OS X Mavericks :: Administrative Accounts Resetting To Standard
Jun 17, 2014
We are experiencing an issue where our enterprise Mac machines running Mavericks (10.9.1 to 10.9.3) where accounts set with administrative privileges are somehow getting reset to standard privileges. When this occurs we are unable to administer the machine and even attempting to log in with root is unavailable. Our only recourse has been to reimage the machine.
We do run Microsoft Office, Outlook, and Lync. Not sure if that is playing a part but throwing it out there.

I am not sure how it happened but after upgrading the gmail account, the user accounts were changed from standard users to Mobile Me users. None of the users has ever had that type of account, and I am trying to figure out how to get it back to a standard user account. When the user attempts to log in, it asks for the user name, but also the Mobile Me user name (which they do not have). to make it worse, Mobile Me is no longer accpting new users, so I annot just add an account and log in using the new info.

I have recently noticed that all of my accounts have become Standard accounts. I no longer have Administrator privileges for my computer (MacBook). I tried going through Root to change my normal account back to Administrator but according to my accounts preference pane even my Root account is listed as standard. I can check the allow user to be an administrator on this computer but it does not save this preference and will un-check once another user is selected or the window is closed.
I have also tried creating a new account through single user mode but again to no avail. How would I go about fixing this problem? I would like to install some new software and some software is no longer working the way it once did since this change.

Somehow all the accounts on my computer automatically changed to standard. The mac website said that this can happen after an upgrade and to fix it run the "reset password" utility from the install disc. I am using a school computer so I don't know where a mac os disk is. I am using OSX 10.5.8. I also don't know the root password.
I tried this to fix it : [URL] but the account I created was also set to standard. Is there any way to fix this without the install disc?
Edit:
I also tried this but it hung after starting SystemStarter: [URL]
I can't even change the time now....

I am getting my first mac for christmas (a 24" imac) and am planning to setup 3 accounts:
1 for me (admin)
Another one for me (standard)
1 for my brother (standard)
I plan to use the standard one for me as my main account but when installing apps and the like plan to switch to the admin one. What I was wondering is, as far as a I can tell from apple is that if I put music on my standard account my brother would not be able to see the music files, the same for pictures and movies. I would like to be able to share the music files and some pictures across both of our accounts. Would putting the music in itunes from the admin account make this possible and what about pictures? I would also like to keep some pictures private, as would he.

I know that my Mac is technically a multi-user system, but it offends me mightily to have to give administrative rights to programs from Microsoft, Adobe, Oracle, etc when they should clearly be able to function in a single-user install available only to my userid.
I can see where firewall software and maybe stuff like vmware needs it but there doesn't seem to be a compelling reason for letting nearly every software company on the planet have super user access to my filesystem. Once I give them such rights its trivial for them to set up a set-uid permission as root on some little executable tucked away in their install.
Any way to force software to just install in your own userspace? Is there some type of jail/chroot I could set up to protect my system from these programs?

When I purchased my iMac a few years ago, I created one user account and just started using my computer. I am trying to implement a few Safe Computing practices by creating a new Admin user account and changing my original user account to a Standard user.
For some reason, I cannot change either of the accounts to a standard user after I type in the password. I've logged in as both and tried to change the other user profile to a standard user, but the checkbox is greyed out on both of the Admin User accounts.
I can create a new standard user, but I have everyting set the way I like it on my current Admin user account. It would be much easier to have a new Admin User account and "Downgrade" my original Admin account to a standard user account.
why the option to change from an Admin user to a standard user would be "Greyed Out"? The support articles walk me through, what should be a few simple steps, but I can not change the settings because the checkbox is greyed out.

I have a mid-2011 iMac (with Mavericks OS), and am doing a clean install before giving my computer to a relative. I performed a secure erase of my entire harddrive (using disk utility), reset the NVRAM / PRAM (but it only chimes once even after I tried several times), and now I get the grey screen even when I try to boot from CD, safe boot, or any other commands. I can't even get back into the disk utility.
On a side note, I have the install DVD in the DVD drive and I can't get that out.

In my home machine I have several email accounts. I have a wife, two company accounts, and 4 young kids and each of them has is own account
Still they all look like as follows
My Name <mywife@mac.com>
My Name<sonaccount@mac.com>
and so on
As my kids receive emails, when they want to reply they would like to have their name in the header as this
mywife <mywife@mac.com>
sonaccount <sonaccount@mac.com>
In the Mail preferences the names are grey and cannot be modified
Before iCloud this was easy to do, but how to do so in the latest version of Mavericks?
I can no longer use one of my accounts. What happens when I try to add it to Mavericks Mail it recognises the log and pass as correct, however the Mail option is not available.
Trying to enter the mail box from SAFARI the iCloud, com website recognises my log and pass, clicking on the MAIL option it asks me to enter the log and pass again, doing so it tells me that log is already taken
I don't understand how this is possible as these are all paid account for well over a decade and I am already correctly in my iCloud account.

I read many messages about the (automatic) Internet Account sort that is done every time something is edited in the accounts list.I have followed the advice I found but with different results. But these methods, for me, do not "solve" my problem: when I have all my accounts in the right order, if I have to change something again, the sort is automatically done.
it's possible to disable the sort of the Internet Accounts? If not, could be a good feature in the next OS upgrades.

I have migrated my emails from old imac to new imac and that worked ok. So i have my email folders now on the new imac in a separate user account.
I now want to move my email folders on the new Mac from the separate user account into my other user account. Is that possible?
I could also solve this by migrating only my email folders from old imac into new imac "other user account" but i am not sure if that is possible.

All other articles I've seen online and on this site have been utterly useless for information on how to reformat this drive to a standard format. It has to be possible because all it is is a standard usb thumb drive.
I don't care if it gets rewritten as I've made a copy of it, and besides, if I really need the os to be installed again I'll just take it to the Genius Bar to have it done.
I'm looking for someone who really knows there stuff with terminal and permissions and all of that stuff to shed a little light on this subject.

I just got my MacBook Pro (late 2011/Mavericks) back from a covered Apple repair. It now has a new logic board, and although most other things seem to work ok, I cannot log in to either of my Mail accounts (or to the C-panel of my website, where one of those accounts is located), either by using the existing password entries in MAIL preferences, or by entering the passwords manually. How do I get this to reset so that I can access my mail?

I am having a problem with the mail app on a late 2010 MacBook Air. Specifically, all accounts are offline after resuming from sleep. I am running apple mail (7.3), and OS X 10.9.3. Once the network reconnects, only the mail app remains a problem.
my having messed around with the DNS configuration in order to try an app called Blockless and/or having upgraded to OS X 10.9.3. I have four mail accounts, all but one of which are Gmail IMAP accounts (the 4th runs from Bluehost mail, and is also an IMAP account). I currently have the DNS set at the default number, but might try going back to 8.8.8.8. Mail works fine on my several iOS devices.

I had an Exchange account that I had been using for years. Recently, I switched jobs, and therefore the Exchange account was discontinued (i.e. my user was deleted from the server, emails bounce). BUT I cannot remove this obsolete account from my System Preferences > Internet Accounts. It drives me crazy. Whenever I hit the "-" minus button, the account disappears, but whenever I open Internet Accounts again, it's right back in its place. Apple Mail keeps complaining that it "cannot connect to the server", but won't let me delete the account.

Okay, so here is how my question comes about... I have already searched and could not find links to other threads..
I bought a G4 desktop from a guy on craigslist about a week ago and I want to upgrade from 10.3.9 to the newer 10.5. He has an administrative account on the computer and whenever I try and load the 10.5, it asks for his password. I called the guy wondering what his password was and he told me. I tried entering that in and it will not work. Now the guy will not answer his phone or his e-mail address. I know he was the original owner because of the information on the computer and the name on the business card he exchanged for mine.
I would really like to upgrade my OS but I need to know how to go about reseting the computer to erase 100% of everything on the computer. Can someone please help me, I am new to Mac and I don't really know what to do!!!

I don't remember ever having this problem since Keychain first appeared. About a week ago I changed my login password and now when I attempt to look at any of my Keychain passwords my computer prompts me to enter my Keychain password (which is my OLD login password) rather than allowing me to enter my new administrative login password. I don't want to have to remember two passwords when only a week ago I only ever had to enter my one current administrative password to authorize Keychain Access to allow me to look at any of my numerous passwords in its window pane. How can I get it to only require me to enter my one new/current adminstrative password? I tried "Keychain First Aid" and error messages to appeared stating: Verification Terminated Unexpectedly or Repair Terminated Unexpectedly A reviewer at MacUpdate had the same experience with Keychain First Aid that I did

I have installed Parallels to run an embroidery software (Floriani) on my MacBook Air. Both Parallels and the Floriani are running fine and I can see my windows formatted external hard drive when in Floriani and can bring in files from it. But when I try to save a redesigned embroidery file to the external hard drive it tells me I can not because I do not have administrative rights. I have tried to also tried to copy embroidery files downloaded from the internet to my Macbook and get the same message. Since I am the administrator (and only user) of this laptop, how can I get access to the hard drive. I tried following the all the suggestions in the Help Center for setting permission but even though I can set the drive as a "shared" file I cannot see the "lock'" icon referred to and in the "Sharing and Permissions" it still says I can only read.
