OS X Mavericks :: 10.9.4 - Spotlight Reindexing After Every Boot / Restart

Jul 1, 2014

Spotlight still wanting to reindex their mac after every restart/reboot - the finder becomes completely bogged down until spotlight finishes reindexing my mid 2011 iMac hard drive. I have tried a clean install from scratch, clearing the caches, deleting the spotlight files and letting it reindex from scratch, nothing seems to get rid of the initial lag once the desktop first appears - it happens after every restart or initial boot up….as soon as the icons for the hard drive appears, it immediately goes into "reindexing iMac hard drive" and takes a few minutes to complete, during that time, the computer is totally unresponsive to anything until it finishes. (Computer configuration = Mid 2011 iMac with 16GB ram and 500GB H.D. that has over 200GB of free space - Time machine backs up to a 2TB Lacie D2 Drive via firewire 800).

OS X Mavericks :: Spotlight Indexing Takes Too Long After Restart

Jun 19, 2014

I have a 2012 iMac with 2 partitions, one main partition running Mavericks and one smaller partition running Mountain Lion.  I normally do all my work in Mavericks, but sometimes I need to boot into Mountain Lion and do a few things.  When booting back into Mavericks it takes at least 30 minutes (if not more) for my Mac to get back to full speed.  I think it's primarily due to the spotlight indexing which goes on for 30 minutes or more after the restart.  In spotlight prefs I do have my Mountain Lion disk added to privacy so that it won't be indexed, but that doesn't appear to solve the problem. what exactly is it indexing after a reboot and why does it take so long.I would really like my Mac usable at normal speeds within a couple of minutes after a reboot at most.

OS X Mavericks :: Quit Out Of All Running Apps Before Doing Shutdown Will Restart On Boot

Jun 26, 2014

I am running Mavericks 10.9.3.

I always quit out of all apps before doing a shutdown.  I make sure that nothing, except Finder, is running when i shutdown.  And, I do a full shutdown, not just sleep.

Yet, occasionally, the apps that were running before I quit out of them will restart when I turn the MacBook back on.

OS X Mavericks :: How To Add A Drive To Spotlight

Jun 25, 2014

I have a new USB 2/3 portable external drive, the kind without a spinning disk. I have been using Super Duper! to make a bootable backup, but it has been taking forever (3+ days) to copy my 435 GB of data.

When writing back, someone at Super Duper support asked if I had added my drive to Spotlight Privacy. I looked this up in the Apple knowledge base, but no definition turned up.

OS X Mavericks :: Spotlight Search On Networked Mac?

Jun 30, 2014

I have a number of Mac's (all running Mavericks), connecting to a shared folder on a Mac we use as a 'server' (it doesn't run server software though, just Snow Leopard client).

Does Mavericks Mac's use the 'spotlight index' of this shared, networked, Snow Leopard Mac, or when we search it, it's just searching the actual file structure?

I'm having issues with searching this networked Mac (some files not being found and then a on later search they appear), and I don't know whether a rebuilding of the spotlight index on the networked Mac is a relevant troubleshooting step.

OS X Mavericks :: Applications Not Showing In Spotlight?

Aug 31, 2014

For some reason, even though I have 'Applications' listed as number one for searching in Spotlight - they don't show up at all.

Any documents or mails about the app get lists but not the applications.

Interesting that even using the Alfred add-on, I can type the app name in and again don't get it in the search at all.

I tried rebuilding using disk utility as well as Onyx - to no success.

OS X :: Mac Keeps Saying To Restart On Boot Up?

Mar 1, 2010

my MBP gray screened with the "You need to restart your computer..." error message. I have absolutely no idea what could have caused this, although Final Cut Studio 2 did finish installing about 10 minutes before it happened for the first time. I tried restarting a few times but the error message kept on appearing about 30-60 seconds after the desktop loads up. I left the laptop alone over night and in the morning, I switched it on and it appeared to have fixed itself but this afternoon, the restart screen came up again.

I have a time machine backup from yesterday, but as I have work due in at the end of this week, I'm a little bit panicky at the moment.

What I'm concerned about, is that if I reinstall Snow Leopard, then restore from a Time Machine back up, it's just going to restore this error.

If anyone could help, it would really be appreciated. (I've attached the error message if anyone doesn't know what I'm on about.)

OS X Mavericks :: Time Machine Extremely Slow - Spotlight Never Finishes Indexing

Jun 4, 2014

I am really careful about OXS upgrades, I have a Macbook Air 13" 4GB/256GB ssd, 2013. last monday I finally did the Mavericks upgrade; Mountain Lion was working great, but as Yosemite coming soon, I thought that was a good time to do it. Guess what...

Time Machine is NOT WORKING. I never had a problem with TM, and I use Mac since 90's, so I even can't remember when it came out, but I trade at least 4 Macs using TM and never had an issue.

Now, over Mavericks, it is taking forever. By just now, after almost 30 hours, it is backing up 8.57 GB of 60 GB. I already did the reformating of the TM's drive, it did not work.

I got a new HD external, reformatted on Disk Utility, turno ON and OFF and ON TIme Machine as I read it many times on other posts, and nothing.. It is just taking forever. I never saw this on any other OSX.

Spotlight is indexing too, taking too long, and probably this is the reason (or one of the reasons...) for TM take so long.

I started over wifi, I have an Aiport Express Extended thing, but my Macbook is really close to the first one, on the chain. I made sure that airport is connected to this one, and, it is.

I plugged my TrendNet USB-Ethernet cable, which works really great and fast. Nothing changes, System Preferences recognizes both connections, wifi and ethernet, both are working, but speed did not change at all...

I can't really believe that Apple will leave Time Machine users on this ridiculous situation. But what to do next.

Intel Mac :: 10.5.8 Cannot Boot Or Restart

Mar 18, 2012

My iMac will not start up when shut down, or awake from sleep. To get it to start i must turn off the power, and turn it back on, then it starts up and runs fine.If i Restart it, it switches off, and will not power back on. The machine still works great but is begining to be a pain in the back-side cycling the power every morning.I have done an SMC Reset, and that did not change it.

I have also added a new user, and when i logged in as the new user, it did restart a couple of times (cannot remember the exact amount) and then when i switched back to my normal account it restarted fine... i assumed it was fixed... but after that it's gone back to it's old painful self..

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Mac Will Not Restart But Will Boot

May 15, 2012

The machine will not restart. When I attempt a "restart," everything seems to shut down properly. When trying to start back up, the machine hangs at the gray screen. I have left it there for a long time and nothing happens. However, I then force a shut-down by holding the power button for a few seconds. After that, the machine will start up properly. Again, a "cold" start works perfectly fine. Only a "restart" causes a problem and will always hang at the gray screen (no logo - nothing). This is the only way I can restart my machine.

Intel Mac :: No Boot With: Restart Holding Cmd +r?

Mar 17, 2012

I verified the hard disc on my mid 2010 3.06 ghz 10.7.3 iMac this morning to be greeted by a box telling me this disc was corrupt and that I needed to restart while holding cmd+r until the apple logo appears then to repair the disc.at this point I would like to say that I am posting this from said iMac and it boots up normally and runs fine.but, when I start it holding cmd and 'r' let go at the apple logo the cog starts turning below the apple for about 10/15 seconds then the apple is replaced with a circle with a line through it (the cog keeps on spinning below it) it seems like it would just sit like this for ever - after about 5 mins I held the power button, turned it off, turned it back on again and just left it to boot up normally - no problems. thought I would try it again - turned it off, held cmd and r exactly the same as before......

MacBook Pro :: Won't Boot After Restart But Boots After Shutdown

Jun 23, 2014

I have an issue with my 13" Macbook pro mid 2010 OSX 10.9.3. It won't boot after restart, but boots normaly after shutdown and start again.

Few months ago my primary sdd Corsair hard disk (I have 2 hdds. Replaced the original with the CD-rom) which I installed 2 years ago, stopped working. Gave the macbook to authorised service provider in my country and they said I need a new hdd and a new hard drive cable. The ssd was still under warranty, so Corsair replaced it with a new one. They gave me SATA3 instead of SATA2 (which at first I didn't noticed). Later they said they don't have SATA2 anymore. Also replaced  the broken cabel.

Now it's working. If you start it after normal shutdown, it boots normally. But if you restart it it won't boot at all. The apple keep spinning and the forbidden sign appears. I tried PRAM and SMC reset. Nothing

What should I do? Can the use of SATA3 instead of SATA2 hdd lead to some issues with my macbook? I can try to find and buy new SATA2 sdd hdd but they are expensive and I'm not sure it will fix the restarting issue.

I cannot access anything as it is stuck in the phasing out stage so I see my wallpaper as a blur.when the battery finally runs out, it will have to shut down which I cannot do right now despite holding down the power button for quite a while.
