it looks like and is experiencing the Gray Screen Of Death. I did have an external backup drive using time machine, so I was just going to restore it to my other iMac, but I can't find my boot disk.
I know how to do it with the boot disk, but is there any way to do it without one? I just want to restore the whole thing.

Something went wrong on my mac last week. I noticed that backup couldn't complete so I restarted. Then I could no longer login to my main account (admin), but could login to my daughter and wife's managed account and could create a new admin account. I assumed this was a key chain issue so gave up trying to access and decided to restore from time machine. 2 restores (72 hrs each) and the mac will not boot after the restore. I have the ever spinning pin wheel for 24 hrs already. What can I do to get all my docs back? I don't think it's a hard drive issue (1.5TB) installed almost 6 mths ago.

Now I did the restore using my new Macbook Pro System disc to do the restore. The backup is 10.6.4. Can anyone provides me with some assistance.
