OS X :: Okay To Move Apps From Applications To Utilities?
Aug 18, 2009
I was wondering if it is okay to move applications in the "Applications" folder to the "Utilities" folder. Does it actually make any difference? Will everything work just as fine as if it was in the "Applications" folder?
I am asking because there are apps like Automator, which I never use, but would like to keep. And since Automator comes with OS X, it makes it look like as if I shouldn't remove it.

I just bought windows xp and i am just trying to install through boot camp. I downloaded Boot Camp Beta 1.4 installation and set-up guide. On step 1 it ask to "open boot camp assistant (located in Applications/Utilities/) and follow the on-screen instructions." I can't find Boot camp Assistant in the utilities folder. I am using a white macbook with mac os x 10.4.11.

I'm THIS close to putting an SSD in my optical bay, and using it for the OS and applications, and will leave all of my data on my HDD. The problem is that my HDD is 600Gb that's about 400Gb full, and I'm looking at a 128 or even 256Gb SSD. Since the SSD is smaller than the HDD, I can't just do a full recovery to the SSD then move data files to the HDD.
My question is, what is the right way to migrate all of the OS files and applications to a different drive, while leaving everything else on the HDD?

I moved my iTunes library to an external HD in order to free up space in my computer. Unfortunately, that HD is unreliable, so I'm moving things to a new HD. The catch is that I discovered that iTunes has been syncing music to the unreliable external HD but syncing iPhone apps to a separate iTunes library on my computer that I didn't know about until today. How do I get the apps into the external HD's library (so that I can then move it all to the new HD)?
I tried consolidation - apparently that only works in regard to music, movies, books and other media, because it didn't move a single app.

I have a 2007 non unibody MBP. I have the OptiBay as well. I'm going to install my old HDD in the optibay because my 2007 MBP has ATA. The SSD will be installed with SATA in the old HD position.
What I'd like to do is to have only the OS and all apps including my virtual machine on the SSD and use my HDD as the files server, but keep the OS and apps there as a back plan in case the SSD dies suddenly. What is the best way to get my OS and apps from the HDD to the new SSD?

I don't know what happened, I was using my laptop fine this morning, this afternoon when I opened it up again and tried to open my applications on the dock, they all have big question marks on them. So I went to my applications folder and there is nothing there. I have even lost itunes and safari and all the utilities that comes with apple. I still have all my movie collections and folders and pictures though. It's just my applications that I can't find. I did a little reading and found out that I might have to "repair the permissions" but I don't have "disk utility" to do that with cause it's not there. Is repairing the permission the solution? And if so, is there another software that can do that for me? I have a macbook unibody, running os 10.5.8.

I had issues with my old hard drive that kept from using time machine, address book syncing with mobile me, shutting down, disk repair, and permissions repair. Next, I did extensive research on each issue and realized the best thing to do was upgrade my hard-drive (from 110 Gigs to 500 Gigs and an additional gig of memory) and start fresh with Snow Leopard I used carbon copy to do a complete bootable copy of my previous hard drive. I do not have any time machine backups. I opted to save time and have a local shop (Onyx here in Atlanta) do the HD install I did not have them do a data move or port. So now I am left with getting all my necessary apps, preferences, and other data (photos, iTunes, etc...) either installed and updated or moved from the old hard-drive.
I've run across a few threads on here that talk about these items but I still have a few questions. Some are basic so please forgive me. Will I have any problems reinstalling the applications (like iWork, MS Office 08, Adobe Acrobat 8, Omni Focus, Omni Notetaker, and/or other paid apps) with the serial numbers used on my previous hard-drive? Is it better to reinstall these apps or move them over? How does one move over apps? Is it best to the migration tool? (I've never used the migration tool)
I don't want to corrupt my permissions or library files as I had done on my previous harddrive. So will using the migration tool to move apps over move over the corrupted or troubled library files associated with particular apps? Are there good threads that speak to these particular issues? Also, are there helpful guides, online bo oks or sites that speak to these issues? I do want to get a clean start but there are some things I dont' want to lose. Things like my bookmarks in Firefox and Safari, my OmniFocus database. Lastly, the technician thought my original 110 gig hard-drive was about physically die due to how slowly it shut down and given the issues I was having. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

The video card on the G5 iMac that I was using died so I bought a Mac Pro with Lion installed. I'd like to keep the apps that are on the old drive but I understand that they won't work with Lion. The old drive from the G5iMac has two partitions with Tiger on one of them and nothing on the other one. I'm considering installing Snow Leopard on the other partition since it's documented that Snow Leopard will work with the apps that I used on Tiger. Does anyone know if it is possible to transfer apps from the Tiger partition to the Snow Leopard partition? I've heard it said that the move must be from one *drive* to another--that Apple does not support the transfer of apps from one OS from one partition to another on the same drive. (The Mac Pro has 2.8 GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon processer with 3gb of RAM.)

I'm looking for a way to keep distraction to a minimum when working. I'd like to have an app (or a setting) that enables me to automatically hide any apps that I switch out of. Are there any apps or hidden settings within OS X out there that would solve this issue for me? I know about Spirited Away, but it doesn't work for me and hasn't been updated in a while.
I'm running OS X v10.6.1.

I have a Dual 1.8 G5 and my hard drive has started to make a clicking sound every now and then. I believe it may be on the verge of dying anyday. Since i have space to put in another internal hard drive i am planning to get a WD Black Caviar 1TB and put it in.
Now my question is how do i move all my application from the old internal drive to the new internal drive. From what i have researched it seems that using a enclosure is the way to go but all the info i have seen is referring to replacing the drive rather adding a new one.I would like to move everything to the new drive and make that a master. What is the best way to perform this task?

I have a simple two drive set up on my G5, one for data, one for Applications & the OS. I think I've left too many items on the App & OS drive, and am wondering if you can tell me what else I should move. Or put another way , what standard file or folder names should be included in the OS & App drive, and what can be safely moved to the data only drive. . I've searched around the forums, MROOGLE, but with no luck... Here's an attached screen shot of my finder. the drive named "macintosh HD" is the drive want just for OS & Apps (not sure how to imbed the image right in the posting) It's the original 160GB drive that has only 35GB of space remaining. What can be moved, and will it make my machine and apps boot more quickly?

Now that I am using the iCloud I want my own iTune account so that my husband's devices don't synch with my devices. Do I have to purchase the apps again in my new account or can I transfer them from my husband's account?

I would like to create a Smart folder that only has applications & utilities in a sub-folder.
This will be similar to the default applications folder that shows in the dock, but without all the extra files & folders - just a list of applications.
I can do this by esily by just having a smart folder of applications showing only type=application.
However, I would still like to have utilities in a sub-folder.
If thats not possible, then it would be OK to have 2 seperate smart folders, 1 for apps excluding utilities & 1 for utilities only.
Is there some way in the smart folder options i can exclude a sub directory?

However, I can't find "Utilities" and "Disk Utility" in the installer (I am at the point where after you click agree to the agreement and where you choose your disk to install SL on)

I recently upgraded to 10.6.4 but stupidly did not create a back up immediately afterwards. Now, a couple of weeks on, after some music software crashed I appear to have lost all my system utilities files in the Utilities folder inside the Applications folder. This includes my disk Ulity File. I cannot locate them via finder and although I have certainly not deleted them, they have gone. I can't repair my permissions etc. I tried restoring the Utility folder contents from the previous OX version via Time Machine, however ( as expected) I got a message declaring the Utilities file was not the correct version.

I was able to get my iTunes streaming to my airport express last night after much frustration. I have a question though. In order for me to stream music to my stereo I have to direct my airport utilities to the express manually, and when linked to it I lose my internet access. Is this the normal routine, or should I be able to do both at once and never have to manually switch the airport utilities? After reading all the trouble people have had with the AE, I guess I should just be happy it's actually working. I started to question the purchase after some research.

I have tried:
Disk Utility
Disk Warrior
Drive Genius 2
TechTool Pro 5
When I tried to rebuild the hard drive on each one, they all gave me the result, "failed," basically, except TechTool Pro 5, which said it completed it with no problems, but obviously it had no idea what it was speaking of because the external hard drive still did not mount on the desktop. I chose basically every thing that each program offered me that might help the disk, but I think it's finally dead. I've had to rebuild it about 3 or 4 times now and it's only been a year or so...

The problem is with a mbp running Snow Leopard. I created a dual boot with win 7. I was playing around with the partitions, and at one point installed SL on both partitions, sure i did some other bone head moves that i can't remember. Now cannot remove the second partition. I think i may need a boot disk with a application to partition the HD from the disk?

Our macbook woke up with a blinking hard drive. I went to boot up with a CD and run Disk Utility, and used the install disk that came with our Mac Mini.
Instead, it says I can't install on that mac, and all options are disabled.
I didn't expect to be able to install from that disk, but why can't I even use disk utility?
Obvious answer to obvious question - I can't find the Leopard disk I used with the macbook.

I inserted the Mac OS X install disc. Went through utilities --> reset password. Problem is when I tried to save the new password it gave me this prompt: "The password you entered has not been saved for the user System Administrator(root). You may not have permission to edit this disk or a general failure has occurred." It's a 13" MacBook with leopard.
