OS X :: Is It Safe To Download Files Through A Web Proxy
Aug 13, 2009Is it safe to download files through a web proxy?

View 6 RepliesI just made the transition to FCPX and I've imported video to a number of Libraries. (I really have to fight hard not to call them Projects)
As I didn't completely understanding all of the import settings, I made Optimized video along with the Original media. Ok, no big deal. The files take up a bit of space, and because of the nature of the project (lots of talking head interviews) not sure I really need Optimized video, but wasn't too concerned. I'll know for next time that I don't want to check that box, unless I really need the Optimized video.Â
My question is -
If I wanted to make a copy of my media files to a portable HD, work with these files off site with the same Library that is on my Macbook Pro, make logging notes, selects, maybe even creating a Project or two, and then return to my office where I would re-connect the original media files located on the office-bound hard drives, what do I need to do to ensure that this will work properly?  Â
Secondarily, would it now make sense to create the Proxy files to use for this purpose? Is this not what these files are normally used for? Smaller, and more easily taken on the road and edited, and then the Library will re-connect everything to the original files once re-connected to the drives that contain the original media?Â

So, I don't like torrents, I generally associate viruses, malware, and spyware with torrent programs, is Vuze safe to download? I want to download Jolicloud and it's only available by torrent. Am I at risk in anyway by installing Vuze?

View 5 Replies View RelatedAs ( I am told , you don't need anti virus etc ) on a imac. is it safe to down load some games from site such as bigfishgames ?
They are advertising some new awesome looking games for the ipads in their emails, I do like to relax by playing games such as scrabble or doing crosswords, also I like to download you tube video's that instruct you on craft subjects. I suppose the question is , Is it safe to download anything really?

When I try to download something from download.com or other websites, it just goes to a blank page and the download never happen, I open the download tab and saw it was blank.
this really frustrating, its the same on Safari and mozilla on my Mac.
When I attempt to download a .wmv file, it appears to download (as evidenced in download manager) but then stalls forever and never finishes the job. I can download other media files without problem. I have updated WMP. Im on G4 PB 10.4.3.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have 33 dmg files totaling over 1 GB of space. Is it safe to delete these files or should I keep the newest one of each application in case the application doesn't start at a later date? Sorry for the basic question but since I was in the Mac Basics section.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI've noticed my hard drive space slowly whittling away for no apparent reason. Having done a bit of research on the net, the topic of cache files often come up, allegedly deleting htem clears up a lot of space and allows your mac to run much faster. Is it safe to do this? I have onyx for mac, which options under cleaning do people usually check when using it? I am running snow leopard 10.6.2
View 10 Replies View RelatedIf I try to mount almost any DMG file I just get an error message saying that there is no mountable file system. I know that these are not corrupt dmg files because these are ones that I have mounted before, it affects almost every single one and more importantly if I reboot in Safe Mode every single one mounts perfectly.Â
Clearly then something is running in normal mode that is preventing dmg's from mounting but I don't know how to find out what. I went to System Properties>User & Groups>Login Items and removed everything that was there but that was just iTunes Helper and something called WDC something or other which was unchecked anyway and is just a utility that controls my external hard drives. With everything removed and rebooted still DMG files won't mount.Â
Safe Mode = DMG's mount
Normal Mode = DMG's won't mount.Â
how I can find out what is causing this problem and/or how to fix it as it's annoying as **** and preventing me from easily updating software.

I want to know If I can delete items in my downloads folder. I HAVE DONE NOTHING specific to these files. The majority of them are files I opened as email attachments. NO, I haven't moved them or saved them. NO I haven't imported them to itunes. NO they aren't files ending in .dmg. Almost ALL are pdf. On another post regarding this question the chosen answer was, "you can delete from downloads folder without affecting the applications, so you CAN'T delete them without any problems". This statement is contradicting
Should it not have been worded, "YES you CAN delete without any problems"? And it didn't indicate if it included pdf files. ( i believe they were discussing copies of apps or programs in the downloads folder).Â
I just want to know what will happen to these pdf files. Do I need to move 229 files IF i want to preserve them somewhere on my Mac, or are they already saved elsewhere as a pdf?

Im just curious if its a good idea to download itunes software from a site not affiliated with apple? Should i worry about glitches and problems or is it a pretty common thing? Just let me know what you think.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm getting the gray screen when I startup. I tried using the install disc to repair the utility, but it said it cannot be repaired. I had to use a plug-in mouse instead of my normal wireless mouse to get the startup disc out on a restart. I want to now startup in safe mode, but holding down shift during startup with my wireless keyboard doesn't work. Do I need to have a plug-in type keyboard for this function to work? Can you backup files using safemode?

So a while ago i installed iGetter and jDownloader to handle some of my downloading needs. These have both been uninstalled a while ago and i seem to have the problem that if i navigate to a file in my browser it will not download, it just sits there and does nothing. This is really anoyying as i can't download any files anymore
I presume one of these applications has disabled this behaviour in os x so that it can hijack it and use the app to download files. Does anybody know how to revert this so that browsers can handle downloads properly?
I've been having trouble downloading files from an ftp server (URL) on Finder and while it does fully download eventually, it takes a while and if I click the x to stop it, the download won't stop. Is this a known problem with Finder, is it a glitch, or is it my internet connection.

I've checked the box "Send all traffic over VPN connection" because that's exactly what I want to do.
However, as people have experienced, and as expected, you can no longer browse the web or any other web traffic when you are connected to VPN with this enabled.
There are plenty of help articles telling us to uncheck that box to get web access again. But that's exactly what I do NOT want to do. I purposefully want ALL of my web traffic to go through VPN, so that it is encrypted between me and the OSX Server. (i.e. i might be out somewhere on an untrusted network and want to chat with someone, so why not VPN to my OSX Server where I know it has trusted internet... )
So what do I need in order for the OSX Server to "redirect" all of my VPN'ed web traffic out thru its real internet connection and then back to me over VPN?
A Proxy program running on the OSX Server? if so, which one? Is there a simple, already-built, ready-to-install program that will route ALL internet traffic, not only , but also chat, email, ftp and others? Perhaps one or two terminal commands or maybe even just a setting in the network system preferences?
I've looked at SQUID, aside from the fact that it is incomplete, not built, missing some pieces, and not easy to make or install, as I understand it only works for www port 80 traffic anyway, so that still doesn't help for other types of traffic such as chat, ftp, etc.
I have been unable to restart me computer after a software update (White screen/apple logo/spinning wheel continuously). I have tried to start up in safe mode (holding down shift key) but it hasn't worked.

What would some good alternatives be? I know I can google "proxy" and find something but typically those are just temporary, right?
I want to set up an encrypted proxy and i am not sure how to do it. Also i am not trying to just shield what i search i want to be able to use it systemwide.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI run a bunch of labs at a university and we have been recently forced to move to mac OSX 10.7 as the newer imacs will not boot to older systems. On the surface this all seems fine except for the annoying App Store issues. Apart from the bulk education purchase problem (ie. there is none) - there is a really annoying Bug with some kind of background update check, this window pops up at random: (I finally identified the culprit as the App Store)Â Clicking 'Cancel' only causes the window to pop-up again a minute or several seconds later.Yes the Students and Academics could put in their personal proxy details, however this seems like a major flaw as there is no way to turn it off.Â
