Jul 1, 2014My laptop is partitioned, and the startup partition is starting to fill up. I'm trying to figure out what (if anything) I can move to the non-startup partition. My user folder is large due to mobile apps. Can I move the user folder? If not, can I move the mobile apps folder within it?

Jun 4, 2014I have a mid 2011 iMac running latest version of Mavericks. I recently purchased an external thunderbolt SSD and cloned my boot HD to it, excluding the user folders as these are too big for the SSD and will remain on the internal HDD, and made it the start disk. Then, once booted with the SSD, I went into users settings and mapped my user to the user folder location on the internal HDD. I then rebooted.Â
After the reboot everything is working just fine with the exception of Dropbox which first asks for my Mac user account password and then returns the following error and closes the app:Â Couldn't start DropboxThis is usually because of permissions error. Errors can also be caused by your home folder being stored on a network share.
I see involve going into the preferences in the Dropbox application and clicking the button to repair permissions, but I can't get to that because the application just quits. If I reboot using the internal HDD again I can get the application to load just fine.Â

Dec 9, 2014When I search for a file in my computer (command + f) the results appear in a window. If I click on a FILE among the results, the detailed location of that file is shown at the bottom of the window. If I click on a FOLDER, however, no such location information appears. Before Mavericks, locations of folders was also given. Is this a Mavericks bug? Can it be fixed?

ITunes For Mac :: Media Folder Location Keeps Reverting To Old Location?
Sep 6, 2014I moved my iTunes media folder to an external hard drive to free up space on my iMac's hard drive. The new one is located on a hard drive attached to my Airport Express. Since then, I keep getting messages stating that certain items weren't copied to my iPhone because the originals couldn't be found. When I check, the iTunes media folder has reverted to the location on my iMac's main hard drive.Â
How can I prevent this? At best this is annoying, but it also is using up hard drive space unnecessarily. Is this behavior avoidable, or is it something that goes with the territory when you move your media folder to an external hard drive?

Jun 3, 2014I need to move my 'Movie' folder to an external drive. I see to use Symbolic Links (I have Simbolic Linker). But do I need to delete original 'Movie' folder by command line? I've seen two different terminal commands- what the current one is since both those were quite old.
I want to make sure to do it correctly before deleting. I'm installing an SSD PCI 'drive' and need to make my startup drive smaller.Â

OS X :: Move Time Machine Location?
Nov 4, 2010I have a new Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard.
Note: I do not want to change external hard drives, but I want to change the LOCATION of my external and HOW the external is connected to my Macbook.
I have been running Time Machine, backing up to my WD 1TB Passport external drive via USB cable. I would like to lose the "umbilical cord" and connect wirelessly to the external via my (newest model) Airport Extreme base station. I want to do this without losing my previous backups.
When I connect via the AE, TimeMachine gives me the choice to backup to this drive but it starts from scratch, making a whole new backup.
When I click to "Enter Time Machine" it gives me the choice to "use previous disk" and when I click to "use selected disk" as in my screenshot, it allows me to peruse the old backups, I just am not able to continue backing up to that backup.
I would like to backup via the AE, but then also have the choice to remove it and connect directly via USB on occasion and continue the same Time Machine.
Is there any way to do this, or is this wishful thinking?

Is their a .plist I can edit or something so that Software Update will recognize my iWork install and let me update?

Jun 11, 2012After installing Lion, I can no longer move program icons from my applications folder to a sub folder. When I do, it makes a copy and leave the original in the applications folder. When I then try to delete the icon in the applications folder it tells me it's required by the OS and won't let me delete. I'm forced to keep certan applications such as Time Machine and Stickies in the application folder.

I did most of the steps like using mozbackup and making it's exported files into a zip but when it came to replacing the folder they said on the mac I can't seem to find a firefox folder. Even the mozilla folder I found doesn't have anything in. I tried finding it by doing a search for the addons I have installed into firefox thinking I might locate it that way but no luck. Another webpage said I could find the location of the folder through fiefox itself but the way it told me also didn't seem to exist on my mac. How can I find my firefox folder?

But next time I open iTunes, it's reset back to the location on the built-in HD where iTunes places the folder by default. External HD is sometimes disconnected (though not when I'm resetting it). Mar 25, 2009iTunes 8.1 just keeps bugging out on me. I set my iTunes Music Folder Location to a folder on my Time Capsule, but when i exit out and relaunch iTunes, the folder location is reset back to the default iTunes Music folder on my system drive! Why does this keep happening? Anyone else having this problem? I don't want to have to point my location back to the Time Capsule each time I load up iTunes.
A thing to note is however, is that my library file (and other misc itunes files) still remains in the iTunes folder on the system drive. Would that have anything to do with this?

Feb 17, 2010I just installed a new harddrive and I made 2 partitions. One for my system, preferences and installed programs and one for my files.
The problem comes when i put things on my desktop or download stuff. These folders are on my system partition and when i download or save to the desktop temporarely, i have to copy the files later to my other partition and delete the original.
It would save me a lot of time if downloaded files and files saved to the desktop are written on my documents partition.
hence the question: is there any way to change your desktop and downloads folder location to another location/drive?

May 4, 2012I have just installed a new 128 SSD into my MacBook Pro instead of SuperDrive and kept also the old HDD inside. I made a clean install of Lion on the SSD which created a new Pictures folder on the SSD, but I want to have it linked to the old HDD. Is there any way how to change destination of these default folders? (I have tried to create symbolic link and put it instead of the Pictures folder, but Lion does not let me delete the Pictures folder...)Â

ITunes :: Media Folder Location Will Not Stay At Setting?
May 20, 2012My iTunes media folder location is set to my iTunes media folder, which is stored on my external hard drive connected to my network via aiport extreme router. The problem is everytime I turn my mac off and back on my iTunes reverts the location back to my itunes media folder on my mac and I have to manually set it back to my itunes media folder on my external hard drive. Why does it keep changing?

OS X :: Change The Default Location Of 'Music', 'Pictures', Etc. In My Home Folder?
Apr 4, 2010IMAGINE I have 2 hard disk partitions on the SAME hard disk,
one is called 'Macintosh HD' and the other is called 'My Data'.
The Plan:
In the 'Macintosh HD', there are (1) system files & (2) users' settings.
In the 'My Data', there are all the music, pictures, etc.
For example, the 'Macintosh HD' has 40GB and the 'My Data' has 120GB.
All I want to do is to separate the SYSTEM and my DATA without migrating my home folder inside 'Macintosh HD' which contains folders called 'Music', 'Pictures'... to the partition 'My Data'.
I want to separate the system files and my data incase I need to reinstall the Mac OS X while leaving all my data untouched.
So the way I should do (I guess) is to leave my home folder inside 'Macintosh HD' empty,
and create files called, for example, 'My Music', 'My Pictures', etc. in the 'My Data' partition.
Then redirect the files 'Music', 'Pictures', etc. in my home folder inside 'Macintosh HD' to 'My Music', 'My Pictures', etc. in the 'My Data' partition.
In Windows XP or Windows 7, you can redirect those as using the methods below:

But I just don't know how to do that in Mac OS X, it seems that Mac OS X doesn't even provide a way for users to do so:

I saw a reply in macrumors forum and tried to move the 'Music', 'Pictures', etc. folders,
but it turned out that those files were being copied, not moved.
So I can't move the 'Music', 'Pictures', etc. to the partition 'My Data' and make aliases of them which can be put in my home folder inside 'Macintosh HD'.
So, are there only 3 options for me too choose?
(1) stop trying to fight Apple and Mac OS X on where it puts things, just put all the things in my home folder inside 'Macintosh HD', using only 1 partition
(2) move my home folder to the other disk partition, in this case, the partition 'My Data'
(3) can't redirect the location of Music', 'Pictures', etc. folders in my home folder in the 'Macintosh HD', but just simply put things in the 'My Data'.
