OS X :: Leopard Requires Admin Authentication To Restart A Printer?
Oct 9, 2008
We are running Mac OS 10.4 in a student lab. Leopard asks for an administrator password to unpause a printer, and our students do not have the admin password for obvious reasons, but a certain printer keeps doing this. Is there anything that can be done to stop having to authenticate for this kind of event?

In our higher education Mac computer lab, a printer may become paused (I am not sure why). But this requires an administrator password to unpause the printer, which only the admin in another building has. Is there a way to stop this type of activity? What causes a printer to become paused? Is there a way to not require admin status to continue?

I'm running 10.6.4. I have noticed for quite a while now (pre 10.6.2?) that after restarting my computer or logging out I have to re authenticate in System Preferences, even just to use Energy Saver! Once authenticated, everything stays normal until my next restart. I am admin and have one other test account which is standard.
This is extremely annoying when I want to quickly change something trivial like my network settings or whatever and I have to type in a complicated password.

Currently working on a mobile lab of 25 Macbooks(10.6.8) and a USB printer. (Users connect the cable when they need to print)(no matter what printer I connect)
Every time any user(even admin) prints, it requires a local admin or network admin user/pass to print.

I'm new here but hoping I can find some helpful information for a new problem I have with OS X. Earlier today, I noticed that my Transmission was failing to download some torrents I was snatching. Transmission couldn't create the folders I was telling it to create for new CDs in my MUSIC folder. When I looked into the problem, I noticed that I no longer had the option to create new folders and several other modification options. I created a new folder on the desktop and dragged it into the misbehaving MUSIC folder and my MacBook asked me for my password to "authenticate". What's going on? I have not encountered this issue before and it is only effecting the MUSIC folder; all of the sub-folders are functioning correctly.

My Macbook recognizes the IP address of the network printer on the network I'm on here at the church I work at, but I cannot print to it because it requires an authentication track. When I click file>print in an excel sheet or a word document the print screen comes up. In the drop down menu where it says "copies & pages" there should be an option for an authentication track or number, but there is not. It is simply not there. There actually should be a lot more options but there are not. I simply have a few, scheduler, summary, layout, etc. What can I do to get to the point where I can authenticate to print on that printer?

my problem is that on a restart of one of my 10.6.8 Servers parts of the Serveradmin configs are gone while some of them persists. The lost configs are everytime the same: VPN (complete) and iChat (a secondary but very important Host-Domain). Of course a can restore them from a backup but that shouldn't the standard procedure after a restart....

Is there any such thing as a tool or utility that allow a logged in networked admin user to restart/sleep or shut down a server from another terminal or workstation? It'll be kinda useful at times.. I ain't so much bothered about starting a remote system.

If you have Snow Leopard, click the Apple icon and choose Software Update to install Snow Leopard v10.6.8, the latest version. What is Snow Leopard? Do I have it? I already have 10.6.8, but that's a Lion version, right?

With any Unix machine, one can run at the command line:- apachectl -S This will show all virtual servers configured in Apache, and will break if there are any obvious problems in the httpd .conf files. It's very handy for testing a new configuration before restarting the server. With Mac OS X Server though, this doesn't work properly. Sure, I can run that command and see a virtual server or two, but with the introduction of the server Apache wrappers, the command line tools read a very different configuration than the `serveradmin` tool does.
e.g. Wrappers like:-<IfDefine MACOSXSERVER>
....
</IfDefine>
or <IfDefine WEBSERVICE_ON>
[code]....
ps. Running `sudo serveradmin stop web && sudo serveradmin start web` really compared to `apachectl graceful`; it's painfully slow and doesn't provide a way to test a custom configuration before attempting to restart.

Have just added a wireless Canon printer to my local network. Have a shared print queue on a Mac Mini. Have modified the printer options for this printer/queue using CUPS on the Mini.
Identified as a shared printer. Expanded options using CUPS, these options appear in the Mini "print" panel. Can see printer over network on another Mac.Cannot see printer presets, or expanded options on this machine "print" panel.Copies presets .plist from Mini to local machine, now see presets {this is suboptimal - the OS should see the shared presets).
Cannot see epanded print options on local machine. I would expect the expanded options would be visible to
any network machine connected to this printer/queue. What am I missing?

I am not the admin of the computer, but the admin gave me admin rights for a temporary time being, so when I went to login to my user it asked the question if i wanted to make some change or whatever, well appaerantly I clicked the wrong choice and i had the "Remember this choice" box clicked. So is there anyway to go back to change this?I have tried restarting and completely shutting down the comp, and taking admin rights off and putting them back on.

When I upgraded to Snow Leopard, somehow my permissions have become affected and now when I log in as administrator, I am blocked from accessing folders that the administrator should be able to access. I think that my Administrator account details got deleted or changed to 'unknown' during the upgrade when I had to wipe my whole computer to load the new software. I now get the message: 'The folder “CrashReporter” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents.' I can then go into 'Get Info' to change the permissions by adding my admin account (which is not there for some reason) and specifying 'read and write' and then it works fine. However, I have to do this individually for each and every folder and subfolder to make the files work properly. Is there a way of having the computer change all the access permissions to accept my admin name and password again? (So I don't have to change the permissions one at a time on each folder?)

I started having problems a couple of weeks ago with logging into my main account, I have 10.6.8, when I login to my main account it will either just be blue or maybe show the background image then will return to the login screen, I could access my guest account fine, so I created a new admin account and used console to grab the log when I tried to log into my original account.

I'm trying to update our lab computers to Adobe CS 6 Master Collection, but all of the apps only work in the admin account and none work from the managed accounts. I've posted this on the Adobe forums, but no help so far: [URL]..Recap:
1. Made sure that all applications are checked in the limit applications preferences.
2. Changed permissions on all Adobe related folders to read and write.
The prompt stating that the user does not have permission to open the application comes up. if I select always allow, nothing happens. If I select allow once, other permission prompts come up for the application's components (e.g., adobe_licutil) and the application freezes. If the account preference is changed to allow this user to administer this computer, all applications work fine, so there is some kind of problem with CS 6 and parental controls (nothing works if parental controls is activated for a managed account, regardless of the applications being allowed for the managed user).
