When my son left for college last fall, we got him a 13" MBP running Leopard and an external hard drive, which I Mac-formatted. I don't think he's used it yet. If he used Time Machine to backup his Mac and then that Mac was lost or stolen, would he be able to restore any or all of his documents, or any of his applications, onto a new Mac?
I installed snow leopard on both my Aluminum 24" 2.4 gHz (late 2007) iMac and my MBA (early 2008). I lost all the the old dates in Time Machine on my MBA but not on my iMac. Basically, I only have backups for the MBA since the upgrade. Why would the old backups disappear?
I have tried to recreate lost ical using time mashine but without succes. I get the folowing message" iCal can neither be change nor be deleted because the item is required by Mac OS X.
I momentarily pointed Time Machine to make back ups at the wrong partition on the external HDD attached to my Time Capsule, now I have pointed back to the correct partition, but it won't recognise the old back-ups. ie it says "Oldest Backup - None, Latest Backup - None". How can I pick up the old back ups?
I have been having a problem editing pictures (screen goes white when I click 'edit') so i went to a discussion about it. I followed directions for fixing the problem including renaming my iphoto folder and now I can't find my old pictures. I changed the name back and still no photos. I tried to go to file vault and restore the pictures but I get a message saying that file vault can't be found. I know a little about fixing problems but some of the information about this issue is over my head. I've had this mac for 2 years and until now have been able to trouble shoot all my problems.
I copied my itunes folder and in the process I have lost a few songs. I want to find them on time machine? as I have re installed the software on my make I can open prev back ups; ut song was not i itunes music. It still shows on itunes list and asks if I want to find it? I cant.
I installed a new HDD. I reinstalled OS X by first installing my original Tiger and then the Leopard upgrade. Don't ask why I did not just go straight to Leopard because I don't know I then used the Migration Assistant to bring in the TM backup. I went to open iPhoto and I am getting: wtf? I think that I am going to reinstall OSX. I have the original HDD; is there a way to transfer everything from that directly? Maybe I will try doing an "Erase and ReInstall" option right from the Leopard disc and then choose the TM option.
I am a new macbook pro user. Today I logged on and found I had lost system preferences and time machine. Also, my itunes logo is gone. Don't know what else is missing yet, but I can't find out how to get these back. Nor do I have any idea how they disappeared.
I was doing my first-ever Time Machine back-up tonight. I have about 130GB of data. About a half hour into it, my battery died and when I rebooted the computer from sleep mode, Time Machine said that the back-up had failed. I deleted the initial back-up in the 'Time Machine Back-Ups' folder, but it still says that I have 40GB less on my external hard drive than I actually do. My external hard drive is 300GB, so I should have 170GB left, but I only have 130GB.
I've just bought a new 500gb HDD, and 4gb of RAM for my late '08 MacBook. However, when I started to look for my Leopard install disc, I couldn't find it. So, I was wondering... The old HDD is running Snow Leopard, and is still in the computer. My friend has a MBP, which came with the Snow Leopard DVD. Would it be possible for me to back up the old HDD with Time Machine, install the new HDD, insert his Snow Leopard DVD, format the drive with Disc Utility, and then restore from Time Machine (with all the drivers/etc) installed?
The only thing I'm worried about is, I replaced the old HDD because it had some error - ivalid node structure - or something. The drive still works, but would the problem affect anything/be carried over? I'm not so concerned with keeping the files, I just want to have all the drivers/etc installed on my mac, and I couldn't think of another way. Woul this be possible, or is there an easier way?
All our itunes songs are no longer on our hard disk thumbnails of photos there - but can't access them on main screen.I backed up a week before info ws lost using time machine backup. How do i retrieve these pics, songs etc?
I have restored my contacts from time machine. The groups are present in time machine, but were not present in the restored address book. Is there anyway to restore the groups?
I cannot enter Time Machine (to restore a file that was lost) by clicking on the Time Machine icon. The machine backs up all right, but I just don't seem to have access.
How do I restore my contacts that were lost during Mavericks upgrade? All of my contacts are gone. My version of Contacts in Time Machine is 7.1, which can't be opened in Mavericks (version 8.0). I know they are in there somewhere. I also don't use ICloud, so I can't find them there.
I lost all data off my disk after OS X asked me if I would like to use my disk for TimeMachine. The disk was previously used on Windows, and contained data I thought I had a backup of.Â
The disk was a NTFS partioned IOMEGA 1tb disk. After it got formatted by TimeMachine it is HFS+. TimeMachine made a first backup to the disk, about 100gb of data. De disk contained movies from a camera which I don't have a backup of. How do I get these movies back?  I've tried multiple software:
- Data Rescue 3 - Quick Scan: only files from the HFS+ partition - Data Rescue 3 - Deep Scan: only files from the HFS+ partition - StellarPhoenixMacDataRecovery: only files from the HFS+ partition - TestDisk: no results
I have a file I alter once about a week, each time I alter it I save it as a new one, with a date included in the name.So I have a series of files something like
xxxxx march 13.numbers xxxxx march 07.numbers xxxxx march 01.numbers etc.
This morning when I updated and saved the march13 file I accidentally saved it as xxxxxx march 13, not xxxxxx march 20 which it should have been. No problem, go into time machine and retrieve the march 13 file I thought. Its not there. Its not there from just before the save to any time it should be there !
Luckily I was able to retrieve it as I also have a once a week online backup so I went into the last one of those and retrieved "xxxxxx march13" which proves it did exist, it has a creation date of march 17 but if I look at TM for march 18 its not there - why isn't it in my time machine backup?
All the other files in that folder are as expected so the only thing that makes any sense to me is that TM hasn't been backing up over the past week or so but TM error logger shows no errors.
I was trying to set up my Time Machine to an external hard drive. I didn't continue because it asked to "initialize" the hard drive which I had a lot of important things on.
I have another external hard drive I'd like to use but, my Time Machine has this error code of -43. What is this and how can I use my Time Machine on another external hard drive?
can't open the program time machine located in the folder /applications/time machine anymore, message says program ain't working for unknown reaason, but I still can open time machine in the menu bar. any clues what the trouble might be? and/or is there any way to reinstall time machine only on os x 10.7.3?Â
btw., on the system backup hd which is a mirror of the imac system, the programm still works
I cannot enter the time machine when I press the time machine icon. I press and nothing happens, so I'm not sure even if it is backing up at this point. When i go to my Tme Capsule it has the folder there for back-ups and the most recent, but no access from the icon.
I just replaced my HD on my 15"MBP. The install went well until restoring my data from Time Machine. The apps came over fine but none of my data did. Yes, I checked all the boxes on the "restore from backup" menu.
Of course now when I start up time machine the backup isn't there. How do I get Time Machine to recognize the backup? I have it on two places - a time capsule and a separate external HD.
Have installed an 120GB SSD in my Macbook Pro 2010 but have had a couple of problems. Sometimes when you try to enter time machine and or Finder the machine freezes. Also the only way out of this is to hold the power button down and reboot. I have been informed by Apple that there are slight differences between the 2009 and 2010 models. Another odd thing is Skype will not load up automatically on startup, despite making sure this option is ticked. Most other things seem to work. Reinstall original hard drive and all OK.I have tried this with OCZ and Crucial SSDs and get same result. I have also installed the SSDs by cloning and by direct original OS X disk.
I have my data saved on an external hard drive (OS 10.7) as I sold my previous Mac and am thinking about buying a power pc iMac using Leopard - does anyone know whether this will be able to open and transfer my data to the older Mac?
I "downgraded" my computer back to leopard (10.5.8) from snow leopard (10.6.1) via the SL install disk and a time machine backup. Now my VMware Fusion virtual machine for Windows XP is missing in action. Where can I find this on my Time Machine backup so that I can see if I can restore it?
Yesterday I used Migration Assistant to recover the contents of a failed MacBook Pro (Snow Leopard) from a Time Machine backup to a new MacBook Air (10.7.4). Using the same external disk for backups, I now have a folder for both the old and new machines inÂ
/Volumes/time_machine/Backups.backupdb/Â Â
The instructions hereÂ

explain how to reconnect time machine to the old machine's backups. Once I've done this and checked that I can access the old backups, can I simply delete the new machine folder to save space?Â
I have been running Time Machine on my iMac since I got it. I installed server and now I notice that the server app has Time Machine as well but its turned off. My oringinal Time Machine in system preferences seems to be running like it always has. What is the difference between the two?Â
I've been backing up my old MacBook Pro for over a year. I sold my computer two months ago and purchased a new Macbook Pro this week. I went to my time capsule and it's only showing a backup from June 2009 when my backups have been for all of 2009. Time Capsule is showing 250GB of space used so my backups have to be there somewhere right?
I have an external 500gb drive plugged into my brand new Time Capsule. The 500gb drive basically stores my entire library of music and my iTunes points to this external drive.
Is it possible to have time machine backup all information on the 500gb drive to the time capsule, so encase the external drive takes a dump, I don't loose my entire music library? Maybe time machine is already doing this, I am not sure.
