OS X Mavericks :: How To Fix Empty Space In Menu Bar
Jun 17, 2014
I recently installed OS X Mavericks from scratch. I'm on the latest version (10.9.3) and running a dual monitor setup. I've noticed that one of the monitors seems to have a space in the menu bar as seen below (the empty space is to the right of 1password (the key icon)) :
The other monitor however doesn't have that space:
What's more interesting though is that clicking on that empty space makes it dispear on that monitor, but the empty space suddenly appears on the other monitor.

I made an image of a partition on my hard drive. The partition takes up 8gb but the actual content in it is below 4gb, the rest is just empty space. The image, no matter what I do or how I do it, keeps turning out to be 8gb as well, and then when I mount it, it has more than 4gb of empty space. How do I shrink the disc image to remove the empty space?! Nothing seems to be working. I tried hdiutil resize in an attempt to resize the dmg to 4gb, and it returned an error saying that is below the minimum size...? I also tried hdiutil compact and it returned an error saying Function not implemented. Is there anything I can do in order to shrink this dmg to delete all the useless space? It's important, because I need to burn it to a DVD.

I recently tried installing Ubuntu on my MBP. After never really using it, I deleted it and removed all the partitions. My problem is that there is still some 'empty space' (about 5 GB worth) that I cannot re-add to the main HD's partition. The space is not a partition of it's own, I can resize the partition box down to it in Disk Utility, but I get an error.
The error message is...
Partition Failed
Partition failed with the error:
Mediakit reports the partition (map) to small.
While it's not a big issue (314 out of 319 GB)

I am wondering if there is a way to decrease the space between menu items (the things on the right side of the menu bar). There is so much wasted space between them, especially the battery percentage and the time.
Also, if anyone knows of a way to kill some of the unnecessary 3rd party menu items that don't have an option in their preferences to not display the menu item.

I do not want to get rid of all the Trash, just part of it. How do you do that? When I attempt it, it appears that ALL the trash will be emptied. Does this mean I have to move what I want to save to another location and then MT the trash, and then move the files BACK into Trash??

when I try to securely empty the trash it tells me some items are locked and asks to continue with all? If I indicate yes, it stops and says I don't have permissions for all files. the files that remain are mainly old apps and .mp3 from iTunes. How do I fix these permissions to get them deleted?

Since installing Mavericks I have found that lots of basic tasks have become a bit difficult.
One such frustrating example of this is whenever I go to empty my trash folder in Mail it crashes. If I select it through the menu (ie. <Mailbox> <Erase Deleted Items> <In All Accounts>) it works fine but I like to do a quick check before emptying the trash and that seems to cause my Mac to implode into a processing black-hole of burning lava (it gets hot until I <Force Quit>).

I'm having a new problem with Mail in Mavericks that seems to have just started around a month ago. When I have emails in the trash in Mail and choose Erase Deleted Items to empty the trash it seems to fully delete them all within the Mail app. But as I just discovered yesterday by going to the gmail website (for the first time in awhile) they are apparently not being deleted from the server. The emails are properly being moved into trash within gmail but when emptying trash in Mail they do not empty within gmail.
As I said, this is a recent problem that never happened with Mavericks Mail for me before a month ago. I just updated to 10.9.4 today and its still happening.

I have been trying to upgrade to OS X Mavericks. I went to the AppStore searched it, it came up and I clicked download. Then it asked for my apple id which i put in as usual, then it says downloading and the mavericks icon goes down in my dock bar. The problem is I have waited five hours and the progress bar hasn't moved at all. I don't have anything open but the mavericks downloader on my computer and I have tried restarting and pausing the download. A total of 20 hours for waiting for it to download. I have also typed codes into terminal, but this did not work.

When I go into Mail I can do everything I want but alas! It does not open the menu bits at the top. Thus I cannot do anything except what is available on the inbox screen... I have tried opening and closing and turning off etc. I would tell you what version I am in but that is in the menu and I can't open. I have updated to maverick.

OS: OS X 10.9.4 (13E28)
Since today, my wifi stopped working. Basically the menu icon in the top crashes if I click there, and that causes the entire menu to crash. The only way to get the entire menu back is to type in terminal: killall SystemUIServer
I tried:
- restarting computer
- resetting SMC
- deleting System Preferences
- resetting DNS cache
- repair disk permissions
The only thing that I did recently was:
- install latest Mysql Server (yesterday)
- mac OS updates (last week)

In the above picture, you can see that the time machine menu bar icon is "grey" instead of "black".
It seems that backups occur as normal (when I click on the icon, and choose "Backup now", it seems to backup).
When I click "Enter Time machine", everything seems to work as normal. I can see the latest backup that I made by clicking on "Backup now".
- I have two external hard drives that I use for time machine backups.
- I use OSX 10.9.3
- Macbook Pro 6,2 Inter Core i7 2.8Ghz, 8GB Ram, 500GB HDD,
I have tried:
- Disconnecting both the external hard drives and reconnecting.
- Restarting my Mac.
Why is the icon grey

Before I ask this question, I just want to emphasize that I KNOW how easy it is to create a service using automator. I'm not looking to clutter up my contextual menu more than it already is, I would just like to edit/alter an already existing submenu, or simply add a new one like Dropbox does.
I would like to add a share option to my right-click contextual share option for outlook, or whatever app/service I would like to send the file with.
add a share option to the contextual-menu, and possibly delete some I don't use, like flickr or twitter.

I have 11" Macbook Air and mostly use it just for music and as a home computer and do not have a lot of documents or anything that take up a large portion of the storage. When I look at the storage though it has this "other" portion that takes up almost half of my storage. How can I get rid of the "other" space on my computer?

I downloaded and installed the OS Maverick's recent 10.9.3 update on my 15" Retina Macbook Pro. However since then I am unable to use certain features, like when I right-click on the Desktop, the menu bar shows only two possible options. I cannot "clean up" the icons on my Desktop anymore. Futhermore, I cannot right-click on some places at all - in Finder for example, nothing happens when I right-click on blank space. Only when I right-click on the icons itself does the menu bar pop up, and that only if the viewing mode is in list, columns, or cover flow (basically not in the "icons" viewing mode).
If I understand correctly instead of showing the possible actions that you can't do in grey, it's simply not showing them at all? Either way it's really ugly, and the usefull clean up application is gone!

Macintosh HD is showing 370GB used but it doesn't add up when you look at the Users folder. The largest User account is 24GB, and between Applications, System, and Library there's only another 17GB used. Hence, about 320GB of used drive space is unaccounted for.
Disk Utility also shows 500GB drive, 127GB available, 370GB used.
I suspect an older User account was deleted but has somehow been retained, albeit hidden. Yet the Deleted Users folder is showing Zero Bytes.
Also, the Trash is completely empty, so the missing data is not lurking there.
I'd very much like to examine the deleted account and look at the data (particularly photos and movies) that were in there.

I have a external hard drive that I have partitioned with 350 gig allocated for my Time Machine back up. Its telling me "back up faile" and that I need to delet files to free up space. It clearly says in the preference panel that "oldest backup are deleted when disc becomes full. I'm pretty tech savvy and it looks like the Time Machine optiond are pretty simple. Why wont this just continue to save the latest backup over that last one? I dont need a history of backups. I just want to have one back up that I do maybe monthly.

My iMac system disk has 999.35Gb of storage and shows 511Mb available. However the used figure is 998.83Gb and the system is behaving as if the drive is full and says i'm low on storage. I have an "empty" attached disk also reporting a similar thing.
