Accidentally reformatted an external 500 gig hard drive, half was time machine, half was files. I'd prefer it all back but what I REALLY only need is one folder from it of my archived work. I contacted a few data recovery companies, they all charge quite a bit. Gillware seems reputable and the most reasonable. I tried a demo of a recovery software named Phoenix, it found absolutely nothing.
View 6 RepliesI have an imac and a few months ago I wiped the computer using a 7 pass wipe or whatever it's called - i totally wiped everything off the computer as i thought it had a virus. I also then reformatted my external hard drive. My mac and my harddrive now have new data on but can you beleive it, I have lost a very important document which was on my mac before it was wiped and was on my external hard drive and I really need it back.

I was putting in a new external HD into a external dock, that I was going to partition and format for Mac. Well I must have had my movie External drive on and overlooked it somehow, and accidentally formatted that one instead thinking that I was using the new drive. What was strange was it said the drive was not readable and needed to be initialized. So I assumed, that was the drive that needed to be partitioned, yes I partitioned it, then formatted it for Mac. I even wrote some files on it about 20 GB or so. We are talking about a 1 TB HD. Anyway , It's not possible is it to reclaim my drive is it? Sad thing is it was my movies drive. I lost 151 movies. I am so angry at myself. And of course it was not part of my time machine. So am I out of luck?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a 1TB external hard drive I use for backing up my digital camera pics. I have been using it on my parents compaq presario. However I recently made the switch to a Mac and bought a early 2005 Power Mac g5 dual 2.0ghz with osx 10.5 on it. The question I want to know is, if I unplug the drive from the presario and plug it into the back of the g%, will the files show up or does the drive need to be reformatted?
If so i'll just back everything up and reformat it and switch the drive to my computer.
My kid accidentally plugged my external hard drive (which I use to back up my Think Pad laptop) to my new MacBook Pro and let Time Machine reformatted it to become my mac's backup disk. Now all data that I stored before in that external hard drive is lost. How can I restore it?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI went to make a copy of an important drive and accidentally re-formatted it (re-formatted mac journaled, originally mac journaled). The drive contained a bunch of important disk image files which I need to retrieve whole. I'm fairly confident that the files are still there and only the table information got overwritten, as the re-format took about 30 seconds. None of the recovery software I've seen however, can retrieve .dmg files, or such large files (these are up to 32 gb each in size).how I can retrieve these disk image files?

My time machine backups to an external drive stopped with a message that the backup could not be done because the drive could not be repaired and needed to be reformatted. Prior to reformatting I copied the TM backup file of 250GB to my desktop. My internal drive is 500GB and this only leaves me with 33GB of available space. I then reformatted the drive with the proper OS extended journaled and GUID partition. The external drive is 500GB. When I try to copy the backup file from the desktop to the reformatted drive the process begins normally with the message "preparing to copy files" but as the preparation process reaches 13,000,000 files it stops with the message "there is not enough sufficient space to copy files" even though it never even got to the actual file transfer. I have tried copying the backups in small batches to the new drive but I get an error message that backup files cannot be modified.

I have about 3-4 years worth of emails stored locally on my mac, every year or so, in the Mail App, I drag my emails from my inbox, and into a local folder I made in the Mail app. Today I run mail, and the local folders are gone, why would it just disappear like that?
How can I retrieve it?
Where did "save as" go in Pages 2009? It works fine in 2008, but can't find the command in 2009. Choices seem to be - "save copy" which saves document under existing name, or "duplicate" which saves a copy but then name & folder have to be edited. How can I save a changes as a new file name, in new location?

I am running on Mail 3.6 on OS X 10.5.8. When I archive a mailbox, it is saved as a text file that opens in TextEdit. I have all of my archived mailboxes in one folder. However, if I try to search for a word in that folder using Spotlight, nothing comes up. It seems that Spotlight does not recognize these files. How can I do a search of archived mailboxes?

Im trying to clean out my hdd, and found 10GB of archived mail. I have my gmail setup with IMAP, so i have a copy on googles servers of everything. How can I delete these archives without deleting the copy on gmail? I just want to start fresh on my end, and leave everything save on the server.

Tray 2: 1TB storage drive
External 1 FW800: 1TB storage drive
And then mirroring the TB drives with a OS X software Raid 1.
But, if one drive crashes, is the other drive instantly usable? How do you separate or recover the "mirrored" drive in a Raid 1?
Also, can you do a Raid 1 with a drive on an SATA, and then a FW800 with such different transfer speeds, will the FW800 drive be able to write as fast as the SATA one, or will the SATA one have to slow down?
What is the best way to have an internal drive in the Mac Pro, and then have it real-time mirrored on an external? Or is this not possible.
Mac OS X can't repair the disk - You can still open or copy files on the disk but you can't save changes to files on the disk. Back up the disk and reformat it as soon as you can and in Disk Utility:

so i attempted to back up my files off the drive, but all the files seemed to be corrupt or something, so i panicked and ran diskwarrior instead of going back to ipartition and attempting to recover the drive in there. DiskWarrior sort of "fixed" the problem by making the error messages go away in OSX and in Disk Utility, but the files on the drive still seem to be corrupt giving me such errors as:

I just got my new MBP today and had some files I wanted to move from my external hdd to my new laptop. I was running windows 7 on my desktop that the external hdd was plugged into. When I plugged it into my mac I couldn't see any of the files so I plugged it back into my desktop only to find out my desktop couldn't discover it. After doing a little research on the web I came to believe that by plugging it into my mac it got reformatted. I had a lot of important info on my hdd and I was wondering if there was any way I could recover it.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI recently backed up some DVD's via Toast using Toast own file format.They were backed up straight to the external HD itself.
I checked that they were all working after the process finished, they were working.
But I think my MBP went into standby whilst the External HD was still connected, and so it was never ejected properly.
Now that I've come to view the files again, they aren't there!!
There's just a Zero KB file, called 'photography', which was the name of the folder they were stored in.
I've tried viewing the folder under windows via VMware, but it says the folder is inaccessible due to being corrupt, or something.
Can anyone point me in the right direction for recovering those files?
The external HD is NTFS, I think I used a patch so that my MBP could read/write files to it.
I had a WD external hard disk which I was using on my pc but not any more since I'm not a pc user any more. However, I'm a mac user now but when I connected my WD external hard disk I found out that i have lost everything on it. I have an external USB HDD that was originally formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled), it was accidentally erased (using Disk utility) and re-formatted to FAT32. the HDD has not been used since (other than to try and recover the data using various tools), so no new data was been written to it.

I now want to delete messages in my work gmail, But want to make sure that the messages in my Apple Mail will save there forever, even after my work gmail account is archived or deleted?Is there another setting I can click to keep the gmail account on Apple Mail from updating, so myI can start deleting personal emails from my gmail ?

It seems I have accidentally deleted a 500gb external hard drive (formatted as OSX Journaled), but the trash has not been emptied so the drive is still very full. When the hard drive is mounted, OSX previews these deleted files in the systems main trash folder. How can I restore these files to the hard drive? I had mounted my drive to a G5 tower and it was severely frozen and would not let me shut down. I forced the computer off while the drive was still running and now when I try to mount it it, every computer tells me that the drive I inserted is not readable, and it gives me the option to initialize, ignore, or eject. My question is, is it possible to take out the harddisk, put it in an external enclosure and plug it in to another mac to get the files?? If so, what enclosure should I buy?It is a summer 2007 macbook pro.
I reformated an Edmini with disk utility... which I know sounds stupid, but the ethernet port wasn't working... or I couldn't connect to it through ethernet. So I connected it through the USB port and reformatted it.. and now I believe i've turned it into a paper weight. Does anybody know of a way to fix it? To atleast put it back to where it was (only connecting through the USB port?)

When I press caps lock, no green light turns on and letters remain in non-capital form. Even when I hold Caps lock for a few seconds, nothing happens. If I physically connect an apple keyboard via usb to my computer, caps lock doesn't work.

I have PhotoRec but can't seem to navigate to my NTFS external to save the data (the only drive big enough to save the data too is my girlfriend's 500GB external and it is NTFS).
Any tips to getting photorec to navigate to the drive (I am pulling from one external to another). Photorec sees the one I want to save too I just can't get it to select it. Also if there are any other programs yall recommend, I will give them a shot.
