OS X :: Mac Temporarily Freeze When External Drive Starts Up
Sep 24, 2009
I have had this problem for some time, on Leopard and on Snow Leopard (don't remember about Tiger), where my mac freezes for 2-5 seconds when my external drives are woken up. This happens often when I access the "file open" window, it will just sit there until the drive is started.

I recently got a MBP (i7 2.66ghz, 8gbs ram, 7200rpm hard drive) and since I got it apps seem to temporarily (like for 10-15 seconds) freeze (only 1 at any time normally) and i'll get the spinning beach ball thing. Even if I only have say 1 app open (like safari) it'll hang up for 10 or so seconds randomly. It happens say maybe once or twice every hour (but having said that i've used it hours at once with a lot more than one application open and it hasn't done it) on various apps and I don't know why. Is it normal? I wouldn't think 1 app such as safari or itunes running should do that? It's not a problem(?) that bothers me really, I just want to know if something might be wrong? I've only had the notebook for a week so far and it's my first Mac.

I bought a western digital passport hard drive last week. everything was working fine until yesterday. when trying to copy iMovie events to the drive, it hung, and iMovie crashed. Since that time, everytime I try to mount the drive, my finder hangs. I cannot eject the drive properly. I cannot access any old files. I can continue to use other applications, including flock, or tweetie, etc. but can't do anything with the drive.
I have tried searching the forums, (i'm not an advanced user). I have tried using disk utility, and it says; 'The disk ?Murtaza Malik HD? could not be unmounted' When I try to eject it says the drive is in use, and cannot be ejected. I was using the drive with time machine. I disabled that, and now time machine also hangs when i try to access it.

I have 5 external drives... They are Seagate and Western Digital Drives. The worst of the bunch is the Western Digital My Book Studio Edition (1TB) that I have connected via FW800. The 2nd worst offender is the Seagate 750GB Free Agent connected via FW400. The most dependable appears to be a Western Digital USB drive, but it's the slowest performer. The issue is this: I either have a freeze up that requires an unplug from the Mac as well as power, then re-mount to get working again, OR, when I start up the Mac, it just hangs at the 'apple' and never fully boots. I have to unplug the drives and boot, then plug them back in after the boot. It's getting very frustrating. Do you all have a successful setup with external drives?

I received an Acomdata 2Tb external hard drive today from Amazon and plugged it in. Time Machine popped up and I declined to link the hard drive to it. I went into Disk Utility and chose the new hard drive on the left column and went to erase. I chose Mac OS Extended. I named it and hit erase. It started going, and going..... and going... and a half an hour later I knew something was wrong.
Disk Utility was not responding and I eventually had to Force Quit. Now I cannot format the hard drive. I starts and then it stops with a disk error. I tried to run the First Aid verify and repair and both stopped after a few seconds with an error. What do I do?

I have an additional HDD in my powermac and TM is set to auto back to this but what i want to do is run a backup to an external HDD from which i will import the data to my parents computer so that i have another backup of my stuff in a different location for safety's sake but i didn;t think you could change the location of the back up on a temporary basis and that all you could do is run a fresh backup on the external drive and re-run another back up which will take ages again onto my existing hdd.

I've got an old 20 inch blue and white CRT monitor connected to my last rev. Powerbook G4 with RAM upped to 1.5 gigs. I also have some peripherals connected to the usb hub on the monitor and all my ports on the powerbook itself are used up as well. Basically I'm running this mainly as a desktop. So, through the day while i'm working I get these blips on the screen randomly. they are horizontal blips almost as if I've just turned the monitor on. It is seriously about a millisecond. blink of an eye. anyways the freeze happens 99% of the time right after one of these blips AND while I'm holding the mouse button (usually manually scrolling in Firefox) it freezes for a second, i get the spinning beachball, but then it turns back to the arrow.
i can move the arrow all over the place, but i cannot do anything else. option+apple+esc doesn't do anything. the scaling effect doesn't work on the dock. i can't start or quit anything. if iTunes is playing, the music plays on, yet everything else is still frozen. so I open the lid and hold down the powerbutton until it shuts down. then i start up again. i have no problems when i use the powerbook without the external monitor. so is the monitor the culprit? Do i need to get a newer monitor? could it be a problem with usb 1.0 ports on the monitor and the usb 2.0 ports on the powerbook - a conflict of interest so to speak?

I bought an iMac about 2 weeks ago and when accessing files from external hard drives I will get the spinning beach ball and all of the programs will become unresponsive and the only way to relieve the problem is to power down the computer. We have two 3 TB Seagate HDs connected via USB.

Only started recently but my hard drive sometimes starts clicking when being used thoroughly(like when extracting archives) and then it will make one loud click(sounds like when my pc hard drives go to sleep) and the computer has to be restarted. Should I take into the local apple store or see if it gets worse?

I have a 2011 Macbook Pro and an older (5 year old) Western Digital external hard drive. I have always used this hard drive for both mac and windows. Recently, however, whenever I go to transfer a file from the mac to the WD hard drive, the little transfer window pops up and it appears to initiate the transfer. However, it never fully starts it. It appears to "get stuck" in that initiating stage, showing zero of 3.16 gb transferred and shows an unknown transfer time. This happens no matter how long I leave it open. Again, I have used this external hard drive with my macs for the past 5 years without any problems until now. I haven't moved or modified the WD hard drive

I like to have the application dock auto hide on my mac book pro, but I also have a couple applications that require me to click near the bottom of the window. Is it possible to temporarily disable the dock from appearing while I move the mouse near the bottom of the screen, perhaps like it's possible to disable the magnification with one of the modifier buttons?

I temporarily lost all sound on my MacBook Pro. I hooked it up to my television and had good sound. Then I unplugged it from the TV and lost all sound. I couldn't get sound through the speakers on my computer, television, or iPod headphones. I went online and searched for similar problems. I was amazed at how many people had the same problem. Many of these people were forced to send their computers to Apple to have it fixed. I found this: [URL]

I'm going to upgrade my harddrives soon. I use about 300gb of space in my hd, and want to upgrade to a raid-0 (2x1tero) hd configuration... and use my current 500gb drive for my time machine hd. Will that work up until i approach 400-500 gb? Or do i need a 2 tero hd for time machine to work at all? I am not that concerned with having time machine go back too far, i just want an uptodate backup mostly...

As much as I trust him, I have a suspicion he might vandalise my facebook or bid on something on ebay, since firefox remembers my passwords. So, if I drag firefox out of applications and onto a pendrive, will i be able to stop it working and then drag it back on the next day? (I know it would work with most apps, but I don't know where firefox keeps passwords and cookies etc)

I have a Mac Pro with all hard drive slots filled. The first two disks (includes startup disk) are independent, and 3 and 4 are set up in a RAID 1 mirror. I have to take my computer into the Apple store for a repair and I'd like to just take out all the disks except for my startup disk... however I'm not sure how to go about doing so for the RAID. If I take the drives out, and boot up the computer with them no longer inside, will the computer "freak out" and/or will the computer no longer recognize the RAID if I put them back in again later?
If the latter is the case, will the data be lost or would I just have to set up the RAID again... and if I do that, will that also cause the data on the drives to be lost, or is it possible for it to mirror them again without needing to make changes to the data?

This morning when I plugged in my MagSafe Power Adapter to my MacBook Pro, I heard a 'pop' sound. It sounded like fuse going or something. Then I noticed that the Green light was not turning on, nor was the Amber light. I then unplugged everything and let it sit there for about 30 seconds and then plugged everything back in. The Green light then turned on and the MBP recognized it as a power source. The question is should I be worried? AppleCare expires for me in December of this year.

is there a way of making the last few accounts that have logged in to be stored on the client computer temporarily, just incase the server ever went down? There is such a setting in Windows Server 2003, I'm just wondering if Apple has anything that does that.

On my iMac I have 2 operating systems installed, and Windows 7 and Mac OSX. Until recently I did not use OSX, but I tried as it looks. But now, back when I want Windows 7, I will begin when you turn to run Mac OSX. I know how to switch to Windows, but only temporarily, off the PC and when starting to hold the Alt key and selected by Windows. But after turning the PC begins to load OSX again.

I just bought a used macbook pro 2010 from Craigslist. Whenever I start the laptop, it keeps taking me to the OS X utilities.Â
When I try to "Reinstall OS X", it asks me to Install OS X Mavericks. After putting in my apple login, it says "item is temporarily unavailable".Â
How do I install OS X Mavericks or update to Yosemite?

I Have a Question about iCal & what would be the best way to set up a calender that displays work days but also shows "Holiday" time in the same calender At the present time it has the work times set to repeat weekly but the main issue I have is when I put the "Holiday" time in I don't want the work events popping up every day on the break. I know there isn't much I can do with it but I will like to hear your thoughts.

I noticed my trackpad started acting funky last night. It won't happen right away when I turn my MBP on, but usually after some time (depends). First thing that happens: it responds slowly; it will move the pointer less than it would normally and it will judder along. Pressing harder doesn't help and sometimes two-finger scrolling won't work one way, or sometimes using my other finger will work better. After some more time, it will stop responding entirely or get unusably slow. I noticed restarting fixes it (temporarily; once again, it depends). Just before posting this, it happened until it didn't want to work at all, and I let it sit for a few minutes, came back, and it worked fine. Ten or so minutes later, its still working (no restart). It's troubling and I'll probably take it to an Apple Store to have it checked out, but I won't have time to do that for some time, so I'd like to see if this is possibly something well-known or fixable.
I thought it might be dirty, but I cleaned it, well, a few times, and still nothing. My hands are clean, too. I thought it might be something I "spilled" onto my keyboard a few days earlier; it wasn't anything watery, it was a rather thick consistency. I hope that isn't it, as I cleaned it quick and well, and it wasn't on the trackpad, and the keyboard works perfectly. The only thing I was doing when it first happened was video chatting via MSN (MSN gets my Mac hot, and I was worried it was the heat that did something, but IDK for sure). I only started using MSN about a week ago, and it gets my Mac really heated each time I use it. I did some searching on Google about this, but nothing quite like my situation. I haven't looked at everything, but, nothing yet.
