OS X :: Require Password Window Comes Up After Sleep Mode
Jan 6, 2010I've been having a annoying issue with the require password window that comes up after sleep. I used to just hit a key on the keyboard, the MBP would wake up and immediately I could enter my password. Now, the password window appears, I start typing but then the window disappears and then re-appears while I'm typing, forcing me to select the password I had started writing and re-type it.

I do NOT use a screensaver so I don't understand what is going on... any tips? I put the screen to sleep after 15 minutes and each time that happens, I have to enter my password to get back in.

Dec 29, 2009As of last night, my MBP started acting very strangely. After entering my username and password, it would enter the desktop for a short period of time and then kick back into sleep mode; the screen would turn back to black. Sometimes it will let me stay on the desktop for a long time and other times it will hardly let me stay on the desktop. I called apple support and they had me start the computer in safe mode; even then it occasionally kicks me out.
The tech guy said that it was a "strange software issue" and not a hardware issue. I thought it was a hard drive issue; my hard drive makes an odd sound when it unlocks (a grinding sound), but it has been doing that for quite some time with no issues. I tried to reset the SMC and it didn't do anything.
How should I remedy this problem? Is this a hard drive issue? Hard drive failure? Has the grinding sound finally caught up with me? I am running OS X; not leopard or snow leopard. I know I need to upgrade, but this shouldn't be happening.

Nov 17, 2010I'm in the process of updating our server from 10.4 to 10.6.5. And I've noticed a very disturbing problem. First, I don't need a lecture on enabling the root account. I have a strong password and appropriate security measures in place (both physical and configuration wise), and I understand the risks.
Under 10.4, I was able to set the Security Preferences of the root account to "Require Password Immediately After Screen Saver Begins". Worked just fine and dandy. Under 10.6.5, when logged in as root, this option seems to be ignored. I have run a repair permissions, verify disk and both report no problems. It also seems to ignore the "Log out after XX minutes of inactivity" as well.

May 6, 2010For work, I got a new MBP 15" a month ago and we have the computer set to require password to wake computer/screensaver. When I type in my password, it sometimes takes up to a minute for it to authenticate the password. Other times it takes a second like normal. I check the error logs and nothing is coming up during those times.

May 2, 2012Just curious if there is a way to not allow the user to change the "Require password" option (Security Prefs/General) in Lion (10.7.3). If I make the user managed by the server I could disable the pane, but I'd rather than do that in this case. Any way to do it with a standalone machine? Aug 10, 2009I am running Mac Mini as a home server (turns out to be not a great idea, btw), and even though I set the preference to never sleep or shut down, it does go to sleep when there is no activity for long time. Since I am using it as home server, it should stay awake all the time or at least wake up from sleep when there is incoming ping from other computer, but it just goes to sleep.

Aug 25, 2009I have been trying to set up an AirPort Express in client mode so I can have some remote speakers to listen too but I have been having problems. I have everything set up and I go into AirPort Utility and choose the Express (at this time I have selected the Express as my network). I am able to choose the option to join an existing network (my AirPort Extreme) and AirPort Utility then shows me my settings and everything looks okay, but when APU restarts the Express I get an error message that says that APU can not find the Express's network. I go to the Express and it is blinking amber (not a good sign). I have the Express' MAC added to the Access Control Pane in the AirPort Extreme's preferences. I have read Apple's support article and followed it to a T and yet I still get the error message.
