OS X :: Startup From Disc?

Oct 3, 2010

Onyx tells me to use disc utility to repair my hard drive.

To do this, I need first to start up from the install disc (CD).

It's been so long since I've had to do this that I've forgotten--

I go to System Preferences and choose the CD as startup disc, but then it wants to re-install the OS-- not what I want!

I seem to remember I need to hold down some key or other while it's starting up-- but which?

I promise to write down the answer so I won't have to ask again

MacBook :: Restore Without Install Disc?

Sep 5, 2014

there is a way to wipe my macbook clean and put it back to factory settings without an operation system install disc? I'm trying to make it run smoother and clean out the memory. I only have snow leopard on my computer and it never came with an installation disc, the snow leopard set up was an automatic set up procedure when I got the computer so i didn't have to insert any disc. Where ever I look you need the installation disk if you want to restore you computer for earlier mac versions. (i have version 10.6.8). My mothers computer didn't come with one either as it was also an automatic set up. I don't have the money for an installation disc..there is not enough memory on my computer to install Mavericks to avoid needing installation discs.

MacBook :: Unable To Install OSX 10.5 Nor OSX 10.4 Restore Disc

Feb 10, 2009

I bought OSX 10.5 Leopard about 3weeks ago and still have not been able to install it onto my macbook. When I put the disc in for the first time I went through the standard procedure of clicking install OSX and then restart when it restarts however it goes to the Grey screen with the apple and the spinning loading symbol and just sits there forever.

I thought it was the disc so I took it back and ended up with the exact same problem. I then thought maybe I should just use my factory disc and wipe out everything on the hard drive. It gave me the same problem as trying to install Leopard.

Then I thought maybe it was my CD/DVD drive. Nope! It perfectly played a DVD and I was able to install Photoshop CS4 through the CD/DVD drive as well.

A Month later I am stock with a Macbook that won't budge. I am no longer under warranty so I am trying to see if there is a way that I can fix this problem first before taking it to the apple store where I know I will get charged...I love Apple but I must confess this task would be easier to complete on a PC.

I tried going to disk Utility and erasing the drive and that did not work either because it doesn't give me the ability to click the erase button when I click the Hard Drive. I got this computer from my friend's sister and apparently I am finding out that she had the computer's Hard Drive partitioned and running Windows XP on it on the TIGER OS.

I am not sure if this has anything to do with it but I think it may be a factor as to why the OS disc both Leopard and Tiger (factory disc) will not write to the hard drive. I'm thinking maybe there are some permissions or something not allowing it to write to the drive or something to that nature.

My idea is to wipe out the Hard Drive completely I don't need anything that is on it I already backed it all up. But how would I do this? Is there a program I can use? Can I take the hard drive out and take it to a computer repair store and they hook it up to something erases it all? or should I buy a $40 HD from eBay for the macbook?

OS X :: Backup A Grey ILife Restore Disc?

May 8, 2009

A baby managed to get its hands on one of my very important grey iLife restore discs. It appears to be severely scratched, though I do not have access to my mac at the moment to make check on whether it is working or not. Nonetheless, in an effort to salvage it, is there any way to make an identical copy for backup purposes? As in, rip the contents of the original DVD and then burn them to a blank DVD?

I am not financially prepared to pay some ludicrous price to get a replacement from apple, and would like to try everything I can before I resort to... other means of obtaining iLife.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: New HDD, Tried To Restore From TM Backup Now New Disc Full?

Jul 5, 2012

My mac HD failed, I had a new one installed. I tried to restore from external TM backup, but it didn't seem to work.  I tried two times - the second time, it failed and indicated that I didn't have space on my new drive.  My original drive was 320g, new drive is 500g.  I had about 80g of data on the new drive.  Finder now shows that the new drive has only 25g available (old backup was about 280g). My attempt to restore to my last backup (3/27/2012) didn't seem to work, my old files are not on my new machine.

I'm thinking my best bet is just to undo whatever has been done to my new drive.  I don't have a problem formatting the new drive, as there is nothing really on it that must be saved at this point.  I am not well versed in Macs (obviously), but I have enough tech sense to follow steps if somebody could offer them.  How can I undo this?  Should I just format the new HD and do a Snow Leopard install from scratch, and then try again to restore from my time machine backup?

OS X :: Leopard Won't Boot Not Find Startup Disc?

Jan 1, 2009

I need your help please. It all started when I was trying to install Windows XP under Boot Camp on my Macbook Pro (Leopard). I followed the manual and made the partition for Windows (32GB), but when I inserted Windows XP Install CD and had to choose partition to install it on, there was just one that seemed to be my Leopard startup disc (it had some 120GB). I did not know what to do, so I just left the installation process and the notebook restarted. When it loaded, it was trying to boot from the Windows CD so I tried to install it, but same problem appeared -> restart. I tried to load Leopard by holding Option key while loading, but only options for windows and windows cd appeared, no Leopard -> Shut down. While booting, I force-ejected the CD by holding down trackpad button -> blinking underscore on black screen appeared. I shut the MBP down by holding power button and inserted Leopard Install CD. When it loaded, I booted from the CD by holding Option key. This time I was ready to even re-install Leopard just to make it work but when I had to chose the harddisk to install Leopard on, there was none. It seems to me that somehow nobody can see the harddisk and I have no idea what to do with it.

MacBook Pro Wont Recognize A Startup Disc

Mar 25, 2012

So I tried to restore my MacBook Pro from the Disc Utility and now that it had completed restoring and erasing the old data opff the HDD, my MBP doesnt even recognize that there is a HD in it!  I tried to select the HDD using the "hold OPTION key at startup" ordeal and shows absolutely no drive what so ever, even though I restored it from a backup HDD. Before it would show just a loading Apple gray screen and go nowhere, but i was still able to 'see' the drive with the OPTIONS key startup. Now when I do the selectable drive startup it shows NOTHING but a blank folder, with a question mar, flashing on the screen.
