I would like to create a Smart folder that only has applications & utilities in a sub-folder.
This will be similar to the default applications folder that shows in the dock, but without all the extra files & folders - just a list of applications.
I can do this by esily by just having a smart folder of applications showing only type=application.
However, I would still like to have utilities in a sub-folder.
If thats not possible, then it would be OK to have 2 seperate smart folders, 1 for apps excluding utilities & 1 for utilities only.
Is there some way in the smart folder options i can exclude a sub directory?

I am trying to hook a macbook pro up to a windows workgroup. I follow the directions to go into utilities and then Directory Access. The Directory Access is not there.

I received my macbook this afternoon and am currently trying to network my old dell with it so I can transfer my files. However, I cannot find the 'directory access' which is supposed to be in my utilities file- I have 'directory utility' but this has nowhere for me to enter the name of my windows workgroup (as per networking guide says I should) and thus cannot enter it into finder>go>connect to server!

I recently upgraded to 10.6.4 but stupidly did not create a back up immediately afterwards. Now, a couple of weeks on, after some music software crashed I appear to have lost all my system utilities files in the Utilities folder inside the Applications folder. This includes my disk Ulity File. I cannot locate them via finder and although I have certainly not deleted them, they have gone. I can't repair my permissions etc. I tried restoring the Utility folder contents from the previous OX version via Time Machine, however ( as expected) I got a message declaring the Utilities file was not the correct version.

I'm tired of having to jump thru hoops to replace files in my Utilities folder with updated versions. First I have to move the old file to the trash, but I have to enter my password. Then I copy the new file to the Utilities folder but, again, I have to enter my password. Much less user friendly than older versions of Mac OSX (and even Classic). I'm guessing it has to do with security, though I can replace files in the Applications folder without so much effort.I'm guessing the permissions of the Utilities folder have to be changed but changed to what? I want to be able to simply drag an updated application file to the Utilities folder and replace the old one without so much effort.

Our macbook woke up with a blinking hard drive. I went to boot up with a CD and run Disk Utility, and used the install disk that came with our Mac Mini.
Instead, it says I can't install on that mac, and all options are disabled.
I didn't expect to be able to install from that disk, but why can't I even use disk utility?
Obvious answer to obvious question - I can't find the Leopard disk I used with the macbook.

So my father got a new Macbook and I was trying to transfer over some of my files. I turned on file sharing (on my own computer, MBP) and accidentally removed myself from the permissions list for the Applications folder. Stupid, I know.
Now I can't access anything: Any application, System Pref., Time Machine, etc.......
Applecare's solution is to reinstall Leopard, not sure where the hell the disk is now. But I know I still have it. Is this the only course of action? Would repairing my permissions solve it? (using the install disk to access it)

It appears that the Library folder that is in the Home Folder (e.g./Users/Home/Liberary)has been made invisible in OS 10.7.x. However I have seen it because after converting samples Logic showed me the folder and its contents. I would very much like to move the samples from their present location in this folder on the startup disk to the EXS 24 samples folder on the external RAID array that is dedicated to this purpose - - but I don't know how to make the Library folder visible.

I have recently tried to run Onyx which has identified a problem which requires me to run disc utilities from the start up disc. The Snow leopard disc I have only appears to offer Install option.
Q1 Have I missed something?
Q2 Otherwise should I try to run Disc Utilities from an earlier version of OSX

I was wondering if it is okay to move applications in the "Applications" folder to the "Utilities" folder. Does it actually make any difference? Will everything work just as fine as if it was in the "Applications" folder?
I am asking because there are apps like Automator, which I never use, but would like to keep. And since Automator comes with OS X, it makes it look like as if I shouldn't remove it.

I don't know what happened, I was using my laptop fine this morning, this afternoon when I opened it up again and tried to open my applications on the dock, they all have big question marks on them. So I went to my applications folder and there is nothing there. I have even lost itunes and safari and all the utilities that comes with apple. I still have all my movie collections and folders and pictures though. It's just my applications that I can't find. I did a little reading and found out that I might have to "repair the permissions" but I don't have "disk utility" to do that with cause it's not there. Is repairing the permission the solution? And if so, is there another software that can do that for me? I have a macbook unibody, running os 10.5.8.

I jsut did a fresh install. wanted to use my SL DVD but the MBP i5 refused to star with it so I used the original DVD (10.5) and upgraded with the SL DVD to 10.6. However after the initial SL Installation, it tried from the SL DVD and this failed. I did a manual restart, starting from the HD and everything ran fine. however today I note there is a locked file on the HD named Mac OS X Install Data. It contains 181 .pkg files. Now I suppose this should have been moved or deleted as part of the install process. Can I move them to a file where they belong?

Within a user account, is there a way to prevent someone from opening a folder (in documents or images, for example) without a password? Ideally, anyone can see the folder, but when someone double clicks to enter the folder, a password pop up would appear before continuing.

My question is, how can i set up a system by which remotely, I can login to access JUST the public folder on my mini. Is this possible? If not, what else could I do that would allow something like this.

I was playing around with access rights on folders on my ReadyNas drive. I wanted to restrict access to a folder on the drive, and subsequently accessed the file info window. The only available user was "everyone", and I changed the rights to "No access" (dont know if this is what is says in english, as I have a Swedish version of MAC OS X 10.5). Anyway, after this, I am unable to change it back, so the folder is locked, I can not open it, even as administrator. I cant erase it.Nothing. What can I do to regain control of this folder and the files within it again?

My MacBook pro (snow leopard) has had a major issue and the screen boots up with big colour blocks on it. Rendering it useless.
I've plugged another MacBook in via FireWire and it can see my shared folders. So it looks like its booting up and hard drive may be okay.
However I have vital files in my desktop and desktop is not shared, so i don't have permission.
Us there anyway to get to these files sobi can back them up before I hand the laptop over to Apple to be fixed. Basically I have some really important documents I badly need. It's my fault for not backing up

Error message: "The folder 'Downloads' could not be opened because you do not have sufficient access privileges." I get this error message both on my computer and in time machine. I sent in my comp to apple they replaced the hard drive to my surprise; I created a brand new user account without reloading any info off time machine. Then once that account was created I opened the migration assistant utility and restored certain information off of time machine. I then deleted the 'new' account. Now I'm on the restored account and I do not have access to particular folders on the macintosh hd. in time machine I am blocked from accessing them as well. I googled a lot and some say its a MAC address, but I'm not so sure that's the case for my particular situation. Lot of important files are locked up that I need to access asap!

I am running snow leopard 10.6.2 on a imac G% and we work on a network from a PC external hard drive. We are suddenly having problems with folders, whereby if a new folder is made from the mac (on the external hard drive) then no one but that mac that made the folder has access privileges. Even our other mac can't seem to access the folder, so if any mac makes a folder no one can access it.
