OS X Mavericks :: Time Machine Unable To Select Disk Following Upgrade (10.7.5)

Sep 1, 2014

I have a 21" iMac and a Mac Mini, both of which I upgraded to Maverick a week ago. Since then, I have not been able to get Time Machine to backup. I can connect to the disk through my network, but Time Machine does not recognize it exists. I have gone through User and Groups, I have checked everything I can think of through System Preferences, and nothing has worked, including Sharing. I have another computer and am able to backup it, after programming the mini.

MacBook Pro :: Enabling Single Click+select To Drag Windows On Trackpad Of MBP

May 5, 2012

Before I formatted and reinstalled Lion on my MBP, I could select a window by tapping on its top bar and drag it using single finger on my trackpad. After reinstalling it, I am unable to do so. I have investigated the trackpad features in System Preferences, but it shows only the three-finger drag option. How do I get to select + drag a windown using single tap.

OS X Mavericks :: MacBook Pro Only Turns On In Recovery - Disk Utility Can't Repair Disk

Sep 12, 2014

Macbook Pro running on OSX Mavericks is having problems.

Today I turned my Mac on, and it started up with a loading wheel and a loading bar. When the loading bar finished, the Mac turned itself off. I tried many times, same happened every time. I then went into OSX Recovery, started repairing Macintosh HD, but the error message saying "Disk Utility can't repair Macintosh HD" came up and now I don't now what to do.

Is there any way I can back up my files in this situation? Is there any way I can repair the disk without having to erase all data and reinstalling OSX? Or do I really need to bring it to a Apple Store for repair?

I have a MacBook Pro running Mavericks.

Recently I noticed that if I run Check Disk in Disk Utility, all the process works correctly but at the end it doesn't tell me that everything is correct (in green).

On the contrary, if I run it in recovery mode, (reboot w cmd-r), it works correctly to the end with the correct green result at the end.

I am aware and have been using the "command+drag" in order to select different texts in different areas; however, I am now unable to do so. When I hold down the command button, and drag over different texts in different places, the highlight instantly disappears. I am only thus, able to highlight one portion of texts at one time.

OS X :: Disk Utility Partitioning Does Not Work

May 11, 2008

I currently have Leopard installed on my MBP. A while back I installed Windows XP Pro SP2 via bootcamp. I have a 130GB Leopard partition, and a 18GB Windows partition. Now I want to add another partition, splitting the Leopard partition into two. I want to add a 20GB partition. I have cleaned my computer, and there is plenty of free space to do this. Currently 70GB free. So I go into disk utility, and try to partition. Doesnt work. Says that it failed to verify, repair disk. Then i boot from Tiger install disk, open disk utility, and verify disk. Says there are errors so i repair disk. Says that it repair worked. Verified again just to be sure, no problems. Go back into leopard and disk utility to try and partition, still does not work, I get the same error.

OS X :: Won't Work With Disk Utility Error

Aug 26, 2009

I clicked "Verify Disk" and i got that, the other two options worked. I read up on this on Apple's site but I am not having any other issues than the notice. I was told to run Disk Utility ever so often to keep my mac fast. I just happened to do it today and I got that. I am trying to avoid having to do ANY sort of reformat.. I don't have any means of backup. Like I said I am not having any other problems. I am able to restart and log in without any problems. Should I be worried about this since there is no other issues besides the notice itself?

OS X :: Unable To Burn ISO's To DVD Using Disk Utility

Jul 20, 2009

It all started last week when I tried burning an ISO to a blank Memorex DVD-R. When I inserted the DVD it would eject the CD over and over again no matter how many times I tried. The same thing would happen if I used a Memorex CD-R. Now these CD's worked in the past without any issues, and seem to work just fine on my other computers.

I decided to go out and buy a different brand of DVD-R's at Office Depot, thinking the laptop just wasn't really into these DVD's anymore. I ended up buying TDK DVD-R's. The computer seemed to like these more because it didn't eject them when I placed them into the drive.

OS X :: Won't Work With External Iomega HD And Disk Utility Error

Dec 3, 2009

I bought a 1TB Iomega Prestige drive, it worked great for a few months. Started making loud clicking sounds. Iomega sent me a replacement drive (refurbished).

I am using it as my time machine backup in Leopard, so it was really just a matter of plugging it in, formating it with the OSX file system and setting it up for time machine.

When attempting to format from Disk Utility, I get an error (see screenshot).

(Additional info: I can access it and format it without any problems from Windows 7 based PC).

OS X Mavericks :: Disk Utility Refuses To Copy 164 GB To 318 GB Volume

Aug 29, 2014

I use Disk Utility (stand alone, on a USB key) to make backups of my system disk to an external disk and then transfer it from my home system to a MacBook and vice-versa when I need to travel.

Recently, I upgraded from 10.9.2 to 10.9.3 and, not long later, to 10.9.4. In the same period, I also had an increase (not a very big one, just a few GB, less than 15) in the occupied space of that system disk. The current amount of data on it is 164.64 GB.

I'm not sure if my problem comes from the sub-version upgrade, from the increase in data size, from both, or from something else. The home computer is an iMac with a 318.88 GB internal disk. The MacBook has a 500 GB internal disk. The partitions used on the external disk to make bootable backups are 400 GB big.

I can backup both internal disks to the external partitions (and boot on the resulting external disk when I check that it is usable). I can also copy the external backups to the MacBook system disk and boot on the result without problem.

But, recently, Disk Utility has started to refuse copying the content of the external backup partitions to the internal disk of the home system. It says there is insufficient space on the target volume. If the error message is correct, it means that I cannot backup 164.64 GB of data on a 318.88 GB volume!

For the record, the external backup partitions are OK when verified with SOS.

OS X Mavericks :: Disk Utility - Restore Failure / Not Enough Space

Sep 3, 2014

I just used Disk Utility to make a backup of a MBA (65GB) onto a 500GB external drive (Restore from internal HDD to external HDD). I then reformatted the internal hard disk and proceeded to restore my backup (external HDD to internal HDD). I soon received an error message stating "Restore Failure - not enough space". I guess that means Disk Utility backups are a one-way operation, since you can't restore from a larger drive to a smaller one? Is there something I am overlooking? I ended up using Carbon Copy Cloner to do the job, but I'm wondering how (if?) restoring from a larger backup drive is possible using Disk Utility?

OS X Mavericks :: Cannot Partition Or Create Volume In Disk Utility

Jun 23, 2014

I have a 3 TB disk that I used for video files that I now want to use for backup. So I wanted to erase and partition the drive to wipe it clean. So after going into Disk Utility and "trying" to erase and partition the drive, it now only shows the drive and no volumes.I cannot create or partition volumes. I tried verifying and repairing the disc but that didn't do anything. The only buttons available are Verify, Info and Burn. What do I do to use the drive again?

OS X Mavericks :: Create A Bootable Clone Using Disk Utility

Aug 22, 2014

Both are formatted Max OS Extended (Journaled)So, what am I doing wrong? Also, what advantages, if any, are there in using CCC or SD instead of the free DU?

OS X Mavericks :: (10.9.4) Files Show In Disk Utility But Not In Finder

Sep 3, 2014

Having trouble with my backup drive. It's a 1TB WD My Passport Ultra.

The drive mounts in Finder, but is extremely slow. In Disk Utility, the drive shows the correct disk space usage and number of files; but in Finder it only shows the folders/files at the root level of the drive, and each has a size of zero bytes with no items:

What is happening? How can I access the data (it's obviously still there if DU shows the files) and (possibly) fix this?

OS X :: Unable To Create The Necessary Partition In Disk Utility

Nov 19, 2009

I have a Mac Mini and on the internal drive I have Snow Leopard installed on the first partition and I'd like to install Snow Leopard Server on the same drive on another partition (I'm new to Mac, this is my only machine and my only drive, and this is only for testing purposes, so don't bother with stupid questions about why etc).

The problem I have is that I can't seem to create the necessary partition in Disk Utility. I have shrinken the Snow Leopard partition to get some free space and I've created a second partition for Server but for some reason I can't choose the options button to select GUID. The button is grayed out, see attached image.

What am I doing wrong? Or is it not possible to have two OS partitions on the same internal drive?

MacBook Pro :: Unable To Repair Disk Using Its Utility

Mar 14, 2012

Lately, my MacBook Pro (mid 2010) started to slow down even with over 60% disk space is empty and max RAM is installed. It gets slow when using hungry programs such as Photoshop CS5.

I used the disk utility first aid and fixed all permissions that were shown with errors. When scanning the disk, I received the message that my disk is corrupt and I need to fix by restarting with command+R keys pressed until the apple symbol is displayed. When the next window shows up, choose disk utility and go from there to fix the disk.

When I performed that, I let go of the Command+R keys after the apple logo came up, the only thing that came up after that was a grey circle with a diagonal line through it and a spinning clock.
