OS X :: Is There Anyway To Track A Stolen Mac?
Jun 5, 2009
As you guessed it I was robbed. I lost not just 1 laptop but 3! I was wondering if there is anyway to track them? I know there's a software out there but i didn't have it installed.

Alright, here goes my last two weeks. Two Sundays ago I was playing football with a couple friends. The game ended abruptly when I broke my leg and went to the hospital, but thats not the bad part. I was in the hospital for 6 hours and when I got home I found that someone had broken in and stolen my 32" Vizio flatscreen TV, xbox 360 elite, DVD player, and most importantly my 15" Macbook Pro. I called the police immediately and they came out and did the standard police thing, but as I've been in contact with them lately, they say they have no leads and I'm not going to get my stuff back, bottom line. Now I'm left with no computer to work with and worst of all, I know I'll never get the things back that were important to me on that computer. I had pictures on it from when I was 10 years old and I'll never see them again. I worked really hard to save the money to buy those things and they are all gone in an instant. I just can't believe it. I have no one else to turn to and I just don't know what else I can do. I'm getting married soon and I can't afford to go buy a new laptop, to be honest at this point that's all I care about as far as what was stolen. If anyone knows any way to track a laptop or xbox 360 it would be appreciated. I know its a long shot.

I have installed MacKeeper, and now am in doubt whether I should lock my Macbook Air (but then I can't erase the contents anymore), erase the contents (but then I am afraid MacKeeper, who is supposed to take a picture and send it, will also be disabled), or do nothing and trust MacKeeper

When my son left for college last fall, we got him a 13" MBP running Leopard and an external hard drive, which I Mac-formatted. I don't think he's used it yet. If he used Time Machine to backup his Mac and then that Mac was lost or stolen, would he be able to restore any or all of his documents, or any of his applications, onto a new Mac?

I am looking in to getting some protection to recover and make life hard for a thief, if my MBP should get stolen. I found several products doing a search. They are for example: GadgetTrak Laptop Security, Hidden, LoJack for Laptops, Rest safe.with any of these products, or other ones, that you would say is a good investment and worth it. Or possible other ways of doing so that I did not think of.

I have a MacBook Pro and I'm wondering what I can do to secure the data the best I can in case it's stolen. When I had a Windows Laptop I had a password to log on. I know someone could still get into it without too much trouble with a reinstall of Windows, going through DOS, etc.
My question, what is the best way to do this on a Mac? I set up a logon password so when my screen saver comes up in a minute of no use it requires a password to get back in. Yet all someone has to do is a restart and for some reason it goes straight into OS X without asking for a password. Is there a way to change this?
Is it possible for me to somehow encrypt my data to somehow further protect it? Of course I don't want to do anything that will slow my system down.

My questions are concerning stolen credit cards and what, if anything Apple/iTunes can do to help. My wife's purse was stolen last night so for the last five hours we have been jumping through hoops trying to get that all sorted out. A very long process which I think will be ongoing for some time. We have a clear picture of the thief from a surveillance camera at a local store. Among the other purchases made, was a charge to iTunes.
Is it possible to add a card that is in someone else's name to an existing account? Or, did they have to open a new account in my wife's name? What information does iTunes gather in these cases? Will they be able to provide us any usable info? User name or password? IP address, maybe? Can an IP address lead to a physical address? Would the police even follow up on this stuff? Has anybody been through anything similar, and was Apple/iTunes helpful at all?

My iMac 27 was stolen and then recovered. The thieves added a new admin account "User" that has no password. My accounts are visible, but the passwords I was using when they stole it are no longer valid. I thought I could simply use the new "User" admin account to access Users & Groups and reset my account passwords. But when I go to Users & Groups my old accounts are greyed out, I cannot select them. How can I regain access to my original accounts?
