OS X :: Mute Single Window / Tab?
Jun 15, 2010I use safari, but also use FireFox or Chrome occasionally, I'm just wondering if anyone knows how to mute audio on a single window or tab on any of these browsers.

View 2 RepliesI just reformatted my system and installed all software again. My config is: Lion 10.7.3, Safari 5.1.5.
In the past, when I opened Safari, even a single window opened in a Tab, now when I open just one window (i.e. only one Tab), it doesnt open in a Tab, , only when I do a Command + T to add another Tab, does the first window convert into a Tab. The resulting problem is that if I want to drag one window to another (where the first one has only one Tab), I cant do that, since it doesnt appear as a Tab, which means there is nothing to select and drag to another window. Since upgrading to Lion, whenever I open a message with the same header and sender as a previous one, it puts them all together in a single window. How can I get Mail to only show the latest in the window when I select the message? I receive daily alerts from various services, and I don't want to scroll through them to just see the one message.

I mostly use Preview.app (on Lion 10.7.3) to read and annotate relatively large pdf documents (articles, reports, etc.). While working on a given project I tend to have many pdf files open at the same time. I personally would like to have all of the pdfs I use open in a single window, so I have Preview set to "Open all files in one window" (Preferences > General). This setup initially worked very well since it allows me view all of my open documents in the sidebar (similar to tabs in a browser window). The problem is that when I switch from one pdf to another, the position of the pdfs (i.e., the page I was on when I switched to another pdf) is not preserved. This seemingly defeats the purpose of having this functionality in Preview,is this the intended behavior of this setting, or is this a bug? In either case, is anyone aware of a fix for this? I just want the documents I'm reading to preserve their positions when switching between them when opened in a single window.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a late 2006 Mac Pro 3Ghz dual. Recently the volume dropped down to nothing and when I access the control panel, I see the mute button checked on all outputs except the digital (the one I have never used). All inputs are also muted and I cannot uncheck any of them. The little volume indicator is sitting in the lower middle of my screen and won't go away.
I have tried:
Zapping PRAM
repairing permissions
trashing the sound pref
using a different account
multiple restarts and shut downs
unplugged and re-plugged both the headphones and line out
And none of it has worked. The sound indicator shows up with the startup screen and never goes away and I have no sound. If I drag the volume slider up, it just goes back down. I am guessing this is a failing motherboard, being that I have lost my "A" RAM slot, but I really hope not. This is going to be unbearable to live with.
When I reboot, the audio is muted. The slider audio from the top finder window is totally greyed out and when I goto system preferences it seems to lag and stall out. After many attempts I am able to get into the sound prefences and see that everything else is muted and I am unable to change anything.Â
I am assuming it is trying to use the optical audio or something like that. I try to open the audio Midi app in utilities but I do not see much options to change. I am not sure what to change. Â
I had the similar problem with a laptop that went to mute due to the optical audio jack getting messed up so it would default to optical audio. However, pluging headphones in I could still hear audio. On my mac pro the headphone jack does not work either.  Â
After trying to reset the PRAM and SMC settings, disk permissions I am still having the problem.
I'm about to do a fresh install of Lion on a spare Hard drive and see if them problem is there present. I have added a Blu-ray burner to the lower bay in my mac pro. Could this cause a problem with audio?

Recently I was watching Netflix on my air when static started coming out of the speakers. I paused the movie, shut down anything I had running and it was still static just not as loud. I turned off my Macbook, turned it on and nothing. It has been stuck on mute for a few days now.
Note: I've was not using headphones when this occurred. I had tried plugging in headphone and still no sound, I unplugged them, no sound.

The normal output volume is saved when you turn your mac off, but for some reason the input volume and sound effects are reset to mute when I turn it back on, why is this? Does anybody else have this problem its just incredibly tedious especially when you go to talk to someone on ichat only to find they cant hear and after about 10 seconds you realise and have to open up system preferences and change everything, also it means I don't hear when my mail arrives too.

I like to use my iMac 24" at odd times and wish to mute the startup chime (or at least make it quieter) so I won't wake up my spouse. Apple Tech support helped me do that when I had 10.5.8 but they deleted several cache files buried deep within the OS. My tech support has expired and I wonder if any of you can help?
View 18 Replies View RelatedWhenever my MacBook's sound is on mute and the computer wants to play a sound, the speaker has this little click noise.
For example, I mute the sound and go to trash a file. It trashes normally, but at the beginning, the speakers click (almost like they want to play that empty trash noise, but cannot because it is mute).
I can't recall what I need to accomplish this, but I'd like to be able to mute my internal speakers in the event that my headphones come out on accident (my headphones won't securely fasten into the mac, thus have the tendency to fall out).

I was using it for a long time StartupSoundPrefPane11b3 with no problems, but this week I had to erase my hd and restore the disk from time machine. Since then I can't use anymore your program, I checked the boxes "Turn on startup volume control" and "Mute" and turn on the lock. After turn off and on again I get the startup sound. I went to system preferences, and "Startup Sound" program but the "Mute" checkbox is not active anymore. I'm running on a Mid 2007 iMac with 10.7.3 Lion software.

Sometime in the last week the 'p' key on my MacBook Pro (2008) keyboard started to behave like the "mute" key, so that any time I type 'p' it additionally mutes/unmutes the volume and pops up the transparent volume indicator on the screen. This is highly aggravating but I have yet to figure out what caused this or how to correct this. I've verified that the Keyboard Shortcuts in the Keyboard preference pane doesn't have anything for mute (I don't see 'mute' as an option there at all).

Anyone know of a free menu bar utility to mute the volume, like a one click icon up there? MenuStrip is way too expensive at $30 for the one feature.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have been having this issue forever and want to do something about it now. Whenever the sound is mute on my notebook, and there should be sound playing (Ex.: Startup Chime), instead I get a LOUD pop noise. I understand the whole thing with the sound chip powering down to save battery life, but that requires the speakers to be un-muted. In my case, they are mute, and never get un-muted. What do you guys think. Logic Board/Speaker System Replacement?

Is there anyway to mute incoming audio when using iChat video?
I'd rather not mute the entire system as I would just like to mute incoming audio when I'm on webcam with my girlfriend. When I was on my PC and used AIM for webcam, there was that option.
Have read all the threads I can find and tried all the fixes, with no joy. Last posts were end of last year, '11. Anyone got any more info since then?

View 2 Replies View RelatedApple revealed a minor tweak to the iPad hardware when preorders began Friday morning, with a button previously designated for audio muting changed to a "screen rotation lock." As first noticed by Jim Dalrymple at The Loop, the switch, located just above the volume controls on the right side of the device, is now devoted to locking the screen orientation in its current state. Previously, the switch was used to mute the iPad. One of the features Apple has touted with the iPad is that it can be used from any orientation the user sees fit. The new feature will prevent users from having the screen rotate unexpectedly as they use the device while browsing the Web, reading an e-book, or accomplishing any other task on the 9.7-inch screen. "There isn't even a single orientation," Jony Ive, senior vice president of design with Apple, said in the iPad's initial promotional video. "There's no up, there's no down, there's no right or wrong way of holding it. I don't have to change myself to fit the product. It fits me."
Like with the iPhone and iPod touch, the internal accelerometer of the iPad automatically adjusts the display to fit the orientation by which the user is holding the device. The iPad allows even more functionality than with the previous products, granting users the ability to turn the iPad completely upside down, with the home button up top, if they so choose. Because the iPad has a focus on reading e-books and newspapers, many users will undoubtedly use the device as they would a physical book or newspaper -- objects that are sometimes read by users laying on their side. The screen rotation lock would prevent the device from shifting as a user moves around. Additional physical inputs on the device are the on/off and sleep/wake button, volume up/down controls, and the home button. Apple began accepting preorders for the iPad Friday morning. Purchases for the device, scheduled to ship April 3 for the WiFi-only model, are limited to two per customer. [View this article at AppleInsider.com]
my headphones will only go about halfway into the headphone jack and the volume is stuck on mute. it looks like there is something sticking out inside of the headphone jack.
