So my friend gave me his ipod after he bought a new nano. Its a ipod video but it has a problem. whenever you turn it on it has a sad face. I even managed to get it into disk mode but itunes isn't recognizing it. anything else i can do?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI bought Myst from the app store on my iPod last night, and when I plugged it into my computer, it attempted to sync Myst to it but it wouldn't make any progress. Was taking an impossible amount of time, so I canceled it. Now iTunes won't recognize it. I can't see it in Disk Utility either (although I'm not sure that is possible)
Anyway, I've tried restarting iTunes and the iPod and neither has resulted in success. Ideas?

I was trying to move some iTunes files when I realized that my 2nd Generation iPod Touch was not being recognized on the Desktop or Finder. The catch is that iTunes did know my iPod was hooked up. I have a 15" mbp with 10.6 Intel core duo, 4gb ram with a boot camp and ubuntu partition through parallels. The other day I was installing xcode from apple's website, which failed 3 times after downloading saying the package couldn't be expanded. I left my computer for a while and came back where i then had to log in again. it rejected my password numerous time (i'm positive it was correct). when i restarted my computer i got a kernal panic screen when the apple logo came up. it told me to restart the computer which i did. didn't work. i restarted with the osx cd to use the disk utility. when it checked the drive it found a bunch of errors, which i then tried to correct. it went for a couple minutes then told me they couldn't be fixed and i should try to back up my data and reinstall osx. i don't know how to back up my hard drive when i can't log into my account. i've tried to boot in target disk mode and copy some files that way, but the only disk the other computer sees is my windows partition- no mac partition.
i've also tried these, none of these have worked: restarting in safe mode resetting the ram and pram booting with different sticks of ram all result in a kernal panic.
my windows partition still works fine though (as much as i hate to say it) the only things I really care about on my computer are my files from school and my itunes library. is there any way i can get these files off my computer?
I press the power button to put the screen of my iPod to sleep and nothing happens, I CAN, however, use the power button to turn off the iPod. It just won't go into sleep mode with the power button. It will still go into sleep mode if I wait long enough.
-The button still works, just not for sleep mode. Actions taken- I've reset all the settings, and erased all content and settings. I'm on a dialup connection so no software updates are possible at this time, but still suggest them and I'll get them later...

I cannot get my camera to be recognized by my computer when I plug it in and the computer is normally booted.
* If plug the camera into my MacBook, Image Capture and iPhoto will not recognize it.
* If I plug the SD card into my computer with a card reader, the card will be read just fine.
* The camera works on two other MacBook Pros
* The camera will be found on my MacBook if I boot into Safe Mode
* The camera is found in System Profiler when the computer is normally booted, however, the information provided is limited.
* The camera is found in System Profiler when the computer is Safe Booted, and the camera shows the full amount of information about the camera
When I open the system log and then plug the camera in, I receive the following:

From what I understand, this means that the computer is unable to see that the camera is a Mass Storage Device, thus it times out and is unable to boot it as such.
So I set up my system with the USB Prober and the associated logging file.
I ran the USB Prober on level 7 while I connected the camera.
I know zilch about reading and comprehending any of the results except this snippet really stuck out to me:

Just looking at this particular result, it looks like the computer is unable to identify what exactly USB device is being plugged in.
The title pretty much says it all: When booted in single user mode, I can't get my machine to recognize the USB drive. Here's what I did:
1. inserted usb stick (memorex 4GB traveldrive, msdos filesystem)
2. booted in single user mode (cmd+s after powering on)
3. mount -uw /
3. looked for usb device in /dev
4. ...it's not there! The USB drive shows up as /dev/disk1s1 after an ordinary boot, but in single user mode it's nowhere to be found. It's not just a name issue either: the list of devices that appear in /dev in single user mode is the same whether or not the USB stick is plugged in.
Even more confusingly, out of the 10(?) times I tried this it worked twice: /dev/disk1s1 actually appeared. mkdir /mydirectory; mount -w -t msdos /dev/disk1s1 /mydirectory worked fine, and I was able to read/write from the stick as usual. I have no idea what I did differently those two times. Does anybody know what's going on? I've got a MacBook2,1 running vanilla Leopard.
Trying to troubleshoot a macbook pro 2.4 ghz with c2d so I start it up in target disk mode connected to my imac. (The current issue I am having are kernel panics on start up asking me to power off and restart). I am trying to see what the console output for the mbp is, but when I choose the mounted disk and go to applications there and run console, I get the console messages of my imac? What am I doing wrong guys?
edit: for the time being I ll just restart it in verbose mode, see what I get from that.
I recently was having some problems with iTunes, (it was resetting and erasing the library every time i started it) so i decided to just save my mp3 files to my external hard drive and delete iTunes. My plan was to simply download iTunes again and put all my files back onto it.
However, when i downloaded iTunes, the disk image that apple gives you to set it up failed to mount. The reason, apparently, was because it was "Not Recognized"
I had no idea that an apple computer would not recognize one of the most common apple applications, but there you have it.
Not quite sure what happened, but somehow part of my OS X partition became corrupted and is no longer recognized as a startup disk. I ran techtool pro and tried to repair the volume from there without luck, then ran a Leopard install DVD and ran disk utility's repair disk twice (first time came back with an error, second it was able to complete and fix all issues). Where I'm currently at. I am able to view all of my files via Macdrive and my Bootcamp XP partition without issue and am currently backing up any files I hadn't previously backed up. My question is, will I have to do a full reinstall of OS X or is it possible to somehow activate the drive as a startup disk or diagnose where the problem lies and address it?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a 2009 13 inch macbook pro with 2.4 ghz processor, 4 gb ram, all stock from apple. Machine has been working great until 2 days ago when my system froze, had to push the power off button, tried to reboot but got the flashing folder and the internal hard drive was no longer recognized. I did all the usual things and read the apple support page to no avail. I booted from the install CD and the drive is not recognized in disk utility. I took the drive out, put it in an external case and booted from there and the drive appears to be working.
I put in another internal drive, a Hitachi 500 GB/7200 RPM that looks mac compatible, disc utility will not even recognize it either with the external hard drive OS running or from the install CD. In system profiler, under hardware, it says this computer doesn't contain any ATA drives. Could this be a problem with the SATA cable internally? The rest of the logic board appears to be working as I am typing this on the affected machine running the OS from my former internal hard drive that is now in a casing.
I recently formatted one of my HardDisk using the Leopard's Disk Utility into FAT32 format.
The HDD works well with the MAC however it will not mount on a windows XP machine.
The hardware detector detects the USB external harddisk but is not able to mount it. When i use the Windows Disk Management Utility, the hard disk appears with a (Not Initialized) and Unallocated warning message.
I just put in a disk and it wont read it I have checked in finder and it isn't there and I've tried the eject button.

After a fatal mac crash (PPC 10.5) i had no option but to reinstall the OS (10.5), i obviously didnt reformat the drive in the hope that i would be able to recover some if not all of my data. Using various tools i was happily able to recover most of my data successfully, including 3 AES encrypted Disk images of around 30GB in size each.
I didn't hold out much hope for actually recovering the data inside the dmgs, although after some fiddling i was able to recover 2 of them fully after receiving the no mountable file system error, i dont know how i done it but nonetheless i dont appear to have lost any data from those two dmgs whatsoever. Now the third dmg (also about 30GB in size) never gave me the no mountable file system error and instead returns the error: unable to mount: not recognized. Im pretty sure that my data is still there somewhere due to the sheer size of the recovered file, tied with the fact of the success of the recovery of the other 2 disk images. I have read every post i could find on this site and have trawled the web tirelessly looking for a solution to this, but have yet to find anything that even comes close - the closest i have found was a post on this forum where it would appear an apple engineer was able to recover most of the data using some sort of magic.
I am not in a position to pay for professional data recovery and besides i would love to see a solution to this problem appear somewhere on the web. I have tried the usual, rebuilding permissions, mounting on another machine (imac G5), resizing with disk util, repairing with disk warrior, converting to ISO - all which return the same error - not recognized! I have tried every terminal command i have found on the web, although decyphering some of the information is a little out of my remit and my knowledge of HEX is limited. I haven't yet tried Toast, basically because i dont have a copy, but it would be my guess that this would return a similar result. Incidentally when i recovered the original data, there were some small (what appeared to be dmgs) files around only maybe a few Kb each with part of the file names of the original files, i'm guessing these maybe the headers or something like that? although i didn't have to do anything with them to get the other 2 disk images working again.

I have purchased a Seagate 500gb 2.5 inch laptop hard drive to replace my feeble 120gb drive. I am trying to set up this drive using carbon copy cloner before changing it over, I'm using an external enclosure for this. The problem I'm having is the hard drive isn't recognized at all.
It's not showing up in finder or disk utility so I don't know how to format the drive.
I'm using Leopard 10.5.6
The instructions that cam with the enclosure mention setting the hard drive to function in master mode, what does this mean? I don't want to go to all the effort of changing the hard drive if there's some sort of problem, and I would rather clone my drive before removing it too.

I have an older iPod that has some playlists on it that are not in my iTune library. I want this same playlist on my iPhone but when I do an 'export' then try to drag and drop into my phone I get a message saying it did not copy because 'it cannot be played on this phone'. I also cannot drag and drop it into iTunes anywhere either. All of these songs are in my library, I just don't want to have to go through and remake this playlist to add to my phone.
