OS X V10.7 Lion :: File Sharing Not Working Between IMac And G5

Mar 26, 2012

I have an IMac running 10.7 and G5 running 10.5.8 the G5 we are using as an in house server. It working fine for 5 months then our internet went down and now it no longer works. This is how I have it set up. on the g5 I have file sharing turned on and the folder I would like to share set to share. Then I made logins for for the computer I want to share the folder with. The on the IMac I would go to connect to server and the g5 would show up then it would ask me to login so I did. Everthing worked fine but now when I try to login it just gives me the spinning wheel but never logs in why is it doing this? I have restarted both computers and I have deleted my login and re added it. But still the same thing.

OS X :: File Sharing Between Mbp And Imac On Same Network

Dec 3, 2009

I've figured out the way to share between two macs by enabling "file sharing" to "everyone" connected to the same network. Suppose there're three macs in the network, A,B,C. Is it possible, however, just to share files in A with B and leave C unaccessible to A and B? To put this in short, may I share files to a specific user on the network instead of everyone?

Mac Mini :: Can't Connect To The IMac For File Sharing

Oct 12, 2010

I have a 24" iMac, a 13" MBP, and a Mini, all running Snow Leopard. There's also an iBook G4 running Leopard which I still use now and then. My problem is that I can't connect to the iMac for file sharing; it keeps coming up with "Connection failed" and I've done more troubleshooting for it than I want to so I'm looking for an alternate way to be able to access files that I store on the iMac. Strangely enough the iMac can connect to all the other systems with no problems and the other systems can all connect to each other as well. I've spent hours checking configurations on sharing and can't find anything wrong

I tried using Dropbox, and that would have been a perfect solution except for the fact that one important file that I wanted to share is a Quicken data file, which can NOT be handled by Dropbox (the file gets corrupted, and the Dropbox forum states it's a known issue but no fix is planned). If it had not been for the Quicken data file, Dropbox would have been perfect.

Now I am looking for alternatives. I'm considering the following options:

1. Time Capsule - this is really for use via Time Machine and I already have a wireless network that runs fine. Plus the iMac and Mini already have external firewire drives that handle Time Machine just fine. Reviews tell me it's not all that the time capsule is not suitable just for file store. Cost about $300.

2. Some kind of NAS. I've looked at the different ones, but it seems they don't all support the AFP very well. Some of them require a driver to be installed on the Mac, which I think introduces another option for something to go wrong and which could break with an OSx update. Worse yet, some only allow one system to read and write and others can only read. Cost seems to be anywhere from $400 and up to godawful.

3.Mac mini with no keyboard, mouse, or display (after setup that is). This would be the easiest to hook up and adding extra storage would be easy. Cost $699. As far as I can tell, once I've setup the system I would not need they keyboard, mouse, or display.

4. Other options?

ITunes :: Home Sharing Stop Working On IMac

Mar 23, 2012

I have 2 new Apple TVs, I have 1 Second Gen Apple TV, I also have a new 3rd gen iPad, and a new iMac. Since I got the new iPad and new Apple TVs, iTunes Home Sharing stopped working reliably. I say this because this is when I noticed it. I had not really used home sharing much in the 2 months prior because I sold my old ipad in anticipation of the new one. When trying to access my video collection on iTunes, the iPad and AppleTVs will see my iMac's Video collection, but when selected, it thinks awhile and then the % indicator goes to 50% and stops waits awhile and then indicates that there are no videos.

The only way to get it to work again is to Stop Home Sharing on my iMac and then start it again. Then it works instantly. Less than a day goes by and bang, the problem comes again. Because I can get it to work via iTunes, I have to assume that it is a software issue and not a wireless router issue (im using an airport by the way). I don't know if iTunes is having a hard time keeping up with that many clients (the ipad and 3 apple TVs), or what, but the issue is very annoying and really ruins the Apple experience.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Updated But Now HDD Sharing With Windows 7 Is Not Working?

Jun 26, 2012

I recently upgraded to Lion (desktop not server) and now my HDD sharing with Windows 7 is not working like it used to. If I boot back in to Snow Leopard (diferent HDD) it's all working fine.  My windows 7 PCs can access my shared Mac Pro RAID no problem. If I boot in to Lion they can 'sometimes' connect but mostly not.  To get them to connect I seem to have to use the IP address instead of the system name (\MACPROLIONRaid) like I used to with SL.Nothing changed on the Windows 7 system at all, other than now I get the infuriating dialog tellmy my password is incorrect. Some unknown sequence of rebooting one or both machines, sometimes multiple times, will let me access the mac, but I have no idea what's going on here.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: File Sharing (Read Only) Between User Accounts

Apr 6, 2012

Every file created within the Shared folder is automatically a "read-only" for all other users. How can I make all users able to edit all files within the Shared folder? - The "Apply to enclosed items" does only apply settings to existing files. This means that for every new file you add, you have to press "Apply to enclosed items". - Surely there must be a way to apply the folders setting to all future content? All I want is for this folder to function as any external hard drive; accessible by all accounts without any restrictions!

I just installed Lion 10.7.4 named my computer "fx6800". Then I joined my Windows 2003 Server domain with no problems. After that I could not log on to domain with one of my windows 7 machines because it had the same computer ID. Ok no problem I re joined the domain and re binded with the Win 7 machine and then un binded my Mac Lion machine then re-binded with a different computer ID. No problem both machines can log on to AD with separate computer accounts. Then I notice when I opened terminal it was showing the old computer ID. No problem I fixed it With sudo scutil --set HostName "new host name".

Then when I go to select file sharing in the description to the right under File Sharing On: it shows the path to tha machine is fx6800.domainname.local which is the original computer ID. Also when I select remote login and I believe it shows username@fx6800.domainname.local. I have searched for 2 days and have not come up with anything. I am sure if I reinstall everything it should fix it but I would like to save the time.

Mac OS X Lion Server :: 10 User File Sharing Limit After 10.7.4 Upgrade?

Jun 14, 2012

Has anyone noticed a strange 10 user file sharing limit after upgrading to 10.7.4 server? Using DeployStudio to mass deploy 10.7.4 Lion images in a school. Since upgrading to 10.7.4 server, I am now limited to 10 logins on the repository. Thought this might be a DeployStudio issue, but it seems more like the server is imposing the restriction. If I do a manual login to the shared folder where the image files are kept on the server, I can only do it from 10 computers and computer 11 will refuse to login.

We are able to login to the server via afp but we only see our individual home directories on the system/boot drive.

Mac OS X Lion Server :: Server File Sharing Crashes?

Jun 2, 2012

We have a brand new Mac Pro (12 core with 64GB of RAM) running OS X Lion Server in a corporate environment. The server is running only file sharing and software update servers, and we have around 40 users who need to be connected over AFP at all times. This company runs 24/7 and we have an XSan environment using an ATTO Celerity 8GB 4 channel fiber card (84EN) along with a 6 port 10GB Ethernet card. The Ethernet card is configured in a link aggregation bond using ports 1-4. The idea is that clients who do not have fiber cards installed on their machines can still connect to the SAN via Ethernet and this file server. They AFP connect to the share, and of course the share is the SAN. It's a single mount point and everyone has read/write access.

The issue is that this machine keeps crashing (multiple times per day) and I cannot find any reason why. Syslog shows nothing of value and I've called into Apple Enterprise Support who also brought nothing to the table.

We initially had SMB and AFP file sharing activated but as soon as a Windows 7 client connected the machine was brought down. So, I disabled SMB via terminal (sudo serveradmin stop smb) and deactivated it via the Server app for the share point). That at least allows the machine to be up for 4-6 hours before crashing again.

This is seemingly the simplest of setups for file sharing and I would've thought that this beast of a machine would be able to handle being a file server without issue for far more than 40 clients. I'm seeing high CPU usage, which Apple support told me was perfectly normal (around 60% on the kernel_task process and around 55% on the AppleFileServer process). It also seems to consume all 64GB of memory, though it shows 60GB as inactive, but at the same time it's paging in and out.

Virtually all of the clients are running Lion (10.7.4), the server itself is running 10.7.4. There are a few ethernet connected clients running 10.6 along with two running 10.5. As I mentioned I disabled SMB so there are no Windows computers connecting to this machine at this time (though it would be nice to get that functionality back if AFP can be stabilized).

This company simply cannot be down, especially not multiple times per day. The only way to bring things back and running from a crash is to hard boot the machine via the power button as you cannot perform a restart or a shutdown. Once the machine comes back up everything is back to working order for a few more hours until it happens again.

OS X :: File Sharing From Mac To PC?

Oct 6, 2008

For the life of me, I cannot share movies stored on my iMac with any other device except my Apple TV.

I currently have most of my movie library archived in iTunes (90+ movies) that I converted to .mp4 or .mv4 using Handbrake. All of the movies are available on my AppleTV. I have three networked PCs, one ethernet, two wireless. I have enabled file sharing to all computers. I have installed iTunes on the wired PC as well as one wireless PC. I can share my iTunes music (but no video) between the iMac and PCs.

All three PCs are Windows XP SP2 machines. I can navigate to the movie folder located on the Mac on any computer. I cannot open any movie file. I can open and access shared PDFs, spreadsheets, word documents, pretty much anything I have access to EXCEPT the movies.

I CAN copy the movie from the host Mac to any PC with no issues. Then, Quicktime will play the movie. But, no matter what I try, I cannot stream the movies to any other device, except the Apple TV. (There are no movies stored on the Apple TV. I have a Time Capsule managing a wireless network that streams movies with only a few seconds delay.) I could see there being a time lag streaming a movie to a laptop with 500mb RAM and a G wireless connection, but the wired PC is connected with ethernet. It WILL allow me to copy a 2Gb movie from the iMAC to the PC in less than three minutes.

I initially only had "Read" permissions on the folder in question, but I did try "Read and Write" access to see what happened. Nada.

I cannot find a definitive answer as to sharing movies with iTunes. But, even if iTunes will only share music libraries, I still think that I should be able to stream movies by accessing the file directly. The wired PC is in my daughter's room, and I would like her to be able to stream movies from the iMac. If I navigate directly to the folder in question, one of two things happen. If I try to open a .mp4, I get "Error 50: An unknown error occured" If I try a .mv4, iTunes will open, but nothing happens. I can view the movies playlist under my shared library, but nothing happens when I attempt to open one.

Eventually, I would like to softmod a used XBOX my sister gave me to stream movies on the iMac to another TV. I even tried XBMC on the wired PC to act as a media manager since iTunes would not pull movies off the network. It will find the movies, but it will stall (I did not let it keep trying after 15 minutes of "buffering" a movie.)

I know I'm not the only one trying to share a library. Even if iTunes will not let me do it, I should be able to set something up so others on my LAN can access these files.

OS X 10.5.5
