Mac Pro :: When Creating "OS & Apps Only" Drive - What Folders To Move Or Copy

Feb 20, 2010

I have a simple two drive set up on my G5, one for data, one for Applications & the OS. I think I've left too many items on the App & OS drive, and am wondering if you can tell me what else I should move. Or put another way , what standard file or folder names should be included in the OS & App drive, and what can be safely moved to the data only drive. . I've searched around the forums, MROOGLE, but with no luck... Here's an attached screen shot of my finder. the drive named "macintosh HD" is the drive want just for OS & Apps (not sure how to imbed the image right in the posting) It's the original 160GB drive that has only 35GB of space remaining. What can be moved, and will it make my machine and apps boot more quickly?

OS X :: Hard Drive Makes Clicking Sound / Move Apps From Internal Drive To New One?

Feb 19, 2010

I have a Dual 1.8 G5 and my hard drive has started to make a clicking sound every now and then. I believe it may be on the verge of dying anyday. Since i have space to put in another internal hard drive i am planning to get a WD Black Caviar 1TB and put it in.

Now my question is how do i move all my application from the old internal drive to the new internal drive. From what i have researched it seems that using a enclosure is the way to go but all the info i have seen is referring to replacing the drive rather adding a new one.I would like to move everything to the new drive and make that a master. What is the best way to perform this task?

OS X :: External Drive As Another Folder / Move And Copy Files?

Apr 27, 2010

I have two Macs, a desktop PM G5 and a laptop Black Macbook, both running 10.5.8. Currently when using the laptop I can see and access the PMG5 and its files through my wireless connection. I'm planning on picking up an external drive, and I'd just like this confirmed, as in its access ability. If I hook up the external drive to the G5 so I can leave it there, and access its files through the G5. will my laptop also be able to access it through the G5. In other words, when I access the G5 from the laptop over wireless, will the external drive appear as just another folder and/or device on the G5 and I'll be able to move and copy files just like I already do?

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Move Apps From Tiger To Its Partitions On Same Drive?

May 19, 2012

The video card on the G5 iMac that I was using died so I bought a Mac Pro with Lion installed. I'd like to keep the apps that are on the old drive but I understand that they won't work with Lion. The old drive from the G5iMac has two partitions with Tiger on one of them and nothing on the other one. I'm considering installing Snow Leopard on the other partition since it's documented that Snow Leopard will work with the apps that I used on Tiger. Does anyone know if it is possible to transfer apps from the Tiger partition to the Snow Leopard partition? I've heard it said that the move must be from one *drive* to another--that Apple does not support the transfer of apps from one OS from one partition to another on the same drive. (The Mac Pro has 2.8 GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon processer with 3gb of RAM.)

My home folder is corrupted.  I created a new user account and it seems to be fine.  I'd like to transfer all my data files to my new account.  This is no problem with most applications, but I'm not sure what to do with Apps that save the data themselves.

MacBook Pro :: How To Move Original Files To External Drive, Not Just Copy And Delete Original

Dec 31, 2009

I've looked at some other posts that have gone over how to move files to an external drive, and they all say to use command while moving. I understand this copies the file and deletes the original, but when you make a copy and delete the original, you lose some of the original data, such as creation date, etc... This makes storage and organization more complicated than it has to be.

OS X :: Creating New User Folders For Every Log In

Jul 11, 2010

I was having the low memory available error so I deleted all unused programs ( garage band etc) I moved pics on a flash drive then deleted them ( and emptied the trash) (but whats odd is I put 6+ GB on the flash drive but only recovered 2-3 GB ?) anyway I was looking to see where all my space is and I found the users folder that has a lot of folders that look like archives of my disk, the newest one has my recent desktop and photos etc, why are these here? they take up to 14 to 35 GB each! can I delete them? they have all the pics and movies I thought I deleted ( as well as garage ban app) so when I look at the info section they all say they where created on the same day- march 18th which is the day I stupidly re-named by home, I eventually put the old name back and copied the created archive back in home and I thought all was well. since then the only thing I have noticed is a slow start up ( after log in password. Is it looking for the folder that takes so long? I have file vault turned on. sorry this is long and confusing, I am new to this type of thing- I am off warranty also

here is pic of the user folders listed ( at the bottom that can't be seen is my home folder): [URL]

OS X :: Creating Bookmark Folders?

Oct 7, 2009

I was in the organize bookmark place when i made the folder and i started dragging some bookmarks into the S folder, one at a time since it would not let me do more. Then, just as things were going according to plan, i had some bookmarks I could not drag into the folder no matter how many different ways i tried. and then to my surprise, this folder named "S" was not on the bookmark menu, even though that's where i created it to be. the folder still shows up when i go to organize but I want it to show up where all my other bookmarks are. I also want to be able to put those other links in the folder.

Applications :: Why Does Mail Keep Creating Folders

Mar 13, 2009

this is kind of an annoyance and I can't seem to find any answers online. My left column on Mail usually has 3 folders (inbox, sent, trash). That's how I like it. Every once in a while though, it creates a new folder under my email address. Why does this happen, and can I stop it? In case it helps, I only have 1 email address and it's a .me account. Also, I do send emails from my Mac, iPhone and occasionally [URL] from a work PC. I don't know if that's relevant, I just wanted to get as many facts out there as I can.

OS X :: Creating Folders In Applications Directory?

Aug 7, 2010

I'm a mac newbie coming from linux. In order to not have all applications in the /Applications top folder, I create some empty folders in the /Applications folder and move apps there (to group apps).

Reflections/questions:

It seems to be ok for me to create folders in /Applications that are owned by me without giving a password, which seems a little bit funny. (/Applications belong to the admin group as also I am in and admin group can write in /Applications. In Linux I have to to "sudo mkdir" to make folders in the corresponding folders).

Is there any problem with moving apps (owned by root) into these new folders that are owned by me?

Software :: Creating Apple Mail Folders Within The Inbox?

I've used Apple Mail for years but struggled so long with the folder structure. I would love for my multiple "Mailboxes" (folders) to go under the Inbox like such: The reason being when I create new mailboxes they go to a completely separate heading under that e-mail address. So when my searches in Apple Mail are not comprehensive, as it'll often search the Inbox without searching the other Mailboxes. This is such a simple feature yet my web searches have proved fruitless. I've also contacted my ISP Host Gator but recommend that I ask Apple or search the internet.

OS X :: Creating Folder On Dock With Related Apps

Jun 8, 2009

I'm a switcher from PC since March, and I thought I had become fairly proficient with OSX. There is a lot I don't know and never use, but I find my Mac experience to be very positive. Yesterday I discovered that I may have been using the Dock incorrectly. Here's what I did, what happened, and the obvious need for some clarification. I did not want the dock to become too busy with many app icons, so I created a folder for my favorite photo applications; Lightroom, Photoshop Elements, Bridge, and some Canon camera and printing programs. I liked the idea that I could just click on the one folder and it would fan open with all of the related apps. So, I simply dragged apps to the folder, and for months it seemed to work very well.

Yesterday I tried a Panorama feature in Photoshop Elements, and it was grayed out. So, I went to the Adobe PSE Forums and posted a message. A few very knowledgeable people answered, and we tried to troubleshoot the problem. We looked at permissions on the apps, and other stuff. At one point, I clicked on the app from within Finder, and it opened with the feature back where it belonged. I then went to the folder and by accessing there, it was gone. I'm not sure in which order this happened, but I did get a message that the app had been moved from its original location and needed to update itself. When I reported this to the export I was admonished that you can't add an app to a folder, you need to make an alias.

I trashed the folder and tried to redo it, but I recreated the same problem. So, I instead opened the applications from Finder and kept them pinned to the dock. They now work, but they clutter up the Dock. What surprised me was that in the Dock tutorials I saw on the Apple site and the other Dock related stuff I read elsewhere, it seemed as if simply dragging apps to the dock or folders on the dock was the correct procedure. If I did not do it right, what steps would I need to go through to create a folder on the Dock with related apps?

OS X :: Cannot Copy Folders (MP3s) To USB Key

Jan 4, 2010

"The operation can't be completed because you don't have permission to access some of the items." This is what I get when I try to copy a folder (album) with mp3s to my USB key. Why? I am the only user on this computer and thus the Admin. I've tried creating another account, but I get the same (!) msg there when I try to copy albums to my USB drive. I'm growing really concerned about this matter. I've repaired permissions several times and even ran "Maintenance" with OnyX, but to no avail. What the heck is all this about? I'm on SL 10.6.2.

Interestingly enough, it worked if I copied mp3 by mp3, but when it came to copying the folder, I would get that error. I even tried deleting the mp3s from that folder and copying the empty folder, but still got this error. I tried creating a guest account and copying the same folder(s) from there, but still got the error. That's when I used terminal and enabled hidden files. It turned out that all problematic folders (the ones I couldn't copy to my USB/external HD) contained ._.DS_Store (Unix Executable File). WTF? I never had any problems copying/moving these folders back and forth to USB or external drives back in Leopard, but now in SL 10.6.2 all of a sudden this crap.

It seems that I can get rid of the ._.DS file if I create a new folder and move the mp3s from the problematic folder to the new folder - that's when I will be able to copy the entire new folder without a problem. But here's the thing: only a portion of my 900+ music folders/albums contains this damn ._.DS file, which means I'd have to manually check each and every folder to eliminate the problematic ones?? What's more, today I even found the DS file in one of my Documents folders!! Which makes me really anxious - how many more folders is there that contain DS file and will thus cause problems whenever I try to make a backup by transferring stuff to my external HD??

Applications :: How To Move Aperture Folders

Jun 11, 2009

I am currently running low on disk space on my Macbook Pro and most of that is due to my large photo archive in Aperture. Right now I have my photos stored in 3 places: once on computer, once on a LaCie Disk with TimeMachine, and another time on another LaCie Disk with the Aperture Vault Backup.

So my question is, how do I move to only have my most recent and best photos on my computer and than the rest of my photos on the external hard drives.

I know there is probably some simple way, but right now I really don't know how to do it.

OS X :: Copy Folders Only But Only Duplicate Files?

Mar 9, 2010

For example, say I have a folder called Files1, and it has 10 further folders in there. And then I have another folder called Files1 too, which includes updates (new files in) just 3 of the folders.

Is it possible to just drag the new Files1 folder over the old one BUT it just copies over the 'duplicate' files and folders? And leave the others untouched? (bit like how it works when FTP'ing files to a server).

Default behaviour seems to completely overwrite the folder - which is not what I want.

OS X :: How To Copy / Move Files With Only One Window

Jan 5, 2009

NOTE: I am doing this with Tiger. I have read complaints about how Windows Explorer is better than OS X Finder. One popular complaint is that it is impossible to copy/move a file from one folder to another folder outside the current one without two windows as Finder doesn't have a split window setup like Explorer. This simply isn't true. Mac OS X simply handles this differently than Windows. Heres how...

1. Open a window and go to the folder that you want to copy/move files to.
2. Drag that folder to your sidebar (+T)
3. Navigate to the folder that contains what you want to copy/move.
4. Drag your file(s) to the folder you just put in your sidebar to move them or hold 'option' and drag to copy them.
5. If you don't want the folder you copied to permanently in your sidebar just drag it out.

If your needs are more robust and you want to copy/move between many folders you can drag as many folders to your sidebar as you can fit. Plus your folders will be just as you left them when you go back to them (with the exception of the view). The sidebar doesn't have to be permanent and is your friend .
