OS X :: Kernel Panic When Disconnecting Monitor (10.6)

Oct 25, 2009

I'm just upgrade to Snow Leopard and it work great except one problem, when I turn of my second external screen (a TV using HDMI) I get a kernel panic and there is no crash log for it in /Library/Logs/PanicReporter I've done the "usual" resets on PRAM, NVRAM and SMC however this didn't do the trick. I didn't have any of this problem in Leopard, so anyone else have the same problem in Snow Leopard or have any ideas of how to solve it, I would love to hear it. I thought I should mention I using HDMI for images and TOSLINK for audio that goes to my receiver and then to the TV So when turning off the receiver or the TV I will get kernel panic.

MacBook Pro :: Kernel Panic When Disconnecting MicroBook II

Jun 4, 2014

kernel panics after using my MicroBook II USB interface with either Logic Pro 9 or Pro Tools 10, or even standalone programs.

My macbook is a mid 2012, 4 gb, 2,5 ghz i5 with OSX 10.9.3

The only way to really avoid this, that I've found, is to close every application and then disconnect it, but this doesn't work every time.

it would be nice to be able to disconnect the USB Interface without getting the "grey screen".

OS X :: Kernel Panic Using Monitor's Usb Hub?

Mar 18, 2009

I recently got a Dell 2209WA with built in USB hub. and great i thought, i can manage the USB ports on my macbook a bit more effectively. But it seems when i pull the USB cable when i want to go portable, it gets a KP, at the moment i suspect it has something to do with the logitech wireless adaptor i have plugged into the monitor. it exhibits these issues when the monitor is turned off as well.

I have another USB hub, but i pretty much use it exclusively for my external hard drives (i don't really like to keep it plugged in all the time, if powered up for some reason the drives spin up in the middle of the night even when the macbook is sleeping) and it does nothing like this when the adaptor is plugged into that.

My computer went down, when I brought it back up Final Cut Pro took 5-10 minutes just to simply open. I wasn't even attempting to open a certain project. Any ideas based on the attached Kernel report? [code]

I've had two of these in less than 24 hours on this new machine. I was able to work in Photoshop and Aperture fine, but the minute I started watching Hulu videos I started getting these. Oddly enough. I zapped PRAM and repaired permissions, and haven't had another one yet... but should I just take it back now while I'm still in my 14 days?

OS X :: 10.5 - Cannot Restart After Kernel Panic

May 3, 2009

Happy for my macbook pro for almost two years. Lately it's been unstable and freezes sometimes. Two days ago it went to kernal panic and shows kernal panic screen and asks for restart everytime it restarts. It won't start on DVD or safe mode (it just hangs there and keeps spinning). For single user mode, it first worked and I was able to remove login items, but it froze again and now generates the following panic log. All the hardware have been the same and I have installed vpn a few months ago and dropbox last week.

OS X :: Macbook Kernel Panic 10.5.8?

Nov 29, 2009

I did a quick search through the forum and didn't see anything specific about this problem. It just started to occur yesterday and nothing has changed on the computer. (Nothing new installed and no external hardware plugged in.)

Basically, it just pops up with the grey screen advising to restart. Sometimes it occurs after waking from sleep, sometimes it occurs after starting up, and sometimes it occurs in the middle of a task. I haven't noticed a specific pattern.

I ran the AHT and everything passed. I also ran Rember and the memory seemed fine in the test. I reset the PRAM and VRAM and the SMC after speaking with Apple. Finally, I reinstalled the OSX clean on the machine and the panics are still occurring.

This is the last panic report from the Macbook 1,1 2.0 with 1.25 GB RAM. I'm hoping it is the RAM and not something with the logic board, but am not sure if that can be ascertained without finding replacement RAM first.

Starting up from any boot disk will give me a kernel panic forcing me to hard restart.

Background:

After many freezes I ran disk utility and I get:

Checking Catalog file.

Invalid index key

The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.

Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit

1 HFS volume checked

Volume needs repair

So I use my wife's Imac startup disk to boot it in order to repair but I get the dreadfull death screen (I know how to press the C)

I'm thinking maybe it's because her disk if for her Intel proc so I go and buy a copy of disk warrior 4, and same problem.

OS X :: Stuck In Kernel Panic - Cannot Fix It

Jan 3, 2010

I tried to play world of warcraft so after going through all possible trouble shooting steps such as disc repair, reset pram and everything else I did an archive and reinstalled my OS. At first this seemed to work but then I could not even open safari with out the computer locking up So I erased everything and did a fresh install, the installation had no problems I did a disk check and everything before installing everything was good. Then I get to the welcome animation screen and on the first word the computer locked up at the graphics and the only way to get it off was to hold the power button and restart. Now I am stuck in a kernel panic and can not do anything. The only thing it will allow me to do is get into single user mode, I can not even boot to the CD or disk utility it just keeps giving me the kernel panic when i try and hold shift, c, or d while booting up.

MacBook Pro :: Kernel Panic Over And Over?

May 22, 2012

My computer had problems with display, track pad, not powering up, and lots of parts were replaced in January (MacBook Pro purchased 12.31.09).  Got it home, after a while constant kernal panics.  tried everything, brought it into Apple store yesterday, ran diagnostics, hard disk repaired, seemed OK.

Shortly after I came home it happened again.  I repaired permissions, did verify disk, no problems with disk.  Updated software, including went to Java and Adobe and updated them. Nothing works.  Now the permissions note lots of problems with Remote Management (one of the updates from yesterday, 5.21) and Java (yesterday too). MacBook Pro OS X 10.6.8, would like to go to Lion but don't want to until my machine is stable?

Desktops :: Mac Pro Getting Kernel Panic At Startup

Aug 10, 2010

My Mac Pro (late 2006) now has kernel panics at startup. Problem first happened while computer was in sleep mode, a second kernel panic happened about 10-15 minutes after reboot the first time. Now it happens at startup every time. Zapped PRAM multiple times to no effect. Tested original 10.4 install disk, as well as 10.5 and 10.6 upgrade disks with all external connections removed and from a cold boot. The 10.4 disk causes the kernel panic every time. The 10.5 and 10.6 disks do too, if the C or D key is depressed. The upgrade disks will hang in a gray screen (10.6) or pale blue screen (10.5) with no keys depressed--computer keeps running but fails to boot. Also tested the RAM (4 X 512 MB) in different combinations of one pair in the top riser board (and switched risers, and removed lower board completely). All resulted in kernel panics. Next option?

OS X :: G5 Quad Frequent Kernel Panic

Nov 26, 2008

I recently upgraded to OS 10.5 on two desktops. The PowerMac Intel works fine. The G5 Quad seems to be having weekly kernel panics and frequent software crashes (an example yesterday: Word and Safari were open. After a few minutes of no keyboard input whilst reading a webpage, Word crashed, followed by Safari). Running Maya seems to cause the kernel panics. It did so, once in a while, on OX 10.4, but with 10.5 it's become a frequent occurrence. Calling Apple (still on Applecare) doesn't help. They run some diagnostics and can't pinpoint anything. Clearly if they don't recognize the problem, they can't fix it. (I also run Maya on the PowerMac Intel with no problems, so Maya isn't the problem.)

Realplayer, streaming, has been playing during some of these occurrences — is this a known culprit? Any suggestions? Was the G5 Quad just a bad model? Can I turn off whatever causes the kernel panic alerts that freeze my computer? Should I be demanding more out of Applecare — is there anything I should expect them to replace? Should I downgrade to OS 10.4? If so, how do I do this? Many questions I know...

OS X :: Leopard Kernel Panic On Installation

Dec 25, 2008

I have a 2 GHz Intel Core Duo MacBook with 1GB of SDRAM. I have OS X Tiger v. 10.4.6, and I just recieved Leopard v. 10.5.4, and I am attempting to install it. If it makes any difference, I have my harddrive partitioned - 40GB for OS X, and 30GB for Ubuntu Linux (8.10 Intrepid Ibex), and rEFIt to switch between the two. I booted into Tiger and popped in the Leopard installation DVD. A window popped open with an icon to install Leopard. I double clicked on this, and it told me to restart. So, I pressed the restart button in the window, and the computer restarted, automatically booting into the OSX DVD.

The Apple logo popped up, with the little spinning wheel. It churned for a few minutes, then it had a kernel panic: So, I did as the notification told me, and restarted. It automatically booted into the DVD again, and the same thing happened. Next time, as a booted up, I held the eject key down, and I was able to get the DVD out. So, I'm back to where I started, but I don't have Leopard installed. There are several minor scratches on the DVD, but nothing I would expect to mess with the DVD. Another thing: I popped in the Leopard DVD, and opened the Disk Utility after this fiasco, and verified the DVD. I got this error output:

Code:
Verifying volume "disk1s3"
Checking HFS Plus volume.
Checking Extents Overflow file.
Checking Catalog file.
Checking multi-linked files.
Checking Catalog hierarchy.
Invalid node structure
The volume Mac OS X Install DVD needs to be repaired.

Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
1 HFS volume checked
Volume needs repair
However, the "Repair Disk" button is greyed out. I don't want to go through the Apple Support Hotline.

OS X :: Hanging On Startup Or Kernel Panic ?

Mar 4, 2009

I have a 2 year old imac that was working fine until last night. I had just installed the "raw photo compatibility" update (although i think this is just coincidence) and shut my computer down.

When i booted it up again 3 hours later, i got to my desktop but instead of seeing my usual 3 partitions (macintosh, home, windows xp) I only saw 2 - windows xp was missing. Not only this but my system was continuously beachballing.

I was unable to force quit so after a few minutes i held in the power button for 4 seconds until it shut down. Upon reboot, i was (and still am) only able to get to the white screen with apple logo that you get on boot up. On this screen you have a little gear spinning round. This spins for some time then just as my computer would usually boot into the O/S, the gear stops and it hangs.

I am running the latest version of Leopard and so far i have:

Tried diagnostics mode - all diagnostics come back ok, even in extended test

Single user mode - tried FSCK to repair, first time it made changes to drive, after that nothing.

Tried safe mode - wont boot

Tried booting from leopard cd - still hangs in same place

Tried booting from tiger on an external hdd - at same place it usually hangs, it kernel panics instead

Swapped ram out - exactly the same problem when using someone elses ram
