I just got done doing an Erase and Install on my MBP. I noticed that in the root Macintosh HD directory, all the Unix system files and directories are visible, unlike Tiger where they were hidden. Is that standard? I just want to make sure I don't have a screwed up preference file somewhere.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am using MBP Pro with OSx 10.7.3. I use admin account. Recently I enabled root account and then disabled it back again. Since then I am seeing applications only for root and not for admin even with admin login. If I go to /Users/<admin username>/Library/Preferences, I can see that the applications has relevant files over there. When I looked more carefully I observed that, I am able to see the applications installed for the root only and not for the admin user. Is there any way to corrrect this?

I have split my hard drive in two by having a friend help me reboot my macbook pro. I had him make a drive that was 70gb for "System Files" and a 180gb "Files Drive". I have only 27gb left on the systems file drive for applications. Is this going to be enough, I feel that i need to re-format my hard drive and start from scratch again.

It's a second hand, previous generation 13" MBP with 2.54 GHz C2D processor. I checked Networking menu under System Preferences and couldn't find the Airport. Even when I tried to add a new connection, the drop down menu didn't give me the option for Airport. Finally, I checked "about this Mac" page. Airport was listed there but only as software. I am not a technician or an engineer but I can see that there is a hardware problem and she should take the computer to Genius Bar.

I was doing well until I decided I wanted to change the name of the Home Folder. I attempted this by logging in as "Root administrator" and followed an online "how to". After rebooting I now get a gray screen with the apple logo and a spinning cog. Needless to say I have missed a step!! I have tried using the mac mini's OS X DVD to boot from by holding down the C key while rebooting but it just keeps spinning. How I can perform a clean install if the mini is not responding to Shift key or C key on boot up?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI was having a lot of problems with my new (Christmas 11) MPB. It was very sluggish and occasionally would freeze. I took it to my Apple Store and the Genius said I was running all my apps in root and had too many files on the desktop.They should be under a user. Any files on the desktop are refreshed frequently, such as graphics (CAD, pictures, etc.) and that was what was killing performance. She then proceded to move my files/apps to my user profile.
Since I am the only user, I never paid any attention to where the files were.I would like to verify the information above and do the same process on two other computers, but I didn't catch enough of what she did to do it solo.

I set up a triple-boot system on my MBP (Early 2008) with OS X SL, ubuntu 9.10 and Windows 7 Home Premium. I have a 500GB Hard Drive, and allocated 100 GB for Mac OS X, 60 GB for Windows 7, 40 GB for ubuntu, and the remainder I formatted as FAT32 for storage to share between the three operating systems (to hold iTunes and iPhoto libraries, movies, etc).
I use rEFIt as my bootloader, and all three operating systems happily load whenever I choose them to. The problem lies with the FAT32 storage partition. OS X recognizes it quite nicely and I use it regularly. Windows and ubuntu, however, do not mount it. What's more, Windows Disk Manager identifies the space as unallocated space.
I wanted to put the "Epson Printer Utility 4" application in my dock bar. So in Finder, I selected File > Find, and set it to "Name" "begins with" "Epson Printer".
Mavericks found the "Epson Printer Finder" application in [Root] / Applications / Epson Software, but it did not find "Epson Printer Utility 4" in [Root] / Library / Printers / EPSON / InkjetPrinter2 / Utility / UT4. As a test, I also tried File > Find for the "World Clock" widget in [Root] / Library / Widgets - also not found.
Both files are fully visible to me, and I have have Admin privileges. I set my Finder preferences to "Search This Mac" when performing a search. I can't find any other preference to have Mavericks really, truly search ALL of This Mac, including the root directory folders.

I recently discovered that files saved onto desktop would not be visible. Whenever I save a photoshop document, recieve an adium file transfer, or take a screenshot with command shift 3, etc., it does not show on the desktop. However, if I drag and drop files from other folders onto the desktop or drag a picture in firefox onto the desktop, it shows.
I've tried these but the files wouldn't show:
-Sorting files by filename in the view options.
-Opening the desktop folder in finder.
-Renaming the files in terminal.
When I do these, the files would show:
-Restart the computer.
-If I list the desktop directory in terminal with the ls command, the files are visible.
-Move the file in terminal to another directory, the file is visible with finder.
-Dragging the above file onto desktop, the file shows.
I recently installed WinXP with bootcamp, wonder if that caused the problem.
All my track file names and other details are visible in Itunes but none will play. single click on a track and an exclamation mark embeds at the front of the track name bar double click or click play and the error message I get says, "The song could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it? A search doesn't find it.Â
This applys to every track on itunes but music files in the music folder in Finder still play.

I've had my Macbook for just a month now. When I first got it, I wasn't able to move any files to my Western Digital External (that works with my previous blackbook) and my other external. It says The item '(item name)' could not be moved because 'System' (or other folder name) cannot be modified. iWork 09 and Virtual Dj don't work either. I want to reformat the hdd, but I can't do that until I backup everything, which I can't do. I tried the second solution "Type this, followed by Return: sh /etc/rc" and my Mac said could not find this directory.

I've been saving up some money and will be buying an iMac (with money from Mac Pro) and a Gaming PC with my saved money. My Mac Pro currently has three drives in it - a 230GB drive with the OS, Apps, Music, etc; a 500GB drive with Movies, Photos, etc; and another 500GB drive with Windows 7 and games.
I have all my Mac files backed up onto a 1.5TB external drive (of which I have less than 1TB filed). My question is about file transferring. Will I be able to transfer the files from my backup Mac Pro drive to the new iMac? It has a 1TB drive so space isn't a problem. I'm just kinda worried about how the files will be transferred since it was copied from two drives and is going to be copied back onto a single drive.
So I bought a 2tb external drive to save space on my main drive - I copied all my movies and have been dropping a bunch of mini dv tapes onto it - but when I open the drive none of them show upÂ
When I get info in disk utility I get one that shows I have avaialble 1.99TB of 2 TB - and right below it says 890 MB are used - don't get it
