OS X :: 10.6.5 - Require Password After Screen Saver?

Nov 17, 2010

I'm in the process of updating our server from 10.4 to 10.6.5. And I've noticed a very disturbing problem. First, I don't need a lecture on enabling the root account. I have a strong password and appropriate security measures in place (both physical and configuration wise), and I understand the risks.

Under 10.4, I was able to set the Security Preferences of the root account to "Require Password Immediately After Screen Saver Begins". Worked just fine and dandy. Under 10.6.5, when logged in as root, this option seems to be ignored. I have run a repair permissions, verify disk and both report no problems. It also seems to ignore the "Log out after XX minutes of inactivity" as well.

MacBook Pro :: Setting Password Protected Screen Saver In OS X

Sep 9, 2010

Think about this for a second: I only have the computer plugged in when in the house. I only need a password when not in the house. Is there a way to make it so that it only requires password to wake from screensaver or sleep when it runs of battery and not power? I know you can do this in windows 7 but I don't know about OSX.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Why Does Screen Saver Prompt For Secure Disk Image Password

Mar 17, 2012

I go into System Preferences->Dektop & Screen Saver.  As the program "loads" availabe image sources and such I get a pop-up requesting a password to my secure disk image. Yes, I have a secure disk image in my home directory. Yes, the secure disk image is currently "locked" (Not mounted in finder).

I click cancel (a few times, probably 2 maybe 3 times) and things continue along fine. I select a photo source that I want for a screen save and exit peferences. I then go an start the screen saver (I'm using Hot-Corners). I get the message "Looking for pictures....." for , well...basically forever...

Sure enough I touch the mouse to leave my screen saver and there is the pop-up again.  Asking for me to unlock my secure disk image.

I thought this might be related to Spotlight.  I tried reading several threads and have gone as far as taking my entire hard-drive/volume and putting it into the "Privacy" tab under spotlight.

how I might get it so the "Desktop & Screen Saver" stop prompting me to unlock my secure disk image?  (WITHOUT having to make sure the disk image is unlocked before I sleep my screen or open the screen saver utlity) As always, I am only speculating that this is Spotlight related so that could be a red-herring....

Laptops :: Taking Long Time To Accept Login Password From Screen Saver

Mar 5, 2010

Using my network mobile account, when I type in my password to login from the screensaver it takes a very long time and then goes back to the screensaver. Actually it takes a long time to accept my password always. Is it possible that it is timing out at the screensaver. If I type in the name and password for the admin account for the local login it works right away. The machine is a macbook pro 2.53 ghz mid 2009 model. it's running 10.5.8.

OS X :: Require Password Window Comes Up After Sleep Mode

Jan 6, 2010

I've been having a annoying issue with the require password window that comes up after sleep. I used to just hit a key on the keyboard, the MBP would wake up and immediately I could enter my password. Now, the password window appears, I start typing but then the window disappears and then re-appears while I'm typing, forcing me to select the password I had started writing and re-type it.

I check the error logs and nothing is coming up during those times.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Force Require Password Option - Not Allowing User To Disable It

May 2, 2012

Just curious if there is a way to not allow the user to change the "Require password" option (Security Prefs/General) in Lion (10.7.3). If I make the user managed by the server I could disable the pane, but I'd rather than do that in this case. Any way to do it with a standalone machine? I want to force the Require password option and not allow the user to disable it.

OS X :: Data Read Protected In Case Of Theft If Set "require Password To Wake"?

Dec 1, 2008

There have been a number of laptop thefts at gun/knife point in my neighborhood recently. I'm backing up all my data frequently, but wouldn't want a thief to have access to my personal information like bank statements, personal pictures, etc, stored on my laptop. If I set "Require password to wake this computer from sleep or screen saver" in Security of System Preferences, does this really mean there's no way for somebody else to gain control apart from re-formatting the drive?

OS X :: Monitor Wake Up With Screen Saver Image On Screen

Jul 15, 2010

I have a Quad Core Mac Pro running Snow Leopard 10.6.4. I've been having this issue for the past couple of weeks. Basically I have my monitor set to turn off after after 15 minutes of inactivity, my Mac Pro is always on. After 5 minutes of inactivity my screensaver comes on and stays on until my monitor turns off. When I move my mouse to wake my monitor, sometimes an image from the screensaver appears onscreen for a few seconds and then disappears when my desktop appears.

I have repaired Permissions, rebuilt my drive using Disk Warrior, installed the 10.6.4 Combo update but the issue remains. An image from the screensaver doesn't always appear when I turn on my monitor, this issue is sort of random. Usually my desktop appears right away with no static image from the screensaver.

OS X :: Display Sleep Vs Screen Saver

Aug 25, 2010

So I've bee tinkering with my energy preferences in order to get the best battery life I can, I've turned down the brightness to 1, my keyboard back light, to 1 (when I'm watching a movie in a dark room) and I've set it as the 'better battery' option. But now i'm a bit confused. What's the point in the screensaver if you can set your display to sleep (which i'm sure would save more energy). Is it just to look pretty?
How does everyone have their notebooks set-up to get the most out of their battery? Lastly, the 'better battery' option in energy preferences, does this do anything apart from adjust the display/computer sleep? I read that it reduces processor power hence the 'better performance' option.

OS X :: Setting Screen - Saver As Desktop BG

Oct 15, 2010

So there's this great hidden feature of OS X that allows you to set your screen-saver animation as your desktop background, but it is a Terminal command and it requires Terminal to be running in order to continue executing it. Here it is: Code: System/Library/Frameworks/ScreenSaver.framework/Resources/ScreenSaverEngine.app/Contents/MacOS/ScreenSaverEngine -background So the million-dollar question is → Does anybody know of a way to keep this running even after you quit Terminal? Yeah I know, it's a waste of CPU cycles and battery power... but my Mac is plenty fast and is a desktop machine so I'm not concerned about that. So how about a Terminal command to made the above Terminal command not require Terminal to be open in order to continue?

OS X :: Turn Off Display Instead Of Screen Saver

Is there a way to make it so that instead of my screen saver turning on, I can have the display turn off? I know I can set it to automatically do this after a few minutes, but I use a hot corner to turn my screensaver on, and would like to turn my display off when needed instead. I see no reason to keep the display powered just to show a pointless picture. I know I can hold down the decrease brightness button until it goes all the way down, but is there another way? I have a Unibody MB.
