I would like to make my MBP automatically log off when closing the lid, so when I'm logged in and close the laptop, and someone else opens it up later on, they only can logon to their own user. How can I do this?
View 8 RepliesI've actually got two new Macbooks with the same problem running 10.5.6. That is, neither will go into auto sleep. I've tried killing all running processes, etc. and nothing seems to work. I'm wondering if anyone else is experiencing this problem. I think I'm going back to 10.5.5 until some of these bugs get sorted out.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI can't remember the last time my iMac running 10.5.6 went to sleep by itself. The screen goes off, but it never goes into full sleep by itself. Airport is turned off, I put my cable modem in standby, never sleeps. I read somewhere in another forum that this was a bug with 10.5.6. Is that your experience?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have an aluminum Intel (2007) iMac and I have had it for two years now. I love my Mac and would never go back to a PC now, BUT (you knew that was coming) I have recently (unfortunately I don't know exactly when) developed a problem in that my iMac will not auto sleep. The screensaver will kick in OK, but it will not go to sleep on its own. I can put it to sleep from the menu manually, but not by the setting in System Preferences. I have reset the PRAM, and the SMC and neither of those changes have worked. Have any of you had this issue and solved it?

Is there a way to disable hard drives from automatically going to sleep mode (spinning down). Energy saver (System preferences) already has "put hard disk(s) to sleep whenever possible) turned off, so this must be done from the drive itself. The drives in question are a 3.5" ATA drive from Western Digital (WD5000AAKB) and a 2.5" Seagate SATA drive (Disk utility doesn't tell me which drive model it is, so I have to physically open the enclosure to find out). They're both placed inside external Firewire 800/USB enclosures.
View 3 Replies View RelatedToday I noticed that my mid 2010 MBP is not automatically sleeping. I ran Apple's extended hardware test, along with TechTools Pro 5 from AppleCare disk. Both passed. Reset the SMC and PRAM. I'm still not able to auto sleep. Is there a way to see what exactly is causing my computer to not automatically sleep? Console messages or something?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI was working on curriculum changes for an online ecollege course. Stepped away for dinner and left machine on (MacBook Pro, running OSX 10.9.4). Have done this frequently and the light show screen saver appears, so I tap it to give my password and it returns to where I left off. But, last night, I returned and the connection to the college/university server had been cut and now Safari is taking me back through security and cookie changes I already made. When I tried to shut down the system under the Apple menu, I got an error box indicting that if I shut down all my files would be deleted. When I tried again, it informed me that I was logged in as a guest user and shutting down would result in the permanent deletion of my files. So, I let the damned thing run and it's still running because when I looked up, all folders and files had disappeared from my desktop -- even some of the applications (like Word) had also disappeared. I want my files back and I want to shut this down safely.

In a previous contact software program I have used for years, the first letter of names, streets, and cities, were automatically capitalized as I typed them in. Unfortunately, that software does not work under Lion and the developer is out of business. Because of that, I am trying to convert to Address Book. I can't find the ability to have that same thing happen in Address Book. Is there something I can turn on in Preferences or some other obscure window? My old contact software also automatically filled in cities, names, or states that I previously entered. Great time saver but doesn't seem to exist in Address Book.

I don't know if this is properly autofill or autocomplete - the two overlap too much anyway so I'm not wasting brain cells trying to come up with a distinction that makes sense to non-engineers. ANYWAY. Here's the point.
I'm on my bank website. My login is xtnjohnson -- just like here. Only I mistyped it once, so in autofill/autocomplete (whichever it is), I get a little drop-down showing two options: xtnjohnson or xtnjohson.
I want to delete only the second option. I recall at sometime finding a very simple way that involved highlighting the offending entry and hitting either control-delete, shift-delete, command-delete, or function-delete, only I can't seem to get any of those combinations to work. And of course I can't find the thread anymore.
The solution did *not* involve dealing with the autofill preferences in *any* way -- I've seen that option and it doesn't help (a) because there's no quick way to find the website where the problem is occurring (my list is long), (b) even when I go through my list, I don't see my bank's url, (c) the place for entering my login appears to be in something like JavaScript, so I'm not sure it'd be tracked in one of those lists, and (d) I don't know that this is properly an "autofill" problem anyway.

I am trying to recovery a file created in Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac. The file was lost after a power outage. In an attempt to recover the file, my first thought was to check for the file in the Microsoft AutoRecovery 2008 folder within my hardrive. However, the folder only contains a total of four files! Why? If my Microsoft Word is set up to auto save a document every 10 minutes...then how is it possible the folder could only contain 4 files? I am at a loss of how else to recover this file. I am currently attempting to do so with a free trial of Data Recovery Software to see if the file I lost even still exists, with no success so far.

In tiger you could easily disable safe sleep and remove the sleep image file but in Leopard this seems to have changed. Yes you can disable safe sleep & remove sleep image files but only temporarily. As soon as you restart or change energy settings back to default, leopard automatically reverts the safe sleep settings to default and starts creating an image file again
Is there no way to permanently disable/remove these?
My iMac wake unexpectedly from sleep mode then goes back to sleep 00:10-00:15 later. Yosemite is current.

I leave my Air on pretty much all the time, and put it to sleep while moving around etc. Sleeping it disconnect the Airport connection - which if very annoying. At a desk I've just been dimming the display all the way off in order to keep my connection.
However, I recently noticed that by setting a "sleep display" hot corner, my network connection is maintained.
I have 2 questions:
1) Is sleep display equivalent (functionally) to simply dimming the display all the way down?
2) Is there a way to either set up a shortcut to sleep the display (other than a hot corner) and/or set it so that only the DISPLAY sleeps after 'x' minutes?
I set the MBP to sleep in 10 min through the Energy Saver pref with the option to sleep the hdds. When it's about to sleep the screen dims, then turns black, then the sleep light comes on but does not blink no matter how long I leave it. The blinking only happens when I close the lid or when I select the Sleep option under the Apple logo. Is that normal behavior?

It happens after display sleep or computer sleep on login not on boot up .I've noticed that i run out of ram when the problem appears (only 15MB RAM available out of 4GB), though i doesn't happen every time . I've talked to service and told me its either motherboard replacement or because the ram isn't enough (gpu shares with main ram) so maybe i should try upgrading ram. URL....

I have torrents going all the time. If the computer goes to sleep, the internet disconnects, so they stop. Display sleep wouldn't disconnect though. Is it OK to have computer sleep on "never" but keep display on "15 minutes"? I don't usually even leave the computer on overnight.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am running Mac Mini as a home server (turns out to be not a great idea, btw), and even though I set the preference to never sleep or shut down, it does go to sleep when there is no activity for long time. Since I am using it as home server, it should stay awake all the time or at least wake up from sleep when there is incoming ping from other computer, but it just goes to sleep.

i am trying to prevent my new 2010 macbook pro from going to sleep when the lid in closed. i know there are programs that do this but they keep the display on as well. I wanted to know if there is a program that does it and has the option of turning off display. i am running snow leopard 10.6

Recently I've started connecting my 2.5GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (pre-unibody) Macbook Pro 17" to an external monitor (via DVI).
Since then my computer goes into Safe Sleep instead of Sleep (it's plugged into power).
This is an annoyance I'd rather avoid because even if all programs relaunch:I have to wait for them to launch (longer)Programs like Excel seem to have been quit in an unorthodox fashion: when it starts back up I get an error notice that it was shutdown inappropriately & the doc which reopens is a rescued version of the doc I had open before the safe sleep.

I have a late 2008 15" MBP, and I often leave it playing videos while I go to sleep. Lately, it's stopped sleeping the display and/or going to sleep (depending on whether something's downloading in the background) after the video is finished, which is quite annoying as the screensaver's glare normally wakes me up in the middle of the night (and it's probably not too good for the display either).
Before a few weeks ago, it would quite happily sleep the display a few minutes after the video (in Front Row or otherwise) finished playing, but it's now consistently ignoring the sleep and display sleep settings (which are all correct). I even set the display sleep timer to 1 minute, waited without anything happening in the background, but nothing happens.
Anyone have any idea how to get the timers to work again?
I'm having a problem with my PowerBook G4 where is goes into sleep mode at random times. Mostly when I am streaming video..or at times the fan comes on, it sounds super high then boom. sleep mode again. After hitting the space bar, it comes back on, but it'll happen again shortly after. View 5 Replies View RelatedAs of last night, my MBP started acting very strangely. After entering my username and password, it would enter the desktop for a short period of time and then kick back into sleep mode; the screen would turn back to black. Sometimes it will let me stay on the desktop for a long time and other times it will hardly let me stay on the desktop. I called apple support and they had me start the computer in safe mode; even then it occasionally kicks me out.
The tech guy said that it was a "strange software issue" and not a hardware issue. I thought it was a hard drive issue; my hard drive makes an odd sound when it unlocks (a grinding sound), but it has been doing that for quite some time with no issues. I tried to reset the SMC and it didn't do anything.
How should I remedy this problem? Is this a hard drive issue? Hard drive failure? Has the grinding sound finally caught up with me? I am running OS X; not leopard or snow leopard. I know I need to upgrade, but this shouldn't be happening.
i have a little problem with the sleep light... i don't know when this started, but i notice today, that when i put my macbook pro to sleep, the light just stays on and not "pulsing" like it used to do... is that normal?

So i went and bought my first imac (2003 second hand for really cheap), which has osx 10.4.1 on it (tiger i presume) and came with no wires/keyboard/mouse. So im using a windows keyboard and a standard usb mouse. Anyway the damn thing has a username and password so im locked out and managed to get 4cd installation of tiger. It doesnt seem to autoboot from cd, held down c during restart and still it boots straight to the username password menu. All I really want to do is just bypass the password or simply reinstall the os By the way, I dont have access to another mac and I dont have a working 4g and below ipod
