I have accidentally deleted a couple of DMGs that I would like to get back. I dragged them to trash and emptied the trash, but notvia "secure empty". I have FileSalvage and a trial version of DataRescue, but I can't seem to get either to recover any DMG/Disk image files.

The program I was using ( Data Rescue 3 ) renamed all my .jpegs in its search of my deleted files. So when I searched for the one I wanted not only did it not come up, but I was searching through 40,000+ jpegs one by one. Didn't get too far before I gave that up.
Is this normal for a data recovery program? Since I deleted them, it deleted the file structure for it so it renames them?
And has anyone successfully restored a deleted item? Just wanna save a few jpegs, that I was attached to.
I've never backed up my HD in the 4+ years of owing a mac so thats out of the option unfortunately. Looks like I know what I'll as for for christmas. An external.

I have been searching all over this site, but I am in a time crunch. I deleted a paper saved as a word file earlier this afternoon. I downloaded Data Rescue II and FileSalvage, but they are both pretty expensive and I am not sure if the demo actually found the file i need. Can anyone direct me to a free program that works well, or confirm that one of those two programs works before I drop $100 to save a 7 page paper.

View 5 Replies View Relatedin the Mail tool, I was cleaning out old emails from a folder called "old email" I had gotten from 1600 to 800 and somehow deleted the entire folder called "old email" and it's gone!? Nothing in trash. Can I find this folder and recover the 800 emails?

I spent the better part of the afternoon trying to sort out a mail sending issue with my work Macbook (10.5.8).I basically receive email from 2 accounts ( personal email account and work wmail account). Because I'm behind a proxy server at work I had to play around with the settings so that I could send emails via the work account but receive replies to my personal account. I spent a bit of time playing with the settings and trying different things. Eventually I got everything working fine, BUT in the process I decided to delete my personal account and re-configure it. Again, all went well, except for the fact that the 2K emails (collected over the past year or so) sitting in my in-box were removed as well. When I added my personal email account back in I only got emails that were currently sitting on the (pop) mail server. The previous years worth of emails dissapeared. Where do emails go when you remove an email account from osx mail? Surely they don't delete without trace? is it possible to recover those emails from a delted account?
View 3 Replies View RelatedSo my friend, whos' computer this is, deleted my account and all its files associated with it (when he was mad at me lol) but didn't realize or forgot that there was a text document on there with atleast 30 hrs of work on it and i hadn't managed to back it up on another system yet. so is there any way to recover this file? I have filesalvage running currently and tried diskwarrior but that didn't seem to be the proper tool to use. Any mac freaks got any advice? It'd be really nice NOT to have to repeat 30 hrs of work, but at this rate its already taken 10 hrs or so just trying to recover this file.

A while back, after closing my business I canceled my account with Intermedia where my company email accounts were hosted.
Ever since, when using Entourage with my personal email accounts, Entourage kept prompting me that it was not able to connect to my business account. I usually ignored these warnings, but a few days ago, they became so annoying, that I went into Preferences and deleted the account- without thinking.
This was the last placed that these emails were stored and I desperately need them as evidence in a lawsuit that I am currently involved in.
I have not been backing up my computer anywhere, but I know they have to be here somewhere, right?
I'm willing to pay for any recovery software or hardware that anyone recommends
I recently decided to install and run Thunderbird as my new email client. I would occasionally go back to Mail to view earlier emails. This could be a bit of a nuisance though since Mail insisted on updating itself and downloading all the mail that had arrived for my account since I last opened the application. I thought the way to stop this so I could search my old Inbox in peace was to delete my account details. I didn't realise this would also delete the Inbox. Does anyone know whether/if/how I can recover this old mail. Simply reentering my old account details was not enough to 'restore' the old Inbox.

What partition my notes would be in and what the file would look like. I have used recovery software, but am unsure how to identify my deleted (from trash) notes.

My boss accidentally deleted all the messages in his inbox in Apple Mail and since it syncs with the server (mediatemple), they're all gone from the webmail too. Is there anyway to recover these files? I sent a support request to mediatemple to see if they have backups that they can recover too.
We have a tape backup system here at work that backs up his user account. Would there be a specific file to look for that might contain the old messages?
After some warning signs in the last few weeks (not ejected properly, drive icon disappearing from desktop) my Lace BigDisk Extreme 1TB Drive is now seemingly gone forever. No backup.
Not ejected properly warnings were inappropriate as I never unplugged it ... icon disappearing - I simply pulled to power supply pin out of the back and re-inserted it and it came back. Now it-s gone. Lacie has sent a new power supply to me but it did not solve the problem ... the power supply brick light blinks very faintly .. when I pull the p/s pin out of the drive, the power supply brick lights up solid green.
This type of failure seems to be a common occurence. Anyways, I need to recover the data if possible. My options seem to be:
1. Pay a data recovery service $600.
2. Buy the current version of the Lacie that I have and swap out the disks, so that I can at least get to the data. I believe that the current version is the:
d2 Quadra Hard Disk 1 TB eSATA/FireWire800/FireWire400/USB 2.0 .. does anyone know for sure?
3. Buy some other lower priced enclosure with usb or firewire interface to get to the data (but I don't have a clue what to buy)
Does anyone know if either options 2 or 3 will work and which would be the least painful to deal with? I'm not a hardware guy
Lastly, I cannot get the screw off of the back of my dead Lacie drive .. it appears to be a small phillips head but it turns out it's not. What tool do I need to get it off? Or is it opened up some other way?
If anyone could guide me thru the steps to recovery it would be much appreciated!
This is a strange one. If I send an image via email (Mac Mail) and then put the image in the trash, I am unable to empty the trash unless I quit the Mail app. FInder is stating the file is in use. Something is getting hung up, but not sure where.

it seems like its saved the old image info in a cache or something can i wipe it clean and start over some way?
Well, after using Monolingual on my iBook G4 late '04 1.2GHZ running Tiger 10.4.11 I tried to install an app from a dmg file and the image mounts but when clicked Finder relaunches (or at least seems to because it blinks off then back on as when relaunching) and the image does not open. Did I mess up the architectures? I left the architectures as marked by Monolingual and proceeded with the deletion.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just got a new MacBook Pro at work, and it is running Lion 10.7.2. So far, the system will not mount any disk images, although all programs are also brand new. Neither .iso nor .dmg works. The warning message I receive each time says "Warning: The following disk images couldn't be opened ... Reason: not recognized" Disk Utility is also unable to mount the files.

I am having this problem with disk images (no matter if they are .dmgs or isos or whatever) in a Lion 10.7.3 fully updated iMac: when openning one of these from the desktop or a Finder window, the disk utility helper starts opening and checking the image, and then it gets to a point where a window opens as a result with the message "image could not be opened, file system not allowed" (or so, I'm translating the message from Spanish).
And after that, no image I ever click even shows even theprogress dialog. Just nothing happens. I still see the process in Activity Monitor, and force quitting it allows the helper to work again, but I never get a .dmg to open up (so I cannot install anything...). The same images work perfectly in other computers and systems..

I want to install a file " divxinstaller.dmg" but I get a warning pop up window that says "the following disk images failed to mount....no mountable file system". I have a imac g5, with os x 10.3.9. I am only installing this divx.dmg program because I was told that it would fix a problem I have with my quicktime player. When I try to play avi files that I have. All I get is the quicktime player opened with the correct movie time code and viewing format size but I get no sound and no image, just a white screen.

Common workarounds are: a second USB drive attached to TC or open TC and re-partition the internal drive.
As a dirty hack, I created a disk image on TC's hard-disk and I mount it via an AppleScript. The concept is the same as Loopback devices in Linux or Solaris except for the fact that disk files cannot be shared among multiple users at the same time.
I created some blank disk images to store sensitive data in; with some I created my own password and with others I had the system do it. I also made the mistake of instructing the system to remember the passwords. Remembering the passwords kind of defeats the purpose as it automatically opens the folders. I want to be prompted for a password and never have been. I want to delete the blank disk image folders, but have not found a way of doing this and then I will create them again and instruct it not to remember the passwords. How to delete or change the password settings?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI keep several encrypted disk images in the Dropbox folder on my laptop. Can I use File Vault to encrypt the laptop when it contains these already encrypted .dmg and .sparsebundle files? Or will this double encryption harm them?
(These folders need to be individually encrypted to reside in an encrypted form on the Dropbox server. If I unencrypt them and use only File Vault, then when I'm on the computer and File Vault is off, the folders will sync to Dropbox in their unencrypted form. I want to keep these folders individually encrypted for security on the Dropbox server, then use FIle Vault on top of that to secure the rest of my laptop in case of theft).

I'm low on internal hard drive space. Am using Time Machine. It appears that Time Machine is creating disk images in my downloads folder, taking up even more space. Is there some way to limit or stop that process and just use Time Machine to back up.

View 23 Replies View RelatedI deleted a folder that nearly summed up to be 50 GB worth of files. I simply dragged the folder over the trash can. Now, the trash can shows empty (I never emptied it and it never even showed full) and the folder isn't where it used to be. I searched for the folder in Spotlight and it apparently doesn't exist. But my hard drive's memory sure thinks so. I didn't get the 50 GB back. What happened?
