OS X Mavericks :: Randomly Can't Ping DNS Name Without FQDN

Sep 12, 2014

My office is setup that we are using a Mac Mini running OS x 10.9 with the Server plug-in (DHCP, DNS, File) and all users are either on a MacBook Pro or Air running OS x 10.9.  We are randomly seeing users unable to access our shared folders or be able to print.  When this occurred on my own machine today, I ran a number of tests.

I was not able to ping the printer or server by its base DNS name.  If I added the FQDN to the devices, I was able to ping them without issue.  Going into the Network settings, I can see that DHCP provided DNS server and domain name correctly.  If we then trust toggle the network connection off and on, it immediately starts working again.  The triggering of the network interface fixing the issues points me to thinking the issue is on the client side and not the Mac Mini server.

Jun 2, 2014

Why my iMac (27-inch, Mid 2011) has suddenly began randomly freezing up?All working great since I got it but recently I am having a consistent problem with it ceasing up. As a result I took action and restored it to factory defaults over the weekend thinking this would resolve the problem but unforuantely after 2 days without issue the problem has re-surfaced.

Jul 1, 2014

I Fired up my computer this morning and the icons disappeared, also the applications folder.  I rebooted.  Same thing.  Rebooted again.  random icons appear, never the app folder.  Rebooted.  The trash can icon is broken apart and scattered along the dock.  No other icons.  What should I do?

OS X Mavericks :: Desktop Icons Are Randomly Blinking?

Jun 4, 2014

I just replaced the original 750GB drive on my MacBook Pro with a SanDisk SD6SB2M512G1022I SSD.  It's much faster, and I still have tons of open space.

But every once in a while the desktop folder icons disappear and then reappear.  What could be causing this?  Is there something wrong with the drive?  Could the copying process have corrupted something in Mavericks?

OS X Mavericks :: IMac Freezing After Every 2-4 Days (randomly)

Jun 29, 2014

I recently bought a 2014 iMac (21.5) inch 16GB machine. I'm going batty with it randomly freezing (beach ball) once every 2-4 days for no apparent reason. I've even looked at console logs and can't figure out. I've resetted SMC/PV(whatever), even reinstalled Mavericks (using a clean bootable drive). We use the iMac for two main purposes: Plex Media streaming (once a day really) and we use Juniper VPN to connect to our corporate network (which explains why you see juniper there)

OS X Mavericks :: Mouse Cursor Randomly Disappears From Screen

Jun 1, 2014

I have bought 2 new 27" iMacs running Mavericks. I've got two problems. When opening, changing and saving JPGs in Photoshop Elements 6, the thumbnail disappears and only a generic JPG icon shows. This happens randomly. I read that PSE6 is OK on Mavericks. I don't see the problem with GIMP or Lightzone, but I would like to be able to use PSE. Second, my mouse cursor randomly disappears from the screen from time to time.

OS X Mavericks :: IMessage On MacBook Pro Randomly Stopped Working

Sep 10, 2014

I recently purchased a Macbook Pro 15" for college. I set everything up and it was working perfect until a few days ago. When I try to send a message on my macbook the person's name I am sending it to is blue for a second but quickly changes to red but I know they are using iMessage because I am iMessaging them off of my iPhone. Also, when I try to facetime someone from my macbook it works perfectly and I can receive facetimes too.

Some of the fixes I tried:

Logging out of iMessage on iPhone and then logging back in

Deleting preference files (This is a huge confusion for me, I simply don't have the files. Ex:  com.apple.imservice.iMessage

I've tried editing the preferences on my macbook and iphone . I recently switched from my 5c to a 4s because water damage completely ruined my 5c.

MacBook Pro :: OS X Mavericks (10.9.4) External Drive Randomly Disconnects

Aug 24, 2014

I have a external SATA drive that was used on my old Windows laptop. The interface for the drive is USB 3.0. Whenever i try to view my files on the drive, the drive randomly disconnects, and notifications pop up saying that the drive was not ejected properly.

Also the drive has been reformatted to a Mac format, but it still continues to do this.

MacBook Pro :: OS X Mavericks (10.9.4) Trackpad And Screen Freezes Randomly

Sep 10, 2014

I got a new Macbook Pro Retina (mid-2014) a few weeks ago and the trackpad and screen randomly freeze even when the only thing I have open is Safari. In other words, it doesn't feel like my computer has a 2.6 GHz Processor and 8 GB 1600 Mhz Memory. My downloads folder also constantly has the loading bar under it; it goes away when I remove it from the dock and replace it, but appears again after downloading one thing.

This is really frustrating when I got a new Macbook so that I wouldn't have to deal with these types of problems. They're all issues that I never encountered with my Macbook Air (mid-2011).

Applications :: Can I Get Rid Of The Ping From ITunes

Sep 2, 2010

When I right click Ping in iTunes it only gives me the option to "open in new window".

I'd like to get rid of it all together. I don't care what friends are listening to nor do I care what artists are up to. This feature is completely useless.

How about something useful like offering Apple Lossless or give me a way to download music as it's meant to be heard.

OS X :: Ding Or Ping Sound From Mbp?

Dec 9, 2009

I've had my MBP since June and occasionally I hear a DING or PING sound. I usually can't see or find any reason for it, though today I had a message from MSN Messenger that someone wanted to add me to her contact list.

I have no idea what the sound indicates, but it does seem to be happening more frequently.

I tried to do a search but nothing came up.

At the moment I am open minded about Ping, so I might give it a try. But I do have a question.. For those who have activated an account.. Does it display your entire library of music you downloaded? Or does it just display who your favorite artists are and what your favorite songs are? I wasn't sure if you get to choose what or how info is displayed.

OS X :: Airport / Ethernet Connects But Can't Ping Router

Jul 10, 2009

My iBook G4 is having network issues. Since waking from sleep, it will connect to my Airport Extreme base station, but I can't access the web, or access the router from Airport Utility.

Things I've tried so far:

*Rebooting

*Resetting the router to factory defaults

*Swapping out the router for a Linksys

*Clearing out network passwords from Keychain

I doubt it's a hardware issue, as everything works in Tiger (booting from an external drive).

Desktops :: Unable To Access Sub-net / Cannot Ping Into Printer Network

Feb 2, 2009

I got iMac on my office. There is network issue on my iMac Desktop. When my computer remains idle for long time (sleep) and wakes up again, I can ping into the same network device (say 192.168.0.0 network) but I am not able to ping into other sub net (say 10.2.0.0, printer network).

Restarting iMAc resolves the problem or unplugging the cable and connect to some other Laptops and connect back to iMAc works again (I mean I can access other networks again). I turned of auto-negotiation and tried renew DHCP Address but it still doesn't solve my problem. Restarting the computer and unplugging the cable and plug-in back is not a solution for me.

Both computers can connect to the Internet. Both computers can share files with each other. Firewalls set to allow all incoming connection.

Cannot ping from either computer to the other. Error message: Permission Denied. Using the terminal for pinging has the same results. Have not found a solution search the forums. Would like to solve this problem before attempting to add a windows xp laptop to the network.
