OS X Mavericks :: 10.9.4 - WiFi Menu Icon Crash
Aug 27, 2014
OS: OS X 10.9.4 (13E28)
Since today, my wifi stopped working. Basically the menu icon in the top crashes if I click there, and that causes the entire menu to crash. The only way to get the entire menu back is to type in terminal: killall SystemUIServer
I tried:
- restarting computer
- resetting SMC
- deleting System Preferences
- resetting DNS cache
- repair disk permissions
The only thing that I did recently was:
- install latest Mysql Server (yesterday)
- mac OS updates (last week)

I have an iPad and a Mac Pro so I set up internet sharing on the Mac Pro. It looks like it's working from the Mac Pro side -- the little WiFi icon on the menu bar has an arrow -- but the iPad simply will not connect to the internet. My Wifi connection preference tells me the correct network is selected, and the icons to the left of the name look right, but just right of the network name there's a spinning circle icon which means it's still waiting for a connection.
Both were just upgraded to the latest OS (Yosemite 10.10.1 for the Pro, iOS 8.1.2 for the iPad) today, which means both were restarted today.

My network uses WPA2 Enterprise EAP-TLS WIFI encryption, and I have a RADIUS server that handles this. Client devices have a certificate and username that they send to authenticate to the network. I have an iPad, an iPhone, and a Windows 7 laptop computer that all currently connect perfectly fine to this network (so I am assuming that my problem is isolated my MacBook Pro). My MacBook Pro (Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3) worked fine up until about a week ago. It would boot up and automatically connect to the network (I used the iPhone Configuration utility to create a .mobileconfig for this).
Now, however, instead of the WIFI menubar icon staying solid after connecting, my MacBook will "connect" to the network, and have a status of "Authenticating..." (System Preferences > Network). I can still connect to the network, internet, etc., but the menubar icon is now constantly blinking as if connecting/searching (though when I click on it there is a checkmark next to my network), and I am continually prompted every 5-10 minutes to select a certificate and username for connecting to the network by the Mac OS (even though I click "Save this information"). If I don't enter the information in the prompt, I am not connected anymore. This did not happen before. Is there something wrong with the mobileconfig I used for the network profile (I installed it using a normal user account; should I have used the administrator account for this?)? Is there something wrong with the items in my keychain?

So I downloaded a drive program of a Razer mouse and I realized it did not work. So I deleted it.
But the problem is that it left a icon on my menu bar and I have tried the holding command and drag thing. It doesn't work..

In the above picture, you can see that the time machine menu bar icon is "grey" instead of "black".
It seems that backups occur as normal (when I click on the icon, and choose "Backup now", it seems to backup).
When I click "Enter Time machine", everything seems to work as normal. I can see the latest backup that I made by clicking on "Backup now".
- I have two external hard drives that I use for time machine backups.
- I use OSX 10.9.3
- Macbook Pro 6,2 Inter Core i7 2.8Ghz, 8GB Ram, 500GB HDD,
I have tried:
- Disconnecting both the external hard drives and reconnecting.
- Restarting my Mac.
Why is the icon grey

Can't figure out whats going wrong here. Installed SL when i came out, been fine up until a couple of days ago when I tried to resize my Bootcamp partition in disk utility. Not sure if I personally did something wrong or if it just failed while I was resizing, but it never finished. I was done with school and therefore Bootcamp so I've left it alone but ever since then I've been having weird problems with all of my other apps. When I click on the menu bar, whichever app is running crashes and I get the crash report. I popped in the SL disk and repaired the drive via disk utility but its still the same. It did say that one folder was modified and would not be repaired. I can run it again to find out if you think its important. So any ideas of what might be causing my menu bar to be bezerk? The only thread I was able to find was back with someone using Tiger who ultimately had to reinstall the OS.

Is that the only case or selecting sleep from apple menu will cause the same effect.

I have this icon behind the Application icon on the dock and I cannot figure out what it is. It is not something on the desktop as I have moved the dock and can't see it, so it is definitely connected with the Application icon. I have deleted all downloads which could have been half done and I have removed an Alias I had in the Application folder. Now all the Applications appears as "Applications" in the "Kind" column when viewing in Finder.

When I upgraded to 10.5.2 a .Mac icon was placed in the menu bar. I don't use .Mac so I'd like to get rid of it but I can't figure out how. Every other icon in the menu bar can be removed/changed via System Preferences except for the .Mac one as far as I can tell.

So I changed my menu bar to black and replaced the menu bar icons but now for some reason my airport menu bar icon does not show up anymore. I'm not sure if the aiport.menu was fully copied for it to work since when I tried copying the icons, all of them copied except the airport.menu because I got a message saying "Cannot copy because it is in use". So I deleted the file and copied the new one. So then I check on System Preferences > Network and check where it says "show airport status in menu bar" but it doesn't let me click on apply, it's greyed out. So when i exit System Preferences and go back, it's unchecked again.

Suddenly, after awaking my MacBook from sleep, this bluetooth icon has appeared in my menu bar. I didn't change any settings or install anything new recently and I just want to get it off of there. When clicked the option it gives is grayed-out "Bluetooth: Not Available". Does anyone know how I can get this icon off of there?

I just created a new battery icon(s) for the menu bar, I think this is the reason for it not showing..
I replaced all the files with the new images, but I'm suspecting it's because they're not PDF files but PNG (the originals were PDF)
Here are some shots of it atm, you will be able to notice where the battery icon is meant to be..
I still have the original files, but I really want these to work.
Here's how things look in finder.

I run CheckPoint Full Disk Encryption on my MBP 13. It normally has a status icon in the menu bar that I can right click on to get a status of the the program.
Well it is missing now however there is still a process being shown in the Activity Monitor, FDEStatusMenu, that is for that.
Is there anyway I could go into Terminal and restart that show it shows the icon? (There are no menu options to show it)

I just installed Symantec Anti-Virus and it automatically puts an ugly icon in the menu bar. I already have a few things up there that i like/need and don't want the symantec button, but symantec doesn't give me the option to not display the button in the menu bar.
I would like to know if there is a way to override this? I would really appreciate being able to get rid of that little button.

I'm setting up one of the new MacBook Pros with Retina display. I have it attached to a new Thunderbolt display. I used the migration assistant to transfer the files from an older MacBook Pro that was running the latest version of Lion. Once the user files, settings, apps, etc. were transferred, I rebooted and then logged in as the "transferred" user. At first the icon for the display settings appeared in the menu bar next to things like network settings, battery, volume, etc. but then it disappeared and I can't find any way to get it back. It is no longer a check box in the display settings within System Preferences.
Is this a function of the new MacBook Pro or a function of Lion. The other office computer, a 24" iMac, that was also upgreaded to Lion still has the check box. This is kind of important since this MacBook Pro is used on the road with LCD projectors as well as the Thunderbolt display and also just with the built in Retina display.
