OS X Mavericks :: Automatic Conversion Of File Folders To IBooks?
Jun 28, 2014
I just purchased a new MacBook Pro with Mavericks and transferred my files from an earlier laptop with an earlier OP. I had two files of MS Word documents, each file a title ending in "Book". Mavericks apparently automatically converted both file folders to iBooks, and now when I double-click on them the Terminal launches.
How can I get my folders back with their MS Word content?
In Mavericks, I transferred all of my books from iTunes to iBooks (File > Move Books from iTunes). However, none of the books appear in my bookshelf/library when viewing in iBooks. I tried buying a new book while in iTunes, it downloaded, but it does not appear in my library either. These books are accessible in iBooks via a search but cannot be seen in the library.

I have a dot ibooks file created in ibooks Author. I have used Export to put it in a folder on my Mac (Mavericks) and then used Add to Library to put the dot ibooks file into iBooks. It appears in iBooks on the Mac and I can open it and read it. It does not automatically synch with connected ipad. I have tried putting it into a "Collection" and making sure that "Synch Collections" is checked but it still does not automatically synch. What am I doing wrong? How can I get iBooks on Mac to synch with iBooks on iPad?
An iBook purchased text book no longer displays diagrams so I have tried to restore a previous backup but when I open my iBook library and then enter Time Machine it opens a Finder window for the Desktop, if I then navigate to iBooks app I just get info on the app no access to content. I am using a late 2012 iMac running OSX Mavericks 10.9.4.
I am trying to convert an .mkv file using handbrake, I am trying to convert it to a mp4, but it will only convert the first four seconds of video, than output it, saying that "your handbrake que is done" Problem is, its no where near done. The video is over an hour and a half long.
I have a wmv file of my nephew's college senior recital. Took it with a Flip video when I was using a Windows computer. Now, I'm using exclusively Macs with Yosemite and can't view the video. Is there a way to convert a wmv file to a Mac format?
I've got the flip4Mac that allows WMV files to play in Quicktime, but it doesn't work too well, so I was wondering if there's something free that I can use to convert a WMV file to AVI, or MPEG, or anything that works normally with Quicktime.
I'm using QuarkXpress 8.3 to try to convert a print file for a magazine into an HTML version of the file. (We've been converting to PDF's but my boss wants to try HTML now.) When I try to convert the file to HTML, Quark crashes.
The file is 21 2-page-spreads. I've tried duplicating the layout and converting it to a web page in the process and I've tried just converting it to a web file. It crashes either way.
The work-around that I've come up with is to make 21 copies of the file and then delete all but one layer in each file so that each layer is held in a separate file. That keeps it from crashing but now nothing is connected. They aren't even in the same project now.
Everytime I try to convert old Quicken data files so I can use the new Quickens Essentials I get the message: "There was an error installing and launching the Quicken File Exchange Utility." So I can't launch Quicken Essentials until I can convert the old data.

I have 4 drives on my mac pro and tons of folders, some with sub folders. I need a searchable listing of all folders and sub folders to consolidate, re-organize, etc. I don't mind buying a utility but would like something that can do all of the above and either let me search and organize the list or let me dump it into Excel.
Is there any way to set up one of my external drives to clone the behavior of my main drive? For example, I have a mac mini with 2 main drives, and I have 3 external HDs (one of which is for Time Machine). However, Time Machine is a bit annoying to have on all the time, so I am looking for a different option.
Here's what I need to do: I use one of my main HDs as my music drive (I'm a musician). I end up creating my music projects there and then back them up by manually transfering them to my xHDs. This process takes a long time because the files are huge and I don't do it after every project, so I move over a lot of GBs when I do this.
Is there any way to set things up where when I create a project (or any file) in my main HD that it automatically copies in real time to one of my xHDs?
Had a problem with finding back files I just worked on. E.g. I was preparing an email with attachment. I would amend or create a file, save it somewhere. Then when I wanted to insert a file the dialog box would dump the file frustratingly right down below under the 'No Date' heading. I tried disabling the automatic time zone setting and it appears to have resolved the problem for now.
How can I set up an automatic transfer of an email message to a folder? For example, all email messages that arrive from a certain retailer that are automatically moved to a folder for that retailer?

I have a Mac Air running Mavericks on a HFS partition and Windows 7 on a BOOTCAMP NTFS partition. I have some files that I want to read/write from/to both systems. Since OS X can't write NTFS and Windows can't write HFS either, and I don't want to use any 3rd-party tools/drivers, in OS X, I copy those files from NTFS to its HFS partition, make changes, then switch to Windows and sync them back to NTFS.
The problem is, after I copied a file from NTFS to HFS in OS X, it seemed ok. But when I switched to Windows, the very copied file in HFS partition had its size changed (bigger) although I didn't make any changes to it in OS X yet. This happens to almost every file I copied, text and binary. For those text files, I tried to open it with EditPlus in Windows and EditPlus reports the correct size on the status bar.
I would like to direct my Documents, Pictures, and "Other" to 3 folders in my downloads folder upon downloading them, either with Safari, with Finder, Folder Actions, Automator, or with any other free tool that does not take up too much CPU load.
i'm a recent mac convert and i have no idea how to convert "VIDEO_TS" folders that come from dvds into a single movie file (preferably .avi). does anybody have any suggestions on what software is best suited for this scenario?
On my previous version of 10.6.8 when ever I opened any folder it would tell me along the bottom of the folder how many files were in that folder and how many MB were left available on the hard drive that the folder came from?
I'm trying to copy folders from my Macbook Air's hard drive to my Google Drive app. The folders are newer versions of what's on Google Drive - ie it contains much the same stuff but some extra files and maybe some updated files.
However, the only options it gives me when copying are "Replace," "Don't Replace" or "Stop" (and from what I can tell, those latter two do exactly the same thing - or should I say, don't do the same thing... I mean they both just cancel the copy).
I was sure there used to be an option "Merge" which skips anything identical and replaces only new or edited files. This is the exact thing I want to do! But is that option gone? Or is there a way I can get it back? (I can't find any way to bring it back in the system preferences).
I could just hit "Replace" (and I will in the meantime), but there are two problems with that: 1) that will get annoying when files and folders are large; 2) more pressingly, that will muck up the sharing permissions. There's a particular sub-folder that I currently have shared on Google Drive with specific people, and I don't want to override that folder with one that's identical in everything except the all-important sharing settings.

I restarted my macbook pro (10.5.6) last night after really slow internet speeds, and when it booted back up all my desktop folders disappeared. I can't even find a single file name anymore anywhere on the harddrive.
Apple support said they've seen the desktop directory glitch with the finder, but we could not reverse whatever happend and they suggested I spend $100 bucks on Disc Warrior.
How am I going to find about 1700 files????? My time machine drive stopped backing up two months ago, ggggrrrrrrr -right when I needed it eh?!
Does anyone have any ideas what I can try to get back the file names and folders?
I know the data is still on the drive, just with no allocations.
I've repaired all disc permissions 3 times-it keeps having to repair them everytime I reboot.Terry
I'm a recent switcher, and of course would never voluntarily go back to a PC. Love everything about the Mac for the most part.
One thing that has bugged me: In Windows File Explorer, when browsing files, all the folders are at the top (in alpha order), then the files are sorted below that in alpha order.
In Finder, the folders are mixed in so everything is alpha all together.
Can one itunes library.itl file be used for music in two different itunes media files? I have an Air. Want to have music in MP3 format on the Air and the same music in Lossless format on a large external HD. Would like same playlists etc for both types. Lossless takes up too much room on the Air but for playing tunes on the road, MP3 is fine. Want to keep same music as Lossless for archiving and for playing on very good speakers at times; would be kept on the external HD. Would like to have the same playlists, ratings, etc., for music that is in both MP3 and Lossless format. For example, rating Dylan's Blood on the Tracks album as a 5 for both the tracks that are in MP3 format (that live on the Air) and the same tracks in Lossless format (that reside on the external HD). I realize I could have separate iTunes folders on the Air and the Ext HD but then would have to duplicate all the data on playlists, ratings, etc. for the two independent iTunes folders.
When I expand the Sent folder in Mail (directly below inbox), all my email folders from my yahoo mail account are there plus Sent.I also have all the same folders listed below that under my email address including sent and sent messages. Some outgoing messages are in "Sent" folder and some in "Sent Messages" folder. Not sure how this happened but I can not delete the folders under sent. I am hesitant to delete the Sent folder.
